Alvar walked slowly in the night, his dark pelt allowing him to blend in to most of the night. His tail flicked a little as he laid down and kept watch. Though he was not on guard duty he always kept a sharp eye out for anyone out of the ordinary. He yawned and stretched as he laid his head across his two massive paws and starred at the periwinkle colour on both of them. He was pleased he had joined the pride and loved meeting all the new lions and lionesses. He looked up at the moon and smiled, he loved basking in the light of the moon.

Nkosazana knew she had an early morning, but she just couldn't settle down to sleep. It wasn't something she could put her paw on. Ruefully she looked toward her den. If she went in now, she'd just toss and turn all night. Jiang siddle over to the lioness and looked her up and down. "Why don't you go for a quiet walk?" He gave a quick flap and landed on the rust colored lioness. Clearly he intented to go along.
She would have thought the bird would have been in his nest already. An amused smirk crossed her lips as the bird settled onto her whithers. He just assumed she would do as he said. She had to admit that it would be better than rolling around her den. Nko set off at an easy pace. She wouldn't go too far from the dens, just enough to get out into the cool night air. It wasn't long before her senses told her that she wasn't alone. "Hello?" She heard Jiang's amused beak clack at her silly question.

Alvar quickly got to his feet, not wanting to surprise the lioness anymore than he already would. "Hello" he said quickly, his voice kind and caring "I am sorry I did not hear you coming or I would have announced myself." He smiled at the lioness, though he wasn't sure if she could see it or not "I am Alvar" the lion said with a slight bow of his head. He had seen this lioness before, she too was a guard but he was sure they had never formally met. "I believe you are a guard, are you not? I have seen you from time to time when I have been on guard duty, though I don't think we've met before"

Nko turned to greet the dark lion. She faintly recognized him from walking around the pride. "It's no worry. I was just out for a quiet stroll to relax. I had no wish to disturb anyone." She gave him a friendly smile in return.
"A pleasure to meet you Alvar. Nkosazana, and the bird on my back is Jiang." Jiang cocked his head at the other lion. "Yes I am. It will be a pleasure to work with you."

Alvar nodded towards the bird and replied "Yes it is nice to formally meet you both. You are not disturbing me as I could not sleep and came to bask in what moonlight I could find" he looked around and replied "My serval friend, Aydan, is not here but I should like to introduce you too her." he paused presently to sniff a short breeze and then continued "I guess you could not sleep either?" He sat down on his right hind hip, allowing his left foot to push outward a little. He had had a long day and was sore so standing was not really an option at this point.

"Thank you, Alvar. I look forward to meeting her as well." Nko nodded her head with a smile. "That's good. It would be rude of me to intrude on relaxation time." She chuckled softly. Seeing the lion settle down, she decided to lay down. Perhaps a good talk with a fellow pridemember would help sooth her. Jiang hung on until he realized Nko was laying all the way down. He fluttered off her back to find himself a perch where he could observe both.
She gave a soft laugh as he pegged her correctly. "Correct. I've got an early morning patrol, and I just can't settle down to sleep. Jiang suggested talking a walk to calm myself. This doesn't normally happen to me, so I've no idea why I can't sleep." Nko laughed again. "So you must have recently joined us. It's so good to have you and welcome. What's your rank if you don't mind my asking."

The lion gave a sort of head bob, obviously nodding. "Yes I am new to the pride. I came with a group only a short time ago. I have been deemed upper-middle class, although when I came into the pride I was just wishing to have a rank high enough to be a guard" he smiled "I guess you would be a little annoyed at not being able to sleep with the early morning patrol coming. I don't like getting up so early, I greatly prefer the night. Not just because I can hide so well" he said with a slight laugh "I have always loved the moonlight." His eyes followed Jiang until he found his perch and then settled his eyes back to Nko. "I am pleased to have found such a pride it is amazing how wonderful all the members are. It is truly nice to find a pride that has such strong beliefs as I have had since I was a cub" his eyes glistened with moisture as he thought of his mother and wandering.

"I must have been out on patrol during your welcoming ceremony." As much has she would have liked to welcome another guard, someone had to be on watch for the pride. "It's a pleasant job most of the time. We get to roam and stretch our legs. I'm sure you could request night watches. You are well suited for it." She nodded to his dark pelt.
"Yes it is something isn't it? I always feel better with the Great Lion watching over me." She took a moment to look up and observe the moon. Nko turned her attention back to Alvar. "I'm pleased you are so happy here." She purred contentedly. Perhaps that stupid bird was right; Nko felt herself subtly relaxing.

Alvar gave a great laugh and nodded "Yes I am well suited aren't I? I have requested but since I am so new I understand if I still work half days. Yes, it is almost like the Great Lion gives us strength through his light. Or at least that is how I feel" he said. He looked up and heaved a sigh, he sat in this attitude for a few moments before he turned back to Nko "Yes I don't remember seeing you at my welcoming, however there are so many! Besides, the pride's safety should always come first so no hard feelings about you not being there." Alvar noticed the lioness begin to relax and decided to lay down too, now that she knew where he was he could lay down without worrying about scaring or surprising her. "If you don't mind me asking, were you born into this pride?" he asked

"There is nothing wrong with being well suited for a task. I would rather have someone who is suited to it than a lion who is indifferent." She itched her ear with a back paw slowly. "That sounds so nice. There's no better way to be close to him than under his eye." Nko liked how that sounded. Did one actually become stronger at night? She suspected more lions would request night patrols if it were true.
She laughed, "that is true. I've had to go through that myself. It is overwhelming.." Nko nodded. "Well yes and no. Our parents were born to the pride, but got separated during the great move. My brother and I were born while they were looking for the new location. Unfortunately, they died in an attack, and we were raised by another lioness."

Alvar looked down at his paws once more. He cleared his throat before speaking "I am sorry I brought that subject up. I did not know your pained past" His eyes reached hers and he smiled slightly then looked back down at the grass. "Your brother, is he still around? Is he a guard as well?" he asked trying to change the subject to a happier note. He felt bad about bringing up her past up, he knew better than that! If she didn't offer the information he should not have asked. He shook his head, hoping to fling the thoughts from his head.

"Thank you Alvar. I.... don't talk about it really." She gave a rippling shrug to throw off the mood. It wasn't her fault that her parents had died and she and her brother had been raised by a slave. That's what she really didn't want to mention. What would another lion think of that? Nko tried to ignore that fact so hard, she could no longer recall what her parents had looked like.
She gave a laugh. "Aye he's still alive. Yes he's a guard in the high class. He's got a mate." Nko twitched her ear amused. "What about you?" She smiled

The young lion smiled and shook his head "No, I do not have a mate. I do not often get along with many so finding one that likes me to be around me that long is hard" his tone of voice was slightly jesting but he obviously meant it. Besides that he had never been in one place long enough to actually get to know anyone that well. He smiled and looked at the lioness "And yourself?" he asked throwing the question back in her court. His eyes wandered to her avian friend who sat in a tree nearby. Where is Aydan? he thought as he gazed around the flat land. Surely she would be around soon, probably out having a walk. His attention turned back to the lioness, and patiently awaited her answer.

"That's a shame." She gave a soft chuckle. "Oh I think since you're here, that you will eventually find someone. Remember we all have one thing at least in common. We worship the Great Lion." Nothing said a lion had to have mate. It could be too, that his future mate hadn't joined the pride yet. A small smile crossed her lips; you can't find what hadn't arrived yet. She bet he would find someone he liked sooner or later.
Nko gave a cough. "Um, no. I don't have a mate. No one has shown any interest really. Guess I'm almost in the same boat as you." She scrutinized him for a moment before adding. "But I do have three cubs."

Alvar looked shocked, he would not have guessed that she had any cubs just by looking at her. He smiled "What are their names, if you don't mind me asking. My three cubs! They must be a handful!" he added and smiled at her. He could see a mothering side to her, but wondered if their father had died or if there had been a fling. Of course it was not polite to ask and he would never bring such a subject up. He began to wonder if any of them had her eyes, or her wonderful chest marking. He caught himself, and puzzled tried to focus on something else.
