I'm in a Medieval to Rennaisance European History class, and one fact in my readings jumped out at me.
The origin of the word Heresy: from hairesis, which only means "school of thought" or "personal opinion."
It's kind of fascinating how a word whose meanig was so innocuous became connected with sin.

That's because the Medieval and Renaissance Church did not want their congregations to think for themselves. The parishioners were to think what they were told to think. The very idea of a Renaissance was a threat to the Churches power. Please remember that the Church of that time was EXTREMELY corrupt.

We're reading The Venerab;e Bede right now and I'm learning such fascinating tidbits as "[Britain] produces a great deal of excellent jet, which is black and sparkling, and burns when put to the fire, and when set on fire, drives away serpents; being warmed with rubbing, it attracts whatever is applied to it, like amber."--Must look up magical properties of jet. And amber. Also, this about Ireland. " No reptiles are found there, and no snake can live there; for, though snakes are often carried thither out of Britain, as soon as the ship comes near the shore, and the scent of the air reaches them, they die. "
I never knew! O_O Ireland is allergic to snakes!

Rubbing amber with silk or similar materials was one of the earliest ways of studying electricity because it would build a static charge.

From what I'm researching, they often seemed to be worn on necklaces in combination with one another. They seem to reflect night and day somehow, or two halves of the same whole. Still figuring it out.

I never knew! O_O Ireland is allergic to snakes! or the snakes are allergic to Ireland. Whatever. >_< I'd been reading Venerable Bede for like 2 hours at that point....I was a little frazzled. Especially when he started banging on about the TERRIBLE SIN of not believing in original sin. In the middle of his history of Britain! Stay on focus, Bede!
