Xiu had woken up early that morning with the intention of going out for a walk. After her various accidental--and some purposeful--delves into the dreams of friends and strangers alike, the Baku had a lot to mull over. As she stepped out of the demon dorms, she chose a direction at random (in hindsight, not the best idea) and set forth.

Of all the dreams she had visited, none of them were very...well, happy. It shouldn't have been surprising--everyone had their own problems--but these experiences had made her a little hesitant to do any more dream diving. As a Baku, it wasn't as if she could avoid it forever, but it was a little disheartening to learn of all the hidden fears and worries that her peers possessed.

Maybe she should really reconsider this barging-into-dreams business.

Lost in her thoughts, she paid very little mind to where she was going, absentmindedly weaving around any trees that stood in her way. It wasn't until she tripped over something did she snap out of her thoughts. Staggering forward, she was fortunate enough to catch herself on a nearby tree for support. A quick glance behind her determined that she had simply tripped over a particularly rough tree root...and that she had wandered into somewhere unfamiliar.

Behind her, there was gravestones jutting out from the ground. They were also in front of her, to the left of her, to the right...everywhere, basically. She had walked straight into the middle of a graveyard without realizing it. H-how long have I been walking? Xiu curled her tail around herself, pulling her arms to her chest as she tried to determine which way she had come from. It was hard when everything looked the same. I-I wonder if there's anyone out here I can ask for help?

It was a fairly abandoned spot, which was exactly why Christof loved to come to this particular graveyard. The other students generally had other things to do, and the only people he had run into out here had been the bulking form of Mr. G and occasionally Malodore.

It had been nice to have the Student Elections and Floresctival to keep his mind off of his own inner turmoils, always be busy with something, it helped to not think- but even so, the gravity of his situation kept creeping up on him.

He hadn't slept well that night. Nor the night before, really. Understandably. Upset, he did what he usually did, which was not go crying to Mistress, but find his trusty shovel, and head out for a bit of zen-digging. He had gotten as far as a bathtub-sized ditch dug before weariness had finally taken hold. Alone in the lulling silence of the graveyard, anxieties mostly worked out through pointless physical labor, the hunchback had crawled into his half-drug grave to try to give his battered, pieced-together brain a rest between the head stones.

Weaving around the headstones, Xiu focused most of her attention on surveying the area for anyone who could assist her. Unfortunately, the graveyard appeared to be--no pun intended--dead silent. For a second, a feeling of panic overtook the little Baku, when she suddenly realized something.

Digging through her obi, she fished out her eyephone, sighing with relief that she had remembered to bring it. Now she could call someone and ask for help! She began to scroll through her contacts, her attention focused entirely on the screen and not on where she was going. Maybe...one of these two? If they're not busy, I could ask them for directions or if they would be willing to come out here--!

Xiu jumped with a loud shriek sounded from behind her, tossing her phone into the air. Whirling around quickly, the Baku's heart pounded violently as she regarded the creature that had made the sound. A common corrividus. She stared at it for a few seconds before turning back, exhaling in relief...

...Only to suck in another breath. It seemed that, as she had been inattentively traveling through the graveyard, that she had nearly toppled into shallowly-dug grave. A boil was sleeping in the grave--a rather familiar boil, at that--and her phone? When she had jumped, her eyephone had slipped from her hand, and it was now lying in the grave beside the patchwork student. There wasn't any way that she could reach it without jumping in.

"...E-excuse me?" She piped up weakly, eying the boil nervously, "I-I'm sorry, if I may bother you for one moment..."

The figure, though, was still as a corpse, save for the occasional shifting and grunting as her voice stirred him from whatever it was he had been dreaming. Had she called out a command, any command, instinct would have pulled him to his feet immediately, but with just the weak nervous stammer, exhaustion kept it's grip on him. He shifted slightly, his coat falling over said phone.

Oh Jack, now what she do? She dropped her phone, and it didn't look like anyone else was around. She supposed that she could wake up the patchwork boil to retrieve her phone, but--

--...No, she...she shouldn't wake him up. Her last three dream adventures hadn't turned out very well, but she had learned a great deal about her own abilities in each of them. It wouldn't hurt to get a little more practice in, right? Of course, ideally, Xiu would ask permission before jumping into someone's dream (even if she had neglected to do so three times in a row already, granted that one time had been an accident) but since this boil was already sleeping...

Hopefully he wouldn't mind. The poor thing looked to be exhausted as well, and she didn't want to have to wake him from his slumber due to her own careless wandering. Besides, in the end, it was a win/win situation, right? He would continue to get some rest, and she would get some practice with her dream-delving abilities. It didn't take much convincing before she sat down, leaned against a gravestone, and closed her eyes. As he was the only person in the vicinity, she found the path to his dreams without any trouble at all, and followed it in.

The world inside the slumbering patchwork's head crawled around her like a rising fog, dark all around her save for a glimmer of light up ahead... the world stretched out, flat and empty except for something metallic drifting up like fallen logs around her until the ground gave way to a sheer cliff. All the way as far as the eye could see was a tangle of surgical tools, miles in length, scalpels crisscrossed like frozen waves, great bone saws dormant and waiting for the gods to amputate their fallen brothers in arms. Or something of that nature.

A lone figure was walking, very carefully, along the edge of a massive blade edge as though it were a bridge.

Xiu regarded her new surroundings with wide eyes, stopping to kneel down and warily peer down over the edge of the cliff. Taking in all the tools, the Baku let out an involuntary shiver as she imagined what would happen if she were to fall right then and there and land on one of the blades. She had yet to discover what happened if she died in a dream, if anything at all.

Her next thought was that the place seemed to be deserted...until, of course, she noticed movement from the corner of her eye. Perking up, she turned her head towards the figure and slowly rose to her feet. Could that be...the dreamer? Or...no, was it someone else? Well, there was one easy way for her to determine if it was the dreamer or another character. Taking a deep breath, she cupped her hands around her mouth.

"H...HELLO? Can you hear me?" Dropping her hands, she waited to see if there would be a response.

The figure stopped it's unsteady balancing act, glancing up from the scalpel's edge to blink at her- it... looked like hunchback, but there was something strange about him. His lips parted- that might have been a part of it. "Eu nu sunt ar trebui să vorbească." His voice was unsteady and hoarse as it drifted towards her. "Eu voi fi în necazuri."

Oh, so...it was the dreamer! But...what was he saying? Knitting her brows together, Xiu clasped her hands over her chest and shook her head slowly to show that she didn't understand. "I-I'm sorry, I don't understand..." A pause, "...That language." Apparently she didn't recognize it either.

As she eyed the blades, the ghoul wondered if she would be able to step along them as well. She wasn't sure entirely sure that she wanted to risk it, but she did take another tentative step forward towards the edge of the cliff, shivering as a bit of the edge broke away and clattered down the side. It was a long way down, but...there didn't seem to be any other way for her to go. Was there?

Turning back to the figure, she pointed at him and cocked her head to the side. "W-who are you? Can you understand me?"

The hunchback's expression pained, mouth parting to respond again when suddenly a low noise that was just on the edges of their hearing before, ignorable up until now- the pale white sky was suddenly overtaken by a growing, shifting shadow and the distant screams of calling birds and flapping wings. The young man on the edge gave a terrified noise, stumbling backward as the vultures swooped past both dreamer and eavesdropper, losing his balance to suddenly fall- the blade slicing him neatly in two.

The halves clattered downward into the tangle of metal forest, and out of sight. At least, it seemed, a sort of stair-way of utensils was close at hand, even as the birds swept past her as though she were nothing but another tree.

Eyes widening in horror, the ghoul slowly fell to knees as her mouth fell open in a gape. She was so stunned that she barely noticed the vultures that swooshed past her, her gaze frozen on the spot where the boil had once stood. What had just...?! Why was it that every time she entered a dream, she was met by so much violence and such disturbing imagery? Shakily, she peered over the edge as she attempted to catch a glimpse of where the two halves may have fallen, before her gaze fell onto the blade that had sliced the poor dreamer in two.

...She was definitely staying away from that now.

As she turned, she found that a stairway was close at hand. Had it been there before? She didn't know, but in a dream, Xiu was never surprised to find that things seemed to materialize out of thin air. With seemingly nowhere else to go, she shakily pushed herself back onto her feet, making her way towards the stairs and gingerly taking a step down. Then another. This was followed by another, and as she continued on, she found that her heart was pounding a little harder with fear. What would she find at the bottom?
PostPosted: Fri Aug 05, 2011 2:18 pm

The steps lead down, slowly evolving from blades to stone as the unnatural forest darkened around her. By the time she approached the bottom of the stairs, it wasn't a forest at all, but what looked like dungeon set up and ready for science of the mad variety. There were no patchwork parts laying around, but there was a hunched figure, murmuring quietly to itself as it swept the floor of debris- other parts, left over from something or other, but none that looked like they belonged to Christof.

At the sound of her footsteps, he turned- it was almost like the Igor she vaguely knew but different... contorted. If Igors had a natural form without their skull pins, this would be it. His hair was falling out as though he hadn't been taking his proper preservatives, eyes uneven on his face, parts bulbous and unfitting to each other even more so than usual. He shied away immediately, stepping back into the shadows of the work room with a quiet noise in the back of his throat.

What she found at the bottom of her stairs was...not really her kind of place, to say the least. Honestly, Xiu wasn't sure if she preferred the fields of blades up above, or the dark, eerie atmosphere that this place gave her. There was no point in going backwards though, so she took a few steps forward and moved away from the staircase.

The hunched figure was hard to miss, especially since the only source of sound--murmuring, it seemed--came from him. She tried to approach him as quietly as possible, but froze when he whirled around to face at. At once, Xiu staggered backwards, a whimper leaving her lips as she took in the figure's appearance. She instinctively tried to put more distance between them, but paused as she watched the stranger do the same. At least...despite his appearance, he didn't appear to be very threatening?

"W-who are you?" The Baku was careful to keep her voice soft, curling her tail around herself as she gazed at him hesitantly.

"That'th... a difficult quethtion." He managed quietly, still eying her intently from behind the machine he half hid behind. Meekly, though, as though overcome with a sudden bout of curiosity that overtook the fear in his eyes, he stepped towards her. "You look familiar. I would remember nithe partth like thothe."

"Difficult?" She repeated, looking a little puzzled by this response. Frowning, she looked thoughtful for a moment before asking, "W-what about...a name, maybe?" He had to at least have a name that she could call him by, right?

The little Baku froze a little at his next words, though she wasn't really sure which part that made her more nervous--the fact that he thought she looked familiar, or the fact that she...had nice parts? Whatever that meant, but it did make her a little uneasy. "I-is that so? I'm not sure that we've met before. I'm...I'm Xiu."

Where was the harm in giving him her real name? It seemed as if most people didn't remember their dreams after they woke up. Maybe this boil would be the same.
