Hero's knee-high markings were obscured in the moss-ridden swamp water he was walking through. While his immaculate hair might suggest a vain and dirt-o-phobic creature, he was in fact perfectly happy with trudging through the mud and the muck - it was just that his hair was immune to such things. This particular buck was looking for something to do. You see, he needed a purpose. He had ideas, he always wanted to be there for someone else... but it seemed that no one needed him in the area he called home. So now, he figured he would go out and try to make his mark on Matope. He just needed.... something.

Lucky Charm was frustrated, a little tired, and more than a little homicidal-feeling when it came to the vicious antics of the creature that was leading her through the swamp. "Damn you!" she cried at the creature she was beginning to loathe. "Give it back right now! Do you hear me! RIGHT NOW!!" The last was all but bellowed at the tree-colored owlcat slipping through the branches ahead of her, a circle of liana vine and poppy blooms hanging from its beak. She was racing after it, crashing loudly through the scrub and sending waves of mud in her wake as she chased after her talisman-thieving pet. "Owlcat, I will--aaaack!!" Her tirade was cut off as she misjudged a leap and ended up nearly on top of a brilliant red buck.

Well, that was unexpected, not that Hero couldn't hear the voice of a rather angry doe from so far away. The last thing he thought would happen - that should would be in his own embrace - occurred with a rather frantic attempt to move out of the way. The muck he was standing in was slightly more productive for leaping ladies.
"You know, if you wanted a hug, all you had to do was ask." Hero grinned broadly - both in greeting and in an attempt to help her anger to slip away ever so slightly. "And what is it that is causing you so much distress? Surely not a chipped scale or ruffled fur." She was just as dirty as he, what with all the jumping, running, and excursion, she had been through.

Charm spit out a mouthful of hair and turned her baleful stare at the buck she had nearly landed on. "If I wanted a hug, I'd go to my brother. He gives the best." She sniffed, and then whipped her head around at the sound of a snickering owlcat.
"As to why I was 'distressed,' as you call it, it is because that thieving Talisman stole the talisman I was working on and is shredding it for no good reason!" Her voice got continually louder as she shifted to remove herself to a standing position. At the end, she lunged away from him and at the owlcat, missing the vine by a mere tail flick before Talisman shot up into the trees again.

Hero was not daunted in the least. "Ah, but brotherly hugs, while nice, cannot always give the full meaning a hug is supposed to say."
"That cute thing? Why, it cannot be all that bad..."
But just as he said so, she lunged, and he could see how quick the owlcat could move. This did cause a slight dilemna, and unless he grew wings or claws it would not be solved. "So, I take it you have tried bribes as well as threats? Or, how important is it? Could you not make a new one?"

"What exactly are you implying, buddy?" the irritated doe questioned.
"And do you know how hard it is to find poppy blooms this season? Everyone wants them, so they're almost all gone! How else am I supposed to give someone a talisman for pleasant mushroom dreams when there are no poppies in it?" she concluded with a huff, watching Talisman as he hopped from branch to branch, dragging her work. She sighed. The blasted owlcat wouldn't come down until he was ready, so she took a deep breath and turned again to her almost-victim.
"I'm sorry. It's just that I've been chasing him for a really long time now. I'm Lucky Charm, by the way. Sorry for nearly squishing you."

Hero could only smile innocently. He didn't give many hugs, so how would he know? His family was hardened and such concepts were brushed aside.
"No, I didn't know - but then again, I have never indulged in the powers of the poppy." Yes, it looked like it was a lost cause - but then again, maybe the owlcat would come down if they ignored it. That sometimes worked.
"It is quite alright," his grin got just a little bigger. "I can understand how going to such lengths with little results can be frustrating. I wish I could of greater service, but he is as much out of my reach as of yours."
"I am Hero," he half-bowed in the sludge. "No harm done. So do you make other kinds of talismans - or just those that give dreams?"

"He is a damn stubborn creature, is what he is. And well he knows it," she informed Hero.
"I make all sorts of talismans and charms and such. Forgetting, pleasant dreams, happy life, cheering up, mind clearing, so on and so on. Did you need one? Usually I keep a store of them with me but I ran out and was making that one"--she gestured upwards--"for a friend." She sighed. "I normally wouldn't have gone chasing after him, I know it's a bad idea, but he already shredded the charm I keep for level-headedness."
Talisman was miffed that his play time with Charm had been cut short by the bigger male. Dark eyes narrowed, the owlcat watched the interaction, tail flicking slowly.

"A cute one too, nonetheless." Hero agreed without missing a beat.
"Interesting hobby, I am sure they are quite nice to look at considering the time and chasing you put in to each one," he gave a lopsided, sympathetic grin. He could not help but keep a snort back about her level-headedness talisman - he was sure she could made do without.
"I fully admit I sleep quite well, and I am quite content with the way things are going. However, I am about to embark of a grand adventure, and I would be honored to have one of your talismans to protect and watch over me.... if it isn't too much to ask for." Hero shifted, slightly uncomfortable now that he was asking for something. "I don't have anything to give in return in such a fine gift... except maybe... a hug."

"Some days, this is true. Today, however, he is more vexing that adorable."
She studied him closely, eyeing him up and down, then circled him, not unlike a carrion bird. "Hmm," she said. "I could make a protection charm with little problem." His offer of trade--what was with this fellow and hugs?--made her pause and consider. "I suppose that would be acceptable," Charm informed Hero, and set about looking for the necessary bits to make a protective charm for him. "What sort of grand adventure will you be starting then?" It always helped to know if certain things are needed--bits like crocodile teeth were sometimes hard to come by, if one wanted to avoid the vicious creatures.

Hero shifted again, now uncomfortable with her looking at him as if judging the taste of a promising looking fruit.
"Well," he took a deep breath, gathering around him the courage to discuss his Quest. The buck wasn't ashamed of it - quite the opposite - but he wasn't sure how others might think of it. It was a kind of personal Quest, and not one intended for bragging of his great deeds.
"I am going on a Quest to help others. I have been wanting to do this for some time, but was always slightly afraid of starting. It won't be easy - all the travelling and dangers and putting myself in harms way for others....but I feel this is something I need to do." Hero licked his lips a little. "I should really start.... maybe your talisman will give me the last bit of encouragement I need," he winked, trying to ease the seriousness of the conversation.

He was a rather fidgety buck, wasn't he? Hmm. Oh, well, making a charm for him wouldn't take long, and she set about in widening circles collecting bits she would need. A sturdy vine to hold everything and keep his determination strong. The tail feather of a songbird to keep his spirits high, and the teeth of a lynx as protection from danger.
And now she was stuck, because teeth and hooves could only do so much. This was where she needed the deft paws of her pet. She cast a glance at Talisman, still in the tree, her poppy vine slowly drooping as his beak sliced through the vine. "Talisman," she crooned, "won't you come down and help me, love? I can't do it without you."
The owlcat blinked, his sharp beak slicing cleanly through the last fiber of the vine, sending brilliant poppy blossoms cascading to the ground around his mistress and the red buck.

Hero's gaze never left her movements as the doe moved around. He dutifully stood watch, his flopping ears twitching every now and then. When she looked up sweetly to the owlcat, he allowed his eyes to follow her's.
As the poppy blossoms came down, they seemed to embrace Lucky Charm's face so elegantly. He was entranced - this was why he wanted to start this Quest: for those that need his help but may be too shy or scared to ask for it...not that this particular doe needed him.
Hero cleared his throat, if not for himself as for her. "Lucky Charm, is there anything I can do to assist you and/or Talisman?"

Charm looked over at his question, a red poppy caught between her horn and ear, and smiled sweetly. "There is nothing I need assistance with, but for retrieving Talisman and gathering the items I need for my charms. And," she added, "you will be helping greatly with the first if you stay where you are and flick your tail across your rump to clear the flowers."
Talisman had been eyeing his lost flowers with a greedy eye, especially the three that sat, perfectly balanced and almost blending with his coat, on the back of the red buck taking his doe's time and making her give him a charm. The graceful tail that had been flicking slowly had begun to twitch in earnest now as Talisman lowered his head and shoulders and prepared to pounce.

Hero was grinning madly and holding back laughter. The flowers tickled, and his childish nature was stronger than his dutiful side. "Yea-ah" he giggled, "I -heh- ca-n do tha-at."
His tail came up almost right away and swapped the petals aside. The buck shivered to get the last of the lingering ones off his fur. He chuckled a little more before straightening up again.
"How else can I assist?" The buck walked to some vine blossoms, "Need these?"
