{{ Continuation from [ORP] Meet & Greet }}

As they walked towards their new habitation she took a moment to examine her companion a little more closely. She held herself well – she had good posture, better than Dani’s at least – but she seemed a little uneasy. Was she uncomfortable around strangers? Dani hoped she hadn’t done anything to offend her already; that would not have been a promising start to the year. She decided the best course of action would be to try and engage her new friend-potential in conversation. “So, Basia, where are you from?” She asked and, after considering her attire added, “Upper Sewit I’m assuming?”

Basia was glad the Danica had agreed to come up with her, she had no idea where A1 was and no clue where she'd misplace her own map. She was grateful with Dani, could she call her Dani? Took out her own map, she'd figure out the nickname later on. With their room located in the main building, Basia grabbed her own bag and followed beside the girl, at least the place was in the main building and there was little chance she'd be getting lost. Basia had never be lost before, her mom had taught her how to get to the library at night and that was about the only place she was allowed to go. Basia sighed, her mother had tried protecting her and yet made her so unprepared for the world, much less a school with kids with powers.

“Yes, Upper Sewit, how'd you guess?” Than a single glance at her attire gave her an answer. “The clothing kind of gave it away.” Basia answered her own question, though curiously she glanced at the girl beside her. “And where are you from Dani?” Darn, she'd let the nickname slip. “Can I call you Dani? I'm not sure how nicknames work, don't want to offend you or anything.” She probably sounded like someone who had no idea what she was talking about, truth was, she'd never read books about nicknames. She'd read so many books, and yet the only time she'd found the knowledge she'd collected useful was when she'd been attacked on her way over; even then she'd only known what the creature was.

As they entered the building, Basia glanced around. The corridors were slowly filling in with students that were on their way to their own rooms after grabbing something at the buffet. Everyone was so different... Some looked like your average citizen, walking around with books and chatting friends they knew. Others on the hand, like herself, stood out with scales, extra limbs, different skin colours and more that Basia couldn't even identify. It was all so... Exciting and nerve wreaking at the same time! Some of the student glanced at her, her eyes, but there was a smile on their face. The blond could only smile back, it felt oddly nice not to have to hide. She turned to Danica “Where to?”

Danica smiled. “Sure, Dani is fine.” So maybe she hadn’t offended the girl after all. Dani hoped that the two of them would get along well. It was funny, this Basia seemed so uncomfortable with something as mundane as a nickname. Dani herself would hardly hesitate, if she could think of a proper nickname for Basia. She wondered how much social experience her new roommate had had growing up, if something so common place gave her pause. As strange a world as they lived in powers like they had were not exactly common, Danica didn’t have any problems since her powers were subtle and she had no physical signs of mutation, but Basia’s eyes must have made her ability much harder to hide… or maybe she’s just shy and I’m overthinking. “I’m from Ronth,” she said, paused, then added “go Ravens go.”

Apparently other students had decided to leave the buffet early as the hallways were already starting to fill with people, coming and going from room to room. Dani took out her pamphlet again to double check where they were going and then motioned to the first hallway on the left. The benefit of having a room numbered A-1 was that it was incredibly easy to find; nothing tricky about the first room. “It should be at the end of the hall.”

Basia mentally high five'd herself, one point to her for not messing up nicknames and a potentially good relationship with her roommate. The corners of her lips twitched just a bit for a smile, if only her mom could see her now, making friends and living with a roommate. Considering she was meeting someone from Ronth, it made her all the more exciting, though Basia had no idea why Dani liked ravens so much. "I've never been to Ronth." She found ravens annoying and their cawing in the morning always disturbed a peaceful sleep, it was probably unwise to start off their friendships by telling her roommate she hated her favourite bird. Basia made a mental note to look up some more about the birds, one brief read hadn't really provided a good understanding of the species.

Basia leaned forward to also stare at the map, their room was easily located, and like Dani said, was at the end of the hall. Grabbing her dress and suitcase once more Basia headed down the hall, most of the doors were open and the girl stared inside at all the happy and excited faces, so maybe a roommate wouldn't be so bad. A1 was unlocked, so Basia pushed the door and stepped inside and took everything in. Her eyes went wide in shock, this room was so much bigger then her own at home. Basia walked in, going for the bed on the right and taking a seat on the corner. She continued to stare around. “This is amazing.”

There were already a number of people in their rooms, down this hall. Dani wondered if they were all new students, like themselves, or returning students. The latter seemed more likely as she and Basia had been amongst the first to leave the gathering downstairs. Basia reached the room before her and opened the door. What she saw was either very good or very bad, because her eyes went wide as soon as the door swung open. Danica reached the door just as her roommate spoke. It was a nice room; bigger than she had been expecting, anyway. There wasn’t much in there as far as furnishings went, just a couple of desks, dressers, beds, and a bookshelf, but it had windows on two walls and a nice open feel. “Yep,” she agreed, “I think I can get used to this.”

There were two keys sitting on top of the low bookshelf beside the door. Danica picked them up and passed one to Basia. “Here, this one is yours. Don’t loose it,” she joked.

She took a few steps into the room and dropped her duffle bag down on the desk in the corner. The two desks were side by side and both half-under one of the windows, the only difference was that the one she dropped her bag on had a computer monitor and keyboard on it already. Danica looked under the desk and saw – as she expected – her computer tower. It had taken her family a good long time to find a computer that she could use without having to worry about power surges; they had ended up having to special commission it from a company out in Sewit. “Mine from home,” Danica explained with a wave at the flat screen monitor. “Why don’t you take first choice of the beds?”

Basia quietly agreed with Dani, this she could truly get used to, this decision was turning out to be one of the best her mother had ever taken. She smiled, she would miss her mother and promised to return when her school was over. Basia took the key and held onto it, she have to find some place to put it so she wouldn't lose it. Her mother had never given her a key, not that she really needed one considering her mother kept the house on lock down for the most part. Realizing she still had her bags in hand, Basia dropped them and looked above her to the other bed.

“I'd like the top bed please.” Too bad her portals weren't big enough for her to fit through yet, she wouldn't need to climb the small ladder to get on the top. Getting up again, Basia made her way over to the computer. “I've never seen one like this.” She murmured quietly, examining it. Her mother had always told her they didn't have enough money for toys, or gadgets. The shop provided for them, but just enough for them to get by. Her mother had wanted her to take over the shop, but those were dreams and Basia wasn't sure she was very good with anything that was related to clothing. In fact, she wasn't sure what her skills were exactly except for her portals, and even those she only knew what she'd taught herself.

“That works for me!” Dani said brightly, “I’m an early riser, so I don’t want to worry about waking you up by shaking the bed on my way down from the top bunk. Oh! You don’t have to worry about me at all. I sleep like a rock.”

The redhead watched her new roommate check out the room, and then her computer. “You probably wouldn’t have. We had to have it specially made, because,” she paused and rubbed the back of her neck awkwardly, “my powers have a… er… negative effect on electronics, lets say? My parents tried to get me a laptop computer and, well, lets say it didn’t end well.” The battery combusted, her desk at home had the scorch marks to prove it. While she was on the subject though… maybe she should just tell her new roommate what her powers were. After all, give their nature, she was going to find out. Probably sooner, rather than later. She sighed and plopped down in the chair behind her desk.

“My… er… skill, is that I amplify… things. Powers. Mostly. I don’t have a lot of control over it either… it just kind of happens. It’s worse if I’m anxious or excited, or if I’m touching the person. I’m telling you because, uh, it will probably affect you, so you should probably have a heads up.” Dani grinned awkwardly, well that was painful. Her powers… they had a way of causing trouble for her… more than just the occasional short circuiting electronic device. It stood to reason that she would be uncomfortable sharing them with another super powered person. But she was at a school full of super powered people now, and she should probably get comfortable fast, because she had a feeling she was going to have to explain her abilities to a lot of people in the coming weeks.

“Oh that's fine, I don't stay in bed either. I used to sleep atop a seamstress workshop, so you don't have to worry about noises either, I sleep like a rock.” Truth was, she hadn't even noticed how quiet this room was. Basia wasn't sure if that was a good or bad thing yet, she was so used to hearing the machines below her being noisy as her mother sewed dresses and pants together for clients. Though, she'd honestly picked the top bunk to be able, one day to teleport herself atop the bunk. It would look so odd if she ever managed it. She would open a portal atop the bed and then one below her, she would fall right through and land on her bed but she'd have to bend down to get her whole body atop the bed. The thought made Basia smile.

Basia glanced from the desktop to Danica, her brow lifting curiously, “What happened?” Now she wanted to know her powers, maybe it would be the best time to tell Danica her own powers. She'd never seen anything bad happen from her powers, unless she purposefully did something, but her mother had warned her about doing bad things. Telling her wild stories to scare her, but Basia had never really believed her.

Dani told Basia, which Basia was thankful for since she didn't really want to make her roommate feel awkward by asking what her powers were. It made Basia comfortable with telling Dani what her own powers were. “You won't have to worry about my powers, I'm not very lethal, well I don't think I am,” now she was a little nervous. “I don't shoot laser beams from my eyes or anything, that would have been awesome, but I do open portals.” To show what she meant, Basia left her arm slighting from her side and opened a portal to stick half her arm inside. The other portal appeared behind Danica and Basia gently tapped her on the shoulder, a grin on her face. “You amplifying my powers might just be what I need to get my whole body through so I can portal atop my bed.”

“To make a relatively long story considerably shorter… it blew up. It short circuited, but there was something wrong with the battery and… well… but hey! The only casualty was my desk, so no harm no foul, right?

“Portals?”
Dani sat up with an eager smile on her face. That sounded so cool. (And delightfully nonviolent.) She was a little bit surprised that her roommate’s powers weren’t connected to her eyes, but there was just another cautionary tale for people judging a book by its cover. The redhead watched as Basia opened a small portal beside her and slipped her hand inside. It was pink and blue! What a funny colour combination. For some reason she had been expecting the portals to be see-through or like a black hole. Something poked her shoulder and she looked down with wide eyes to see Basia’s hand coming out of another small portal behind her. Dani looked back at her roommate with a grin. So cool.”

“How big can you open portals right now?”
Danica asked. It would nice to work on her amplification powers with someone without having to worry about them – oh – trying to knock down a building, for example. Portals seemed like a relatively harmless and remarkably awesome power to practice with.

Basia's grin could not get any bigger when Dani told her the portals were cool, she was so happy her roommate was so nice. It was also nice to know that she wouldn't have to fight any weird powers, well maybe with the exception of not letting anything electric get near Dani in case something exploded again. “Haha, thanks.” Her cheeks flushed a little, it was also nice not to have to hide her powers anymore, not have to hide who she was and her eyes. This was going to be an amazing year, and she was going to have some serious fun.

The only thing Basia wished for, was that that her mother could see her. Could see her grow, could see her laugh, could see her living happily. For once, Basia was happy of her mothers decision to send her to Sidekick Academy. Had hadn't seen it before, but now she saw it clearly. She was going to have to get a camera and get a picture of everything, write down as much as she could in the hopes that when she would come back home, she would be able to show her mother. She wanted her mom to feel as if she had been there watching her, even if she was no where in sight. The thoughts saddened Basia a little, but Dani broke her train of thoughts.

She think about it for a little while, she wasn't sure herself how big her portals could go. “Not sure, let's test.” Basia retreated her hand and closed all portals, than taking a breath she focused on the portal she was about to open. The portal opened, wavering as she struggled with herself to get it to open as wide as she could. Once she thought it was stable, Basia moved forward and stuck her head in. Her head appeared out of another portal right next to the one she was currently in. “I guess about the size of my head,” Basia giggles. “Not very big I suppose.”

Dani leaned forward to rest her elbows on the desk and laced her fingers under her chin. “I wonder how big you might be able to open them with a… I guess with a ‘boost’. I’m not very good at doing it on purpose, it kind of seems to depend on my mood. But maybe if I try…” Dani closed her eyes and tried to concentrate. Back when she had hung out ‘with the gang’ she never really had to try and affect people; the whole experience was so rebellious and taboo that she was always running on a slight emotional high, the slightest thing could have her giving people a power spike. After the incident, however, she had spent more time trying to consciously contain her ability than use it. Dani wasn’t really sure how to do it now, but she tried to think of exciting things and force her heart rate up. She pictured the aura around her growing stronger and wider until she felt like it filled the entire room.

“Try… now…” she encourage her new roommate, without opening her eyes.

Basia was curious, but she watched Dani quietly until the girl asked her to try it out, eyes still closed. Not really knowing how her roommates powers worked, but figured the best way was to grab onto the power source, she didn't want to disturb Dani in whatever she was doing after all. Extending one of her hands, she grabbed onto Dani’s hand with her other hand and opened up a portal. Basia had never seen her portals get this big, she could pretty much walk right into the one she’d just made! Narrowing her eyes, she tried to manipulate it. Slowly, the portal changed it’s shape, going from an upright oval, to one that was sideways, and then a square. “This is so cool!” Basia had never been able to get her portals this big ever. “This is so awesome Dani! You’re so cool!”

She felt her roommate’s hand on her shoulder and tried to picture the energy traveling down her arm. “Seeing” the energy probably had nothing to do with anything, but it gave her something to focus on. She still wasn’t really sure how her own powers worked. Danica waited for her the other girl to speak before she opened her eyes. Wow! The portal that Basia was manipulation was much, much larger than the open she had opened before. Dani had not been expecting that at all

“That isn’t me!” She told her new friend, with a happy laugh. “That is one-hundred-percent you, Basia. I’m just helping. That is incredible! You’ve never opened one this big before?”

If this was what her powers were going to look like after a few training days, it was going to be awesome. Really awesome. Basia still couldn`t believe this was what she was doing; Dani had to be helping her. However, just as quickly as she’d opened it up did the portal close once more. Sure Dani was amplifying her power, but her body still wasn’t used o something like this and Basia didn’t want to risk passing out. “No I’ve never opened something this big, if I try really hard most o the time I get really tired. It takes a lot of practice before I can usually handle a new size.” Now it was time to explore though, Basia wanted to unpack later on when it was close to going to bed so she could enjoy the school. “So you want to come with me? I don’t think I’m going to unpack right away, I want to explore the school and find the library.” She headed for the door, waiting for her roommates answer.
