 The dark coated hyena sighed, looking toward the horizon west, then east, then west again. She supposed it really didn't matter which way she went, one was just as good as another for her. It wasn't like she had any place to really go.
She chided herself mentally, Asali wouldn't like those thoughts. The lioness who had healed her paws and taught her the basics of healing to at least be able to tend to herself while out here, had promised her someday she'd find her place, and a home again.
Kaiya had to believe her..right? If not then the lioness was just a crazy bush doctor that had been kind to her. The only feline..heck the only other animal on the whole savannah who had.
Sighing again, she turned east, after all the sun rose in that direction, so that was good...right?

 Zenobia sat with her back to the rising sun. Her red eyes watched as the landscape slowly spread out before her. Sunlight reaching out in beams touched here and there. The scent of the new day filled her nostrils. She smiled and happened to look to her right. There a dark object moved. Well that was interesting.
Content for a moment to watch as the sunlight continued to spread out and define features, the pale lioness realized that it was indeed an animal. By the way it moved it wasn't feline. Now intruiged Zeno rose to her feet and headed toward the unknown animal Getting closer she realized it to be a hyena. It had been some time since she had encountered them; in fact she wasn't sure how long. Looking around she couldn't see any hyenas that might be with this one.
"Hello there," Zeno called out to be noticed.

Hares in a hand basket! Kaiya nearly jumped out of her fur at the sound of the greeting. She'd not expected anyone to be in the area and she'd not seen the white pelted lioness against the bright sun.
The hyena skittered sideways, and tangled her legs up, tripping over herself to land in the dirt, tail up, face down. Oh..poop.. she though silently as she looked over to the feline who had said hello and gave a slightly sheepish smile to.
" Uh..hi.."
So much for first impressions!

"Oh my. Please forgive me for startling you." Oh she hadn't meant to startle the hyena. Zeno did her best not to giggle. The pale lioness gave the hyena an encouraging smile. "Good morning to you." She sat down so the hyena didn't feel as though Zeno was standing over her.

Kaiya wiggled, managing to get her rump back down in the dirt where it belonged and not pointing to the sky. Doing a half push up she blew her mane out of her eyes and gathered her hind end under her trying not to look to much more like a clown then she already had.
" No no, its fine," she reassured the pretty..ok stunning.. feline, " I am usually like this. Really. The dirt and I are good friends. I end up face first in it all the time."
Kaiya gave the white lioness another shaky look, " Good morning Ma'am." She may not have known a mother and father or a pack didn't mean she didn't have manners. She did have them...well a few anyway.

Zenobia giggled and ducked her head. "At least you know you have a good friend who will always catch you." She hoped that the sweet hyena didn't hurt herself with all the falls it sounded like she did. Her head gave a fast shake and she laughed. "Oh no. I'm old, but I'm not that old! Zenobia will do just fine." Her tail wrapped around her back leg.
"How are you doing this morning....?" Zeno left the question hanging as she tried to find out the hyena's name. If she didn't want to say that would be fine and she wouldn't press.

"Oh I wouldn't call it a good friend, it usually hurts like all get out when I fall on it." The female hyena stood up, glancing over at the much larger lioness, " Though sometimes, when it rains, it is squishy. Then its not so bad."
She took a few steps back and shook to rid herself of any lingering dirt, not wanting to get the pretty white pelt dirty. Black showed the dirt much less, "Oh, sorry Ma'am..uh no Zenobia. Didn't mean to offend. One of the hares that found me as a pup always told me to call every female Ma'am and ever male Sir."
Kaiya titled her head to the side, " My morning has been fairly good Ma'a...I mean Zenobia. I didn't get chased out of the cubby hole I found to sleep in and so far nothing has tried to eat me. I might get a meal today sometime. So it should be a good morning and a good day...the name is Kaiya. Pleased to meet you."

"Ah. Maybe not suck a good friend them." She paused a little awkwardly. Zeno didn't want the hyena to feel embarrassed. "Mud has it uses, but a soft landing is one I never considered." She made it sounded amusing. Not that she was a vain lioness, but sometimes she did like her coat clean. Now one thing she didn't like was rain. That was miserable stuff.
Zeno blinked in surprised. "Hares? Oh my, that is interesting. I've never heard of them doing that. No offense taken." It seemed at odds for something that a hare would do. Still had seen some lions with hare familiars, but it still appeared weird to her to travel with something that could be considered food. Maybe it was different raising a young cub or pup.
She waved a paw. "If that was the way your were brought up, then by all means us it." She smiled. "I'm glad you've had a good day Kaiya. Would you like to team up with me and see if we can't pull something down for both of us?"

Kaiya gave her ear a good scratch with her hind leg while she still stood on all fours, " The hares only kept me for a little while. Hard to explain to the neighbors why you raising something that may eat them all later. I had to leave once I got strong enough to walk again. Was alone for awhile, till a hawk thought I looked tasty...almost was his meal...but a old Springbok chased him off, stayed with her, protected her till she died..." her voice trailed off and she got a distant look for a moment before she shook it off and gave the lioness a bright smile.
" Bah, you don't need to hear about my whole puphood, I say we find that chow you were thinking about. I am great at flushing game to waiting paws and even better at eating what you don't want after you've had your fill." Her tail wagged back and forth happily.

The lioness gave a soft chuckle. She could very well imagine the neighbors having issues. At least they had given Kaiya a fighting chance. Zeno nodded when she mentioned the hawk. They would take whatever they could carry away. "That was kind of you," she murmured. Return for a life saved.
"If you need to talk, I don't mind listening." She smiled encouragingly. While she wasn't in a hurry to do much, it appeared her new friend was eager to hunt. Zeno stood up and laughed. "Oh no, we hunt together we eat together. There's no reason for you to wait; I'm sure we can get enough for both of us." The lioness decided she liked this friendly hyena.

Kaiya looked at the white lioness like she'd just been hit in the face with a fish, " Really? You'd let me eat with you?" Her tail double timed it. " Only Asali ever let me eat with her, well...yeah..only her. Everyone else lets me help and if I am lucky keeps their promise to give me the left overs."
Kaiya couldn't believe what she was hearing, this..this..goddess was going to let her eat with her! East had been the right choice for her paws!
" Lead on, I am right behind ya!"

Zenobia was worried she'd offended the hyena by the look on her face. She was quickly absolved of that notion. A pleased purr escaped her. "Yes Kaiya." She had no idea who Asali was, but she was very happy by Kaiya's reaction. "You're going to help hunt, I don't see why you can't eat with me." Determined now to find something to make this worthwhile, Zenobia headed out. She glanced over her shoulder to grin at Kaiya.
