A new world opened up in terms of scents. And then there were his feathered paws that felt a lot more. He became the puddle monster, raining down with his soft pitter-patters. He backed up into a tree and slid down its muddy trunk. Shaking, he looked behind. Stubby tail didn’t shake as much. Between the now and the next and next, he was already galloping between the trees as light receded. There was no need to slink among the shadows in this form. He gave a short bark at some mongoose, scattering them. Singling out the most colorful one he bundled after it, half-chasing and part-hopping, excitement running through his veins.

Willow was, by now, rather familiar with the aches and pains, troubles and annoyances of getting knocked up -- and, by association, adept at hunting the elders and shaking them down for blessings. Her experience, at this point, had taught her a few important lessons:

First, that the Legendary Kimeti seemed to be no different from her, except for some arbitrary gift from the Swamp. None of them seemed especially wise to her --

The second, in fact, was that most seemed to be worse in many ways, vain or weird, secretive and elusive and above all else annoying.

Most importantly, though, she'd come to realize that while a blessing seemed to mean that she would carry more babies to term, would have to deal with more offspring someday, perhaps, it also meant that the carrying was easier. She felt less achy, after a blessing. She felt less grumpy, eventually.

So she was here, stomping her feet and grumbling to herself, one flank still splattered with the remains of some dye-or-another, purple and brown and pink. Three circles made of the area in search of a stag who seemed to elude her before she gave up and raised her voice instead. "....aren't you interested in an opportunity to show off?"

Faintly aware of the other kimeti, Fiend sped up instead of slowing down to greet her. She was goading him. He barked to acknowledge her request, running deep into the groves after the bright mongoose. And boy did he gave chase. Round and round the trunks they went until the mongoose thought to escape him up a tree. Joke was on it! Tongue wagging, eyes fiercely determined, he noticed a fallen trunk nearby at a most pleasing angle. And the best part? It connected with the tree the mongoose was on. He stretched out, wagging his tail and casually scratched against the tree. Let the mongoose think he was giving up. With his eyes still on the prize, he heaved himself up the log and started to sprint, his claws seeking purchase. He didn't look down. Up and up he went. Leaping, he caught the colorful poofball before landing on the thick branch. He radiated satisfaction. Spotting the other doe, he smiled down on her, giving a mangled bark around the mongoose in his mouth. Impressive, wasn't he? This form was proving useful. Others didn't shy away, but came to him finally.

The bark drew her inward, to linger at the edge of the grove. Willow watched the unusual Eaglehound stalk its prey, chase, capture, and her expression was supremely unamused. Exactly as she'd thought: there was nothing elegant or graceful about hunting down a dumb beast and shaking it between his jaws.

If she were a legendary, she thought she would take great pains to float about and exude an air of self-certainty and importance.

Perhaps that was why she wasn't a legendary.

"Oh. Yes. You caught a thing. Fascinating." Her tone was dry, still goading.

And just like that, he dropped the mongoose, paying no attention to where it scampered off to. My, oh my. This doe was a surly one. Sitting down on his haunches, he scratched an ear with his hindlegs, thinking. She seemed oddly expectant. Usually things ran away from him. He launched off the branch to land directly in front of her. He poked around, nosing her chest. Heartbeat seemed normal, but there were odd cadences. He made his way around her abdomen, tail wagging with friendliness. He pressed with his nose and watched it bounce back. Fat. This doe was plump, unlike the mongoose he just had. Sigh, it always seemed like a tradeoff--the bright ones were usually too skinny, more muscle than softness. His jaws ached. He poked her belly again and looked at her cross face. Big and scary is the opposite of expecting mothers should be. He pressed his nose against her belly once more. Relax a little. The fun’s about to start. Eyes still sparkling, he bit her side where the ribcage sat and ran off without another thought. Good, she had strong bones to support the added weight.

He -- he bit her! Jaw dropping some, Willow stood where she was for just a moment, feeling fat and heavy and indignant, before she took off after him. Laden down as she was, it wouldn't be hard for Fiend to outpace her, to escape between the trees and leave her lagging horribly in his wake. Her voice, however, could keep up at least:

"That's not how you're supposed to do it!"

There's more than one way to skin a lynx. But he was already gone.
