THE SACRIFICE
On an island, in a place lost, dinosaurs roam free and few things are as they appear. We live in caves, high in the bluffs overlooking a narrow river, dotted with white rapids. I was the first to arrive, waking up on the sandy river bank, scared and confused, alive but alone. Soon I realized I was being watched by a cunning hunter, a beast prowling downstream, silent, still, watching and waiting. Instinctively I ran upstream, seeking not a weapon but a place to hide, spotting a large waterfall ahead. Exhausted and dirty, I dashed into the downpour hoping for cover, hoping to survive. To my shock, I fell through the rushing water into a dark cave, hitting my side hard against an unseen object. Breathlessly crawling behind it, I felt the warm blood seep from my ribs as I fainted. When I woke there was an odd light filling the room and before me was a large stone carved shrine. My blood, now dry, smeared down the side of the pedestal. Slowly I stood, peeking above the alter, expecting to see the monster waiting but instead, next to my splatter of blood along the edge laid several objects, some form of backpack which I later found to contain clean clothing, a silver dagger, one spear with a sharp stone tip, a golden chalice, assorted fruits and vegetables filling a wicker basket and most oddly, a flint to start fire. Hardly questioning my good fortune, it was not long before I left my shelter fortified, prepared to face my surroundings. I found safety in the elevated caverns and soon others appeared. First I saw a man laying in the wet sand not far from where I awoke and not a day later a woman. Derek and Tanya soon became allies and friends, pressing along side me into this mysterious world. We explored the island when able, finding the upper and lower edges of the river simply pouring into the ocean. Seeking the source of the waterfall, we found no beginning, a small lake that seemed to have no springs or other input, it just existed. Going to the alter several times we found it empty as if the Giver of this world, as we came to call him, chose to give forth no more. As we learned to fend for ourselves and realized the knowledge we lacked to do so without the gifts of the Giver, my mind began to replay the events of that first day. The stranger my thoughts became, the more certain I was of them. The reason for the alter, the meaning of the dagger, the precious goods of my flesh traded for the items not provided by the island had been my blood. Returning to the hidden rock hollow behind the shower of water, we discovered the truth to my madness, the answer to our survival. When we needed what this world did not provide, we had to sacrifice.

Kicking off her shoes in front of the fire where dinner cooks, Chris relaxes, trying not to fall asleep, finding it easy to relax in her cavern home, safe from the predators outside. She closes her eyes, feeling the heat from the fire on her face, thinking of another time. Tanya nudges her to wake for dinner. Chris fills her plate with freshly cooked rabbit and wild green beans and begins eating. During dinner, she looks out of the cave at the setting sun, a beautiful array of colors from what little she could see on the bluffs horizon. She hears the night predators as they come out in search of prey, knowing they can smell the cooked food. Dirt trickles down past the cave entrance as a beast paws at the ground above her. They will not leave the safety of their home until sunrise.

((no stars))
Derek finishes his meal, looking at the two women sitting around the fire with him. He clears his throat as he sets his plate on the stone floor beside him. "Ladies....And how was your day?" He reaches down and rubs his left knee, having become accustomed to the pain at the end of each day, yet knowing tonight was different. "I believe we can expect rain tomorrow. This old hockey knee never fails to predict the weather." He grins, trying not to wince as he stands and stretches, to proud to show weakness in front of these women. They were fighters, survivors, and the best company one could ask for in any circumstances.

Riscaa smiles at Derek, watching him try to be a manly man. She admired him for a moment before replying to his question. "I had a good day, no encounters, nothing tried to kill me." Shaking her head at how that had become a rare day, she thought back. She had spotted the occasional dinosaur, sometimes in groups of three or four, hunting her or deciding if they should. She wished she had paid attention in school, perhaps she would know they names of the different animals she encountered knowing they were probably not the same creatures here anyway. "Hey, we need to start naming the locals. The Labrador sized ones with spiky tails and tan skin, they should be 'spikes'."

Riscaa pauses before saying to the others "Speaking of Spikes, listen." She could could hear them cooing down below, their numbers growing in dusk. "They're hunting something. I'm going down." She stuffs her dagger in a holder on her thigh and grabs the spear near the cave door. Reaching out for the rope she grips it tightly with her hands and feet and moves down slowly, looking into the riverbed. Her worst fear fulfilled, she sees a man being hunted, their tan bodies camouflaging with the sand. Reaching the bottom, she beings running toward him upriver, her footfalls almost silent. Almost to him, she whispers "Don't move."

He stiffens preparing to fight this crazed woman coming at him with a spear. When he hears her tell him not to move he takes it as a threat. He falls into a trained fighting stance hoping to take the spear from her before he becomes to badly injured since he had no clue where to find medical supplies.

Noting his response, not blaming him for thinking she's the enemy, she quickly tosses him the spear. "Put your back against mine and prepare to defend yourself or we are dinner." Riscaa lights a torch and pulls her blade, seemingly at the same time. She waves the torch around so that he can see the spiky tailed beasts eyes shine, all aimed at them.

He looks puts his back against hers as he realizes she isn't the enemy at this point. As the first thing attacks he stabs it effortlessly and swings the point at the next closest beast.

Many of the creatures back away from the light, yet she see's one with desperation in his eyes just as he leaps at her, she jabs her dagger into it's jugular. It yipes almost dog like as it falls helplessly to the ground. She judges the distance to the sacrificial cavern and her cave where the others wait, deciding on home. "Hope you can climb a rope. We're going to walk back to back down the river and get out here. Got it?" She was surprised he fought so well and seemed, for the moment, unafraid. She grew more confident they would win this fight.

he looks at the creatures one more time, then quietly he replies "yes, m.." he stops before giving this quite dominant woman more dominance over him by accepting her as his master already.

Derek watches Riscaa, suddenly hearing what she heard, hoping to hear another dinosaur being hunted, calling for help. He holsters his pistol and grabs the cool end of a log from the fire before following her to the rope and sliding down one handed. He reaches the ground and realizes he his eyes are adjusted to light and he cannot see her as she slips off into the thickening darkness. Dropping the burning log at his feet to mark they way back for her, he shakes his head, knowing what she fears. Is this not how she found Tanya and himself. And what of the nameless woman they found one morning, her flesh torn and her open eyes empty. He drew his gun and waited for her return or call for help.
