Infinity, created by Spanish firm Corvus Belli, is a skirmish battle system involving around 6-10 models per side, d20 stat system and cyberpunk/animesque setting. I know no other game that has battle hackers for example...
I've started to be interedted as I've scanned the net for an alternative to GW monopoly. It was remarkably similar in the skirmish aspect to Necromunda, but it was also appealing to my esthethic sense, and the rules were very good on the side of lethality. Basic rifles mind you , fire 3 round bursts, and basic infantry has armor values of around 1 which means against damage of 13 - again, basic rifle - it takes a d20 roll of 13 or more to save your a**. And there is no to wound/to save distinction! Even mighty TAGs (tactical assault gears - think Terminator-like battlesuits, often remotely piloted instead of manned) do have reason to hug cover, especially since many models do pack AP rounds just to crack their thick armor.
After a demo game in my local wargaming store, I've decided to jump onto the bandwagon and ordered my starter box - the faction is Bakunin Nomads, an anarchic society of outcasts travelling the universe in vast ship, always opposing the seemingly omnipresent AI , the Aleph. They do pack some potent hackers, high tech troops with optical disruption devices making them harder to hit, and some of the most bizzarre troops and weapons, from human/animal hybrids to glue guns capable of immobilizing TAG or heavy infantry, to the "crazy koalas" - small robotic care bears that tend to explode in enemy's face...

Well, going back to the Infinity!
My ordered starter box has arrived, and gosh, the sculpts are beautiful, if somewhat infested with flash. Gonna do photos soon. Probably.
Anyway, lets start with presentation of the factions:

User Image
Pan-Oceania - Forging together countries of Australia, India and South America, plus multitude of smaller islands, it has also incorporated what remains of former powers of US and Europe. It is greatest industrial might and controls most of the planets, and has tendency to enforce its will just a bit too much. It's society is multicultural, yet well organised and has inherited most of the Western traditions.
Focus - ranged combat, TAGs - weak points - morale.
That is until they started to resurrect Knightly Orders who are all melee-oriented heavy infantry with Religious trait making them immune to most of the morale effects... And they even got their own specialized army list.
They also got a specially manufactured re-creation of Jeanne D'Arc to lead them. Badass girl with big sword FTW!

Ok, so continuing with factions:

User Image
Yu-jing - the biggest rival to the Pan-O, a centralised empire combining China and conquered Japan, that still provides some of best tech.
Focus: melee, heavy infantry.
Weak side: costly troops.
Nice perk: Ninjas in thermooptical camo! (GITS fans rejoice!)
Second most powerful economic force in the universe, Yu-jing is ruled by the iron fist of the emperor and his Imperial Services. Japanese, while reduced to second grade citizenry, are used as expendable shock troops. Reports are though of mysterious rebels known as Kempeitai trying to restore Japan's independence and assassinating officers throwing nipponese soldiers away too casually...
There are also rumors of ninjas - stealthy assasins with high tech weapons. Of course they are mere rumors, and now somebody move away this body with a shuriken in the middle of his head, it ruins the sight of my stone garden... ninja

I rather enjoy the simple and clean looks of the models for Aleph.

...or is that the sexiness of the fembots? razz
User Image

Anyway, continuing with the factions, onto the Haqqislam...

User Image
Literally translated as new islam, faction takes our stereotypical fanatics and turns them around 180 degrees... After serious humanistic reformation movement, Islam became true religion of peace, and its adherents are famous for being doctors and eco-terraformers without peer.
They also happen to be sole producers of the Silk, rare substance needed for the process of technical resurrection of people using saved memories and cloned bodies. Not surprisingly that makes them quite rich, despite controlling only one of 12 planets colonised by man.

In the game beattlefield, their main advantage is high willpower, and many religious troops, and relatively cheap light infantry. Weakness includes few heavy infantry and only one TAG - but what a model it is! Spider tank that makes more than passing ressemblence to the one from GITS...

A nice perk is in the form of Hassassins, whose specialization range from impersonating enemy and using melee, thru explosives use to sniping with viral ammo.

Last but not least needs mention Avicenna - ALEPH in an effort to influence great powers, has sent them re-incarnations of famous historical figures, and Avicenna, as a symbol of healer's skill (and known to enjoy life's pleasures) was chosen for Haqqislam. Haqqislamites were somewhat suspicious and they gave the new arrival to the mad Bakunin scientists for examination... The loonies from Praxis Black Labs removed his pro-ALEPH conditioning, and just for fun placed him in a female body. Hilarity ensued. Avicenna is now on the run, but enjoying his/her life as much as possible...

... I'm starting to think i'd better get that game .... cool

continuing with smaller powers...

User Image
Ariadna is somewhat similar to Haqqislam in being in control of only one planet, and having access to valuable resource - in that case metal called Teseum... which happens to be extremely useful for ap ammo and blades.

Ariadna itself is a "lost colony" of the first interstellar ship - it was sent away but second ship exploded collapsing the wormhole (and ruined most of the countries involved) and the colony remained in isolation for a long time... The ships military was based on US, UK, French and Russian spec forces, and it shows in the composition of the forces...

focus: physical strength, ap ammo, scouts and stealth
also melee in the form of Scottish SAS descendants
weakness - no high tech - but their heavy inf cant be hacked!
nice perk - native canine alien predators can be tamed, and have infected some colonists with something akin to lycanthropy...

Aleph has sent them none other than reenacted William Wallace! But truly to his nature he stopped responding to orders soon after arrival.

edit: uploaded starter set pic for each faction covered to date

continuing with final human faction, the Nomads...

User Image

strangest human faction, it encompasses various misfits of the Humanity that didnt want to become part of any of the "great nations".
They travel the space in 3 giant spaceships not unlike the craftworlds.
Corregidor, a former prison ship, is now prime source of highly trained mercs and specialist workforce alike, especially for zeroG space jobs.
Tunguska is a tech center above all, with the famous Interventor hackers and Szalamadra TAGs
Finally Bakunin is a weird place where pretty much anything is if not legal then obtainable from the underground duelling rings for cyber-furries, thru Praxis Black Labs "no limits" research experiments, to most advanced porn available. Did I mention drugs? Add to this few truly devout revolutionnary anti-ALEPH movements, foremost is "St Mary of the Knife Order" - a split-off from RCC that believes ALEPH is Devil incarnated, and you get the picture... "One night in Bakunin" might make you mad razz

In game terms their focus is high-tech - second only to ALEPH, medium infantry rivalling the heavy infantry of other powers, REMs (remotes, aka drones - in forms 4-legged, bipedal or even flying) - and best hackers in the Human sphere, save perhaps ALEPH.
Weak point is general lack of heavy infantry, and mediocre troop stats not focusing in any area.

If there's one thing I don't like its that they give female models less than effective armour in comparison to their male counterparts and have them show waaaaay too much skin.

next faction is not human at all!

User Image
the ALEPH is a huge AI running everything from the Maya - think internet on interstellar scale - to navigation of trading megaships and trading exchanges
it has allied itself to Humanity, at least officially, but who knows what is its real goal? Nomads say it seeks total dominance and abhor it...

on tabletop, ALEPH has high-overall-stats units and lots of high-tech, with emphasis on REM(otes) as even basic troops
it also employs many humanoid cyborg bodies hosting its aspects - basically , partial copies focused on a task.
its main weakness is cost of models and as result low numbers

and they might seem fragile those fembots, but with Teseum armor under that synskin they are tougher than our ORC trooper - anonymous Pan-O Fusillier

Factions: final part - Combined Army
This faction is not human, nor even man-made AI, it's the Aliens!
No, not the ones that Ripley fought with... though one species looks similar...
Combined Army, as the name suggests, is an amalgm of alien forces led by the extremely advanced Evolved Intelligence that sees humans as another race to enslave... erm, join for greater good razz
In game terms they are diverse and tend to specialize much depending on species (yay for bad pun!), with warlike Morat as mainstay troops.
Their tech is so advanced even best human hackers have trouble doing much, but the price tag in points is high. Plus plasma guns are renowned as most destructive tech in the tabletop!
What little weakness is left is the overspecialization might leave them vulnerable once some element of the force is eliminated enemy can utilize that as an opening to dismantle entire team.
Nice perk: ability to infect and posses human troops via their "Cube" interface - with exception of most Ariadna troops (and some selected units from other factions) that simply did not have the tech implanted yet.
