For as much a thinker, activation, the quiet solder Quidel was, he had yet to come to any conclusion on how they could possibly survive this drought. And then there were those who they were told lay to the north, possibly waiting to wipe the prideful Firekin out when they were at their weakest. It was such a burden to his mind that he often wished he had some distraction.
Where were his siblings and childhood friends that had been so numerous growing up? He was alone, Quidel felt this truly, deeply, and often wished he weren't so withdrawn. Wished that he could make friends as easily as, oh say, the slacker Huozin. But alas, Quidel was, perhaps thankfully, not that laz nor that extroverted.
So he lumbered his way to the top of a dune and sat there, tail curling around his paws as he looked down at some of the pride tending to and chattering with one another. It brought a sad smile to his face. These were tough times, and here he was being sad for himself. Silly. So silly.

She kept to the fringes.
With everything, she moved as asked, tracked as asked, and otherwise drank as little as possible and tried to help tend to cubs, but the drought and departure of her half sister, and seeing her stronger half siblings of her mother grow... She began to feel a mite lonely, walking through the arid sand. She wasn't seeking water-- though to do so would be wise- but rather a feeling of hope, the female's powerful frame absorbing heat through dark fur.
She would survive, but she would do so alone. She promised...

It was not the natural state of a lion to be alone. They were social beings, after all. Quidel felt this and yet still, he could not help himself. However in his lonliness, he did not appear to be alone. He noticed the lioness - heard her rather, and soon his gaze followed the swivveling of his ears.
"Uh, evening," He greeted.

Mpeko wasn't expecting to meet another and bowed, polite.
She'd been crying.
"Evening."

At first, Quidel turned back around, but something in the back of his mind struck him as off, and he slowly turned back around.
"Is something wrong?"
What wasn't wrong might have been the better question. There were so very many things wrong. It was a sad state that the firekin were in at the moment.

Mpeko was surprised to hear the words, and blinked before looking down.
"Just... Lonesome I suppose. I don't... Make friends well. I... I turn down duels and... I don't have the aggressive spirit others do.... I... I guess I hunger for stupid things, like making others smile or comforting others. I love hugging others... I... I'm sorry, I shouldn't gush." She looked awkward.
"My name's Mpeko."

Quidel nodded, "Not typical, But I understand lonliness. Coming from a large litter, I wonder where my siblings have gotten off to. Lonliness is not something I would have thought i'd ever have to face growing up in their company..."
He wasn't much for fighting himself. All he had was brains.
"I am Quidel."

Mpeko smiled, sniffling slightly in relief and bowed her head.
"It's my honour to meet you." She looked up.
"So you have a large family too? I only was close to one half-sister before she left to stretch the water supply." She looked slightly shy. "What's your family like?"

Quidel nodded, "As we got older everyone went their own way within the pride. I find it strange that, though they are still here, I see them so little," he sighed. "The ties that are supposed to bind a family aren't what they thought they were, I suppose."
If a lion could shrug, he did. If anything the experience of his family being so distant had loosened his own family morals. Moral he had once thought the Firekin held dear. Well...time changes things.
"My mother is Kenna, my father Jiryan." That should have been telling. He was born to the once rebel 'leader'. A cub when they merged again. His memories of a time before the merge were but a dream, but he knew the stigma that came with his heritage.

"Oh!" She smiled. Mpeko didn't mind either side, nodding.
"I've heard she's a very strong lioness. You must be proud." He seemed so kind. She shrugged.
"My mother is Jyotika, father Kosuke." She frowned at her father's name.
"I don't think family is much more than what you make of it. I don't speak to my father or siblings much, I never did. I'm too weak for their taste, I suppose. for how I live." She seemed to shrug it off.
"But new families are always made, too." She nodded. "From those alone, coming together to live."

"I think family should mean you're not alone. Maybe not..physically alone. Everyone needs time to temselves but,..emotionally." Quidel couldn't help but feel abandoned. His family was so far emotionally that he hardly remembered what it felt like to have someone there to count on and share your secrets anymore.
He sighed.

Mpeko looked to the male, noting his sigh and reached tentatively. Maybe... Maybe she wasn't useless.
She touched his paw.
"I can keep you company if you like." She smiled warmly.

One could tell by the look on his face that the wheels in his mind were turning. He was silent for a while then;
"Alright."
And he chanced a smile.

Mpeko smiled back shyly, moving next to him a bit and leaning with a soft smile.
"Thank you for not finding me too weak to befriend." She snuggled a bit, purring softly. This was... Nice!

"There's a place for...most types. Even this pride needs those with a less brutal paw and hard heart." he replied, slowly easing in to her company. All in all, it was a thank you, in Quidel's own round-about way.
He decided...he'd stop thinking about things for now, and just enjoy himself.
