Ever since Riley got those crystalline wings, Jericho always wondered if they could be used for actual flight. It didn't seem too probable seeing how they were made of crystals and they weren't anything like feathered or scaled wings. However, he didn't think it was impossible. They were psionic crystals after all. And Jericho had seen psionic crystals float.

Making his way over towards the mindflayer's room, he knocked once before letting himself inside.

"VOOIIII! RILEY! Drop whatever you're doing - We're going flying today!"

Well. At least they'd try. He doubted anyone could figure out flight the first time they attempted.

When Jericho said they were going to go flying, Riley's only thought was that their usual dragon and rider scenario. This sudden intrusion was met with ecstatic glee - Riley loved to go flying with Jericho. Their bond made it a very special experience. So when she left her study to meet him in her dark living room, she was bouncing on her toes.

All of her work had been dropped, on her desk. Papers had flown everywhere.

Okay. Let's go. She grabbed his arm before he could knock something over in the dark, and led him back out to her door. Tugged, even.

Grinning towards Riley, he chuckled as she practically tugged him on out the door. Though, he realized that she probably was thinking about their usual flight experience, considering her former reactions towards potentially flying on her own.

For now, Jericho decided to not elaborate. He'd wait until they were at least outside for that. Though, he could start a bit of questioning.

"So how are the wings? They don't still hurt you do they?" he asked. If they still caused pain, this would probably be a poor(er) idea.

Riley really, really did not want to talk about her wings.

The subject dampened her good mood, and she turned to make a disgruntled face at him for it. No, they don't hurt anymore. The muscles have healed around the core structure. Now they are just permanent, annoying appendages. Thank you so much for reminding me.

She reached back and poked him in this stomach, then walked out the door of the dorms, still tugging him like an anxious puppy on a leash.

Jericho noticed that drop in her mood. The wings were still a bit of a poor topic for her it seemed. That would make what he had in mind today a bit more difficult if that was the case.

Challenge accepted.

"They're only annoying if you let them be," he chimed, still sounding pretty cheery and optimistic.

Once outside and in a nice clearing, he turned towards her and grabbed her by the arms. The look in his eyes seemed a little devious.

"Because you. Are going to learn how to fly. How bad could that be?"

Riley supposed Jericho had a point, after all. She was letting the added nuisance of her wings sour her mood. Perhaps it was time to simply forget about them and move on-

What.

The tone was flat, as she caught the deviousness in his eyes, but her mood quickly shifted. It was as if the mere idea of what Jericho was actually saying.. was blocked from her mind. And instead, her eyes crinkled in amusement.

I already know how to fly, silly. I just climb on your back and hold on.

Pure subconscious avoidance.

The dragon raised an eyebrow at his friend, staring at her a little critically. She seemed to sincerely miss his point there. But he knew she should be smarter than that. Even so, his grin did not fade.

"No. I mean on your own. With your wings," he said before pausing to let it sink in, "I did some thinking and well.. you can make psionic crystals float right? Well right now you have a s**t ton of psionic crystals attached to your back. If you can get them to rise...and learn how to control this... well, then you'll be flying!"

Riley's affectionate gazed died like the last ember of a fire. She pulled away, backing up a step. In fact, she looked like she would bolt any minute.

I do not fly, Jericho. Her voice was quiet, but demanding. My wings are a mistake. A thing of abhorrence. They don't, don't.. you know.

She pointed up at the sky.

Something so grotesque could never lift me to the heavens as you do.

Seeing Riley's posture, Jericho stood ready, in case he had to chase her down. She was quick, but he had flight on his side. Which... would be fine until she managed to get inside somewhere. Good thing he picked a spot a fair distance away from any building entrances.

"Why shoot the idea down before you really give them a chance? Maybe you didn't intend to put them there, but it's up to you Riley, to take something like that and make them work for you!" he explained before glancing up to the sky, "Malodore just recently installed wings. They aren't ready yet but one day, it too will claim the skies. With wings of metal."

"I bet you can do it. You just need to give it a chance. It is by your will that will pierce the heavens."

Riley stared at him flatly. What was he even talking about..

Jericho, I only say this because we are bonded for life, and I know that no matter what, I can always trust you to be there for me. This is why I can say this without worry that you will leave me.

She reached up and smacked him right on the forehead.

You're retarded.

Her eyes crinkled affectionately, a sign that he might have been wearing her down. So, did you have a plan? Or were you just going to pick me up and drop me?

"But just think about it Riley... No one expects a flying mindflayer!"

Staring at Riley expectantly, Jericho's grin faded for the moment as she smacked him on the forehead. Though, it soon grew back as he gave out a chuckle.

"I do have a bit of a plan. And no it doesn't involve dropping you," he grinned, "But first I need to know a little more about your wings. Their range of motion and whatnot."

Nodding at this he moved to step behind her to try and get a better look.

"That.. and I'll need to know if you won't give up on this. Even for those who are born with wings, a big part of being able to fly is well... having the determination and confidence to get it done. It was one of the things that was holding Israfel back when I first started to teach him."

Riley turned her head to the side, glancing at Jericho in disbelief.

You want me to promise you that I will not give up on something that I didn't want to do in the first place?! She cried out in a slight whine. Jericho..

She flexed the wings behind her while he studied them, simply to help him get a sense of what they worked. It wasn't necessarily a pretty sight, her back. The scars were still visible, as they would always be - and there were crystals underneath the skin, forming what would normally be a bone structure; but they were sharp enough to stick the toughened skin out at odd angles.

Jericho frowned at the sight of the scars. It bothered him greatly to think about how incredibly painful it must have been for these crystals to go into her body and fuse like this. Perhaps that was one reason why he felt so determined to try and make the wings do something good for her.

"You don't want to be able to fly on your own? To be able to soar the skies by my side and possibly by Malodore's as well?" he asked while glancing up at her.

As he examined the wings as she moved, he tried to formulate ideas of how she might be able to get them to be used for the sake of flight. He didn't know too much about how an insects wings worked, which might have helped out a little more here.

"Can you control the wings with your mind? I mean.. like the crystals? Like when you were practicing before all this happened."
PostPosted: Sat Sep 24, 2011 12:54 am

I already soar the skies. She turned around and places one arm on his shoulder. You gave me that gift. I don't need anything else.

He was playing dirty pool with Malodore, however. Her face contorted in mixed emotions, before she gave him a hesitant look.

I can control them. If I really wanted to, I'm sure I could make them float and they would leave me hanging underneath them awkwardly like some kind of catch in the clutched of a predator. The idea has never delighted me. But if you are suggesting something else..

Jericho's gaze softened at her first set of words, but he soon focused on the information she provided, trying to piece together possibilities.

"Given how your wings aren't one solid piece, you'll probably have to make them float to help give you lift. Perhaps that combined with.. more traditional flight techniques, you'll be able to fly more normally," He mused, "Which means you'll probably have to do some conditioning. Your body is pretty well toned as is, but it can't hurt to train the needed muscles for flight some more. You should already know what those are from working with Mal."
