How To Get Around -The most basic thing you will learn about in this guide is how to navigate your way through the fun site of Gaia. The easiest way to get around is by using the toolbar. It is located near the top of the page, directly below your avatar. If you place your mouse over one of the headings, a drop-down menu appears. You can then use this to navigate to a more precise page on the site. This saves a lot of time and clicking!Links are also at the bottom of the page. These links eliminate the drop-down menus.

Avatars -In the upper-left corner of your screen lies a small, cartoon character. That would be your avatar! This little guy (or girl) appears next to all your posts, comment, and on your profile. The main place where you purchase items for your avatar is in the Shops. These items can be purchased at any time, unless, of course, the item is a limited-time item. There is also a Cash Shop, where you can purchase Monthly Collectibles. These items, however, cost real money. That being said, I suggest you not purchase these until you are positive you are going to stick with Gaia. Now that you have bought your clothes, it's time to play dress up! Each user starts out with their own set of starter items, which are the clothes you have on when you join, and the few items you have in your inventory. They give you these items, of course, so you do not have to walk around in the nude. You can also purchase items from the shops. To change your outfit, click on your avatar in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Then, from there, you can put on or remove clothing from your avatar.Along with changing the clothing, you can also change your avatar's features. When you are customizing your avatar, you have the option of changing their mouth position and their pose.Above your avatar, there is a reset button. This removes any items from your avatar that you applied when you clicked on it. This sets it back to the way it was before you started editing it. Remember, when your avatar is the way you would like it, don't forget to save! There is a big save button directly above your avatar on the customization screen. When you click this, it updates your avatar at the top of the screen, along with next to any forum posts you make and on your profile.Another important part to your Gaia account is your profile page. You can edit this by positioning your mouse over My Gaia and clicking Profile. An alternative way to edit it by scrolling to the bottom of any Gaia page and clicking Profile. When someone clicks on your username, this is what they see. You have control over everything that is shown on your profile. A few of the things present on your profile are your online status, your friends list, and where you posted last.

Posting -The best way to communicate with other Gaians is by posting in forums. Knowing how to post is a crucial part of Gaia. The most important thing to worry about when posting is whether or not your content violates the Terms of Service. If anything you post DOES violate these rules, you could be banned. The terms of service are basically a list of rules all users must abide by.The main place for posting is the Forums. You can reach the Main Forum Index from positioning your mouse over the forums header on the toolbar or scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the forums link. Once you reach the Main Index, there are a range of topics to choose from. They are divided into subforums from there. For example, when you click on Chatterbox, it is further divided into Achievements, Freinds Chat, and Recycle Bin. Keep in mind that each forum and/subforum may have it's own set of rules, so look for a sticky that lists those. In addition to those rules, be sure to follow the Terms of Service as you post. There are three different types of posts you can make. Sticky posts are posts that, once posted, do not move on the list of threads. They stay in one place and cannot be moved up or down. A Normal post is one that can be "bumped" up or moved down due to no activity. Finally, an Announcement post can be used to post something important. No other users can post on an announcement thread. There are member-run forums on Gaia as well. These are known as Guilds. You can reach this section of the site by positioning your mouse over the Forums header in the toolbar and clicking My Guilds in the drop-down menu, or you can scroll to the bottom of the page and click Guilds. You can see a list of guilds by going to the Gaia Guild Registry. This provides you with a list of all the guilds on Gaia. You can join guilds by going to the Guild Homepage of the guild you wish to join and clicking the orange Join Guild button at the top of the page. This takes you to a form where you input why you would like to join. Some guilds require you to have certain information in your form in order for it to be accepted. It is important that you read the guild homepage and any rules the guild provides before submitting your form. In addition to all this, it is important to know that it costs 20,000 Gaia Gold to create a guild. Owning a guild is a BIG responsibility. Be sure you are ready to take it on before you spend the gold!Another way to communicate with other users is via Private Message or PM. This is a message that can only be seen by one user. This is best for private discussions or discussions between friends. It can also be used to contact someone who has left forums or games. It is still important to follow the Terms of Service!Another way to communicate with other users is through the virtual world of Towns. You can reach towns by positioning your mouse over the World header on the toolbar and clicking Towns in the drop-down menu or scrolling to the bottom of any Gaia page and clicking Towns. Unlike forums, this chat is in real time. To chat, click in the text bar, type your message, and click send or press enter. Always follow the Terms of Service when chatting with your friends in towns! The final way to communicate with other users is by posting comment on your friend's profile or leaving a comment on their journal. Please respect the person who's journal or profile you are commenting on! Remember to follow the Terms of Service.

Earning Gold -
The currency of this online world is gold. This is a crucial part of your account. Below are a few things you can do with it, and a few ways you can earn it.
The most basic thing you can do with your gold is transfer it between you and another user. New users trade until about 3 days after their account is created. You also need to purchase a trading pass, which costs 500 gold. You can do this simply by positioning your mouse over the Shops header on the toolbar and clicking Trade on the drop-down menu, or scrolling to the bottom of the screen and clicking Trade. Once the page loads, you have the option of loading past transactions or starting a new trade. You can do this simply by typing a username in the box and clicking Go. In order for a trade to complete, each user must accept it by inputting his.her password. Trades are safe and confidential. There is no possible way for the other user to retrieve your password, unless you tell them, of course, which I highly do not recommend.
You can earn gold for almost everything you do on Gaia! Posting in forums, surfing the site, commenting on profiles or journals, and voting in polls are all ways you can earn quick gold. You can see how much gold you have by looking up at the toolbar in the upper-right hand corner of the screen. The amount you have is displayed next to a little gold piece.
Playing the Games on Gaia is another great way to earn gold. They require different skills to play, and are lots of fun! With the games, it is best to try them all and find out which one is the best for you.
You can also use the Marketplace to earn gold, or spend gold. The marketplace is a place for user-run sales, where you can sometimes buy items for less than the store price or sell items for more than the store price. You can reach the marketplace by positioning your mouse over the Shops header on the toolbar and clicking Marketplace on the drop-down menu, or by scrolling to the bottom of any Gaia page and clicking Marketplace. Something to keep in mind, though, is that there is a 2% Sales Tax on all sales in the Marketplace. This means if you sold an item for 100 gold, you would make a profit of 98 gold.

Things To Avoid -
Gaia can be fun, but there are some thing you want to be careful of to avoid jeopardizing your account. Avoid the following things and you can be sure that your account, items, and gold are safe.
The most common way people try to get into your account is by asking for your password. The most common way they do it is through PM, imitating a Site Moderator. This is serious. A Moderator would NEVER ask for your password. If someone does ask for your password via PM, scroll down to the bottom of the message and locate a red button that says Report This PM. This is the best way to alert a site moderator right away of this user's actions. By doing this, you may have saved many other users' accounts!
Another way people try to get your password is by creating websites that LOOK like Gaia, but aren't Gaia. These sites ask you to log in, and record your information as you type it. It is important that you DO NOT enter your information into ANY site that IS NOT Gaia. You can check this by looking at the URL. If it is not GaiaOnline.com, then DO NOT enter your login information on the site. Record the URL and report it.
Scamming is another way users try to get your items/gold. You know you are being "scammed" when you are taking part in an unfair trade. Scammers usually get you to enter into contests that do not exist, or they have you give them items, but they do not give you the items they promised. If you are in a situation like this, report the user.
If you see anybody violating the Terms of Service, be sure to report them. You will be making Gaia a safer place! An example of this is harassment, which can be in the form of bullying, or posting inappropriate pictures on your profile.
Now that I have told you what to report, I might want to tell you HOW to report! First, there are links at the bottom of the Forum index that say "Report a Scamming", "Report a Hacking", and "Report Abuse or Harassment." If you need an immediate response, go to the forum where the incident being reported occurred, and look for a link labeled "Forum Moderators", and send a Private Message to one that's online. If it's a site that you are reporting, this goes under "Report a Hacking," as that is what the site is intended to do.
