It was only a short time after his run in with the stranger who had offered some almost friendly advice about how he ought to behave in the roguelands and Xerxes seemed to be doing his best to ignore it. After a failed attempt to ask her if she had seen Bunikee, he was back to where he had started- walking randomly and grumbling. Things weren't looking very good for Xerxes on his little quest but he was far from giving up. He had to find her eventually.

Grumble grumble.

Having specific instructions to touch absolutely nothing in the den under pain of unspecified torture, Antallian had decided that today would be a good day to practice concealment and traps. Concealment of the den, that is, and checking the few traps he'd laid for unwary small animals. They weren't anything special, some pits and a snare-like twist, but he did have to check them.

Today they'd all been empty, and the white lion was a bit desolate as he trudged back towards home. Not that Spina would be utterly disappointed in him, but she wouldn't be excessively pleased either.

That was when Antallian realized that the soft muttering he'd been listening to wasn't his own. It was just a shade too soft for him to make out any real words. So he looked up. There, as oblivious to his surroundings as Bauble had just been, was a red lion.

"Ah, well, hello there!" the sandy-maned lion called out in surprise.

Unlike the previous encounter, Xerxes was not even a little bit concerned about where he was or what was going on another him- a mistake he would not care to admit to but he didn't seem to handle disappointment well. He nearly jumped out of his fur when suddenly someone called out to him and he stared a moment before he really realized someone was talking to him.

"Hello," he said, not looking particularly pleased but not looking nearly as cranky as he had before. He was rather stunned, though he should not have been. Lions were everywhere.

"I'm looking for someone," he said so suddenly it surprised even himself, but perhaps asking someone else would take away the annoyance at the previous attempt, "Tan lioness with a white mane, she has pink kind of swirly markings on her legs and eyes.."

Well, this was a nice change indeed! Normally it seemed like Bauble had to pry conversation out of some of the people he ran into, but in comparison, this red male was practically garralous!

"Lookin' fer someone, eh? Kin be difficult, out here," the white male replied slowly in contrast to the speed with which the stranger was forcing his words out. Bauble figured that this guy was probably from a pride, just something in his attitude and stance. An paused and considered the description. It sounded very familiar...

"Yer lookin' fer Bunikee, I take it?" Antallian asked at last. She was the only person he knew that fit that particular description, though gods only knew how many others in the Rogue Lands did.

As fast as Xerxes seemed to be going, he wasn't really expecting much to come of this. Then he heard her name and everything seemed to come to a screeching halt as he stared blankly at Antallian for a few very tense seconds. When he did speak again, he was hesitant.

"You.. you know who I'm talking about."

It wasn't really a question, Xerxes didn't suppose Bunikee was a common name for someone fitting that description. He remained tense but suddenly there was hope in his voice and it seemed to completely change him.

"Do you know where she is?" he asked.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 7:51 pm

"Certainly seems that way," Bauble replied languidly. He supposed that while there might be other lionesses in these lands who fit the description, it was highly unlikely that they'd have the same name. Which meant he did indeed know who the red male was talking about.

"A'course I don't know where she is," the white lion told the stranger scornfully. "I could tell you where she was, aye an' maybe the direction she chose, but where that lady is now only the gods could tell you." Silly question really. Antallian supposed he didn't have to take it so literally, but so be it. The stranger could've been a little more reasonable in his request. After all, the white and sand lion was helping him.

A wicked smile lit his brown eyes. It was also possible that the laidback lion just plain liked messing with people every now and then. More than likely even. It was an attitude that Ina couldn't stand, so he could only indulge in it with strangers.

The way Antallian replied mainly confused Xerxes, who was already in a generally confusing state from the way he reacted to finding someone who knew who Buni was. This was not another Outlander, that meant she had been .. somewhere this lion had been, even if that wasn't here. The big thing he learned from what the stranger said was that Bunikee was not here, though the rest of it was a fair distraction from that disappointment.

"A direction is all I need, then," he said, still hesitant but carefully holding back annoyance. He had to be nice now.

A twinkle in Bauble's eyes was the only outward sign that he was truly enjoying the stranger's confusion. In fact...perhaps he should see how far he could push it. The white lion came closer to the red.

"Well an' good, but I'm afraid m'mate would take it ill if'n I jest showed anyone who came along where a friend of ours had gone," Antallian pointed out, only half in jest. "So. I'm Antallian. An' yer name is...?"

If he could be said to "know" the stranger to some degree, they wouldn't then be strangers and then the white lion would happily show the red what he knew about how to find Bunikee. The lioness in question hadn't told Spina or Bauble much about where she came from, but it was a bit suspicious that someone had come searching for her by name.

Be nice, be nice, be nice..

His ears perked up a bit when he called Buni a friend. She was clearly a far better rogue than he was, but she had come out here on her own, not following after someone else so maybe that shouldn't have been so surprising. He wasn't nearly as competitive with Buni as he was with others.. for now. What mattered was finding her.

"I'm not just anyone," he countered, still doing his very best to stay calm now that he was so close to having something to work on and it was only being dangled in front of him, "My name is Xerxes, Buni is a- friend, a friend of mine."
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 8:14 pm

A friend, eh? Antallian had heard that before. Had said that before even. Before he'd finally got up the courage to ask Inatarni to be his mate. When she'd said "yes" it had been the happiest moment of his life...

"Xerxes, nice name," he commented idly, starting to walk again, just fast enough that if the red lion wished to continue talking he'd have to come with. "An' she's a friend o' yers. A special friend?" Bauble asked with a knowing look on his face as he kept walking.

If Buni had kept to the same speed she'd had when Ina ran into her, the two should be reunited in a reasonable amount of time. Or was it the lioness' sense of direction that had slowed her down so...? Whatever, by the time Antallian let Xerxes go, it probably wouldn't be more than a couple days before the red lion found his lady love.

Xerxes had nothing to say to the compliment, he was already trying to contain an alarming muddle of emotions he was experiencing- there was no point worrying about every little detail of the small talk that would lead him to something help.

He was slow on the uptake but he followed after Antallian as he began to walk again.

"You could say that," he said, trying to ignore the expression on Antallian's face and think of something that would give him a satisfactory amount of information so that he would stop dancing around actually helping, "We've known each other since we were small, we come from the same pride."
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 8:27 pm

"Coulda guessed that'n," the white lion replied sardonically. "Neither o' you have the sense the gods gave a kitten fer movin' through these lands." He shook his head. Pride members just confused him. They were soft in so many ways, used to relying on a select few of their number to protect all the rest from the outside world.

Several more lengths were attained in the resulting silence before Antallian tried again.

"So...yer childhood sweetheart or somethin'?" he queried, turning his head slightly to get a look at Xerxes' reaction.

This was getting less and less hopeful all the time, and while Xerxes was getting more and more annoyed.. he had to believe Antallian was just trying to drag this on and tease him before he would finally help. Xerxes had siblings, despite all odds he'd had friends.. he wasn't entirely unfamiliar with the concept. Of course, this was a rogue, he might actually he doing something more suspicious or he might not have any intention of telling Xerxes where Buni went.. or he might have done something to Buni. There were many options and it was only the first impression An had given that let Xerxes believe he hadn't actually met and harmed Bunikee.

He kept up, decidedly following through with whatever would come from now. However, he wasn't entirely thrilled to be talking about his relationship with Buni the way Antallian seemed intent on talking about it. They were far from sweethearts.

"Not exactly," he said, grinding his teeth a bit.
PostPosted: Fri Aug 19, 2011 8:42 pm

It was difficult, but Antallian managed to not only keep from breaking into laughter, but also to keep a mostly straight face. The fact that Xerxes was actually grinding his teeth didn't help the situation there.

"Ah, I see now," the white lion went on, seemingly oblivious to his companion's frustration. "You love her, but she may not wish t'take it to the next level." He paused, considering something else. "She might not even be aware o' yer love, I bet. Must make it hard on you, Red!" If he knew Xerxes slightly better, Antallian might've slapped him on the back at that moment. Lucky Xerxes.

"So she left the pride, an' you followed her all the way out here," Bauble continued talking as he continued walking. "What'll you do once you find her?"

Despite the near-overwhelming urge to turn around, walk away and just not have to deal with this kind of conversation, Xerxes was desperate. Either Buni wasn't quite the same out here or Antallian was really trying to mess with his head by making everything sound all lovey and happy.. but it wasn't exactly like that, no matter if the feelings were there.

So he stayed stubbornly quiet, offering only what words seemed necessary to continue the conversation. He also didn't deny of the things Antallian said, though arguing it never actually occurred to him.

Then came a question he wasn't prepared for in any sense and the realization made him stumble to stop. What was he going to do when he found Buni? "Kill her" seemed a bit dramatic, even in a non-serious, angry-at-someone-you-care-about way.. at the very least, he was going to yell at her. And if she wasn't completely changed by whatever had brought her out here and her time as a rogue, it seemed extremely likely that there would be a fight.

It just didn't seem appropriate to explain that to a stranger, though.

"I don't know."
