Tsukiko Airi led a rather normal childhood in the land of the Moon. One of her parents was a merchant guard and a good one too, but never good enough to be hired by the more dangerous merchants and potentially leave his daughter fatherless and his wife husband-less. Tsukiko’s mother was a midwife and helped in their small village, which only seldom had a medical shinobi. This was not trajic, however. Their village was small enough that they rarely even needed major medical attention. When there were those times, the Village Hidden under the Moon was only a day’s ride away. The strangest thing in the village was actually Tsukiko herself. Her father was blonde and her mother a brunette, yet she was born with white hair. However, she did not burp fire or shoot spikes from her hands, so no one really saw her as a concern. She grew up not very interested in fighting or in becoming a midwife. Mostly, she just wandered around and explored. And that was Tsukiko’s childhood. Her childhood ended at the age of 7.
A man came to their small village one day saying he was the mouthpiece of the One True God (and he was always to be referred to as that, not just 'god’ or ‘the one’). He was in his early sixties, but looked to be in his forties. He was from the mainland, a rouge shinobi from the Village Hidden in the Rain and wanted for many different crimes. A warrant had been put out that any law enforcement from any nation could kill him, as long as the corpse was brought back to the Village. However, not being on the mainland or even in Getsukagure, no one had any idea of this. While there were many level-headed people in her village, half of the population had been converted by this man, Ghetsis. Tsukiko made an observation after the first week he had been there; No one actually believed his rot, but if they ever went into his forest chapel (as the One True God was not to be taught around the sins and stigma of men) they always came back ardent followers. At the ripe old age of 7, she just chalked it up to Ghetsis being a truly convincing speaker. Those who did not go originally went either from peer pressure or to indulge the foolishness of their friends or family who went. Within three weeks, half the village was converted, and half wanted Ghetsis run out of town. They saw something wrong with those chapel meetings, something that went right over Tsukiko’s head. Tsukiko never heard what it was. Her parents were in the first group that went and never allowed her to see or talk to the non-believers. She never actually went to any of the meetings because Ghetsis said he needed only convert ‘those that have need to repent, and children were pure and innocent in the eyes of the One True God.’ After he had established a firm hold in the village, he began talking about a messiah, an empty vessel in which the One True God could imbue part of his essence to spread his word. That was what the children were for. Ghetsis told his followers that he would need to perform tests every child, one at a time, alone at the forest chapel, to see if they were truly pure enough to be the vessel.
What happened was he would spend a few hours with a child, male or female, alone and then bring back the child, crying and bruised, saying that he was not pure enough and would only taint the One True God’s spirit. If he or she was attractive or accepting enough, Ghetsis said that he or she might be the one to facilitate his spirit and that he would need to run a few more tests, usually over the course of two or three additional days. They always ended up failing, however.
What Ghetsis didn’t know, or any other ‘saved souls’ for that matter, was that the fastest man in the village traveled to Getsukagure as soon as he saw the first child come out of the forest. It was two weeks before he returned. Apparently, the Village Hidden under the Moon stated that they could not denounce a religion and take military action because of one child. That man preserved. Finally, the news that Ghetsis was seen taking a boat to the Land of the Moon had reached the Village (over a month late now). The Village leader immediately believed the man now and sent a squad with the man to stop Ghetsis. Being shinobi, they raced ahead and got to the village before the day was done. They were told by the ‘sinners’ where Ghetsis’ chapel was in the forest. When they found him, he was in the middle of ‘testing’ Tsukiko for her ‘pureness.’ Ghetsis was a strong ninja, much stronger than the squad had thought. Using a raiton technique, he horribly injured one of them. The leader and Ghetsis then engaged in a one-on-one fight while the 3rd member of the squad tried to save the injured shinobi. It was she, not the powerful ninja fighting off Ghetsis, that took Tsukiko’s attention. Like her, this medical shinobi had white hair. Her hands glowed silver as they went over the ninja’s body. Tsukiko could see, plain as day, that this man was dead. Soon enough, so did the medic. She roared in anger and pain. Her entire body was alive in silver chakra. A huge wave, both light and dark, shot out from around her (Tsukikage Nami). Tsukiko was blinded by it. When she could see again, she saw that her body was healed and she felt no pain. Ghetsis, well, he was unrecognizable. His entire body had been turned black. The medic was passed out on the floor. Tsukiko began crying and ran over to her, entirely lost and swept up in so many different emotions. The only ninja still conscious came over and tried to pull her off the medic but she wouldn’t let go, no, she wouldn’t leave her. She saved Tsukiko’s life. NO! The man, his fingers glowing blue, poked Tsukiko on the forehead and she passed out.

When she awoke, she was on a cot, as were the other children that had underwent judgement by Ghetsis. Staring over her was that shinobi that put her to sleep.
“Shush, don’t say anything. Let me explain, moonchild.” Moonchild? Tsukiko thought. Only her father called her that.
“The medic that saved you, Illiya, is perfectly fine. In fact, she’s the one that healed all these people. She also healed all the people in this village.” He stopped to laugh. “She worked tirelessly for over 12 hours. You couldn’t stop her if you tried. But I guess you probably get that same feeling, don’t you, moonchild? All the converted members of your village, they were under a genjutsu. This Ghetsis, he was very adept at using genjutsu with his voice to trick these people into serving him. It took awhile to fully work, however, and that was why he did it in the forest instead of trying to affect your whole village at once. If anyone would have left, they would feel the effects of the half-formed genjutsu and his ruse would have been up. I didn’t see your parents anywhere, though. Where are they, moonchild?”
Tsukiko told him their names and what they looked like. The shinobi looked troubled. Using handsigns, he summoned up a small bird. He wrote a note and attached it to its leg. “Go, take this as fast as you can to Getsukagure. I must go now, Tsukiko, and tend to some matters, but I will remain in this village for a few days and check back in on you again soon.”
Within a day, Tsukiko was released from the medical tent. Not by that special medic, but by a villager assigned by her. She seemed to be avoiding her for some reason. That night, the ninja came back while Tsukiko was having dinner with her family. He asked her parents if he could talk with them outside. There was a lot of yelling, muffled by the wooden walls. The ninja came back in, her parents behind him, glaring but silent. “Tsukiko Airi, what I’m about to say may sound very hard to believe, but it is all true. I called you moonchild yesterday morning. You looked confused, but I thought that was just shock from everything else I had been saying. But no. You remember that medical kunoichi from earlier? You and she are related. Distant cousins, but related under the same blood. The Wangetsu bloodline. Your real mother, the one that passed the bloodline on to you is away, lost somewhere on the mainland. This woman, she is Sakura’s half sister. A year after you were born, she announced she was ready to go on missions again. And yes, she was a jounin, a very very strong one. You used to live in Getsukagure. But I’m digressing. She left for an S-rank mission in the Land of Water a week after your first birthday. She should have been back within a month. When she wasn’t, instead of waiting for her,” he glared at my father, “your father married her sister and, so you wouldn’t know about your origins, moved out here. Your parents would enjoy keeping you in the dark all your life. If that is your wish, I will allow that. If you wish to be true to your blood, and become a strong ninja like your mother, I can take you back to the Village and we can train you.”
It wasn’t a hard choice for Tsukiko. After she heard all that, something snapped in her. Not her mind, but her bonds of trust to her parents and to the village in which she was raised. Surely, they probably knew. But they said nothing. It was disgusting. But, then again, no one from the main Village came down to tell her either. They all abandoned her. Abandoned her to Ghetsis. No, she wouldn’t have any of that. As far as she knew, the only people she knew to be trustworthy was this unnamed shinobi and her mother. “Neither. Please take me to the mainland. I don’t know what Village is in the Land of Water, but I want to go there. I don’t want to be here or anywhere around here anymore. Please.” She was close to tears. The thought of her, seven, leaving to go somewhere all by herself, was scary. But being here was much worse.
“If that is what you want, so be it. We can leave now, if you want. You can go and pack and I’ll wait down here.”
Her ‘parents’ put up a huge fight. They were okay with her going to the Village, because they could still visit her, or move up there. But the Land of Water was a whole new plane for them, somewhere they couldn’t go. Eventually, the shinobi won. Tsukiko didn’t bring anything. She didn’t want anything from the past.
Within a week, she was in the Mist Village and enrolled in the academy. She graduated and began her training as a medic. {more elucidation on that later on}
