Yue Lao, hot and uncomfortable from the sun and her strenuous argument on the docks, leapt back suddenly when the stranger threw a punch at her. He was big. She did not want to get hit by that fist. However, it was extremely warm out, and she wasn't sure how long she could keep his blows from hitting her; eventually, she would tire, and her footwork would suffer. That would not take very long.

Hime-san was screeching to the side, pointing at them both, his other hand balled up into a fist. Yue undid the ties on her meteor hammer, and prepared to wield it. If those punches got too close, it would be her only option. They were fighting... why? Over something seemingly stupid. Yue Lao was grumpy and warm, and this brute had tried to take her monkey. No one manhandled her lion tamarin but her.

And in an attempt to teach him some manners, Yue Lao would indeed battle it out with this stranger. She took a deep breath and prepared to fight him. Except even her thoughts were foggy, distorted by the heat in the air. It would be so nice to cool off... Yue glanced to the piers, and shook her head. She hated water, and swimming.

Instead, she said, "I don't even know your name," while she prepared her meteor hammer's momentum to try and take the stranger's feet out from under him.

The heat was oppressive and Bataar was already feeling lethargy setting in, despite the fact that he had certainly been the one to start this fight. It was as if his thoughts were swimming slowly through the heat, adding up to zero all the same. He set his lips into a tight line as he, too, tried to recall the reasoning behind this particular brawl. Nothing came, but he was going to fight it out, anyway.

He stifled a yawn as he attempted to figure out how best to next attack or evade Yue Lao. How was he supposed to evade her with a weapon like that, though? Agility was certainly not the captain's strength. He was, indeed, mountainous in stature and usually fine with taking blows but he didn't want that... that thing hitting him!

"My name's Bataar and I'm better than you." he declared, trying to act as haughty as he possibly could. It was probably an fairly ineffective way to go about things, but if he could delay through conversation, he was more than willing to. Although he'd thrown the first punch, he had to admit that it was just too much to fight in this damned heat. He required, above all, some relief and possibly some water.

Beyond that, he didn't want to use his sword. What if he chopped up the rat that he hoped to claim once Yue Lao fell into unconsciousness? "And uh, could you put that thing down?" He wasn't sure he'd stand a chance against those spikes, after all, and he simply didn't feel like trying to avoid them. That was, to be honest, too consumptive of energy. He hardly looking like a flitting little rodent, in any case-- it was clear that if this was going to continue Bat was going to get hit. Hard.

It seemed like her opponent was also rather affected by the heat. With all those furs on, she was not surprised. And she kept shifting her footing, because the smallest of breezes would blow his distinct musk towards her. Regardless for the reason they had started to fight, she did remember that she wasn't going to lose, and steeled herself for the experience.

The sun made her eyes hurt when she glanced up inadvertantly, catching the gleam of sun against her meteor hammer. She had never fought in the daytime like this, in such a small area. So she wasn't used to the reflective surface causing her problems. Yue Lao looked back at her opponent and tried not to let the shiny light distract her, even though it seemed to dance on the pier boards beneath them. She could see the water through the cracks, too, which made her queasy.

Yue Lao snorted. "Prove it, then, Bataar!" At first, Yue hadn't registered the name. But as she said it aloud, she realized who he was: Jianyu's ex. Her eyes narrowed briefly, but she didn't let slip that she knew who he was. He, assuredly, had never heard of her before. But she'd make this meeting one which was difficult to forget.

His request made her slightly speechless. He was reasonably, comparatively polite about it, and she didn't really want to hit any of the bystanders, so she listened and put the meteor hammer down, slowing its momentum to lower it, sliding the leather covers back on and putting it around her shoulder.

"So... if I have no weapon, what kind of fight is this?" Yue Lao asked, frowning, "Don't even think I'm going to agree to grapple with you, Bataar. The one and only Yue Lao does not want to smell like an alley forever."

The Mongolian man watched gratefully as Yue Lao put her weapon away and instantly felt better about the apparent throwdown that he was hoping would follow. The sun was, he felt, ruining his eyes and he glanced up at it, momentarily blinded by the shine. Unfortunately for Bataar, sunglasses were not in vogue and he’d just have to deal with the damage the light appeared to be dealing him. ”Can’t we do this when it’s cooler out?” he asked, his voice tinted with the hint of a whine. Never mind that Bataar Jaoret had been the one who had started all of this.

It was just that, well, he was beginning to drown in his own sweat. ”I mean, I am better than you.” he added, looking a little on the exhausted side as he began cracking his fists and then proceeding by rhythmically punching one into his palm. ”And there’s no better way to prove it than without weapons.” he added, his tone matter-of-fact. Yes, Bat rather liked that idea, especially because it would probably give his mountainous behemoth of a self an enormous advantage over the fighter in front of him.

And so, that being said, he threw another carefully-aimed punch at the girl, hoping it would hit home. He really hated when people avoided his punches, after all, and he needed to get this over with quickly so that he might be able to leave, get a cool drink, and maybe even steal the rat he’d fallen so in love with in a matter of a few minutes. Because, female or not, Bataar was fine with trying to beat up Yue Lao-- he was just that damned pleasant when it came to these things.

”Let’s just fight with our hands!”

Yue Lao could not fathom what exactly was going through the Behemoth's head. He seemed to want to fight her, mere moments ago, and now he was as lethargic and warm as she was. In fact, she was pretty sure that if the hulking Captain wanted to take a swing at her, he would fall over of heat exhaustion. He should probably drink some water... Come to think of it, when was the last time she had had any water?

Without realizing it, or seeing what was happening, Hime-san had scooped up the basket of fish Yue was supposed to deliver and carried it off himself, chittering angrily. If they could speak monkey, it would probably have been something like: Why do I have to be the responsible one all the time? Onlookers scattered and laughed at the cute monkey running through the pier and up towards Yowai's shop.

"I'm sure we can fight again when it's cooler-- but for different reasons," Yue said, "I'm not so bored that I need to come back here and fight you. Without a weapon. Again." She resisted the urge to then add how ridiculous a notion it was that she should fight without one in the first place. His statement that he was better than her pretty much did not affect her. After all, he looked so... soggy, and tired. In fact, she burst into laughter when he started to pound one fist against his palm. "You're better without weapons, I'm better with them; I recognize my weaknesses, and I compensate," Yue Lao replied, rolling her eyes over his logic.

Yue Lao did dodge the punch. Except she spun on a fish, and ended up rather close to the edge of one of the docks, so she had to jump onto the floating dock to avoid losing her balance. It was even more precarious than the pier had been, and she suddenly wondered about swimming lessons. And mourned having not taken them.

Bataar floundered a little as the heat pressed in upon him, shaking his head and grunting as if to clear his mind. They probably both looked like absolute idiots just standing around, perhaps waiting for a freakishly fast cold front to come along or something. He watched the monkey languidly, feeling that he was getting far more beat by the sun as opposed to killed by Yue Lao. That was, he supposed, pretty good considering that the sun was a bit of a badass contender. He might not even mind getting beat by the sun!

He looked ready to compromise and to agree with Yue Lao’s terms and nodded, probably looking quite as if he were about to keel over. ”It’ll be easy to find something else to fight you over.” he huffed, although he looked right now as if he thought that was only plausible if he were ever to budge during this damned heat wave. The Mongol appeared not to be quite as pleased when she mentioned that she would be using a weapon, but shrugged.

My weapon is only really useful for decapitation.” he pointed out, unsheathing his sword to demonstrate on some invisible passerby. ”So you’re lucky I don’t want to decapitate you right now.” he grinned, sheathing his sword again and placing his hands on his hips like some stern matron.

He had no choice but to jump on the floating dock right after Yue Lao, which seemed like an immensely good idea as all three tons of Bataar flew through the air but, upon landing, he came to the realization that most of his good ideas simply didn’t work out. That was mainly because the dock was now rocking madly below the two of them, ready to pitch them both off and, well, the captain couldn’t swim.

If Yue Lao could have heard Bataar's thoughts at that moment, she would have sincerely disregarded his ability to be a mentally stable opponent. More than she already had, anyway. His perception of the world seemed to operate on an entirely different plane. It made him both unpredictable and difficult to understand, at best. Which, in turn, made him a challenge; Yue Lao liked challenges. She tended to become preoccupied by them.

It was actually true that finding reasons to fight Yue Lao wasn't very difficult for most Nobles. She tended to infuriate, or at best, irritate every one of them she met. Occasionally it was mutual, mostly it was that she needled them unrelentlessly until she scored herself a fight. Yue Lao loved to fight. Not in the being-ambushed way, but a good, honest battle. If Bataar hadn't been so accursedly large, she would have agreed to fight him with no weapons. However, he would just crush her if he caught her, so that was no good.

Yue Lao raised her eyebrows. "Swords are good for many other things besides," she told him. After all, they could block her meteor hammer, if used properly. The cord was too thick to slice through easily, but perhaps it could be managed. She would have to see into that, at some point, as that could be disastrous.

Through the delusion of heat, as Bataar jumped onto the dock, her brain finally connected two and two: "You're Bataar," she said, "I had to sit with Jianyu all night after what happened." And Yue was about to try and take a swing at him, just for that, but she slipped: barelling straight into Bataar, Meteor hammer's weight included (though it was still wrapped around her shoulder, sheathed).

That water was extremely close. In fact, Yue seemed to be plunging right in.

Bataar’s thoughts were, indeed, nothing less than haphazard at best. They couldn’t have been further from the battle if he’d tried. There was just something about this heat that confused the thoughts of a perfectly intelligent man such as himself! In any case, he’d made it onto the dock without too much incident. All the same, he might as well have been a cat with how uncomfortable this had managed to make him, standing on a structure that was bobbing this much, swaying in order to keep his balance and his dignity intact.

”But they’re the best for decapitating.” he asserted, resisting from squirming in order to hide his utter discomfort. He had grown up among flat plains with the ocean never anywhere in sight-- and even lakes tended to be a stretch, seen fairly rarely. Water in and of itself was just unnatural in the Mongol’s opinion when it was involved in such large bodies. Then again, maybe it was the fact that he simply couldn’t swim that made these sorts of things such a put-off. He could drown after all-- just fall to the bottom like a rock and-- he didn’t want to think about it.

And so, having been already made a bit queasy by his proximity to the blue expanse now beneath him, it probably came as quite a shock when Yue Lao came flying towards him with some mention or other of Jianyu. Before he knew it they were both in the water and he was flailing, hanging onto the legionnaire for dear life as he prayed to Tengri not to drown. Drowning was not a manly sort of death, after all.

No one was remembered for drowning unless they’d purposely killed themselves, and Bat certainly didn’t want to do that!

Bataar's arm connected with something squishy and potentially bony on Yue Lao, she could not tell exactly where it had hit her, only that it hurt considerably. And instead of trying to breathe with her gills, she was gasping for air, filling her mouth up. Finally, in one frantic gesture, she lashed out at the Mongol with her feet, propelling herself away from his grabbing hands. Just because you're sinking doesn't mean I want to as well! Yue tried to communicate via glare. She was about to kick off and swim to the surface when she realized eh did not know how to swim. Thankfully, in the chaos of getting Bataar away from her, she had remembered her gills, and was now breathing comfortably. Still, she had nothing to do but flounder around stupidly as she sank.

At least the Mongol would sink faster, right? His size had to be useful for something. Yue Lao stared daggers at him, and would have tried to wield her meteor hammer, but she was having a depressing enough time sinking while watching him. How the hell would she even get out, anyway? Perhaps now was the time to learn how to swim. Tentatively, she tried kicking her legs a few times, but just sort of... scared some fish away, and nearly injured herself in the process.

Once, Yue Lao had been afraid of drowning. Then she realized she couldn't drown, so it didn't make any sense. She just needed to use her gills, instead of thinking with her lungs. It was a little odd that Lunarians had the capacity for aquatic and land survival. Yue was clearly worse off at one of them, though; as much as many Lunarians seemed to hearken towards fish, Yue was more partial to dragons, and she did not much enjoy watching Bataar and sinking down. She grabbed at a stray piece of slightly floating dock that had torn away and tried to hurtle it at Bataar.

It spun in the water pathetically and continued to float along harmlessly. Little fish were now nibbling at her bare toes. On the bright side, the stifling heat was less terrible.

Being part fish and all, you think he’d be pretty damned good at swimming, but that was hardly the case and the Mongol feared for his life as Yue Lao pulled away from him. She had been, as far as he was concerned, his last chance. Funnily enough, however, his head had yet to go beneath the water and as such his gills were rendered unnecessary. He flailed about a little more, trying to figure out why he hadn’t got twenty-- or maybe even sixty --feet down to the bottom.

Even Bataar was beginning to feel dim as he realized that he was standing and that the water was only up to his chest, lapping gently at him once he’d stopped his massive splashing. He stared at Yue Lao for a moment, too dumbstruck to speak and then, very slowly, trudged to the shore, feeling shaken and bedraggled. ”We’ll continue this fight later.” he declared pathetically, although he was starting to look(and smell) rather like a wet dog as his furs started to steam in the heat of the day. This hadn’t exactly been his moment, but he was willing to deal with the results mainly because he hadn’t drowned. Or gotten stuck below the water’s surface.

The captain sat down unceremoniously on a nearby crate and then began wringing out everything from his hair and his furs to his boots. Even as he began stripping down, he hoped that none of his clothing had gotten damaged by the water-- he did, after all, only own one set. Yue Lao was going to have to wait until another day if she wanted to feel his full wrath and fury, he reasoned, trying to pretend that he hadn’t just made an even bigger fool of himself through his evident fear for drowning.

Bataar Jaoret was going to live another day.
