I may be way off here, (or there may be something in my coffee) but are Yuppies somehow related to Hippies?
Heck I'm not even sure what a Yuppie is...I just know that's what we called the customers at Panera Bread when I worked there.
...anywho I'm probably wrong to assume any connection, but its suspicious that two different social classes would have such similar names.
Am I trippin?

Actually, the two stereotypes are quite... polor opposites. Haha.
A "yuppie" is a stereotype for the SUV driving, diamond ring wearing, living in a two story house, throwing their trash out the window type of person. Someone who's been suburanilized.

Maybe you mean "yippie"? Yuppies are extremely bourgeois, whereas hippies are more or less bohemian. They're about 180 degrees apart.
BTW, are you a Monty Python fan. "And now for something completely different....a man with a tape recorder-up his nose!"

i think that yuppies are associated with hippies because although they have money they are more concerned about their health, exercise, and the environment.
i don't call soccer moms yuppies. i call them suburban soccer moms. yuppies usually live in the city and might not even drive a car. hooray for public transportation!!!!!!

People still use the word "yuppie"? Wow... I always thought that was just an 80s thing. XD.
Some of those yuppie people do care about the envirnment, but the difference is they'll shell out some donation money and have charity banquests but you won't ever see them actually go and walk around in the forest they're trying to save. They won't actually go to Africa and help the starving people. But the hippies, we're the ones that join the Peace Corps. and go hike in the woods. 3nodding

I had to say that, those who are familiar with Monty Python's brilliance might pick up on the previous statement. xp

yuppies came up in the 80s and was an acronym for "Young, Upwardly-mobile Professionals", the source of the ME decade.
Parents were seldom included in this group as upwardly mobile professionals were too busy to have a brood. but for the few who did become parents, they SURELY did not drive the kids around to soccer practice (they hired staff for that sort of thing).
They did accummulate a lotta wealth and stuff tho. No matter how you define hippy, yuppie is typically at the other end of the rainbow... or spectrum if you're on the other side! smile
