I first got them when I was 12, and had them for a total of about 2.5 years or so.
You're right about the first few days hurting the most. Your teeth are gonna be really sore and achy, but you might still be able to eat soft foods like bread or something. After that, you'll get used to it, and it will probably really only be sore again whenever they tighten the bands. That happens every 4-6 weeks, if I recall, and by the point, you're a lot more accustomed to it.
And they're gonna give you a list of these things you can't have/eat. But I probably ate a lot of that stuff, and my teeth were fine. Depends on how self-disciplined you are, I guess.
Although it seemed like it at the time, looking back now, braces weren't the worst thing in the world.
The only thing that really sucked was this stupid expander thing they gave me to even out the spacing of my teeth. It wound up completely stretching my two front teeth apart, so I had this huge gap and I spoke with a lisp for about 6 months.
Hopefully you'll only need the basics.

how long does it take to tighten them bands eek
wait, if they're straightening your teeth, doesnt that mean your gums will be killed, well not literally killed, but you know what i mean surprised

As for the tightening, it really only takes a half hour at the most, I'd say. All they really do is take off the old elastic bands and just put on news ones. Gradually, they start using stronger and slightly thicker bands, which helps pull your teeth together.
I wanna see pics when you get your braces!
