It was a rare moment that Sam was able to get a whole day to himself with his dad. Robert Colt was usually just as busy as his wife, always having to go to meeting and going through papers. Lawyers were busy people, Sam knew that but he was more than happy when his father promised to take him back to school shopping. Despite Delia Colt’s desires, Sam was growing up and already at an age where shopping with his mother was little embarrassing. Being out with his dad though? Amazing! They could be manly men, together, doing manly things, like buying pencils and getting hamburgers and whatever else manly men do when bonding.

The pair of Colt men had already done some of Sam’s back to school clothes shopping. That consisted of just picking out a few new t shirts and lots of socks. Now Sam and Rob Colt were looking at school supplies. Currently they were trying to decide which pens and pencils were cooler.

“Ninjas like black. I think plain black ones will do Sammo.” Robert Colt was a practical person, and in his head, plain pens were better than fancy ones because Sam was bound to loose a few pens over the semester. "Look, they come in a box! You can get 20 for the same cost of those ones."

“But! Robots! Come on, these ones have robots on them!”

They were completely self absorbed in their conversation to notice anyone around them.

With school quickly approaching, Ainsley had hounded her sister Bell to take her out shopping before all the good stuff was taken by Back-to-School sales. Did the child really care all that much about those sparkle pencils and fluffy binders? Well, maybe a little but that was just a bonus. What the child really had wanted out of this mall adventure was to actually go through the process of Back-to-School shopping since she'd never been able to do it before.

They had gone through nearly every store in the mall thanks to Ainsley's begging curiosity but the child wouldn't be satisfied until she made sure there was nothing they missed and that meant having to thoroughly check every store! This lead the two of them to a larger chain store and when Bell disappeared into the Girl's clothing section, Ainsley followed in behind her until she hide between the clothing racks with a giggle. Bell didn't find her though and soon Ainsley got bored of it, crawling out and skipping down the hall, completely in the opposite direction, towards the school supplies.

The girl had expected to find pens and pencils lining the display, and she did, but that wasn't what she noticed first. Instead she noticed a taller version of Sam standing in the aisle... and Sam. What were they doing here? It was obvious and soon the girl giggled, promptly picking up a set of pencils that had Disney princesses on them and bounding towards the two. She didn't waste time pushing her way into their conversation about pencils.

"What about these Sam?" Surprise! Ainsley's here and she's got the solution to your problem! She was holding up the princess pencils to him, her arm waving back and forth in slow enough motion that he could clearly see that they were Disney Princess pencils and that she had the bracelet he made and left in her mailbox on her wrist.

In the middle of his conversation with his dad , robots are always best, Sam’s train of thought was interrupted. First he saw the flash of pink, and the familiar forms of the Disney princesses. Not that Sam was really a big fan of Disney Princesses, but he knew who they were and saw their faces all over. Of course, he had seen most of the Disney movies by now, but he would never call himself a huge fan of Ariel or Aurora.

What really caught his attention was the familiar shape and color of the bracelet he had made for Ainsley. It was attached to the wrist of its intended weared. Awesome! She got it and was wearing it! Sam grinned wide at seeing that; she must have liked it. But before Sam could say anything about that, or even about the princesses, his dad cut in.

“Oh, hello. Sam who’s this?” Robert Colt had never met Ainsley before, he had heard about her from Sam’s mother, but rather than make an assumption he asked.

“Huh. Oh. Dad, this is Ainsley. “ Sam figured that was enough of an explanation.

“Well, nice to meet you little lady. I think Princesses are better for you, maybe not Sam.” Rather than argue about it, Robert simply picked up the robot pens that Sam was holding and tossed them into the basket. “Say, where’s your mom?” The grown up was oblivious to the fact that Ainsley’s guardian was her sister. Likely he had been told this before, but had forgotten.

Sam made a face at his father, silently telling him that wasn’t the best question to ask.

Ainsley made a curtsy to Sam's father when Sam introduced him, carefully hugging the pencils to her chest so she could show Bell later. She wouldn't deny that she wasn't a little bit disappointed that they weren't the kind of pencils Sam would use but that was okay because Sam couldn't have them anyways! They were going to be hers! Although, she might have been willing to share them with Sam...

"It's nice to meet you, sir," she replied to Sam's father with a small smile.

Oh. There was a small pause when Sam's father had asked Ainsley about her mother, her foot doing enough speaking for her as it fell forward on the doe of her shoe and then back as it dug into the floor below her. "California," she replied to Sam's father. "Perhaps in Milan, or maybe Provence since it is the summer..." In other words, Ainsley didn't know where her mother was but she wasn't here with her in Destiny City.

“Oh. … oh.” Robert repeated, taking in the full meaning of what the little girl said. If he was half as soft of as his wife, the man would have an epic sad face. Instead he turned to his son with a ‘I don’t know what to say, so I won’t say anything’ look.

Sam looped an arm around Ainsley’s shoulder, pushing her into his own shoulder in a fairly chummy half-hug. “Sokay, Dad. Cause Ainsley gets to hang around with me. And her sister I guess.”

“Sister? Oh, is she shopping with you? Getting ready for school?” Sam’s dad looked around , keeping an eye out for a distraught older clone of the blonde. But he didn’t see anyone in sight.

Sam's arm had looped around Ainsley's shoulder in a half-hug, a full invitation to the girl to return it in a full-hug. She'd practically attached herself to him, both of her arms swinging around him to latch onto him. Her hands pressed into his back, and her face nuzzled against her friend's chest as she looked to Sam's father. There was a smile on her face, possibly a little unexpected for the parent. Her mother was just busy, that's all, and would come see her when she had time but for now she had all she could possibly need, right?

"That's right!" She giggled.

Her grip on Sam loosened a little, and her head turned around to glance to the distance further back that was otherwise described as the Girl's Clothing section. Her sister was probably over there looking for underwear and stuff that Ainsley had little interest in.

"My sister is... over there," she said with a small flick of the wrist. At least, she thinks her sister is over there. It was where she left her, after all.

When Ainsley latched onto Sam, he stiffened up and stood rigid like a board with still on arm looped around the girl. He hadn’t expected a whole hug. One hand just lightly patted her shoulder while a slight pink tinge showed on his cheeks. Sam let go when Ainsley turned, but didn’t bother to step back really. Being close was, oddly nice.

Sam’s father just smiled, trying not to laugh at the pair of kids. So that’s what his wife was going on about when she mentioned their son’s cute little friend. When Ainsley gestured towards the women’s clothing area and the tall, fully grown Colt man saw a few displays of underwear and other womanly items his face fell a little flat. He was definitely not going to go over there to introduce himself. It was like a forbidden zone, and not one he really wanted to bring Sam into at his age. “Well… uh… Do you want to shop with us for a little while? Still need to get some other school supplies. “

Ainsley had never really been shopping with a man before, not even when she was staying in New York so briefly with her father, so when Sam's father invited her to tag along with them she was more than a little happy to accept. She wondered if they shopped differently from girls, and almost began thinking of it like she would study animal behaviour. If anything, it would be fun to be able to shop with Sam, slowly letting her hands fall to her sides so she was no longer hugging him to death.

"I would be honoured to join you, thank you," she said, smiling to Sam.

Sam smiled back, and loosely linked arms with the girl-who-was-his-friend. He didn’t really say anything, just patiently waited for some kind of direction.

Directions were provided by Sam’s father, who pulled out a shopping list from his pocket. Robert scanned the list and double checked the contents of the basket he was holding. Pens, pencils, paper; all those things were present. “Ah, a binder. Guess it might be time for a new backpack as well. Anything you might be needing Ainsley?”

The tall man gently ushered the two kids out of the aisle. Sam peered around the corner into the next and spotted the binders. Pulling Ainsley along with him he wandered up to the binders and pulled out a plain boring old black fabric zip-up binder. “Whatcha think?”

Ainsley didn't say anything, but she quietly followed Sam through his linked arm and his father who guided them toward the binders.

It was obvious how she felt about the binder by the look on her face. It was probably very similiar to the expression a wife had when a husband picked out some really tacky suit for a dinner party. Except black wasn't tacky, and it was really nice but Ainsley thought Sam could do better than something so plain! She picked up another binder from the pile and held it up to him. It was green and blue striped with white stripes between them. It was much more colourful and to top it all off it had simple floral shapes on it.

It could have been worse Sam, there was a Disney princess binder in another pile behind this one.

"This one has stripes!"

Sam’s face made an equally sour expression at the binder that Ainsley had pulled out. Not that there was anything really wrong with it. The stripes were nice, and Sam appreciated the colors of it. It was those flowers that put the boy off. They just screamed Hawaiian surfer boy or girl. That just wasn’t really Sam. He was the type to appreciate more somber designs, geometric shapes and patterns rather than floral patterns. Oh and flames, but what young male didn’t romanticize fire? Sam put the binder that he had picked up and put back on the shelf from where it came.

“ Stripes are okay but I don’t know about that one. It’d pretty… flowery.” But that the point wasn’t it? Sam picked up another plain looking binder, this time in a earthy brown tone and a deep wine colored band running across it. “What about this one?”

Robert Colt just stood back, watching the two kid, simply amused by their actions.

So stripes were okay but the flowers were not? Ainsley certainly didn't see the logic in that choice but the response Sam gave her, a.k.a. the earth tone binder with the deep wine band running across it, she thought it was a nice compromise from what he had picked before. It wasn't too plain, and it had a nice red colour over the front of it!

"It's a compromise," she announced. "I like it!"

She smiled at Sam as an idea dangled itself across her mind. The idea didn't take long to set aflame within her as she found herself digging deeply into the stack of binders. There had to be one in there somewhere, somewhere... ah ha! Ainsley had finally found one that met the criteria and pulled it out to hold up to Sam. Her face was proud and in her hands was a bright blue binder with a bright green stripe going across it.

"We can match!"

Brown eyes watched curiously as Ainsley dug around. Sam was looking pretty smug that Ainsley had accepted his second choice, like it needed the seal of approval. He quickly turned back and tossed the binder at his dad and the shopping basket. When he turned back around he was met with Ainsley and her binder of choice in his face. It was the same style as the one he picked, just a different style. Sam gave a little smile at that and nodded his approval of the choice. “Cool.”

Robert Colt on the other hand, found the his and her binders absolutely hilarious. It was just so cute! They were like an old married couple, in miniature format. The man literally laughed out loud, enough so to gain the attention of a few random shoppers. Sam had to turn around and glare at his father before the man stifled his amusement.

“Time for backpacks!” Sam announced. He lead the way again, glancing over his shoulder occasionally to make sure that his dad was behaving himself. Rather than face the same mistake as last time, Sam found a nice deep red backpack. It was also pretty plain, and unlike a lot of the once around it, it didn’t feature any princesses or Transformers. “This okay, right?”
PostPosted: Sun Oct 02, 2011 2:44 pm

He liked her idea! How absolutely delightful. If Ainsley could shine like the sun in the sky then her smile would be most definitely be the moon, reflecting her sheer happiness right at Sam. She hugged the binder to her chest to make sure there was no possible way that she would lose it and then she nodded to Sam, following his lead as he led her toward the section with the backpacks.

Ainsley was surprised to see his selection when there were so many awesome bags but she tried not to frown. The result of it was a rather strange looking expression which she could not hold and that soon lead to laughter as she buried her hands into the pile of bags in search of her own. The tips of her fingers traced the sides of a Disney Princess bag, lingering on it before regrettably dragging them away. She had forgotten in the excitement but she already a Disney Princess bag, and also had a backpack at home that was in good condition.

"You like red?" She questioned with a smile, followed by a small and light laughter from earlier. "It suits you!"

There was a pause, and then she folded her hands back over the binder.

"I already have a backpack at home." It was possibly from one of those "child care packages" sent to her by her mother.

The fact that Ainsley didn’t frown and later said that red suited him, pleased Sam. That was all he needed to confirm that his choice was a good one, whether Ainsley really agreed or not. “Red’s nice. Blue is nice too though.” Sam reaffirmed that Ainsley’s own choices were still valid.

Though Sam pulled a bit of a face when she fished out a princess bag. Sam was all too familiar with the one that she already had. “Yeah, I think you only need one of those.” Two Disney princess bags would be more pink then he thought he could handle sanely.
