[the rider]

Name: Bannen (Bahn-nen) B'nen
Age:18 19
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual
Craft/Rank: Weyrbrat/Candidate

History: Bannen and his identical twin brother Kanen were born at Benden Weyr, not the products of Flight like many of their fellows, but fostered nonetheless. Between pranks and switching places to trick the fellow folk of the Weyr, they had an uneventful, but amusing, childhood. The age of 12 Turns brought entrance into the ranks of the Candidacy, but so far both boys have been unsuccessful in finding their draconic partners, if in fact they exist at all. Though Kanen seems to be thinking ahead on the front of what to do should they age out, Bannen prefers to trust to luck and the fact that he has to become a dragonrider. Just has to. What he fears most of all is he or his twin Impressing but without the other; it sounds like a surefire way to be separated, something they have avoided most of their lives at Benden Weyr. The growing nearness of the Red Star does not phase even this lazy candidate, for the most glory and reknown go to the dragonriders who fight bravely when Thread falls.

Description: Bannen is somewhat tall at 5'10” and of a fairly average build that tends towards lanky. He has a ready smile that often sends his brown eyes crinkling in mirth, and light brown straight hair to about shoulder length that always looks rather messy. Effortless is what he'd like to call his appearance—the more critical might knowingly call it “lazy” instead—but he can on special occasions be found trim and presentable for all of five minutes.

Personality:
Bannen is not one to be easily ruffled or irritated about things, and he hardly ever takes even insults or jeers personally. Laidback in both dress and manner, it's expending effort he has a real trouble with, for Bannen is quite lazy. Sure, his chores will get done eventually (if he can't talk someone into doing them for him), but clearly socializing and having a good time is the far more important task. He has learned well the acceptable bare minimum of effort in chores and lessons needed to avoid scolding, and one would be hard-pressed to find him applying himself more, except to the task of being mischievous and clever.

Bannen is quite friendly and social, and always has a welcoming word for any new candidates or visitors to Benden Weyr. Given his even temperament, he usually finds it easy to make and keep friends, and he genuinely enjoys the company of large groups of people. Of course, he enjoys the company of women a little more—Bannen is rather a flirt, and puts slightly more effort into pursuing the pretty lady of the week. But relationships with Bannen never last long, though he tries to part on the friendliest of terms where he can. He likes playing the field, and there's little shortage of willing women in the weyr.

But no matter how close he gets to other people, they will never be more important to him than his twin brother, Kanen. Fostered together from birth, the identical twins have rarely spent more than a few hours apart, and where one goes, the other can be found following after.

Bannen has a good sense of humor and is a definite tease, be it with the ladies or needling his foster-siblings or fellow candidates. He's quite optimistic and is almost always sporting a ready grin. But he's also something of a troublemaker, and has the experience of many a dirty chore on account of pranks and jokes that others in authority did not find quite so funny. His primary goal, besides being a showoff, is to entertain and get others to laugh, and he doesn't mind pranks being played on him so long as the joke was funny. For the most part he sticks to smaller-scale pranking and tries very hard to being charming when he's caught and facing yet another hard chore as punishment.

Bannen is fairly charismatic with his confidence and quick wit, always ready with a quip. However, he is still growing into that wit of his, and he hasn't quite mastered the fine art of when to stop talking. There isn't always much of a filter from his brain to his mouth, and more often than not Kanen has to steer conversations away from Bannen's thoughtless conversational missteps. Mostly this takes the form of him failing to properly chat up a girl or saying something that, if he'd bothered to spare a thought, would strike even him as a bit thoughtless. But he doesn't fuss much about this mistakes, which makes it all the more difficult for him to change his behavior.

Bannen is almost surprisingly more calm and cool-headed than excitable, especially in a crisis. Very little phases him. Unless, of course, something were to happen to his twin brother, and then Bannen gets a little ruthless in seeking revenge. Nothing can be allowed to harm his brother. Even when Kanen isn't involved, Bannen is the type to calculate efficiency over morality—do the ends justify the means? He's the type to take the more long term view, and believes a little collateral damage for the sake of the greater good is perfectly justifiable.

Other:
-Impressed Gneisth at the Zeta Clutch Hatching (shortly after Benden Weyrwoman Kestril's murder after the clutch's Touching) at the age of 18 Turns.

[the dragon]

User Image

Name:Gneisth
Colour: Brown
Inspired by:Gneiss
Personality:
The pun! The pun! Well, at least you can say Gneisth is a nice male. Friendly, funny, generally a pleasant conversationalist, he should give his rider little trouble-- unless you don't like being social. Gneisth can have as good a time with just his rider as he can a group of people, but meeting a new dragon means that Gneisth has something new to talk about, a new person to amuse with his wit, and a chance to build connections with his peers. He'll always push his rider to be amiable and, on his own front, will go out of his way to make that easy for his rider by trotting up to new people just to say hello or making his attention on someone-- or some dragon-- generally obvious with a polite nudge or inquiring chirp. He wants to spend time with his rider, but there's no harm in having other people around while he does it. Gneisth won't be clingy and possessive at all, and the time he'll pay the most exclusive attention to his rider is if said rider is hurt. Nothing could part Gneisth from their weyr if his rider is sick or injured, unless staying also meant making himself sick. Expect him to make a run to get food, but he'll be right back as soon as he's had a few wherries to pad his stomach for the next round of waiting.

Despite his desire to keep His and himself in touch with the largest amount of people and dragons possible, Gneisth is generally quiet in his approach and day-to-day interactions, which makes it all the more surprising to find that this Brown has a quick wit and a thriving sense of humor. He loves to play the shoulder to lean on and when he isn't listening intently to what the other person has to say, Gneisth is contributing his own brand of advice: one-liners, teasing and obviously facetious questions, and general amusement-driven reactions. In fact, this dragon's sense of humor can easily get in the way of serious issues as he tries to diffuse any tension with laughter, and that isn't always the best course. He would never hurt someone's feelings on purpose, not even in jest, and abhors anyone-- dragon, human or otherwise-- who would willingly bully or be cruel to someone else.

He's a hard worker, but don't expect work with him to be dull. He applies his sense of humor and general pleasantness to his work as much as he does to everything else. Sometimes this makes him come across as being flippant or careless, but he could never be considered lazy. He loves activity, to be out doing things, so no task will seem too mediocre for him.

Gneisth loves to participate in Flights, if only for the acrobatics portion. He's not so much set on the goal as the chase, and will go out of his way to perform aerial acrobatics for the extent of his time in the Flight. If that wins him the Green, so be it, but he'll love the chase regardless of whether he wins or loses. And he'll tease his rider about whatever follows, too, until the human is at his wit's end.

Why me?
Do you really have to ask? If Bannen-- B'nen, that is-- was hoping for a partner that matched him in practically every way, he's in luck. Gneisth came out of the egg and immediately sensed a match for both his wit and his sense of humor waiting for him. There was never any question that he was going to go straight for B'nen.

Gneisth is committed to His and will support whatever playful plan B'nen comes up with without reservation. If it's all meant in good fun, then why would there be any trouble with it? Socializing and B'nen's free-spirited way with women will be no problem for Gneisth, either. In fact, his dragon will likely encourage him on both counts, so long as it makes His happy. As Gneisth grows, he can help B'nen learn how far is too far when it comes to joking, since he'd never let B'nen actually hurt someone else with his words, even if his rider wasn't aware he was about to do it. Where Kanen would steer the conversation away, Gneisth will point out where B'nen went wrong so he can fix it on his own and, should the person have a dragon, will try to smooth things over with the human's dragon partner while B'nen fixes the human end of things-- which he will do, even if Gneisth has to needle him into it.

Likewise, Gneisth will be able to push B'nen when his rider's natural laziness would otherwise prevent him from completing his work-- and might even force B'nen into taking on extra tasks when he might not have done the same on his own. However, if B'nen wants to get back to his lazing about more quickly, he might have to exert some of his efficiency on Gneisth so that the work gets done on time instead of just "done". Gneisth isn't known for his solemnity when working, and his playing might make a half-candlemark task take a full candlemark and then some. It's likely that both of them will have to try hard to counter their natural tendencies toward work to be a pair useful both for their wing and their Weyr.

Size:Large - "This dragon is notably larger than an average dragon of its colour, but not so large that you could mistake it for another colour by size alone."
Build:Above Average - "This dragon is a bit more muscular than average for its colour but not starkly so."

Inspiration
Gneiss

Gneiss is a common and widely distributed type of rock formed by high-grade regional metamorphic processes from pre-existing formations that were originally either igneous or sedimentary rocks. Gneissic rocks are usually medium- to coarse-foliated and largely recrystallized but do not carry large quantities of micas, chlorite or other platy minerals. Gneisses that are metamorphosed igneous rocks or their equivalent are termed granite gneisses, diorite gneisses, etc. Depending on their composition, they may also be called garnet gneiss, biotite gneiss, albite gneiss, etc.

The etymology of the word "gneiss" is disputed. Some sources say it comes from the Middle High German verb gneist (to spark; so called because the rock glitters). It has occurred in English since at least 1757. Other sources claim the root to be an old Saxon mining term that seems to have meant decayed, rotten, or possibly worthless material.

***Humans
-Kanen K'en - B'nen's identical twin brother, they're been through through it all together. There's no one B'nen trusts more.

***Dragons
-Stromath - K'en's bronze dragon. B'nen's first conception of him was that he was altogether too much like a stern candidatemaster, and the bronze has yet to prove him wrong.

[Touching & Impression]

The Touching
Quote:
The Inner Glow Egg - One of the big eggs in the Clutch (relatively speaking), this egg contains either a Brown or a Bronze. Touching this egg immediately gives you a feeling of goodwill and amusement. If you're upset, you won't be for long with the Inner Glow egg pushing you into a state where you have to laugh or let go. This egg seems interested in getting to know you and hearing whatever you need to tell it. Mixed in with all that good humor, though, is the sense that this dragon is more than ready to come into the world and it intends to make the most of it when it does.

--------------------------------

Bannen found the Inner Glow egg quite companionable and couldn't help but smile as he laid a hand on the surface of the larger egg. This one, he felt, would be quite an interesting dragon to know, and it was even a ready enough 'listener'. He felt something else...ambition maybe?...mixed in with all the rest, which of course only made sense given the likely color of the dragon within. I look forward to meeting you, he thought to the egg, grinning.

Quote:
(Dezima) - There did seem to be a little bit of sulking when she moved on to the inner glow egg. This one definitely made the welcoming egg to its side look small. Having just come from its clutch sibling, this egg pulled a huge smile from the weyrbrat. It succeeded in pulling a laugh from her. "You are quite the amusing thing." She informed the egg, glancing at her friend. So what egg did they go to next?

(Falawny) - Falawny turned his attention to the Inner Glow Egg. This one seemed about as happy as the Love egg. He was happy this seemed to be such a good-mood clutch. Maybe there wouldn’t be any maulings. As his hand rested there it felt as if the dragon inside was listening to him. Well if it found him interesting enough to listen to, he couldn’t complain. He left the egg and moved past the tail of the queen and her large golden egg. In fact he gave them wide berth as he moved around.

(Kanen) - Oh? The Inner Glow egg was certainly an interesting one. He hadn’t felt too much amusement from this clutch thus far (save for that one prankster egg; he still didn’t think that had been the best of jokes). The dragonet inside also seemed to be very friendly and interested in knowing about him as well. He did have to vaguely wonder what it was that he felt like to the eggs that he’d touched all these Turns—and if that was perhaps the reason he’d yet to be sought after by a dragon. He probably wasn’t the most remarkable of Candidate options. I look forward to seeing you at your Hatching. I’m sure that you and Yours will make a nice pair.

(Viddle) - Next she moved to the Inner Glow Egg and the smile brought out by Questionable, only grew as she caressed the large egg. This egg made her feel good, she wished she could always feel this good.

Greetings young one, since you ask I am Viddle, I am standing the sands just this once, if I am not meant to have a life partner then I will returned to my glass blowing. But you, you will find yours, and you will succeed when you hatch. I can tell. May you find Yours swiftly friend.

(Lilah) - The Inner Glow took her aback as well. She got the impression that it wanted her to be happy, to let go of her negative feelings...something she wasn't particularly inclined to do. She was comfortable the way she was, thank you!

(Emkin) - Next was Inner Glow Egg which made another smile cross her lips.

(Rufet) - Rufet reached out towards the Inner Glow egg first, as it was the larger of the pair. He smiled upon touching it, barking out a laugh before using his own hands to stifle himself. Oh shards! Was it okay to laugh like that? Rufet ducked his head, reaching out towards the Bold Crystal.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dragonflight Pern
There was a short pause then, but before anyone had time to get too restless the Inner Glow Egg started to crack and wriggle. After a little while a brown head thrust out of the pointed end of the egg and called out happily to all and sundry. With 'hello' sorted out the head vanished again, and the dragonet got on with the business of breaking its shell properly. While the brown was busy doing that, the Ancient Strength Egg broke open with one mighty heave of its occupant's body. Stepping carefully away from the large shards of its egg the bronze who had just hatched stretched out beautifully patterned wings and surveyed the boys from where he stood.

Only moments later the brown from the Inner Glow Egg finally shook free, and with a happy cry he trotted over to his brother. Bumping his head against his bronze brother's shoulder he gave another bugle and danced a couple of paces towards the male candidates with his head tilted in question. In response the strip-winged bronze gave a restrained hum, and with that he set off sedately after his more energetic sibling.

elfgurl1234
It seemed that the striped bronze had been able to find His as well. Certainly a good thing-- he hardly wished to see any of the dragonets preceding their mother in going Between this Hatching. Kanen's eyes turned back toward the eggs as one of them began to crack and wriggle. Ah, a brown? Very nice. Certainly friendly seeming. Before the brown could even finish hatching another bronze broke free of his shell both quickly and smoothly. Wow, he was quite a handsome one, wasn't he. His was certainly going to be lucky. Soon enough both the brown and the bronze were were coming over towards the rank of male Candidates. Whom would these two chose?

AnimeEyeshime
Bannen was excited to see the Inner Glow's brown head make an appearance, chuckling lightly at the manner of 'hello'. He was glad to see the brown hadn't lost his sense of humor from what he'd felt at the Touching, and whomever he chose was likely going to find an instant pick-me-up to combat the current downhearted mood. The candidate found himself slightly less enthused about the Ancient Strength's appearance, even if he was bronze. A very handsome bronze. A bronze that was likely stern and stodgy and almost certainly not for Bannen.

Still, he did seem to tolerate his more cheerful brother's antics (better than the first bronze had, at any rate), so there was that to be said in favor of him. The brown was enjoying his freedom from the shell, it seemed, dancing off towards the line of male candidates with his bronze brother following behind.

Dragonflight Pern
Right then! Time to go! Grinning as well as a dragon ever could the brown bounded towards the boys, and skidded to a halt before the front rank in a shower of sand. Sweeping them all with friendly eyes once or twice he then glanced over his shoulder, seemingly waiting for his more sedate bronze brother before he chose his rider. As their eyes met, the bronze gave a low hum and bowed his head slightly, coming to a halt for a moment. The brown trilled in question at his pause, but the sound dipped to an unhappy whine as the steady bronze turned to look up at their mother. Something was wrong and they both understood that implicitly. While the brown gave a chrip and a trill perhaps trying to lighten the moment the bronze bowed deeply to the grieving queen and half crazed though she was, Yirath hummed softly and nodded her head in an echo of the wise young one's gesture. Yes. Go. It was their time now.

Nodding once more the bronze walked on towards the boys, reaching out for the mind of his rider before he even arrived.

User Image

As the bronze found his rider with ease the brown chirred briefly to his mother before turning back to the candidates and gave a happier cry. As his eyes alighted on one boy in particular his voice lifted in true joy, and he rushed forward.

Kanen watched as the two interacted, mildly amused to see the playful brown stop to wait for his more serious brother. As if that dynamic wasn't familiar... He couldn't help but feel a pang though when the two paused to look up at their mother. This was both the first and the last that they would ever see of her... Why had Kestril been killed? To what end? Her death benefited no one, and only brought pain for many. His thoughts now focused once more on the tragedy of Kestril and Yirath, Kanen didn't even notice the two dragonets approaching until he heard a voice in his mind.

Come with your Stromath, Kanen. Let us honour my mother, and let us serve the Weyr she leaves behind. They need our wisdom.

Kanen nearly gasped in surprise at feeling the sudden link between them, and his eyes immediately turned down to the young bronze. This beautiful, beautiful bronze... Surely this was a mistake of some sort. He couldn't possibly want him... (And he was hardly wise.) But, yes, his mother. He would do everything he could to keep her memory honored.

It is no mistake, Mine, and I know you will do your best.

Yes, he would not let them down. Turning to look at his brother, Kanen was equally pleased to see that Bannen had Impressed too. They had Impressed together. This was far more than he could have ever hoped for. "Let's go get our partners fed," Kanen (K'en now, he supposed) suggested with a smile. They had to be hungry after being in those eggs for so long.

AnimeEyeshime
The brown's arrival at the ranks of the candidates, complete with skidding stop and halt, was nothing less than Bannen expected of him, though it was curious he'd rushed ahead all the way simply to wait for his brother. The bronze seemed to have more serious tasks in mind, paying his respects to their dying mother. Perhaps that was Bannen's first clue...

Of course, who needed clues when Impression was such an obvious thing? He'd glanced towards his brother once more to see if he could read how Kanen was taking all of this, and the look on his face--he had a moment to spare a thought on the irony of the situation, as well as a brief worry for what would happen if he was left alone on the Sands, and Kanen went on to be a rider without him, mixed with true goodwill towards his twin for whom the support of a dragon (even an old-soul, stodgy, serious one) would be much appreciated--

And then Gneisth had his say in things, with a cry of joy and another forward rush that had Bannen wondering if perhaps there might be something more than sand to worry about this time the way the brown was hurtling forward.

"Instant pick-me-up" was something of an understatement. He could feel Gneisth's cheer and eagerness, his impatience to meet the others properly out-of-shell, his strong desire to say hello to Stromath and Tyeth and Larth and all the others who'd come after...as well as a very strong desire to be fed. "We'll make sure they're grinning later," Bannen--now B'nen--promised, with a wide smile of his own. He'd make sure of it. After all, what had happened was awful, but brooding on it wasn't going to change anything! They had to live life as it came at them, and for B'nen, it seemed he'd be living life as the rider of brown Gneisth. He couldn't be more pleased.

Gneisth trilled an agreement to K'en's suggestion, nudging B'nen towards the waiting meat before stepping over towards Stromath, eyes whirling a pleased green. the brown thought towards his bronze brother, amused. He had slightly forgotten about the food himself, it was true, but it was only because he was so excited to see B'nen and got carried away a bit. He was right though; food first, humor later.

"Of course, bronzerider~" B'nen teased. Of course his twin would Impress one of the few dragons he'd gotten the idea at the Touching was absolutely not going to be interested in him. And, if he thought about it, a dragon looking for Kanen's traits like dutifulness, kindness, a certain penchant for working hard...well, yes, the dragons they'd Impressed showed their differences quite clearly in more than simply color of their hide.
