Magnetic Detective

PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:39 am

Name: Wolfgang Eklund

Nickname: Jay. This has absolutely no relevance, and Wolfgang doesn't particularly like it. It came about when individuals at a track and field competition decided his name sounded too difficult and intense, so they nicknamed him. And then introduced him as "Jay" to everyone he subsequently met. Ideally, this nickname will leave him once he graduates.

Age: 18

Birthday: November 22nd

Sign: Sagittarius.

Gemstone: Turquoise.

Blood Type: B

Fav. Food: Bacon. Shhh, it's a secret. Wolfgang will do just about anything for bacon. Unless it's Canadian Bacon; then, Wolfgang will = n= at you forever.

Hated Food: Carrots. Every kind of carrot, except if you cook them in maple syrup.

School: Azure Valley Academy

Hobbies:
Architectural Design - This is the one hobby which defines Wolfgang as perfectly at home in Azure Valley Academy. He likes everything involved with the architecture and building of structures. He is preoccupied with making reliable buildings using current technology, trying to figure out how to compensate for current flaws in architecture, and thinking of how he could revolutionize structural integrity in order to make "fantasy constructions" into realities. Until he has the resources to make these a reality, Wolfgang builds small scale models of his more promising endeavours, but is much more likely to sketch or draw his designs. He has books full of different angles of his designs. In science and math, he excels, though he's not particularly interested in robotics. This is his most practiced hobby, as it overlaps perfectly with his studies. He's still learning new techniques in architecture, and definitely doesn't have a firm grasp on most styles. His strength lies in post-modern constructions, while he is most fascinated by the medieval craftsman guilds.

Drawing - Because of his practice with architectural designs, Wolfgang eventually started to draw other things to relax. It began by just drawing what he saw around him as a practice in architecture: buildings, rooms, furniture... and eventually, it became less relevant. He started to draw the people inside the rooms, or the plants which decorated these rooms, until his drawing pursuits flourished. He's not very skilled with anatomy yet, and sticks to drawing mostly faces and busts of people he sees. His style is less creative and unique than it is mathematical, and he spends far more time drawing the backgrounds than the people. Still, whenever he's sitting around for too long, he'll start to doodle what he sees on whatever he's got lying around. It relaxes him.

Fashion Design: An offshoot of his drawing abilities, although he approaches drawing humans in a very meticulous and medical point of view, he is extremely good at clothing them. Hidden on tracing paper wedged inside his notebooks you might glimpse new outfit designs, which range from highly practical business wear to higher fashion and visual kei designs. Wolfgang is actually concerned with all elements of beauty and fashion, though he doesn't like to admit it, given he already looks kind of girly. His personality is hardly as frivolous or soft as his appearance. He knows very little about fashion compared to his architectural and drawing pursuits, and since he's not very good at drawing people, this is the only time when his designs can be more stylized: the figures follow fashion-industry conventions, being much taller and very unrealistic. Despite his pursuit of more linear designs, as he is fascinated with post-modern constructions, he has a better grasp of motion than he might have if he focused on more ancient styles of building as it combines technology with human needs to create very livable spaces. This is his least skilled hobby, and the one which he only took up a little while ago. Don't even try to ask him about his favourite designers, cuts, fabrics or runway styles; he'll have no idea. He'd like to learn, though.

Sculpture: Although seemingly unrelated, this skill is the one which reflects his fascination with structure best, as well as enables him to create the models of his designs. He works in clay, wire models and occasionally polystyrene. He's always looking for new materials to use in his pursuits, but since he has so little skill in this area he often has to look to others for their help, or use premade plastic pieces to assemble them, which isn't really sculpting at all. He likes working in clay, but his designs are pretty simple; he's trying to use clay to understand human faces better, as having something tactile on which to practice really helps him.

Virtues:
Focused -- Wolfgang zeroes in on information, new technology, changes in his environment; whatever is interesting to him at the time. Once his interest is piqued, he's very diligent in his task or area of focus. He admires vigilante thinkers for this reason, as the kind of dedication they display for their cause fascinates him. His focus allows him to complete tasks efficiently, succeed in his areas of interest and skill, and even hone his current skills more easily. His focus is strongest on things which interest him, though as this is a positive trait, it still applies in moderation to those which he dislikes. It allows him to stay on schedule, arrive on time and get what he needs to do out of the way efficiently.

I am certainly not late for a very important date. I have had this in mind for ages. -- You just might never meet someone so conscious of arriving on time, or completing tasks in a given amount of time. Wolfgang does not make anyone wait, and if he does, there's either something gravely wrong with him or he dislikes the person intensely. It's not just punctuality, but rather that he is conscientious of others and the time they are giving him, and expects others to do him the same courtesy. He reflects this ideal by following through with assigned tasks as well as constantly ensuring he is as punctual as possible. To others, it makes him reliable, which is a plus. This trait was driven into him by a childhood in which his parents missed: four school plays in which he was a snowflake (each Christmas saw him in a new white leotard set, standing still and very awkwardly in place while the other snowflakes danced merrily), one graduation, and basically every ride home from school over many years of his childhood. He was always the last kid at the daycare, and he has been irreparably marked by how it made him feel to have people not arrive when they were supposed to, or said they would. Being ignored so many times has gifted him with a constant sense of following through with his engagements and promises.

I Mean Well, I Really Do... -- Wolfgang believes that what he is saying is true. He will pick the side of a story which corresponds to what he believes, and that is what he will argue for; he doesn't do it out of malice, but rather from the heart. Sometimes he's too forward with his opinions and moods, but you never need to wonder what Wolfgang really means when he says something. If something he says is inaccurate, he does not view it that way: he doesn't really mince his words, though he does take care to soften the blow sometimes. He just tries to be as open and honest as possible, even though he's not always successful. Sincerity and honesty are constant intents.

Flaws:
Rose-Coloured Glasses -- Once Wolfgang has been persuaded that something is right, or even if he wants to believe something is right, he has been known to put his own slant on events, situations, words, etc... so that the outcome is whatever he desires. In turn, although he's quite bright, it can be very difficult for the truth to get through to him, because he just imagines something else to be true. Despite being aware that there may be other outcomes, he sees everything the way he wants to see it, and it can be pretty difficult to get through to him when he's like that. In other words, to quote Mythbusters: "I reject your reality and substitute my own."

Impressionable -- Although he acts from his heart, it's pretty easy to convince Wolfgang that someone else's own opinion is the right one, if there's a passionate or logical defense involved. Essentially, he's very vulnerable to sob stories, propaganda and bleeding-heart appeals, and it's not difficult to sway him. This makes him vulnerable, as he will put his energy, time and money into just about anything if someone convinces him it's true or right. Susceptible to vigilante fights and rebel causes in particular.

Preoccupied -- That blank and somewhat hostile stare? That's not aggression, it's Wolfgang's thinking face. He's task-oriented, and his focus can be so excessive that he just doesn't pay attention to external stimuli. It can make people feel like he's just not giving them the time of day, and if he's in the middle of a specific task, he's very unlikely to even respond to someone talking to him in any kind of detailed or timely fashion. In order to make both his conscientious side and preoccupied nature mesh, he often has to schedule his days down to a T-- if he didn't schedule something or someone in, he's almost definitely too preoccupied to do so on the fly. He justifies this by viewing any unscheduled interruptions as rude, and therefore he does not need to be kind or understanding towards any such individuals in those situations. What it results in, however, is someone who can come across as too wrapped up in his own plans to take a step out and lend a hand when it's really needed. In short, please give Wolfgang a week's notice before you need to have a mental breakdown; thank you.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

Eyes: Gunmetal Green. Bright, almost feverishly so.

Hair: White, unevenly cut bangs which frame one side of his face and end up shorter, perhaps some kind of ornament in his hair. This inspired his hair.

Face: Relatively heart-shaped face, though his jaw may become more pronounced as he ages. He's trying to become more physically fit, but he looks a little too feminine in his opinion. Feel free to pick a face type which you think corresponds!

Clothes: N/A.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2011 5:39 pm

Negaverse Alias: Lieutenant Alabaster

Challenge: "Fragility suits you!"

Uniform:

Top -- A tailcoat that fastens on the side, with a high, turned up collar; jacket left open: dress shirt with a low neck, neckline reminiscent of a poet shirt.
Bottoms -- Simple black pants with a pattern on the side of the thigh.
Gloves -- Leather gloves, the thumbs missing on both hands.
Belt -- Relatively plain belt with a gilded buckle.
Shoes -- Boots similar to these.
Shoulders -- A large epaulette on one shoulder, bearing a similar gilded design as his belt buckle.
Accessories -- Chain running from his bellybutton to a surface piercing on his hip.
Weapon -- A gear at first stage; this weapon is no larger than his palm, and as such it's really only good for scrapes and general smacking. At second stage, an enlarged gear with teeth filed into points; the teeth are too short to puncture, so it's used in slicing motions. Eventually, his weapon would become a large circular blade with steel teeth around 2/3 of the outside edge; these teeth are filed like the earlier stage, and he uses it in slicing motions instead of to stab. The teeth are still not very long, and thus the wounds are definitely not fatal. Basically, his fighting would become increasingly more elegant as his range of motion increases with the weapon upgrades.

PICK A MAIN COLOUR FOR YOUR UNIFORM THAT IS NEUTRAL, IN A SHADE OF BLUE, GREY OR BROWN: Bistre .

YOUR SECONDARY COLOUR WILL BE USED FOR PIPING AND EMBELLISHMENT, AND CAN BE WHAT YOU LIKE: Bole.

ON THE CIVILIAN SIDE

For his hobbies, as he has a few different talents and interests, I think it could be stated where his skill levels lie. While its fine to have an interest in each one of these hobbies, he should not be extremely talented in each. While "Architectural Design" and "Drawing" and "Fashion Design" are relatively related to each other, and the skill in one may improve as the other improves, is his skill higher in one than the other? He seems to be most focused on architecture - is that where his talent truly lies, and fashion design is something more has "an eye for" than having a high talent in?

I think that the "Sculpture" hobby could use more description. What does he create sculptures with, exactly? Ceramics? Wood carving? Metalwork? Paper mache? Is he talented sculptor, or is this something he just fiddles with from time to time?

Remember to factor in his age, education and what real experience he has with these skills and fields of study when considering his talent levels.

For the "Punctual" virtue, what is his motivation in being very punctual? Is his punctuality very noticeable to others in a way that he would be liked or respected for it? In what situations may this be seen?

What is his motivation behind his "Covetous" flaw? Is Wolfgang more possessive of people or things? I am also slightly confused by its description and how it interacts with his adaptive nature. Is it that if the person he feels possessive of wants to branch away from him, he becomes aggressive? If so, it still appears to contradict with his "Adapts Well" virtue, as the virtue appears to make him seem very comfortable with change. Is he just "clingy" perhaps, and suffocates new friends/things with all of his attention but can adapt to when the relationship has run its course?

For the "Narrow-Minded" flaw, if it is that rare where it only arises in extreme situations, then it is not very much of a flaw. A flaw should be something that can be seen on a frequent basis, and should not be a rare occurrence.

If I am reading it correctly, the "Vigilante Idealism" is that he can easily become misguided in his ideologies and become stubbornly attached to them. In what sort of situations can this be seen? How is this flaw externalized so that others may witness it? In what ways is this separate than his "Narrow-Minded" flaw, or are they very closely attached?

I might suggest combining these two flaws as they both deal with being attached to beliefs that others may oppose, or make more of a clear distinction? For instance, is "Narrow-Minded" focused more on how he gets stuck in an idea and how it impacts his conversations where "Vigilante Idealism" is focused more on how he can become misguided and act upon these actions?

FOR THE POWERED SIDE

For the Captain and General stages, how sharp are the pointed teeth on the weapon? Are they deep enough to puncture someone? If so, how deep can they puncture? How is this weapon used?

Remember, although the weapons should become increasingly more powerful, they should not be very easy to kill someone with!

Good luck on your revisions! Once you are done making your changes, feel free to quote me to call my attention so that I may re-read!

Thank you for your help! I've gone over ... well, every single one of your suggestions, and edited (hopefully) accordingly. I did keep his Vigilante idealism trait separate from his "narrowminded" trait, and renamed the latter, so I hope these changes make it more clear!

Edit: I switched Vigilante into a neutral trait, since I guess that's more influenced by whatever he's into at the moment... Idk, I can always cut this trait down and make it a quirk instead, that he has a thing for vigilante justice. Essentially, I wanted to use this trait to explain why he'd be so into the negaverse. I added another trait which can more blatantly be considered negative, so I hope this will help with his flaws! I know some of his traits contradict one another, so I tried to explain where they overlap when which trait takes control o u o;

ON THE CIVILIAN SIDE

The Adaptable virtue seems to counteract each one of the flaws. He's adaptable but is Covetous and gets very possessive over objects and people and doesn't wish for things to change with his relationship with these people or things. He's adaptable but has Tunnel-Vision and can't open his mind to other ideas. He's adaptable but in social situations he cannot adapt and is very Awkward and may leave the group.

I think there is a lot of explaining how he is still adaptable going in the description of these flaws, when it seems that it'd be easier to just remove Adaptable as a virtue and replace with something else. He seems to be a very Passionate character, which could be a good replacement it perhaps?

If you do decide to scrap the Adaptable virtue, go over the rest of his profile and try to remove all of the excusing of his adaptability, such as in the Covetous flaw.

Generally it is not advised to have a "Neutral" part of the form, and it is requested to keep the regular form. I think the Vigiliante Idealism is worded in a rather confusing way, and I think it could be simplified. Is he Gullible and believes anyone who tells him something with enough passion? Is he Antagonistic or Adversarial where he feels inclined to take the opposite or devil's advocate position to an argument? Or is he Passionate and can be so blinded by his passion that he loses his moral code? Or is he Open Minded where he is open to seeing the often dismissed viewpoint? Or something else?

Which of these best defines what you are trying to communicate, and then figure out if that falls in line with more of a virtue (something other characters may admire or respect him for) or a flaw (something other characters may look down or lose respect for him for). May it even a hobby of liking to argue or debate?

ON THE POWERED SIDE

Looks good to me!

Once again, feel free to quote me when you have made your revisions! I hope I am being helpful to you!

I think my problem with taking adaptable out is that I'd rather just change the covetous trait. Tunnel-vision wasn't supposed to mean that he can't accept new ideas, but rather that when he gets focused he has difficulty seeing other ideas as potentially right. If you think of his general personality as Adaptable, and that in certain situations there are clauses which trigger his flaws... Basically, it's the equivalent of someone who is very even-tempered, but say they tend to bottle emotions up, and so when they finally have enough they lash out wildly, even if the subject of their anger is really insignificant (like napkins being folded the wrong way). That's how this kind of contrast should work. Adaptation doesn't have to be an instant thing, you know? He's adaptable, but it can take time when he's naturally kind of awkward. There's someone I know irl with this combo of traits: he's very personable on the surface, but he actually had to go study books in his spare time on manners and different conversational topics, so that he could interact socially. That's an example of adapting to compensate for his natural flaw, which was being awkward in social contexts. Basically, I'll redo these traits and reconsider his flaws, but I don't believe that adaptable and awkward can't exist together. Adaptable doesn't mean he's instantly good in any situation; who could be? It just means that he's generally good at analyzing a new situation and figuring out how to thrive.

Anyway, I changed his flaws, and explained how he can be both awkward and adaptable in turns. :) Removed vigilante fascination, that can be a quirk he develops later on if it's necessary.

ON THE CIVILIAN SIDE

The Adapts Well virtue is still causing a lot of issues throughout your character's profile. It is currently in contradiction with your character's flaws, and your character's flaws are taking too much time trying to justify this contradiction.

Please note that a character's virtues and flaws should remain to be constant, should not only be seen in certain situations.

As written, his Adapts Well virtue is too internalized to be a virtue. As a virtue, it would need to be something that other characters can see in a positive way that they could admire or respect him for. It also should not be contradicting the flaws in the ways that it is.

Considering his flaws, and considering that his flaws should be constant and not rare or situational occurrences, his adaptability contradicts the following:

He is adaptable, but he is Self-Destructive. Although he is described to be adaptable, when he is in new situations he becomes stressed and turns to violent unleashes of rage, taking behavioral medications, or heavy drinking. This type of behavior is the exact opposite of what it would mean to be adaptable.

He is adaptable, but he is Awkward. While it is certainly fine to have a socially awkward character, the description of this flaw is taking way too much time trying to justify its contradiction with his adaptability virtue. It says that "He isn't instantly good at adapting to every situation, and new social environments are his Achilles heel." By this description, I would argue that he isn't adaptable at all. By nature, humans are pretty adaptable creatures, and if 'adaptable' is going to be one of his virtues, it should be in a way that is distinct from the run-of-the-mill human adaptability and should not carry a bunch of circumstantial exceptions.

Remember, virtues and flaws are not circumstantial and should remain constant. Their relationships with each other should not be very complicated or carry footnotes to excuse the existence of the other. Your concept would be very strong if you remove the adaptable virtue, as it is currently causing too many issues with the profile. You appear to have a clear idea of the character, but this idea of the character is not very adaptable. I think that you are trying to say that the character is very Logical or Analytical and processes information in that way, but that is not the same as being adaptable.

I hope this helps in your revisions!

Spy is simply providing you with a list of changes that need to be made for this profile to be stamped. If it makes any difference to know, I worked with Spy on his suggestions, as well, so that would be two staff stampers agreeing that with the way Wolfgang is written, your "Adaptive" virtue is offsetting and causing issues with his other traits.

You requested critique in the stamping request thread, so you're not required to make these changes, or accept the critique, but know these issues may come up again, when you apply to be stamped.

I'm really sorry if I'm coming across as rude, but the article was valid; human beings have contradictory traits, and I did already change his flaws several times, as well as qualify each situation that would trigger each specific flaw or virtue. Human beings have traits, yes, but not all of them are ever-active.

I was under the impression that critiques were for the betterment of the character, but not at the sake of sacrificing a trait which is his integral trait. I already said I'd be happy to try to fix it, but this one trait I'm not giving up. I'd like to work WITH that trait, and adjust his flaws; I demonstrated several times over that I was willing to cooperate, but I'd like some middle-ground, here. I changed every single other thing that Spy asked me to change, many times over.

Again, I am very sorry if I upset or offended either of you, but the article was important.

edit: I'm going to return him to his original traits, and work back from there. These new traits are so catastrophically far from what I wanted him to be like, that I'd just hate him if he got stamped anyway.

I got a few people to try to explain to me what exact phrases were bothersome about Wolfgang, summarized his personality to a friend, and then extracted other traits which I feel equally would define him while removing the ones that seemed most contradictory.

Again, I didn't mean to upset or be rude to either of you, and I'm sorry if that was the case. I was so stubborn because a couple of times things like "Personalities can't contrast" and "traits are present all of the time" came up; while these are based on truth, they're not unequivocally right, and I'm sorry that these gave rise to the misunderstanding. I do appreciate the time and effort you both took and do take to fix things like this.

No offense taken! I try and critique neutrally, so please don't think any of our comments were personal, or negative about Wolfgang. Both Spy and I realize that human nature is incredibly complex, and full of contradictions, but, please understand that the nature of the stamping process, and maintaining a standard amongst so many different profiles and characters, means that we have to adhere to certain guidelines.

Additionally, we are both also players in the shop, so we do understand feeling protective or stubborn over a character, particularly traits that you are partial to.

His updated traits read a lot more smoothly for me, and I doubt there'll be much work to be done, if any, when you apply for stamping.
