This is a private roleplay between Xiu [Honeybii] and Kiran [Kazu-chan].

Setting:

In a forested region, Kiran works on practicing his hand seals, unaware of any other Lunarian who might be passing nearby.

Kiran grumbled as, yet again, another attempt to perfect his skills at using the hand seal form of magic failed. He couldn't even make a flicker that time! Back at the Academy when he was still a student, he had learned the basics of magic and that he was apparently most proficient in the use of fire. Right now, he wondered if his instructors had been horribly wrong on that count. Learning the hand seals was easy. He had been learning, and making up his own, hand signals since he was young in order to communicate more efficiently with his mute sister.

But being absolutely perfect with the hand seals meant nothing if he couldn't control the actual magic. He had never learned proper control, and his attempts even to make a simple small flame usually failed with a pathetic fizzle and barely a wisp of smoke. Sometimes, he felt like it would be best to simply give up. He could fight well enough, and he was training daily with his weapon of choice: a pair of tonfa. Did he really need to learn magic on top of that?

His jaw set tightly as he frowned. Of course, he knew the answer was yes. Other Lunarians learned to use magic in different forms as well. To be able to fight and defend against them, it only made sense that he needed to learn and master his own magic. Gritting his teeth, Kiran ran through the well practiced hand seals as he concentrated on willing the flame to appear. His frustration at constantly failing boiled over, after building up for the past several hours of his training. A ball of fire exploded before him, its intensely hot flames licking at his hands before fizzling out when his concentration broke.

"Gah!" Kiran shouted out as he whacked his hands on his pants, trying to put out the fire searing his flesh. The brush of fabric against his raw flesh irritated the burns, only adding to the pain he felt. He closed his eyes and tried to focus his mind on anything but terrible burning that lingered in his hands, red and wrinkled and puckered by the flames. With a wince, Kiran cradled his hands to his chest, feeling the slight tremble that didn't seem like it would stop any time soon.

The sudden explosion startled Xiu and the number of finches that had been resting in the tree branches above him. The birds took to the sky, screeching madly for being disturbed. Heart pounding, Xiu took a moment to calm himself and take a few deep breaths. That had been a very loud something. It had sounded like an avalanche at first, but now Xiu wasn't so sure. Getting to his feet, he left his half eaten lunch and a sleeping Bai Hu under the oak tree as he went to investigate.

Dark smoke, thick and black, was what caught it eye first. It wasn't a huge amount, but the thin trickle of it was enough to get him moving. Keeping his eyes on the smoke, Xiu pushed through the underbrush, not sure what he was going to find. Images of Bataar's yurt on fir flickered through him mind, but he shook them away, telling himself firmly that Bataar was nowhere in the area. He thought of Huojin, with his fireworks, as well, but the boy had been missing recently so Xiu didn't expect him either.

Xiu didn't expect to see what he saw either, when he finally pushed into the shallow clearing. "Oh, gods!" He sucked in a sharp breath and all but ran to the person kneeling in the grass, clutching his hands. Xiu touched the figure's back gently at his arrival. That blue green hair was familiar and Xiu hissed softly when he realized who it was. "Kiran? Kiran what happened?" Xiu didn't paused long enough for an answer before he quickly went to work to try and heal Kiran's poor hands as fast as possible.

Working quickly, Xiu pulled a small piece of paper from his robes, the brown parchment scribble with strange characters. He bit his thumb, smearing the bead of blood that appeared across the paper, activating the charm. The thing flashed blue with power before crumbling into dust. Xiu soaked up the building energy from the charm, now able to draw water from the air around him. Deftly with a healer's touch, Xiu took Kiran's hands, drawing them out until they were palm up so that he could direct the enchanted water to slick over Kiran's hands until every inch of the burns were covered.

"Just relax," he murmured softly as he activated the healing spell. The water pulsed with a soft light, soothing Kiran's wounds. Xiu wasn't able to tell if the wounds would scar or not and wished he himself was more powerful. "What in the world happened?"

He tried to think of what to do now. He had picked a rather secluded area, well away from any crowds, for the exact reason of not accidentally causing harm to anyone. It would take him a while to get back into town and find someone to heal his injuries. At the very least, his legs hadn't been injured, so making the walk back into town wouldn't actually be too much trouble. But what he needed was immediate healing. He knew enough that leaving a burn like this unattended for too long would result in horrible scarring. How long would it take him to get back into town and find a healer? His mind suggested too long.

A noise from the brush alerted him. Kiran's first instinct was to go for his tonfa in case of a surprise attack. But with his hands burned, he wouldn't be able to hold them very well. And the idea seemed silly when he thought about it. Who would be out here waiting to stage an ambush on him? He remained still, waiting and listening as the person approached. Or perhaps it was just some wild animal?

Then he heard someone's voice. Every muscle in his body tensed up, ready to spring if an attack came. But then the person spoke his name. Kiran blinked in surprise. He knew that voice, didn't he? "Xiu?" he asked, turning his head to get a better look at the young man. Xiu was much older than the last time they met, but Kiran supposed he had done some growing up as well during that time.

"It's noth-" Kiran hissed at the fiery stinging dancing over his reddened flesh. To say it was nothing was a horrible inaccuracy and an obvious lie, and Xiu would clearly not buy it if he had finished that statement. He winced when Xiu took his hands but resisted the urge to yank them back to the protective hold against his chest. Cool water washed over his flesh where the burns reached. It tingled soothingly, and Kiran was impressed by Xiu's mastery over the element.

Kiran glanced up at Xiu then his gaze darted away as embarrassment set in on him. "Just a little backfire." So very accurate! Kiran hadn't expected the fire to grow so big so quickly or to attack him. He understood all the more why the instructors had constantly reminded him to calm his emotions and clears his thoughts to focus only on working the magic.

"It's alright," Xiu soothed, "accidents happen." He'd had no idea that Kiran was able to use sealing spells, but supposed every lunarian had a bit of magic in them. He just wished Kiran hadn't been practicing my himself! Xiu had always been told by instructors to make sure that a few other people were around to take care of any injuries that occured. Xiu thanked the stars that he'd heard the boom of the fire. He wasn't sure what Kiran would have done if he'd had to make his way into town with his crisped hands.

Quietly, Xiu continued the healing, the cool water easing whatever pains the wound was causing. A few minutes in and the blisters were disappearing and Kiran's hands were turning to their normal, lively color. When Xiu finally drew the water back, all the was left of the burns where faint outlines of white, making the wound looks months old.

"There, that's the best I can do I think," Xiu announced, his voice slightly winded from the exertion he'd put into the healing. "I think those scars will go away. I'm sorry I'm not more adept at healing." Xiu still had Kiran's hands in his own as he checked them over, turning them gently this way and that before letting go completely once he was satisfied. With that out of the way, he could ask Kiran what he'd been thinking.

Xiu smiled first, managing to keep himself from reprimanding the other, knowing it wasn't really his place. His voice WAS a bit chiding though when he said, "You should be more careful. It's better to practice with others, you know?" Xiu patted Kiran's shoulder in a friendly manner before brushing a bit of soot that had settled there. "Have you just started training with your magic?"

"Yeah," Kiran mumbled as he watched the healing process. After learning what element that he was most proficient in, he had never really paid attention to the other elements. Water, it seemed now, was quite useful for more than just battle magic. He never realized that water could be used for healing magic. A frown settled onto his face. All he really knew about fire was its destructive nature. There wasn't much he could think of using fire for other than blasting an enemy.

"It's better than nothing." Kiran snapped his head up to Xiu, realizing the comment might be taken wrong. "I would probably be a lot worse off if you hadn't happened along just now. Thanks. I mean, really, thanks for the healing." He felt a bit flustered thanking someone for healing him. In the past, whenever he was injured in a fight, he normally went home and his mother and sister fussed over him, taking of whatever scrape or bruise that he had received.

When his hands were freed, Kiran pulled them back, glancing them over as he flexed his fingers ever so slightly. Except for the remaining white lines, it was almost like his hands hadn't been burned at all. Even if the faint scars never faded, the use of his hands had been saved, and he would have little difficulty fighting barehanded or with his tonfa.

The chiding tone in Xiu's voice made him wince like a scolded child. "Well, I learned the basics back at the academy," he confessed, glancing away as he scratched at one cheek. It was embarrassing to admit the truth of it. Everyone else seemed to have picked up on using and mastering magic while he continued to flounder, not even able to master a simple seal. He sighed, somewhat disgruntled over the matter. "I was just thinking that it was time to get a bit more serious about training with hand seals." He leaned back on his hands, shifting his legs so that one bent under him and the other leg was bent up to his chest. "I was concerned about accidentally hurting someone else. I never thought that I would wind up hurting myself."

Xiu flushed and ducked his head apologetically. "I'm sorry," he said again, indicating the incomplete healing. He was glad that Kiran didn't seem to be angry about it, but he didn't feel bad that he didn't heal the other's hands completely. After all, he SHOULD be able to do such things, but Xiu still found himself learning things slowly. Magic, like fighting, seemed to be taking him longer to master than anything else. Sure, he could read the text, heck, he'd memorized them, but implementing said knowledge was easier said than done!

"It was good of you to think of others," Xiu replied with a smile, "though be sure to think of yourself next time, too," he added teasingly. He nearly found himself playfully bumping Kiran, but refrained, unsure if how the boy would take it. He didn't know the other noble that well after all. "You should think about finding a master to teach you, I think. It might make things easier to learn. I'm kind of slow learner so finding a master really helped me out." Blushing again, Xiu flicked some of his hair out of his face.

Trying to dispel his embarrassment over admitting his faults, Xiu stood up suddenly and offered his hand to Kiran. "Hey, I was just in the middle of lunch. I have a lot of food, would you like to join me?" He wanted to make Kiran feel better and forget about the accident. Xiu found it wasn't goo to dwell on such things. That and he was still very hungry!

Kiran waved it off with a grin. "You don't need to apologize," he said, seeing no reason for Xiu to be sorry. Even if scars remained, Xiu did a great job healing the burns, which were the biggest concerns of his injuries. Kiran could live with some minor scarring so long as it didn't interfere with his ability to fight.

"I never really got more than a wisp of smoke to come out before. I wasn't expecting it to just suddenly explode on me." He laughed, trying not to seem too embarrassed. With a sigh, he shook his head. "I guess I should look for a master." A frown settled onto his face as he looked away. Sometimes, it felt like all the fighters around him were picking up on wielding their magic much faster than he was. He never thought of himself as stupid, though he knew was no genius either, but it made him feel incredibly slow in comparison. He turned back to Xiu, and a bright smile stretched over his lips. "You're better at this whole magic thing than I am." He laughed. "I bet you haven't caused injury to yourself while training." But searching out a master to train him how to master his hand seal magic was probably a smart idea.

Kiran took the hand offered to him and pushed off the ground to climb to his feet. He brushed off some grass and leaves and dirt from his pants. "Food sounds great!" Training always made him very hungry afterward, and he hadn't thought ahead to bring anything with him for after training.
