Kai had left her brothers to have their squabbles on their own so she could be without them. Males could be so troublesome, that she knew. She stayed on the borders now, watching, waiting. She was sure to conserve energy, and she knew she was a bit from from the center of the pride. However, she was looking for a glint of hope, a glint of water shining even from some remote distance.

That distance she would travel to get water for her pride, her family.

Blinking, crimson eyes lay on the golden sand and she sucked air in through her teeth, hard. It screeched and she saw a small lizard dart from one dune to the next, surely frightened by the noise. Perhaps it thought Kai a hawk or eagle.

She was tired, thirsty, but she would keep watch at the borders, and keep an eye for any sign.

The orders had been given to help look for water, but her body needed rest as well as her mind.

Earlier this morning, Kope had killed a small waterbuck for his breakfast, just outside the lands: he'd been fortunate to come upon a small herd still in the scrublands, and had easily overtaken the weakest member. He'd been rather surprised at how easy it was, not yet knowing of the drought that plagued the lands, but had shrugged it off as he devoured his kill, leaving the rest to buzzards and scavengers as he idly picked his way through the dunes nearby.

He'd come across a Firekin cub later in the day, but had not gotten much information from the child. Annoyed, he trudged through the edges of the lands, looking for something to drink - and someone to talk to.

To his surprise, he spotted another likely member of the pride, resting in the blazing heat of the day. That in itself was a little unusual: most sane members typically tried to find shade during this hour. Perhaps a need for water or prey had driven this lioness out here; or perhaps it was something else entirely. She could also be a guard for the lands, he thought idly; maybe some things hadn't changed, even if so much clearly had.

"Afternoon," he called out, in his typical royal drawl, as he got closer. "Damned hot day out here, isn't it?"

Kai's ears twitched as she heard the sand move, and in response she shuffled her forepaws into the sand and back and then spread her toes. She hesitated growling. She knew it wasn't either of her brother's, no, they would bother her now. When she heard his voice she knew it was someone unknown, and usually that meant trouble, least for her.

She turned her head, looked at him and quirked a brow as if to say 'really? that line?' but she stayed silent. She let her tail sway behind her and looked him up and down.

She had never seen him before.

She was hot, and now annoyed that perhaps some trespasser had come, but, strangely, he looked to fit here.

"Lost, are you?"

It wasn't a female he knew, or even vaguely recognized, he thought, as he came closer and got a better look at her. But at least it wasn't a hostile welcome - for the moment - even though she didn't look all that pleased to see him. He raised a brow at the question, then gave a short laugh.

<"No. Not really,"> he replied, amused. It was familiar enough territory, after all, even if the oases he knew had dried up. Kope was actually surprised at how much he remembered, but perhaps his mother had been right about one thing, at least: this place was in his very blood. His tail-tuft twitched as he regarded the lioness. <"I was here long before your time, sweetheart.">

"Sweetheart?" she said roughly, she raised herself from the sand and turned her body to look at him, eye him once over and blew air from her mouth. "And who do you think you are, hmm?"

She whipped her tail and sneered. Crimson eyes narrowing, a snarl, almost, in her throat.

"If you were here, and left, that means you are unwelcome, or are you truly lost? In more ways than one? What's your name?"

My, she was touchy. He'd have to go careful if he didn't want to start a scrap with her - which he didn't, particularly. He wasn't a fan of fighting with women. It simply wasn't fair to them, although if he was completely honest with himself, he also didn't want to ever lose to one.

"Or maybe I just got bored," He supplied an alternate reasoning, raising a brow at her, then casually taking a seat, not intimidated or apparently offended by her lack of manners. "Name's Kope, son of Kimeti and Karama - brother to Kidondo. I'm sure you've heard of him, at least. Who're you?" He nearly added 'sweetheart' to that, too, but given her attitude, he decided to let it drop at the last second.

"Bored? Really?" Kai said quirking a brow. She looked to the desert, then back to him, stood and walked around him some. His color was fierce, his eyes like opal, and the markings on him were similar to Kidondo but, there was something off.

Kai didn't feel a sense of comfort in Kope's presence as she did with Kidondo, Kidondo knew her and her brother's secret, and that was through trust.

Trust had to be earned.

"So, what? You just though you would, stop by here, see the scenary?" she asked, flicking her tail up under his chin and then pulling away.

He picked the wrong, hot, hot day. She was so thirsty, if he had somehow brought a drink, she would be a bit...happier?

Less tense?

"I know him, I know everyone, but you, you are a secret aren't you?"

She stopped, stood before him, eyes watching intently.

"Kai, I'm Kai."

"More or less," he replied absently, raising a brow at the sudden contact, tilting his white-framed head to follow her movements, his mane shaking slightly at the movement. He was intrigued by her actions, curious despite himself, but he had to laugh - a short, almost rasping sound, at her next words.

"Maaaaybe," he said, drawing out the word in a casual drawl, a grin lifting over his muzzle. If only she knew. "Kai, eh? So where do you fit, in this new scheme of things? I hear my brother's overturned some of the basic ... traditions ... of the pride since I was gone. And I certainly don't remember you. Either I'm getting damned old - " Another flash of white teeth suggested that this was not the case; he was, after all, fairly young still - " ... or you were a rogue at some point."

Kai sneered at him, a small huff escaping the corner of her mouth. Ears flicked forward, listening, and her eyes were intent on his own. He was sly, but not an intellectual, from where she stood. He had brute strength, much like her brother, but he probably had the same fault as Ka - Kope was perhaps a little slow, pace wise and keeping up with her own tricks.

She shook herself, and stretched her limbs, yawning.

"My brothers and I came from the pridelands with a friend, we left our moth-family, behind. We lost our taste for it there, and found a home here."

The sneer wasn't very promising. Damn the woman, didn't she know how to take a joke? Evidently not. He mentally rolled his eyes, but outwardly merely watched her, lifting his lips at the mention of the Pridelands. He'd been there, once - he hadn't been impressed. A bunch of soft-foots, living in lands where all they had to do was walk out of the huge rock they lived in, and an antelope would practically fall into their laps. Hardly a difficult life, and they'd take in practically anyone.

Kope noted that she had been about to say 'mother,' then stopped, and he wondered why that made any difference. Maybe she was just a stickler for accuracy. "'Least you made the right choice - well, up until the damned drought, anyway," he said, conversationally.

"The drought will pass," she hoped, "the sun seems to have exhausted it, for now, but water will come again." She flicked her tail, watched him idly. "For someone, who seems to just be passing through, perhaps," she said with a snap of her tongue, "you seem to know too much, and be too..."

What was the word.

"Comfortable. Do the regents know you are here, Kope?"

She would not let him wander far into the lands of the pride, there were young ones, and she would not put them in harms way.

She'd call for her brother's if she had to.

"Well, I grew up here." He narrowed his eyes a little at her. "I would expect to be comfortable in my homeland. It's not like you're the first one I've met since coming over the border, girl, either, else how would I know about the drought?" Think, woman, he added, a little irritably, but only to himself. "And no, I haven't met up with my esteemed brother yet." Hopefully the older male wouldn't have forgotten what he looked like. What was this, any, twenty questions?

"I take it you're a guard for my brother, Kai? Probably not the best of occupations to have taken," he noted, idly.

"And if I am?" she scowled. "Why is it not the best occupation?" Did he think she could not do her job? She held in a snarl, and wished he would do something to make her test his strength and will. However, this was Kidondo's brother, so she couldn't be too hasty with action.

"What rank would you have chosen if given the chance?"
