HOKAY, so recently I played a hack of FF3/6 for the SNES and thought that it had some pretty good ideas. I then looked into some of the tools that were used. Long story short, I've been working on a hack of my own starring cast members from HA.

Here's some stuff that I got so far:

  • Kyle V replacing Terra Branford
  • Jenny replacing Locke Cole
  • James replacing Edgar Roni Figaro
  • Joe replacing Sabin Rene Figaro
  • Dani replacing Shadow
  • Anthony replacing Cyan Garamonde
  • Noelle replacing Gau
  • Bobbi replacing Celes Chere
  • Jon replacing Setzer Gabbiani
  • Dawn replacing Mog
  • Matt replacing Strago Magus
  • Kyla replacing Relm Arrowny
  • Amy replacing Gogo
  • Kyle M replacing Umaro


There are only 14 character slots available in the game, so i'm sorry I to say I can't squeeze everyone in. I really want to, but then I'd have to learn hex code and machine code and Square's specific coding for just FF6 and then asjdhasjkdhaskjdhas.

I have also already hacked in everyone's Summon as an Esper. That includes Tital, Leviathan, Magic Pot, Ultima, Sylph and Garuda.

All the spells are already coded in, and I just have to do the animations for them. So with that, I am left with:

-Editing the storyline
-Weapon sprites (5-6 unique for each character I imagine)
-Character sprites (If anyone wants to contribute sprites for the main cast that would be a biiiiiiiiiiiiig help)
-Tweaking character stats
-Making Relics that teach each character their specific spell set

That's all I have for now, so please lemme know if you have any questions or anything like that.

HOLY HOLLERING HIPPOS MATHYMATH!!! This sounds like an amazing undertaking! OwO And so much fun to boot! I wouldn't mind helping you with the sprites and stuff. Would you prefer that we stick to FF6 sprites? :3

Mizu's working on some sprites as well, but the more the merrier! :3 Please do keep them to FF6 style, 16 colors at most. If you want to draw portraits as well that'd be great, and then we can find a way to pixelize them. Portraits are 40x40, 16 colours as well. Any contributions are fantastic! Thanks in advance.

UPDOOT

After getting some feedback from totally legit beta testers, I decided to change a few things up.

  • Kyle V:
    • Comes with Cure as well as Banish so beginning won't be too much of a struggle

  • Jenny:
    • Replace Gravity with a weaker Comet
    • Give her Meteo to replace Comet
    • Now replaces Setzer and uses Control

  • James:
    • Now replaces Cyan and uses Magitek (Hexagun)

  • Bobbi:
    • Now replaces Edgar and uses Tool (Bow)

  • Dani:
    • Debating giving a Cure spell for balance

  • Tony:
    • Remove Chain Lightning to free up a spell slot for a general Cure spell

  • Kichi:
    • Now replaces Locke and uses Steal/Mug

  • Noelle:
    • Replaced Rage with Fight and gave Health

  • Dawn:
    • Modify dances so there are sets that only do buffs, ailments, etc.

  • Matt:
    • Replaced Blue Magic with Mimic
    • Can learn other party member's weaker spells by equipping their relics

  • Kyla:
    • Debating adding a Holy spell

  • Amy:
    • Removed Health
    • Relics also give X Fight to represent Trigger Happy


Also, thanks to Mizu, I was able to implement Joe's sprite! Results were... Mixed XD Ignore the white mage sprite, that came with the ROM I be testing on.

So this is why I was talking about palettes to some of you and why they want to burn down my home. I'm still looking for a way to get around each character having a hard coded palette number, but here's a list of sprites that share the same number as Joe:

Edgar, Celes, Imp, General Leo, Ghost, handful of palette swapped NPCs

Also sprite sheets are VERY finicky, and I had to move around sprites on the sheet Mizu made before I could properly implement it (don't worry about it Mizu). In hopes of saving everyone some time, in the next day or so I'll rip the actual sheets from the game so everyone can see the general layout and work with that.

Edit: Okay! I found a way to change assigned palettes. Also, turns out there are 3 sprites for each character that aren't affected by Import/Export in my editors, so I'll have to manually copy them into the editor. Once I rip out the sheets I can, I'll point out what sprites are missing.

The third sprites I didn't bother with are just the character's hair flapping in the ride pose. As for that knocked down pose, the maximum dimensions for that sprite are 24 pixels wide and 16 pixels high.
