Here is where all the first years come to be sorted. During the ceremony, they come up and reach into the Sorting Jar and take out a piece of parchment. They then hand it to the Deputy Headmaster (or Mistress) who reads it out loud.

This may seem randomly done, but the jar has been enchanted to tell the personality of a person, and the writing on the parchment does not appear until the student takes it completely out of the Jar.
