Whiskey On A Sunday

PostPosted: Thu Sep 15, 2011 2:48 pm

The neighbors, with whom I share a garage with is playing the drums, very badly, and has sent Dexter into a full blown panic attack... So now, I'm sitting on the back porch trying to coax Dex to go play in the yard until I have to get ready for work. Otherwise, they are awesome people to share a house with, Dexter loves their dog, a GSD mix named Betty.

The people on the left of us, have 3 outdoor dogs, a big mutt and 2 little yappers, that love to entice Dexter into fence fighting, then I'm the one getting screamed at because their dogs are barking.

Directly behind us, 2 little yappers as well, one recently got under the fence and tried to bite me, I kindly told the man that owns the dog that if the dog tries to bite me again in my own yard, it will become a furry little football.

And to the right of us, there are 2 little french bullies that are mostly well behaved, but if they are let out with out their e-collars are little monsters that also try to fence fight with Dexter...

I have recently started taking Dexter out in my own back yard on a leash, it is ridiculous that my own dog can not play in his own fenced backyard.

Would it be possible to put some tarps 'over' the fence, to cut down on visibility between Dex and the neighbours, to hopefully cut down on issues?

I'd talk to the drummer-neighbour and see if you can reach some kind of compromise, that they'll practice at whatever time each day, when you're able to take Dex for a walk/away from the property, to cut down on stress.

Yeah, could you put something over the fence? Also, with the drummers, even if you ask them to try and let you know before they practise, so you can take the dog for a walk, or prepare it for the nise etc.

The drums aren't really going to be an issue, this is the second time I've heard him playing in 4 months. I did ask them to text or call to let me know so I can either help Dexter work through the noise, or just remove him and go to the park or something.

Unfortunately, I can't do a damn thing about the fence. I'm just going to have to try to desensitize him to the other dogs.

The best way to do that is to train him out there. On leash, of course, so you have his attention more. Do what ever you want. "Re-learn" basic commands, teach him something fun, whatever. Maybe teach him to "leave it" with the fence...?

I agree with above. Also maybe sit out there any read or something, while letting your dog work on a super tasty kong. Do you feed your dog outside? If not, maybe start feeding a few meals out there when another dog is visible ( as long as you can position him far enough away from the dogs with his meal that he isnt trying to resource gaurd his meal)
