Yofiel could not tell if it was hotter in the sun or in the shade anymore. She had stopped to hide under a rock to escape the beating sun, only to find the shade offered little to no relief! Her black paws felt like they were on fire, and with as hot as it was, they were not likely to let up anytime soon. Why did she have to be out in this heat when she was so darkly colored?
Unfortunately for her, the answer was very simply because she was all alone. She was a rogue and had yet to find a place even as a rogue to den up and call her own. She used to love traveling around and doing everything for herself, with the occasional help from Athena when she crossed paths with the fluffy male, but lately it was just irritating to be out on her own.
Between the lack of cubs when she was not in the least inactive and the nice male she met, she was already rethinking the rogue thing. Then something like this had to happen and she had nothing but time to think grumpy thoughts to herself. Being miserable and alone was one thing, being miserable and alone when she knew she could have someone just was torture.

Yofiel stretched a paw to get the toes separate for a moment and put airflow between them. It did not help much but it was enough to make it a little more bearable. She did the same with each of the other paws as well for the same results. That done she flopped herself onto her side and put her head down, hoping the ground here in the shade might help ebb away the heat from her fur. It was a vain hope.
She sighed and just laid there watching the sky for a moment. She blinked as she saw something in the distance that looked promising. There were clouds, dark grey clouds. Yofiel's ears perked up at the sight of those clouds. If those clouds meant rain, she would be so relieved. It was not humid so that rain should bring the temperature down, or so the lioness would figure.
Yofiel would rather be wet and cold than dry and hot. She put her head up to look at the clouds and watch them move. They seemed to be moving at a rather brisk pace, so it might not be a very long rain. The clouds flashed a bit and her ears picked up the distant sound of thunder. If that did not lead to rain, it would be very dangerous. She pulled her paws back under her rock and shuddered. This could be very good or very bad.

Yofiel watched the clouds encroach upon the sky and saw a blur to the ground under them as they came. The wind started blowing and flashes of lightning could be seen in the clouds, the rumbles trailing behind them. The lioness wondered if she was going to be as relieved by the rain as she thought. That storm looked pretty nasty if that wind and lightning was any indication.
The wind was cooling her fur down some, so Yofiel thought this would be a good kind of storm at least. The lioness did think she might need to find a better shelter though. She got up and padded toward some other rocks to search for a safer spot. The rock she had been under was nice for shade, but it was not going to offer much protection from that storm that was getting quite close now.
She looked around at the rocks and found a hole that looked good enough for her to hide in. Heck it looked a lot like it would make a good den. She approached it carefully, since something else could have thought it was a good den/shelter already and not like the idea of sharing. Yofiel stuck her nose in very carefully and sniffed. Nothing. She put her head in part way and found no sign of anything. Smelled and looked abandoned. She slide into the shelter at that.

Yofiel pulled herself into the den completely and laid down by the entry way. The blowing air could still coll her some here, but it should not blow rain in on her too badly, nor should the lightning run a risk of hitting her here. That storm kept sounding nastier as it got closer and the wind kept blowing more forcefully. The lioness certainly doubted it would last very long with how it was acting. Nothing to be too concerned over since it would be gone in the blink of an eye really.
Yofiel's tail twitched at the wind picked up and the rain could now be heard drawing nearer. It was pounding as it came. The downpour steadily moved closer the thunder not nearly as loud with the noise of the rain so close to paw. It sounded horrible and nasty as it got closer, and Yofiel was glad now that she had found this better shelter to wait it out instead of staying out where it had been more open. Hot or not, it was not worth the danger to cool off her paws with the rain.
The lioness gave a heavy sigh as the rain started pounding outside the den she was hiding in. That looked like it would sting if it hit. The little dents it was leaving in the dirt outside the entrance made her wince. Yofiel winced more at the sound of the thunder just overhead. This storm was bad, and hopefully it would be over soon as she expected it would. At least while the rain was pelting down the wind had died down some. That had to be a good sign.

Yofiel watched the rain coming down hard for about half an hour before it finally let up. A light drizzle took it's place for a few minutes and then it finally stopped. When the rain stopped falling, Yofiel peeked her head out of the den she was hiding in. Well everything was wet and for now it was much cooller. She wondered if it would get humid and icky when the sun came back out. She certainly hoped not.
The last thing she needed was to be hot AND wet. She padded out and was grateful that the wind was still going. Ah wonder of wonders, it was nice and cool now. The dark lioness, hopped up on top of one of the damp rocks and laid herself out to enjoy the cool breeze. This was more to her liking, that was for certain. If it stayed like this she was not going to regret being dark colored. That might not be likely, but she could still think it.
Much to the lioness' delight the sun stayed behind clouds for the rest of the day. The wind kept blowing as well, cooling as it went. The rain water stuck around only long enough to keep things chilled. Yofiel was quite pleased with this development and took the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful weather while it lasted. She was sure it would not be there tomorrow to enjoy.
