Today was calm.

Finally, after the flurry of activity that had enveloped Amityville over the last month or so, things seemed to be slowing down considerably, just in time for West's trip home. He was only visiting his parents for a week, but frankly that was as much as he thought he could stand. His last school hadn't been the sort one slept at, and he found the freedom he had enjoyed these past seven months to be something he... cherished, for lack of a less ghouly word. West had learned that he felt infinitely better when he wasn't under the thumbs of Duran and Zira Warrick and especially without the constant reminder of Duerre. Being reminded of her forty percent of the time for no good reason at all was more than enough.

He had asked Yaya to stop by his room today very reluctantly, and if she had refused, he hadn't heard, having hung up on her as soon as he asked. West had something he wanted to give her, and right now seemed as good a time as any. Actually, he didn't want to leave campus without at least offering it to her, in case his train crashed and he was holed up reconstituting his FEAR for months or something. West wanted her to know that he meant what he had said. He would be there. Just because he had decided now was the time didn't mean he was looking forward to it.

Over the past few months, West's room had gone from clean and stark to thoroughly lived in, but at the moment it was back to pristine. He had spent the better part of the past few days cleaning, much to the chagrin of several of the nerdier students around campus who made easy targets after he couldn't figure out how to use a washing machine. There was no way he would have brought his laundry home, not with all the sand that had accumulated in his sheets. Questions would be raised, questions he didn't want to answer.

A chittering sound issued from underneath his bed, quickly followed by the emergence of a slow, green blob of an animal. The armassum trundled off toward the door, dropping to a seat when he got there. He raised stubby claws and looked back at West.

"Don't y'dare."

Lord Jerkwater turned back around and began to scratch at the doorframe.

With a disgruntled growl, West stomped over to his door, heaving it open and glaring down at the minipet. "Y'happy?" he snarled, aiming a kick at the creature that missed as Lord Jerkwater hurried out into the hall as quickly as he could manage.

It had been a very very brief phone call, no more then half a minute, and constituted entirely of her answering, being summoned to Westus' room, then promptly being hung up on. To nearly any other person it would have seemed a rude, demanding sort of gesture, but Hadiyya knew better, so it was with a bemused sort of smile she set aside her packing to make her way into the halls and up down to the avarice demon's dorm. The henna dyed tips of her fingers trailing the walls along the way.

She was stopped about about half way to her destination by the appearance of an adorably lumpy figure waddling it's way towards her and she couldn't help but laugh as she bent to greet the armassum as it approached her. Scratching fondly behind one twisted horn before parting that green snout. "Jerky, what are you doing out here?" Tucking hands behind stumpy legs, she picked the squat beasty up and cradled him in her arms. "Have you been pestering our dear West?" Always, but thanks to her the pair of armassum were manageable and fairly well behaved. It wasn't their fault they were owned by a boil with a short temper.

Lord Jerkwater still in her arms, the djinn walked the remainder of the hall until she came to West's door. Knuckles rapping along the wood to announce her presence. "He's still home, right Jerky?" The armassum's round tummy was given a tickle as she cooed down at it, chuckling faintly before turning her attention back to the door before her.

She hadn't the foggiest why he'd wanted to see her. Jack, it was baffling that he'd even gone out of his way to call her over. That wasn't the way the boil operated, not usually. She was glad for it though. Happy for a chance to see one of her closest friends before they all went off for the summer. She herself was going to be staying with Sharra and his family for the whole of their break, and she was very excited. Finally she would meet the doting, over bearing aunties that played such a key role in their dear nephew's life.

Having just closed the door behind his pet not long before Yaya's knock, West still had his hand on the doorknob and simply turned it and yanked the thing open again in response to her tapping.

"Good, yer here," he said, eyes narrowing at Jerkwater's rapid return. The armassum was the picture of excellent behavior in the marid's presence, as always. West was well aware that all of his pets had the capability to behave themselves, and they did most of the time, but it seemed that when they got the urge to, he was still their favorite demon to prank.

"I'm, uh, goin' home soon an' I wanted t'talk 'bout somethin'." He waved her inside, peering up and down the hall after her before shutting the door. West was strangely subdued, but his scowl remained. Whether it was for the armassum or in anticipation of whatever he wanted to talk to Yaya about wasn't clear.

Glowing eyes widened as the door opened before she'd even lowered her hand again, and she was left staring at West's perpetually grumpy face. "Well hello to you, too," offered with a smirk, following his gaze down to the pet in her arms. Fingertips tracing soft scratches behind one gnarled horn then down along Jerk's chin as he rose his head into her touch, churring happily at the rare affection.

She passed him as he waved her inside, then chuckled as he peered around in the hallway before closing the door to face her. "Oh?" It wasn't often the avarice demon actually sought her out to talk, so the marid was admittedly very curious as to the nature of this impending conversation. And it would have to be important, or else West wouldn't have even bothered with it. In the entire span of their friendship they had only had a small handful of serious conversations, but somehow Hadiyya felt that was more then West usually allowed himself with a person.

Taking a seat on the edge of the foot of his bed, she set the armassum down on the bed beside her where it immediately curled against her hip, staring up at her for further attention. She stroked a hand along his back and tail before resuming the soft scratches along the base of his hand. One long, dark leg rose to cross over the other, and she set her free hand on her lap as she glanced back up at the other demon. "What's up?"

West didn't sit. He took three slow steps toward his window, then turned and took two back. His hands slid into his jacket pockets, pants pockets, jacket pockets, no pockets as his arms crossed across his chest. The movements weren't hasty or impatient. It seemed more like the boil was just trying to waste time.

"Um."

He pulled out his desk chair and finally took a seat, spending the next thirty seconds arranging his feet between the chair's wheels and the floor. West sat back, his gaze finally finding Yaya again. He didn't roll his eyes, but he really, really wanted to.

Feelings and seriousness. They were super dumb.

"So, uh, we're friends, right?"
PostPosted: Tue Aug 23, 2011 10:25 am

Softly glowing blue eyes trailed the demon boil as he paced and made that fidgety cycle with his hands from pockets to pockets, a single dark brow arching high with every passing second. What in Jack's name had gotten him in such a flustered state? Hadiyya had no idea, and she remained quiet all the while as she waited for him to make the next move.

When he finally did sit she took her hand from his pets head to fold it along with the other ontop of her lap, the picture of nonthreatening patience. Even as he continued to shuffle his feet beneath him as if no matter how he sat it wasn't comfortable. Considering the boil and his reactions to things like feelings, it wasn't surprising. She wasn't 100% sure on if that was what was on his mind, but it was a fair assumption.

His question caught her off guard and bright eyes widened slightly in response to it before softening. He had no idea just how happy she was to hear him say something like that, having only just recently realized that they were indeed still friends and he didn't in fact hate her for having marked him.

"Of course we are," she answered happily after a second. Curiosity making her lean forward just a little.

He nodded sharply, as if her verbal confirmation was all he needed to keep speaking. But... it really wasn't.

Before coming to Amityville, West could have counted the number of people he truly trusted on one hand, with at least a finger to spare. One of those few had betrayed him so deeply he would never forgive her. One of the others was his uncle. It didn't seem right that after only nine months, he would be giving his trust to someone new. If she responded negatively, well, he would just have to deal with that when it happened.

Instead of troubling himself by finding words for what he wanted to say, the boil rose to his feet again. He quickly bridged the space between them and dropped heavily onto the bed to the side of the marid not occupied by his pet. He grabbed her hand, grasping it like he was going to shake, then turned his wrist and rested their clasped hands on the mattress between them. West placed his other hand on top of hers. There was a brief spark, and when he let go, his emblem rested in her palm. It was small and dark, save for the bright pattern on its face, and it had a surprising number of scratches on it for something that had only been created moments before.

"Here," he said unceremoniously. "Don't say I never gave y'nothin'."

West waited for her to respond, a childish vulnerability scrawled across his face for a second until he clenched his jaw and it was gone.

He felt like he was going to puke.

He nodded and she waited, but after a moment or two of silence dark brows lowered in a soft pinch. Whatever it was he'd called her hear was not something he felt all that comfortable speaking about, it was painfully obvious to the ghoul, and had he not called her she'd have let the whole thing go. Westus flustered was amusing, but this was a level of uncomfortable awkwardness Yaya had never witnessed. She'd have gladly let him off the hook if she could.

Instead she waited patiently for him to work up whatever it was he needed in order to move on with the conversation. Glowing eyes dropping back to linger upon the minipet curled along her hip staring up at her, as if he might shed some form of light upon the situation. There were no answers in those dopey eyes though, not that she had really expected there to be.

When he stood she looked up again, confusing hinted within exotic features as he came to sit beside her, then growing as he took her hand in his. Generally he avoided physical contact when possible, though with he he was surprisingly tolerant. It was never him that reached out to other people, so this was surprising. She didn't fight him though, but let him pull her hand around to lay on the bad between them, the delicate point of her chin tilting curiously to one side as she stared down at their clasped hands. Baby blues flicking up once to glance at his face before dropping again. What was he doing?

The shock was, well.. shocking. Hadiyya jumped as it tingled through her hand and had to fight herself not to simple jerk away from him. The obvious question was written all over her face as she stared up at him, but any words to voice it died behind parted lips as she felt the warm curve within her palm. He let her go, and she lifted her hand, fingers opening slowly to reveal the emblem within. "Oh." It was not an adequate portrayal of her thoughts nor emotions, but right then words had failed her.

He'd given her his emblem, a huge mark of trust between one person and another, and she could do little in the next few seconds save stare down at it with budding start of smile showing on plush lips. Moisture glittered in glowing eyes as she finally looked up at him, and even knowing he'd hate it she closed that gap between them in an instant to throw arms around him in clinging hug. Words couldn't cover how pleased she was by the emblem clutched tightly in her hand, only actions would cover it.

Oh. Well, that was it then. He'd made a fool of himself and things had gone about as well as he'd expected they would. West sighed softly and looked away. Never again. He'd said that about so many things around this place, but he meant it this time. He rested his palm on the bed, intending to push himself to his feet, but he was stopped in his tracks by a swiftly moving Yaya barreling into his side. He looked down at her and rolled his eyes briefly, his lips twitching upward at their corners. He could only assume the slight watery cast to her eyes was the result of happiness, given the whole hugging thing, and a faint scoff-chuckle followed the eyeroll.

"Yaya..." His grin widened even as he tried to keep his features neutral. "Don't cry'r I'll take it back." West gave her back the faintest pat, then held still, waiting for her to disengage herself again. Now the only question was, would she return the gesture? He supposed he would have to accept it if she didn't want to, but he really didn't like the idea of being put in that position in the first place. The happiness he had felt in response to her reaction seemed to shrivel up and limp away just as quickly as it had arrived, and the smile that had been so difficult to wipe from his face a moment ago faded easily.

"So, yeah, that's it. That's all I called y'for. Jus'... wanted t'get it done before I went home."

Her grip on the emblem tightened at the threat despite her knowing full well he wouldn't really take it away from her for crying on his shoulder. It did help staunch the tears though, and after a moment she would loosen her grip on the boil so she was more or less draped against him as he explained himself. Dark features sobering by the second as that wide grin faded away from handsome features. Why? She didn't understand the thoughts behind the sudden change in expression, it hurt to see it. He seemed wounded, but nothing in the last few moments should have warranted that sort of reaction from the boil. "West?"

She swallowed as she looked up at him, a sad little idea worming unhappily through her mind. Perhaps he regretted giving his emblem to her, as he'd regretted letting her mark him. That it'd seemed the appropriate thing to do, but now that he had he wanted to take it back.. Jack, she hoped not. Slowly she let him go, one hand retreating to her lap, but only to place the dark little circle safely on her thigh before returning up so she could cup her palm against his cheek. "You didn't have to so this," she offered softly, vulnerability clear in faintly glowing eyes.

The tips of her fingers curled along the edge of his jaw as she leaned forward, and before he could pull away or protest she pressed a lingering kiss to his cheek, then dipped her chin so she could rest her brow against his temple. "You know how much you mean to me, don't you?" Did he? Had she ever thought to tell him? No, she'd always just assumed he'd understood from her actions.

The hand still resting on his shoulder slid until she could touch fingertips against the left side of his chest. Even through clothing the fluid wash of cool liquid was obvious, but as she let her hand drop away there was no water staining his clothing. Only the dark silhouette of a circle beside the lapel of his jacket. Intricate blue nearly glowing in thin lines across the surface in the shape of a water drop. "I was going to give you this months ago, but at the time.." She paused, and the press of her fingers along the edge of his jaw tightened, holding him in place. "I thought you hated me, and I wouldn't have blamed you." She lay her hand atop the emblem on her thigh, curling her fingers so she could press it into her palm.

The night they'd returned from the field trip and she'd released the boil from the mark she'd placed upon him. She'd been convinced she'd lost him as a friend, that he'd stuck around only because of her hold on him and his freedom would prove the end of their friendship. Of the people she called friend or more, there were only three she had come to love, would do anything for, and the avarice demon was there along with Sharra and Junko.

West averted his gaze in response to her silence, not looking back even when she addressed him by name. He told himself he didn't want to see her getting up to leave, or even smiling up at him, but he almost turned his head anyway when she briefly let him go. If she left... He grit his teeth and didn't move, sighing softly when she leaned close once more.

As she spoke again, hand rising to touch his face, a small part of him thrashed violently in protest. He glanced down at her then, too preoccupied with keeping his blind panic under control to truly comprehend what she was saying. Still, he understood the look of relieved apprehension in her eyes. His own squeezed shut as she kissed his cheek.

You know how much you mean to me, don't you?

Yeah, he'd heard her loud and clear that time. The silence stretched on for quite a while before he responded.

"I didn't hate you... I don't. I won't." Really there was very little she could do at this point that would make him abandon her completely. He had been shown plenty of affection over the past two years, but in retrospect, little of it meant anything in comparison to this moment. This was uncomfortable and wonderful. She trusted him. West reached up to run his fingers across her intricately decorated pin, happiness evident in his eyes even though the rest of his features remained stoic. His other arm hooked back around her waist as he gave her a gentle squeeze. "Thanks."

He was quiet, even after she'd she'd admitted how terribly much she cared and kissed his cheek. For a fleeting second it was a terrifying silence, but as each passing tick of the clock passed it grew less and less strained until they were merely sitting quietly together with her still draped against him. One dark hand lingering at the edge of his jaw as she kept them pressed close. Moving only once he'd spoken again, and only enough to rest her forehead on his shoulder, relief washing through her with enough force to leave fingers tingling and numb. He'd never hated her, never so much as disliked her, and though she felt silly for having assumed it, it was such a weight of her mind that she just didn't care.

Through half lidded eyes she watched him trace the edge of her emblem with his fingers, and she lifted her head to peer up at him through a veil of dark bangs, full lips curling into a peaceful smile.

Then he did something unexpected, and the ghoul nearly jumped, startled, buy the simple act of him curling a hand around her waist in a single armed hug. It made her still against him, scared to move for fear he'd retreat away from her, 'least til he murmured a 'thanks' beside her ear. It made her grin, but she hide it by laying her brow back against his shoulder. The softest of chuckles raising up from her seconds later. "You're very welcome."

Finally she let her hand slip away from his face, lowering it to rest lightly against his arm. It wouldn't last, she knew it wouldn't, but for the moment she was content to enjoy this closeness with someone who rarely allowed it. She had to wonder why he put up with her. Her clinging, her completely shameless behavior, all of it. The question was on the tip of her tongue, but she didn't ask it. Not now.

She was right; neither the peaceful serenity nor the touching would last. West began to fidget, and soon he was pulling away from Yaya and rising to his feet. "Yeah," he sighed. "Never done that b'fore." He chuckled once, the brief laugh coming out as more of a puff of air through his nose. "But dun tell anyone that." His words weren't a threat, more like a request. "I'm, uh, glad y'gave me yours too."

He sat on the edge of his desk, his arms loosely folding across his chest. "Have y'been home yet?" he asked, quickly changing the subject. "I'm goin'..." he paused as if he didn't know when the carriage was coming for him, but of course he did. It was one of the only things that remained on his mind now that this was done. "...tomorrow." He hadn't even spared a thought for what being a Knob might be like, so consumed were his thoughts by the prospect of a visit home, his first since being torn apart by Savior. "I'should prob'ly pack." Translation: please leave.
PostPosted: Fri Nov 18, 2011 3:51 pm

When the fidgeting started she she suppressed a quiet chuckle and loosened her grip on him, preparing for him to pull away. She knew it was coming, it really was only a matter of time before the touchy feeliness got to be too much. When he stood she returned her hands to her lap, scooping up the emblem she'd been balancing on her thigh, and squeezed it into her palm with a happy smile.

His comment caught her a little off guard though, and she blinked up at him, chin tilting. "Never? But sure Holly of Levi.." She had assumed both the other ghouls would have had it by now considering how close they all seemed. Apparently she'd been wrong. It made her glance down at the little circle in her hand again, a little in awe. She was the first to have it, of anyone. "Wow." Another stellar response of epic proportions, but again, she was shocked and extremely touched. She'd known they were friends, known he cared, but she never would have imagined this.

"I won't tell," she assured him after a moment, looking up again with eyes gone a little misty. She wasn't going to cry again, but damn was she close. She didn't bother telling him how much all of it meant to her, it had to be rather obvious by the look on her face. "You're the second the for me." The first should be obvious, but it should still mean something that none but those two had her emblem.

The change of topic was both expected and surprising, but she took it in stride. "No, not yet." And she wouldn't be any time soon, either. She wasn't avoiding home, she had no reason to, she just had somewhere else to go. She took the hint when it was presented, and rose to her feet, moving casually towards the door, but paused when she neared him. "Thanks again." A kiss was pressed to the top of his head between his horns, fingers sliding through the brightness of his hair as she continued towards the door. "And yes, probably. I'll leave you to it."

She stopped with her hand on the knob, glancing back at him over her shoulder as if waiting to see if he had anything else to add before she left him alone.

Despite his nervousness over this meeting and the personal uncertainty he'd just cracked open by even mentioning going home, West couldn't help the small smile that lifted his lips at the threat of her tears. Second only to Sharra, eh? Interesting. He accepted her kiss without comment, rising to his feet as she passed him on her way out of his room.

"See ya when I get back," he said, moving to catch the door and close it behind her. His grin remained even as his uncharacteristic expression was exposed to the hall.

No matter what ended up happening during the rest of it, today was a good day.
