The hypogryph trotted along the twisted and curved paths as the night sky hung over her head like a thick blanket, snuffing out any light or sense of protection. Twigs jabbed at her sides and nicked her wings, but she kept going. She didn't have that much further to go, and if she found the cave, she knew she'd be safe for the night. She rolled her eyes, secretly cursing herself for even thinking that going off on her own was a good idea. She now understood why her family were always in flocks. Oh well now...

She continued up the hills of the mountains, feeling the pine needles still as they berated her body with every turn in the road. Just a little further and then she could finally rest.

A scent began to permeate through the otherwise pleasant, clean scent of the pine needles. A thick, sickeningly sweet scent of decay, smeared with the earthy overtones of stagnant mud. In the distance a twig snapped, and the trees rustled with the movement of a large creature.

"You aren't one of Barlog's little feathered freaks?" The creature hadn't shown himself yet, but the voice was low and gravely. "What's wrong with your feet? It looks like someone glued a giant chicken to the body of a horse…"

He stepped out in front go her, a large grey stallion with a knotted, stinking wolf pelt draped over his matted fur.

Kateri stopped dead in her tracks at the voice. It sounded like a devil, just taunting someone before the kill. It unnerved her. Her feathers ruffled, making her appear larger than she was and she sneered, clicking hear beak like she was sharpening the tip. Her claws scratched at the rock underneath her at the mention of a chicken... How dare this person!

She huffed in irritation, her eyes analyzing the one who came out before her. She raised an eyebrow, scoffing at the pelt over his back. "And you look like a poor confused soul that didn't exactly catch the memo it was a horse...And no, I'm not in the company of one called Barlog, not that it's really any of your concern." Truth be told, she knew what he was, and she had to be on high guard about it. At least he didn't have paws like some of the others did. He was a skinwalker, not a pure, thank goodness. Kateri had never met one before, and it was a shame that even now she didn't seem like she could actually meet one properly. Oh well. She kept to her ground, her gaze never leaving his body for a second.

"But, Chicken-thing, I am no mere horse," he growled, stalking closer. A few flies buzzed around his fur that his ears flicked away; dried blood could be seen around his hooves and mouth. His golden eyes burned into hers as she spoke, a bit impressed she didn't run away in fear. She was either foolishly brave, or pitifully ignorant. He licked his black lips, "Do you taste like a chicken I wonder? They are quite tasty once you get past all the feathers, yes?"

Kateri stared flatly at the other. How dare he call her a chicken-thing! How disgraceful! How absurd! She snarled, ducking her head a bit as her eyes glared daggers into his very dry, withered up heart. "I assure you, I'm no chicken. I wouldn't dare go down so easily as that poultry..." She flexed her talons, making sure if she had to use them, that they'd be open and available. She wasn't afraid of fighting dirty, and this seemed like she wouldn't be able to leave without a fight.

(OOC: I have her cert now, would you rather have that instead of the graphic up there?)

((sure))

"Well, I'd hope not," he replied, a smirk forming over his mouth. "What fun would that be? Meals are always more satisfying if you have to work for them!" He chucked, noting the claws and the curve of her beak - he wasn't foolish, despite the smugness confidence in his voice he knew if he got careless he could be seriously injured.

But it was worth it. Easy prey was ... easy and boring. When the fought it made the victory so much sweeter. The desperate fight for survival - seeing the look in their eyes when they knew they were going to die - nothing was sweeter.

Kateri sighed, eying him from her safe distance. She could take him...and perhaps she couldn't take him. At this point, she knew he was in control of the situation. Trying to flee would only make things worse and at this point, Kateri knew she did not want her back to that thing. She looked at him blankly, with a rather dull and lifeless stare. She wasn't afraid of him. If she died, she died. If she lived, she lived. That was the gamble of life.

She just didn't know when or if she should move at this point.

He stared her down for a good, long, time. He was hoping she would turn to free - it would put him at the advantage. With her back turned he could avoid the pierce of her beak and the slash of her claws. He growled - letting the stench of his rotted breath curls over her as his eyes bore into hers.

But she didn't flee, she faced him back just as intensely as he stared at her. Finally he opened his mouth and roared at her as he lunged forward, whipping his head towards the soft underside of her throat.
