"Head down, Takataka--be quick," Kokoto snapped quietly. Her brother still needed instructions due to his inexperience, but her sister was handling things well enough. She worried the two of them would get into trouble, but as long as she stuck by them, she was going to make sure that didn't happen.

The air resounded with a symphony of the snapping of jaws, roars of pain, yelps and cries, and blood splattering grass. The chaos was intensifying by the moment, and the three siblings were well aware that they had to jump into the fray sooner rather than later. Koko and her younger sister were eager, but Taka...not so much.

Blood-red eyes hungry for the fight, the eldest sister led her siblings out of the brush and into the open, scanning quickly for a target. She locked on one and braced herself.

"That one," Tufani breathed as if she had read her sister's mind, teeth trembling behind her lips in anticipation. She had been raised solely around hyenas her whole life and had never been around lions so close. But the disgust she felt towards them was pure, especially after having joined the Mava'bunda. She was eager to prove herself capable to her siblings, her pack, and herself. The fight couldn't come soon enough. She was ready.

Takataka's heart raced in his ears, adrenaline surging through his system. He felt ill and unsure, and no matter how hard he tried to coax himself out of his inner-turmoil, he remained there. "Koko, I--" he said through a tremor, but was stopped short by his eldest sister.

"You listen to me," she said, glaring into him, serious and savage. "I won't let anything happen to you. We get in, we fight, we win." Her explanation was simple and blunt, and it was clear her mind was set on victory. "Follow me." She turned and raced towards their target lioness, leaving her younger siblings in her wake. They scrambled behind her, ready to follow her to what could possibly be their own end.

He didn't understand how it happened. There was warning from Tungiza, but there wasn't much time to ready the Pride for it. Many of his subjects were not fighters, and so he knew that there was going to be more injuries and death than this pride had seen in a long, long time. It worried the King, known to be almost soft in his ways. It sickened him.

He was not one to idly stand by. He was not going to hide within the safety of Pride Rock while others died. He would fight as well, even if he was unsure as to how this war would end.

So much to smell. Blood, sweat, screams of pain, roars of anger. It was sickening, and he could only hope that the youngest of the pride were safe and unable to hear this.

He did his best to encourage those lions around him, to send those that were too injured back to Pride Rock to heal, before they were killed or bled to death.

This was not how the Circle of Life was meant to go.

His eyes rested on a group of hyenas, clearly looking for their next target. Simi offered them a snarl of warning to leave.

The snarl met the trio with a seizing surprise, and every bit of Kokoto's guard rose. It was a male lion. She sneered and offered her own snarl, letting the lion know they were not going to back down. They were there for one purpose--to be soldiers and fight for their pack.

There was no backing down.

Tufani darted around the male in a wide circle, careful to watch for signs of movement. She would play long-range defender, watching for openings while her siblings played their own respective roles. Koko was their brute strength, and Taka...well, he would have to do his best as his sister's right-paw, just as they had discussed.

Takataka stuck completely close to his eldest sister, so close that their bodies were physically touching. He moved with her, baring his teeth at the lon. He couldn't help but make a sound of his own, but whether it was a savage warning or a noise of fear leaking from his throat was unclear. The lion was tall and strong-looking, and the adolescent male swallowed, preparing himself for the imminent fight.

Blood-red eyes igniting, Kokoto darted forward and snapped at the male.

The fight had begun.

Clearly there were ready to die for this cause of there. Simi didn't even understand what had driven the hyenas to actually attack. Normally they just lingered in their graveyard, chasing away what lions got too close. Something had happened, and Simi wanted to know what it was. Not on these terms, though. He felt the cry of a lion as it fell, and anger surged through his body.

"Leave!" He demanded. Before there was time to react, the hyenas attacked. Trying to keep an eye on the one that circled around him, he realized that it was more dangerous to not pay attention to the largest of the three. She clearly was calling the shots. Simi pulled himself back, feeling a trickle of blood down his leg.

With a roar, Simi lunged towards the two hyenas, a swat of his paw to separate the two of them. He seemed like the weak link, but next to the strongest he was going to be hard to take down.

The taste of the lion's blood was a welcome one, and Kokoto felt even more powerful than before. They could take this lion down. The three of them working together...they could do it. She had already landed a bite. Scanning her target and sticking close to her brother, she watched and waited for the lion to make his move. She didn't have to wait long at all--only a moment.

With a small cry of shock, Takataka jumped away from his sister's side, quick to dodge the lion's huge paw. The roar sent shivers down his spine and his stomach turned. Circling around, the adolescent hastily made his way back to his sister's side, relieved to see she had managed to dodge it--for the most part. To his horror, a claw had caught the side of her face and blood trickled down her jawline. He found it difficult to stay as close to her now. He dreaded another paw-swipe.

Seeing her chance to strike, Tufani darted in to take a snap at the male's back ankles before skittering back to her place. Three-on-one would be easy. They could do it. She knew they could.

Koko was snarling, lips dripping with crimson. Upon seeing Tufani's quick attack, the eldest sister jumped at the lion and attempted to grab hold of his neck.

Thankfully the mane did most of its job. Simi didn't feel the jaws until the hyena must have really clamped down. He knew that if he hadn't had his mane he'd be in a lot more trouble than he was now. Still, with his back legs injured, Simi knew that he wasn't going to be able to move very quickly anymore. He didn't want to strain them too much, but it was growing nearly impossible for Simi to handle all three of these hyenas at once.

Throwing his head around, he charged at the more timid looking hyena, trying to make the odds more favorable. He didn't want to kill them, but he wasn't about to let himself die here, either. "Bloodthirsty beasts!!"

Shaken loose like a fly on a bucking buffalo, Kokoto stumbled backwards, paws sliding as she attempted to hold her ground. The following events happened so quickly, she scarcely had time to think.

Tufani gaped and zipped forward like a gazelle, her body moving on its own as she moved to fulfill her silent vow that right now, at that moment, she had to prevent what she saw was about to happen. But she arrived at the lion's hackles too late.

The beast's silhouette over him, Takataka cried out in terror as he was completely bowled off of his feet. He choked on what he knew was his own blood, staring around as he toppled through the air, feeling surreal--as though he were moving slowly, and he was dreaming. But it was happening.

The horrifying truth was that he was really there with his sisters, fighting a lion in the middle of a war.

As his body slammed into the ground, he let out a high-pitched, gurgling yelp. Feeling dizzy and trying his best to scramble to his feet, adrenaline controlling his movements, he was sickeningly aware of the splattered crimson that slipped under his paws. As he looked over his shoulder, he managed to catch a glimpse of Kokoto throwing all of her mass and weight into the savage lion.

"Koko!" Tufani shrieked, more than obviously against the decision her big sister had just made. As the lion's anger kept rising, she knew it would be harder to land big blows, and Kokoto was making a big mistake. Tufani resisted the urge to go to her brother's side, and went to assist her sister instead. It was the smarter move.

"Son of a b***h--!" Kokoto roared through clenched fangs, smashing her body into the lion as hard as she could.

He was DEAD for that!

As his attack claimed its victim, it brought forth another level of chaos that he didn't think battle was capable of. He had changed the thought process of the older, more experienced hyena female. He was slowly feeling less and less pity for these creatures that had had plenty of times to escape. They continued to battle, and as such forfeited their lives to him. Simi's body tensed, his brain warning him against using his back legs for too long. The younger female had done more damage than the King realized, and he wouldn't notice it until later. Adrenaline was keeping him going, and the fact that he would not give them the victory if he died.

Simi did not react to the older hyena's rage, at least not vocally. One was down, and the other female wasn't going to be as much trouble now that his attention was only split two ways instead of three. With a look of pure contempt in his eyes, he did his best to absorb the attack that Kokoto dealt him. He felt himself fall, but being one of nine, he knew how to keep this from going against him. He did his best to pull her down with him, his teeth searching for a way to throw her off before she pinned him, his mind too occupied to care as to where the other younger female was. He'd deal with her once the real threat was done.

The sound of Takataka coughing on his own blood sent Tufani's hairs on end, his tiny gurgles and sputters inching their way under her skin. But she had to force herself to remain unshaken. She had to be completely sharp and ready at all times during this fight, for all of their sakes. Still, it was more difficult than she would say. She was inexperienced, and it showed.

Eyes fixed on her older sister toppling violently with the brute of a lion, Tufani made another move. Ducking in quickly while the creature was wrapped up in handling her big sister, she went in to twist and tear at the open wounds she had caused to the lion's legs, but she ended up getting kicked off accidentally by her own sister before she could even take one bite. Heart jumping, she skittered backwards and spit out her own blood. Dammit!

Eyes wide as the moon, Takataka watched his sister take on the lion by themselves. The sight of his big sister being in such a situation made him sick, and for several moments he couldn't move from where the lion had left him. Frozen, shaking, and utterly terrified, he watched like a helpless pup. He hated himself. After all his older sisters had done for him, he wasn't any help. His ribs were broken, and something was causing him to cough up his own blood. He had to move, he knew he had to move, or someone was going to die.

But before the adolescent could formulate any kind of encouraging pep-talk for himself within the confines of his mind, his big sister's fight took a turn for the worse. Heart sinking into some place cold, his jaw dropped and he gaped openly, oxygen vanishing from his lungs.

Growling and snarling, Kokoto continued to press into the lion, doing her best to find any open spots on his body where she could rip at his flesh. Her attempts were pointless, as the lion was quite good at holding her back, and scaring her back with his gnashing teeth. She was bleeding and wounded, but she was a stubborn animal, and loath to give up when it came to a challenge, especially when that challenge had to do with protecting her family.

Perhaps stupidly, she continued to struggle against the male, meeting his offense with more offense instead of defense. He was bigger than her, and persistent, and somehow his attempts to grab at her with his teeth paid off, and she felt his fangs sing deep into her throat. Gasping in shock, she pushed herself away, blood spurting and flesh tearing. It was an overwhelming mistake--she had helped him tear out her throat.

She felt herself falling, losing any kind of weight against the lion. And as she fell, everything fell with her--the earth, the sky, the cries of death and suffering around her, roars of anguish and loss, Tufani's shouts and Takataka's sputtering.

Kokoto fell right in front of the lion, guard lost, completely and utterly within his grasp. She scrambled to her paws, but it was entirely too late.

His eyesight blurring from adrenaline seeping out of him. Pain was starting to cloud his thoughts, but he knew more than to let himself stop here. He wasn't going to die and give the advantage to the hyenas. What would happen to the moral of his pride if something like that happened?

Being a King had its downsides, and he was seeing them now. With two hyenas down, he felt himself slowing down. Blood littered his body, a mixture of his own and the hyenas that surrounded him. One was dying, another was almost there, and the last one...

Simi shifted his head to look at the younger female, Tufani. As he tried to turn back to face the demonish Kokoto, he felt his back legs completely give out, and he crashed onto the ground with a loud thud, not too far from Kokoto.

He...felt pity for her. She was dying, and he wanted to put her out of her pain. But now, he felt his own strength draining from him.

Koko stared ahead, looking directly at the lion, yet not at him at all. Blood filled her throat, clogging her airways and choking her to death. Her body shuddered and trembled from the agony of many wounds, but she found, strangely, she could feel nothing at all.

She, too, crumpled to the ground. Her vision blurred and became white, then black, then supremely clear. In the muffled, ringing noise of her surroundings, she could make out the cries of her siblings. Dumb brats, she thought, almost smirking.

She was going to have to break her promise if they hung around after she was gone.

Stupid pups...

Eyes blank and listless, the hyena turned her gaze skyward.

Huh...

She hadn't realized what a beautiful day it was...

Kokoto attempted one last inhale before she finally slipped away.

"KOKOTO!!" Takataka screamed, voice cracking. Tufani's eyes were fixated on the bloodied form of her big sister. Jaw open and trembling, she refused to believe in reality. Everything had happened far too quickly.

Their sister was no longer breathing.

She was gone.

Vibrating from fury and loss, Takataka clenched his teeth hard, skull shaking with the force. He ripped open his jaws and let out an explosive battle cry, sound mingling with his sister's own cry.

The two of them ran together and charged the male lion, ready to destroy him with everything they had, even if it cost them their own lives.

They would fight him to the death.

Simi was struggling now, and he felt himself falter. Swaying, his back legs finally completely gave out on him. The pain was rushing to his brain, overwhelming his senses. The angry cries from the younger hyenas urged him to move before he died, but he felt that the worst of the thread was over. The older one was dead, and all her talents gone with her soul.

Still, if he didn't fight back at all, they could find that sweet spot in his throat and kill him.

Snarling, he felt himself lose his strength. Funny how all he could think about was how he had never had to spill blood before, until this day...

For quite some time, Rei had thought his life was moving too quickly. He had left his family as soon as he’d become an adult and set out to find the lands of his ancestors. He had found the Pridelands much quicker than expected and upon falling in love with the lovely Mzuza, he had hastily decided that his little visit to the Pridelands was turning into something much more serious than he had hoped. And now that he had returned to pride after a long and miserable stay in the rogue lands, he was hoping to finally settle down and live a peaceful life. Instead, he had found the Pridelands in an uproar. The hyenas were up to no good, the little red cub he’d once befriended was not really that little anymore and Rei discovered he had left behind nine (yes, nine!) cubs with Mzuza.

And now, only a few days after his arrival, war had broken out and he was running to a battlefield to fight alongside lions he barely even knew to protect the lands he wished to call home. With a thundering roar, the purple-eyed lion had joined the fray and for a while it seemed he somehow managed to only fight single opponents, which clearly gave him the advantage despite not having much experience fighting with hyenas. So it was with little more than a few scratches and bruises that Rei caught a familiar pelt out of the corner of his eye. It was the exact same hue as Mzuza’s and the orange lion didn’t even hesitate before running at full speed to aid the fallen lion. He was not planning to stop until he was right between the lion and the smaller hyenas so if anything got in the way… it would probably go flying. And he would succeed today.
