SCENARIO
Yue Lao's attempts at finding a new hobby seem to culminate in a fight with Bataar more often than she actually enjoys said "hobbies," and beetle-fighting is no different.

Legion win.

These conflicts were seemingly without end. Yue Lao found herself, once again, ready to face off against Bataar. This time, it was over beetles. Or so Yue thought. What had really triggered the fight was her accusation that Bataar couldn't read. Yue was only joking; her mother hadn't been able to read until Yowai taught her, and she had only learned because of Yowai as well. Why would Yue judge him for something which was not entirely his fault? More likely she would bully him into reading sessions with her mothers and herself. They'd teach him to read in no time. She could even smack him every time he got a letter wrong, though that might just teach him that all reading is equivalent to pain.

Regardless of what she would do if given a chance, Yue Lao found herself dodging a rather emphatic fist as it flew towards her. She had gotten pretty accustomed to these sudden strikes at her face, so dodging them became second nature. It was only after the intial strike was thrown that she had to concentrate on staying out of his way. She suspected the longer the battles lasted, the more difficult that would be. Yue Lao mumbled, "Watch you don't crush your beetle," and pointed to where it was meandering around his footwork. Why had he set it down so close to where he was going to fight...? And the dirt ring beneath them had become completely scuffed away in Yue's dodge attempt. She had worked hard on that ring!

Without thinking, she did something rather childish: she picked up one of the stray smooth pieces of wood which had outlined the ring, and threw it at Bataar. It wasn't exactly large or heavy, so what she expected to accomplish was likely beyond anyone. She did not have her meteor hammer. Hime-san had started to partake in the battle again, hurling harmless tufts of ripped grass in Bataar's direction, chittering madly, until he grew bored of that and retreated to sit on Yue's shoulder.

If Bataar could just express himself better, Yue would likely not get so mad at him.

Bataar was almost certain that Yue Lao knew by now about his inability to read. There was no way in hell she'd be making all those comments if she didn't. His antagonistic glare was enough to communicate that she'd done something gravely wrong to him in commenting about his illiteracy, and he was ready to beat her out in a fight. He had no idea that she didn't know, nor that she didn't care about his not knowing how to read and had instead been quite mortified at the mention of it-- and no one mortified Bataar and got away with it(or so he'd like to think)! In any case, he was prepared to fight.

The captain bowed down to rescue his beetle at the mention of it, however, and put it a bit further away. There was no telling what angst he might have to deal with if he accidentally killed it. He would've given it a kiss, except for the fact that he knew he'd started a fight he couldn't escape by now. It was always a punch in the face, and it was almost always dodged, too-- that was frustrating, but at least he could remember the good times when he'd actually managed to land hits upon other Lunarians. The man straightened up to face Yue Lao and gaped as he saw that a piece of wood was flying in the general direction of his face.

It hit its target and he found himself sputtering, merely happy he hadn't gotten any splinters on his tongue. "You won't get away with that alive!" he declared, picking up the wood and launching it back at his enemy. Of course, she would certainly escape this fight of theirs alive-- they were always both in one piece once they managed to escape the constraints of their battles, after all. That was just how their fights always tended to play out.

Watching Bataar with the beetle struck Yue Lao as odd, yet again. Bataar had other facets to him she had not even suspected, which made her disappointed in herself. She didn't know he could be so kind to anything. He certainly hadn't been abundandtly gentle with her, not that she had deserved such treatment. Yue Lao scuffed her bare heel against the ground and looked up at the sky, before looking back down at Bataar with his beetle, waiting for him to finish caring for the insect.

It wasn't that Bataar hadn't hit her before; he'd landed quite a few blows, she just couldn't afford to take the full brunt of them, and was typically fast enough to avoid the worst of it. The ones he had landed hurt like hell, though, and she didn't like repeating the situation. Despite that, she had somehow ended up in a fight with him again. Yue had to resort to stupid tactics like throwing things at the hulking Lunarian; he wouldn't stop complaining if she used her real weapon, even if she could alter its form to be less stabby.

"I'm pretty sure I will, bugbear! You'd have to catch me to kill me," Yue retorted. Yue threw her arms up and covered her face as he hit her with the same piece of wood. She complained at the sting, and rubbed the red area on her forearm where the wood had connected, but it was, after all, just a piece of smooth wood.

Yue and Bataar had a strange way of fighting. It was more insults than anything else, as once they got into a fight, neither of them seemed very eager to get close enough to try and hit one another. Yue did not want to fight him melee, and even if he chased after her, she would likely just run.

Bataar was an affectionate creature at heart. He was the ideal fluffy children's toy, in fact, except for the fact that his entire body was hardened with muscle and he killed people on a regular basis. Without his rats, beetles were the only thing he could really protect, care for, and enjoy outside of interaction with other Lunarians, most of whom he tended to fight with. He told the beetle quite firmly to stay put before turning back to Yue Lao, his teeth bared(might as well take on a scary expression, right?).

Bat looked a little more pleased with himself as he noted the wood connecting with Yue Lao's arm and smirked, a glint of pride showing through in his green eyes. As long as he got in a hit or two, he was honestly pleased with battles like this. It didn't bother him very much when he lost or even when he ended up with a draw. It simply pleased him that his victims might have a bruise or a welt to remember him by. That sort of thing was meaningful. No matter what, damage was damage.

He snorted at Yue's comment about catching her. "Yeah, right. If you want to run away, it's your loss." the captain declared, although the truth was that he wasn't much on running. In obtaining his size he had compromised in the area of speed and agility. He was, indeed, the king of melee and close combat in general. That suited Bat best.

Insults, as irrelevant as they were, seemed to work out fairly well for Bataar and Yue Lao. "You're like a strange little creature with all that running and what-not. You need to learn to fight for real!" he declared, although he really wouldn't want her taking out her meteor hammer. He would be pretty pissed off if that thing dented his awesome sword.

Bataar deserved his rats, and Yue would have actually helped rescue them if she knew. As far as a children's toy went, she would never picture Bataar that way, except for the way in which he cared for the beetles. It looked like there was a completely tender side to Bataar. Yue Lao did not really have that equivalent. She couldn't remember the last time she had been tender with anything. The only one she was affectionate with was Jianyu-- well, she was also fairly affectionate with Sara, but that was because Sara meant a lot to her, and she was Yue Lao's dearest friend apart from her fiance. Not to mention Sara could tame Hime-san. Yue Lao tried to picture Hime-san, Bataar and Sara in the same space, and nearly burst into laughter. So as Bataar turned to Yue with his teeth bared, her expression was more like barely concealed laughter.

Struck speechless more from irritation than anything else, Yue didn't like the smug look that seemed to be creeping onto his face. She picked up a discarded cord which had been piled next to one of the merchant's booths and held it as though she cradled her meteor hammer. It had no points to it, except for the end of one side had been burned clean, so it wasn't really about to do much damage. All the same, she was sick of not being able to fight with her normal techniques. "I'm not about to run from you, bugbear," she replied, tightening her grip on the rope and then spinning the long side, giving it momentum.

"I can fight better than 'real,' I'm formidable; you just whine whenever you see my weapon," Yue retorted, her voice raising slightly. Something about Bataar: he had this innate ability to drive her insane for very short but sudden periods of time.

She let the long end of the rope lash down against Bataar's head and shoulders, whipping it back to her and throwing it forward each time to lash a new mark. It was not a long and stinging blow. More like many small bites.

Once he'd straightened up from taking care of his beetle, he couldn't help but notice the look of evident amusement on Yue Lao's face. He didn't like the look, and a lot of the reason was because he, Bataar Jaoret, was about to kick her a** and that just tended not to be very funny at all(overconfident, much?). Besides, if he was going to put this much effort into making a scary face, he figured that she might as well be scared for her life. That was just how these things were supposed to work-- there was no denying it

But, all bragging aside, he really would not rather not get hit by Yue Lao's makeshift whip. He stared at the thing with a look of irritation spreading across his face and back up a little, his green eyes narrowing. "Then use your fists!" he shouted, continuing to back away. Any sort of distance-fighting was not his forte, and he'd found that the bow and arrows he'd used as a fighter were far better for hunting as opposed to fighting. With his muscles, it benefited him a whole lot more when he got into the thick of things.

He snorted a bit imperiously at her comment as to his whining. He did not whine. That wasn't manly behavior, for one. "Your weapon is for sissies. You should take it like a real man and deal with my damned punches!" Not that he was saying Yue was a man, or anything-- just that manliness was the sort of thing that everyone ought to aspire to, regardless of gender. It was a brilliant philosophy as far as the Mongol was concerned, and one that he was planning on sticking to.

Bat gritted his teeth as the rope hit him and decided that now was probably the best chance he had at running forward, regardless of dealing with the small hits. He advanced closer and closer until he was within less than an arm's length of the fighter and, from there, aimed a punch straight at her abdomen. That was how it was done.

There was very little which anyone could do to scare Yue Lao. The exception would be threatening Jianyu's life, or Sara's, now. In fact, without meaning to, Yue had let many Lunarians into her heart. What had happened to change her? Perhaps it was merely the natural process of growing up. In any case, as large and muscular as Bataar may be, she didn't intend to ever let him catch her, which meant that he wasn't very frightening. Especially when his expressions usually seemed so ambiguous to Yue Lao. She stretched and her eyes narrowed slightly, in amusement, to the half-shut look she'd had so often as a student.

"I don't fight with my fists, bugbear. We don't all have such straightforward styles," she said. In fact, when she had been a melee fighter, the closest she got to fistfights were her tekko blows. It was far more likely she'd go for well-aimed palm strikes, however, using her bone-breaking style of fighting. Yue tore her opponents up from the inside out, previously. Now she was just altogether upsetting, with a weapon which was both melee and ranged, defensive and offensive. It was as flexible as Yue was, and suited her needs perfectly in this way.

Except apparently it wasn't flexible enough to fight Bataar, as he kept complaining about it. She longed for the days of pounding people in with her fists, but Bataar was hardly as young as Kiran had been when she fought him out of blind rage in the dark and the rain.

Bataar seemed vastly concerned with his manliness. "Perhaps you should take it like a real captain and strategize around your weaknesses," Yue Lao retorted, "instead of complaining when my style happens to leave yours at a disadvantage." And vice versa, Yue Lao thought. She would not envy Bataar, if their roles were reversed. Combat with the temple guardian had been miserable, and she imagined it would be something similar to try and fight something she couldn't catch.

For some reason, it didn't even occur to her that she should be upset he referred to her as a man. Or something. She didn't even think twice about it. Yue cursed under her breath as Bataar advanced despite the rope; it was a pathetic substitute for her old meteor hammer. She didn't stand still as he swung at her, but she did not react properly: when she fought with her real meteor hammer, she would bring up the shorter end ofthe cord and use its weight to defend against such punches. This time, moving instinctively, she found out she had used a piece of rope to try to block the blow.

This resulted in a quite effective punch to the gut, which made Yue first splutter with pain, gasp for air, and then lash out at Bataar's stomach with a fierce kick before rolling to the side to try to avoid any further blows.

Bataar was used to scaring the vast majority of Lunarians he tended to meet, and it was actually faintly refreshing to come across someone so willing to stand their ground. Packing on so much muscle was intimidating to most who didn’t seem to be aware that he wasn’t going to attempt to squash them as if they were bugs. Generally, Bat wasn’t about to melee fight unless the person he was fighting could plausibly return the favor. It just wasn’t fun beating people into the ground like that. Presumably, the man needed something that was going to hold his interest, and a dead and/or unconscious Lunarian wasn’t going to do the job.

All the same, he’d do his best to act as if not being able to fistfight was a travesty of epic proportions. ”Weaklings.” he huffed, crossing his arms and attempting to look as formidable as humanly possible. He knew he could be a bit of a whiner during battles, but seriously, having a spiky ball flying towards his face was hardly his idea of a fun time. He’d prefer not to have to deal with Yue Lao’s fighting style if he could help it. Her next comment, however, peeved him immensely.

He wasn’t acting like a real captain? ”Oh, you’ll see!” the man declared, looking extremely pleased with himself as his punch landed in just the right spot. He could almost feel how very sweet the victory was until Yue Lao managed to get in a fairly effective kick, nicking him in the shin. The man grimaced, hoping the bone hadn’t been fractured. Bat wasn’t sure how he’d handle it if Yue Lao managed to do any real damage, after all. He probably should have been more concerned on a daily basis with the fights he took on, in any case. Small fractures and bruises tended to add up.

It was true, Yue Lao's weapon wasn't exactly fun. It was a lot more fun to spar hand-to-hand, because it tended to last longer, and Yue did love physical contact. When she was younger, all her contact had been deriven from fighting. She wasn't particularly affectionate with her family, nor with her friends. She had been learning, more and more, and had even hugged Kiran a couple times. It was strange that she could feel affection for one Lunarian, though, and stranger she was fine displaying it. Regardless, that was why she had taken to hand-to-hand combat so quickly in her younger years. What had persuaded her to change was the evident weakness of it, however. She had failed to protect Jianyu from a distance, and as such, needed to compensate for her weakness. Even Bataar had a sword with him; no one at his or her rank could consider fighting barefisted their only strength.

Perhaps Sakn would. Yue Lao wasn't sure what her half-brother would develop, if anything. He had always preferred to fight with his bare fists. Yue snorted aloud as Bataar accused them of being weaklings. Yue mirrored his gesture briefly and crossed her own arms across her chest before returning to a vaguely offensive stance in preparation of what would happen next.

The blow didn't hit his stomach, but rather his shin. Yue felt the hit connect, relishing the blow. She wasn't sure how solid it had been; Bataar was hard to gauge. Not only was he not the type to express pain outright, apparently, but he also had a rather particular frame and build which made it hard to know if she had hit her mark. With slighter opponents, she felt the hit reverbrate through her own bones and knew its weaknesses. Yue Lao recovered, and quickly aimed for the same spot: if it had caused a weakness at all, hopefully it would be damaging enough that they could call it quits for the day. "I'd rather just get something to eat," she muttered under her breath.

Bataar liked to consider the idea that his sword was for mere decapitation, but in the midst of a true battle or skirmish in which he was leading his company of men the weapon was always out, always dealing out blows. Fist fights were definitely not an option when it came to leading his men into battle, as unfortunate as that might have been. It would certainly have done well if he’d been able to settle things over a simple fist-fight with a few of the Legionnaire captains-- if fighting weaponless was an option, which it usually wasn’t, the Noble much preferred it.

Having decided that he was fairly unconcerned with his shin for the time being, the man had decided to scope out his opponent, maybe in order to land a well-placed punch to the face or some such thing. It was distracting, however, to go over the immense possibilities in his head and he soon found that he wasn’t actually paying too much attention to Yue Lao herself. Therefore, her next kick came as a surprise. The pain this time around was enough to tell him that he had probably better get his a** to a healer before trying any other sorts of fights. Two well-placed kicks in the same area could, after all, do some decent damage.

The man gritted his teeth and huffed, his fists loosening as he turned his back obstinately to Yue Lao in order to march over to his beetle and scoop it up. ”Yes, well, come and see me when you’re ready to have a real/i] fistfight!” he declared, unwilling to recognize the fact that he’d clearly just lost the fight. His shin was hurting too much for him to care, and at this point all that really mattered was masking any sort of a limp. Well, at least he was convinced that his beetle had won, even if he did feel sorry for the creature. That was enough to enable some form of optimism as he marched off, his leg a little worse for wear.

A win would have to wait until some other day.
