Crickets were striking up a symphony in the cool night air, playing lullabies for all the forest critters. The stars twinkled high above in the heavens, and yet they were blocked from Dallon's view by the tree's leafs. Night time. The purple striped foal's favorite time. It was his chance to slip away from his mother and father's watchful eyes and avoid their paranoia. The young foal couldn't quite understand why his parents sheltered him and his brothers so vigorously. What harm could a few crickets do? At least, that is all Dallon thought there was out and about in the safety of the night.

Never before had there been a time where the colt ran into another Soquili. Especially not at night. He made small hoof prints as he walked around in the freshly dug dirt left behind from animal burrows being made. He studied the split in his hooves and noticed how they differed slightly from his father's. He wondered why that was and made a mental note to ask about it the next day. Dallon made sure to stomp extra hard into the earth as he walked along, glancing over his shoulder every now and then to make sure he was leaving imprints. How else was he suppose to find his way back home? There was a small price to pay for his little navigation plan, and that was the element of surprise. His stomping surely made any nearby creatures well aware of his presence..

The stallion had only recently woken from his slumber. He looked a bit of a mess, with his long, ebony hair tangled and in need of a good grooming. Unfortunately for the stallion, his appearance often mattered little - no matter how hard he strived to keep his unruly mane and tail in order, it never seemed to last. And most raccoon's and smaller critters fled from the sight of him. Not that he really blamed them . . . with his glowing eyes, his massive stature, his scars, and his carnivorous nature, if the tables were turned, he likely wouldn't approach either.

Picking his way quietly through the woods, Reject was glad for the dark shadows. He stepped quietly for such a large creature, his wings tucked firmly to his sides as he desperately tried to keep them from view. Night time was the only time the stallion moved, if he could help it. Even then, he stuck to areas that were less traveled, and avoided others to the best of his ability. He really was a socially awkward sort of stallion, and hated the hear the worried whispers and pleas of others whom thought him out to kill; perhaps what was even worse was the staring. . . always with the staring. In all of his years of age, the stallion couldn't shake his anxieties while around others. He knew he was hated, knew he was unwelcome, and knew there was always a sense of fear. . . .

Such was his lot in life. If he wasn't feared, he was hated and picked upon, driven out by the kalona community for being too weak, too much of mixed blood and mixed feelings. He was rejected by both sides of the spectrum, which is why he kept a night schedule, and why he did his best to avoid others.

Tonight was no different. The stallion moved slowly through the underbrush, and was searching out the nearest water source when his ears twitched. What . . . there was the sound of stomping, though whatever was making the noise didn't appear to be particularly heavy or large. The stallion stopped his tracks, curious but worried all the same. They sounded like they were heading directly towards him, and Reject wasn't sure whether he should bolt or stand his ground. Deciding that the other might not know of his presence, he decided to step purposely on a nearby twig, and spread his wings to ruffle the local foliage.

There.

That should give clear warning someone else was there, and likely scare off whatever might be out there.

Dallon wasn't worried about attracting any sort of attention to himself. If others so happened to hear him what was the worst that could happen? His youthful mind couldn't exactly conjure up the dangers of being a tiny foal out on his own, surrounded by darkness and unknown creatures. Creatures that were five times his size with sharper teeth, leather wings, spaded tails. Things that carried animal pelts on their backs and bared paws where hooves should be. The things that his mother feared to tell him about because she thought it would give him nightmares.

Just as he was getting lost in his dreamy thoughts of being the founder of some new hideaway or discovering a new and unique creature he could tame himself and befriend, he heard the faintest breakage of a twig nearby. His tiny hooves froze solid in their imprints and his red eyes floated in the blackness, gazing in the direction in which the disturbance came from. Instinct told him to turn and run but natural curiosity kept him lingering. He lifted a hoof, debating on if he should turn or press onward.

He was about to turn but his last minute decision was to explore. Perhaps it was a monster he could tame. Yes, that would prove to his mother that he was mature enough to hold his own out in the big bad world. This charming little colt often struggled with being treated as a child. He felt he was far more responsible than his brothers after all. Though, moments like these didn't exactly help his case. He wedged himself between two bountiful bushes that held poisonous little red berries. He peered through them to find a giant, wings out stretched and stance strong and determined. Young Dallon was taken back by his differences but it didn't hold him off for long. He emerged from the foliage, making his tiny presence known right before the towering beast. "Was that you making all that noise?" he simply asked, leaving his question so awkward in the silence of the night.

Damnit. His tactic didn't work. The rustle within the foliage grew louder, and Reject prepared himself for a potential attack when a small head poked out of the bushes. It was . . . a foal. Considering how late it was, the stallion suddenly wondered if perhaps if his parents would come seeking him out. That really was the last thing he needed . . . to have to explain his intentions, to get potentially driven off and out of the lands.

Damnit all . . . . this was just his luck.

It had been a long time since the long haired stallion had stumbled upon a foal. He did his best to avoid them though, if only because he knew that while he wasn't a great threat, other kaona species were. Furthermore, no parent wanted to take the chance and often drove Reject away long before he had an opportunity to explain himself. Foals were nothing but trouble . . . . and this one, considering the time, was probably no less a nuisance!

Lowering his wings, yellow eyes glowed in the night and he gave a small snort. "It was." He glowered down at the small foal, watching as the little foal stepped out. It really was an unusual sort . . . Not only did a small horn jut from his head, but he had gangly legs, a strange form of cloven hooves, and . . . wings. Perhaps the most amusing thing was he had no tail, just a stump. What a peculiar creatures. . . .

"You shouldn't be here, you know." Reject himself took a step back, trying to put distance between himself and the foal. Just in case. With luck, his gruff voice and glowing eyes would scare the little scamp off. Reject himself didn't want company, and didn't want any trouble. . . even from a little foal.

Dallon had never before seen a Soquili so absolutely different from himself, and yet alike all at the same time. He appeared to be a fierce brute with his terrifying features. This included a sharpened horn, much more detailed and threatening than his own, a menacing mouth of dagger like teeth, spiked wings that were thin enough to peep through and what intrigued the young colt most of all was his eyes. They glowed like the full moon. Reject was clearly not as talkative as most he encountered but that was alright because in a way Dallon understood this. That's how he felt connected to this monstrous giant. They both shied away from interaction. Dallon wouldn't be pressing into this matters if not for the desperate desire for research.

It's not that Dallon was a fool about things, though. Every twitch, action, snort that Reject gave it caused the purple foal to jolt or twitch with reconsideration. Leading his mind to think if he really should be doing this. This was his greatest find to date though. The most fascinating beast he had encountered.

Dal's mood was suddenly having a downfall as he was nearly shooed away by the stallion. A tiny tilt of his head with a countenance of second guessing was all that Dallon displayed for the elder stallion. After a minute of silence he took weary steps forward, watching for any signs of a threat. "Why is it that you push others away?" It was a simple question but one that would help Dallon to understand his own condition.

Reject honestly wasn't sure what to do. The little foal had stayed quiet, and seemed to be giving him a look over. Being stared at wasn't unusual for the stallion, especially by the young. They were perhaps the worst when it came to gaping and whispering or inquiring about him. It wasn't that he minded them looking. . . it was the judgement that so often followed he abhored.

Dallon was no different, even if he was a seemingly harmless little foal. The young could be blind to the differences between one breed the next, but that was the just the problem. He hadn't been taught that those with kalona features needed to be regarded with caution, then it was very likely he might wind up killed by a real kalona. Reject didn't want to play a part, even unknowingly, when it came to the death of a foal. Granted, if his parents hadn't struck the fear of the spirits in him at this age then tough luck. . . but the stallion wasn't as heartless as he sometimes tried to be.

At least without a heart one didn't have to feel.

As the small, winged and horned creature studied him, Reject stifled a groan as Dallon approached. No. This wasn't how it was supposed to go at all! Did he have to gnash his teeth and scare the young foal to get him back home!? Even if he did feel inclined to play the role he hated, he knew his luck. As soon as he started looking fierce, some adult would appear and pick a fight, try to kill him, drive him off. . . . Little realizing he was only trying to save the foal from real nightmares.

He couldn't win no matter what he tried.

"Because it's for their own good," he spoke, voice low. No one needed to get tied in to his drama, and it was better to push them to the wayside then let them linger. He was a busy stallion, anyway. How could he explain to this foal that the longer he stayed, the more trouble Reject would get in if his parents cropped up?! "Isn't anyone watching you?" He questioned, tail flicking a bit nervously behind him.
