Set before the meta cause I couldn't figure out another way to do it. Somehow (he wasn't sure how), Hank had ended up going with Metz over to Aunt Sun's house for tea and cakes, which quickly translated into the two moms chatting about people they knew in highschool and cooking and whatever else it was moms talked about. He was quite thankful when Aunt Sun told him that one of his cousins was home - Edmund- and he was out in the garden if Hank wanted to go and have a chat with him.
Hank excused himself and went outside, where he spotted Edmund across the yard messing with bags of mulch.
"Hey, Edmund. What's up?"

Edmund had heard that his Aunt Metz was coming over but his mother had given him permission to not be present and work on his garden instead. She didn't think his cousin Hank was coming along and she didn't want to bore him with their silly stories of the past.
That had been ok with him. His garden needed tending to especially since he was away all during the week. First on the list had been watering everything, which he'd accomplished already. Now he was stacking bags of mulch which he intended to put down after doing a bit of weeding. He looked up as he heard Hanks voice and then gave a soft smile to his cousin. Straightening up, Edmund wiped a bit of sweat off his forehead with his arm and then waved.
"Hey Hank. Nothing much, just trying to get a bit of work done out here while I'm home. You?"

Hank shrugged. "My mom brought me over and your mom gave me the opening to escape their nostalgic conversations when she told me you were home, so I decided I would come out and see what you were up to. Do you need any help? I can move those bags of mulch, if you'd like."
Hank strode over to Edmund. It was strange, they were of a height now, and Hank was threatening to overtop Edmund soon, probably because he was feral. Edmund had been so much older then him when Metz adopted him, and now they were, physically at least, the same age.
"Mom's still after me to move into the dorms but I haven't budged yet. And, I think I have a date with Adeline. Maybe."

Always more then happy to see his cousin, as well as have someone help him in his garden, Edmund gave Hank a soft smile. "Yeah sure I could use the help. If you just want to start spreading the mulch around over there where I've already weeded." Edmund gestured to a weed free patch of garden. He chuckled a bit about the dorms. "You know they're really not all that bad Hank. You don't have to be around a lot of people if you don't want to be, its a big campus."
Bending back down, Edmund resumed his weed pulling spree. "And that's great about Adeline. She seems like a really nice girl. Are you planning to take her out soon?" Edmund felt happy for his cousin, it seemed strangely rare for two metas to properly go out on a date. He knew his own first attempt at being in love had not ended so great for him, but he hoped things would go better for Hank.

Hank pulled his shirt off, picked up a trowel to help move the mulch and got to work. It wasn't often that he worked in the garden, even his secret orchard at home, which he preferred to let grow wild as long as the paths were clear. Still, he figured spreading mulch would be pretty easy. He kept it off the plants themselves, and tried to make sure there was an even covering.
"I just like my space, I guess. Yeah, I'm hoping to go out soon, I just want to figure out something nice. I don't have tons of spare cash and I think a fancy dinner would be kind of over the top. I don't know if it's a date date or a hanging out date, and I don't know what to suggest to her."

Making a thoughtful noise as he put a pile of pulled up weeds into a trash bag, Edmund considered what Hank said. He glanced over and was pleased to see that Hank seemed to be doing ok with putting the mulch down.
"Well I think you're right about the fancy dinner thing. I would think that should be saved for a little later if you go on some more dates. But I don't really know where you should take her...I guess to the movies or maybe bowling or something. That's what people normally do right? I guess I've never really been on a real "date" myself." He'd danced with a girl and spent times alone with her but they'd just been kids. Going out on real dates wasn't really an option for them at that point.
He tried not to think too much about it. It was still painful for him sometimes.
"Maybe you could get coffee...or if you really don't know, ask her if there was something she had in mind?"

Hank opened the bag of mulch wider and shifted around the flower bed to make sure the mulch covered everything it needed to. He was pretty impressed with Edmund's gardening. The only things he really cultivated were a few potted herbs in the kitchen window, because he preferred fresh leaves to dry when cooking. Metz had a cactus, as well, but that pretty much took care of itself.
"The other thing is, I don't think she's really comfortable going out to really public places. I think she was kind of startled that I thought she was beautiful. I guess people don't see past the snakes." Hank frowned at that. He didn't understand how all someone could see to Adeline was her snakey hair.
"So I'm thinking, maybe a picnic. I mean, I'm a decent cook and there are probably some nice places out in the park or the academy grounds we could go, and maybe I can figure out what she'd like to eat. But I don't know if a picnic with just the two of us would seem to personal. And I thought about asking Gavin his opinion, but . . . I don't think Gavin actually dates girls."

Edmund frowned a bit at what Hank had to say. Mainly because he too was at a loss for how people could only see Adelines snakes, but was well aware that her brother Theo probably had given her a complex about her looks. The talk of Gavin's....not so much dating girls was cause for him to frown as well. Edmund really didn't approve of Gavin's way of life. It seemed so empty and sad to Edmund.
"That's really sad that Adeline feels that way. I know Gavin has mentioned that Theo thinks she's a freak. That's probably enough to give her a complex right there. As for Gavin...." Edmund paused at a particularly stubborn weed. He gave a soft grunt of effort as it finally came free. "Dating isn't exactly what he does with girls. That being said, he probably has a good idea of what spots are good or not. I wouldn't put too much stock in much else he says unless you're intending to..." Edmund trailed off a bit with a blush.
"I think a picnic sounds like a good idea though. I don't think it seems too personal. Would require a lot of talking though I think, which could be hard for a first date. I don't really know though."

"You're right. It'll be really isolated if we do a picnic and then if it gets awkward their won't be any relief from other people. Although I could just text her and ask her what she though. I guess that's what she gave me her phone number for, after all."
Hank had never been out on a date before, on rarely going out even with just a few guys. He was more of a homebody, at heart.
"What if she thinks this isn't even supposed to be a date? What if it's just that she's going out with a friend? I mean, I'm not even sure if this is supposed to be a date or not."
Hank tried not to let his concern take over his thoughts, but it tended to. He groped for different topic of conversations, but he couldn't come up with much.
"Does Aunt Sun know about Gavin's extra curricular activities in town?"

Edmund could tell that Hank was a little stressed about the whole date with Adeline thing. He could understand it was kind of a big deal when you liked someone. Hank probably wanted everything to go perfectly.
"I think you shouldn't worry about it too much Hank. You'll probably be able to figure out if she thinks its a date or not by how she acts. Just be yourself. You're nice and polite so... it'll be fine."
Edmund gave consideration to Hank's next question as it wasn't something he knew the answer to right away.
"I'm not totally sure actually. Mom has a way of knowing things and not letting on sometimes. She's not one to meddle too much unless she thinks one of us is really doing something wrong. I don't really agree with what Gavin does but... I think she thinks its his own decision. Besides... I think we all knew Gavin would be a little well... wild I guess. I don't really understand it myself though..."

"I'm wondering if it is safe for him to do this, going out all the time. I mean, he kind of sticks out, what with the wings and all. And I don't know how, um, tactful he's being."
Hank was concerned about Gavin's wellbeing when he went out, but he was also concerned about how his actions might affect the other meta kids. What if Adeline wanted to go dancing and he took her and then some of the humans wanted to start something because of Gavin's actions?
"And I wonder if he's happy."

Edmund gave a heavy sigh at what Hank was saying. All of it sounded really true to him though he couldn't be sure since he didn't spend a lot of time out around the humans. He tossed some weeds into a trash bag before speaking.
"I don't really know to be honest.... Gavin has always had a way with people though. I know that's one of his powers. I think it's likely Gavin would get himself out of any troublesome situations that could come up because of what he does." He gave a pause before confronting the more heavy of statements Hank had said. Edmund sat back and drawing his knees up and resting his arms on top of them, he peered at Hank.
"You know I suspect he really isn't. I don't see how he could be, it must be such an empty way to live. I think sometimes when he doesn't think I notice, he looks....well sad isn't quite the right word. But I think sometimes the Gavin we see all the time isn't totally the real Gavin."

"Gavin spends so much time putting on a show. It is hard to imagine what's going on behind the scenes. But I guess it's up to him, in the end."
Gavin was always flashy. Hank figured it had to make him at least kind of happy, otherwise he wouldn't do it. But Gavin's issues were his own.
"What about you, Edmund? Anything interesting going on in your life? Aside from wrangling with your siblings."

Edmund tilted his head thoughtfully at Hank's question. He was having trouble thinking of anything of much interest going on in his life at the moment. He wasn't sure what that said about him being a healthy teenager but he didn't really have any big complaints about his unexciting life either.
"I don't know how much I actually wrangle with them...more just give them advice when they ask for it and hope they make better choices in the future." Edmund chuckled a little. "I can't say I have much going on though myself." He scratched behind his head. "I spend most of my time in my garden and hanging with Aiden and my family... I guess I should get out more and meet more people...." He said the last bit quietly, thinking about it made him feel a bit shy. "Be nice to have a potential date set up like you do." Dating wasn't something Edmund had worried much about, but he did really want to find someone to fall in love with at some point.

Hank continued to pat down the mulch, spreading evenly. He wanted to do a decent job in Edmund's garden, since it was so important to his cousin.
"Happenstance, I think, is all that got me talking to Adeline. So, you never know, it might be you just have to bump into the right person. Maybe there will be another dance or party, you know? Some times things just fall into place, without you worrying about it. Or even if you do worry about it. I know I worried about it."
Hank had worried about Adeline more than he would like to admit to anyone, even to Edmund, a reliable guy if there was one.
"Actually, I would bet you five bucks that you will have a real relationship with someone before Gavin does. Five solid bucks."
