User ImageOphelia draped herself on the brick edge of the fountain. She laid on her side, her elbow propping herself up a little. Her free hand grazed the clear water as she hummed a little melody. Distracted, she counted the multitude of coins that coated the bottom of the large fountain in the town's square. Smiling, she thought of how many wishes had been fulfilled. Lifting up her hand, she let the water settle a little and looked at her reflection for a moment. Still humming the same tune, she pulled her headphones to her shoulders. She knew the rest of the song at this point and resumed playing with the water. The sun was out and shining today, and the gentle heat warmed her bare skin. Absent-mindedly, she picked up one of the coins, watching how it glistened brightly in the sunlight.

For a moment, she stopped humming and thought aloud, "I wonder what wish this one was?" before resuming the song from where she left off, still gazing at the coin and turning it back and forth.

While Riba tried to stay huddled up in her dorms, hunched over her desk to study, she could not resist the allure of the town that comfortably surrounded the academy. Despite the distance, her senses still filled with the savory scents of bread and other delectable pastries. Most likely she was exaggerating, but the smells overloaded her thoughts and mind, filling it only with the burning desire to vacate the school grounds and seek out delicious snacks to nibble on. Her nose twitched as she blankly stared at the worksheet placed in front of her. A frustrated sigh. She grasped the desk’s edge and pushed herself away. Studying was no use right now.

The first thing she did as soon as she entered the town was to make a beeline for the nearest bakery. It did not matter which specific bakery she entered—Riba figured that all of the bakeries in town were excellent. To her delight, she procured a bag of cookies—even cut in fish shapes, just as she liked it. One arm steadily held onto the bag while the other brought a cookie to her lips. Riba idly strolled through town before settling on sitting at the fountain’s edge. She glanced over at the woman next, donned in white and a large pair of headphones hanging around her neck. The woman leaned down to pick up a coin from the fountain.

“You know, I think you should put that coin back. What if the wish doesn’t come true?” Riba had no clue how that worked, only that throwing a coin into a fountain meant you could make a wish—whether or not it came true was a mystery.

Ophelia was startled by the voice near her. While it wasn't exactly harsh, she felt like she was being scolded and dropped the coin back into the fountain. Chuckling nervously, she turned to sit up properly and face the girl who spoke. "I'm sure it will come true either way" she said, sitting stiff as a board, "...right?" she added cautiously. She sure hoped so. What if she just crushed someone's dream in that one little instant! No, it was too much to think about.

"Have you ever made a wish in a fountain?" she asked, trying to change the subject without being too obvious. The reaper was never fond of being in trouble. Not that anyone would be...But she hated it like it was a plague.

Smiling back at the girl, she remembered to introduce herself. "My name is Ophelia, by the way."

The older woman appeared startled by Riba’s sudden remark, causing her to promptly drop the coin. Riba’s glowing blue eyes, wide as usual, casually watched the gleaming object plunge back into the clear, rippling waters with a soft plop. Gaze never breaking away from Ophelia, Riba reached into her bag of cookies for another fish-shaped treat and took a small bite. “Maybe. Then again, maybe not.” She shrugged.

At the reaper’s inquiry, Riba leaned over to peer into the fountain’s waters. Despite the ripples, she managed to make out her fuzzy reflection as well as the promising collection of coins huddled at the bottom. “No, not that I can remember. My town didn’ have fountains to wish in. Dun think I would’ve, either. Too busy.” Another shrug.

She acknowledged the introduction with a nod and a grin. “I’m Riba.” The witchling held out her bag of cookies, a motion that was natural and sincere. “Would you like a cookie?”

Ophelia smiled and thanked the girl, Riba, as she reached into the bag for a cookie. "Busy with what?" she asked, before popping the treat into her mouth. She munched on it, savoring the sweet taste and mentally noting it among her list of acceptable treats.

Ophelia herself has made more fountain wishes than she could count. And for all manner of things. Grades, her parents' happiness, a boyfriend, the list goes on and on. Needless to say, most of them didn't come true, but the reaper felt it was worth trying. Each and every time.

Forcing her attention back to the witchling, she wondered, "What -would- you have wished for, if given the chance?"

“Helpin’ out at the farm an’ the restaurant.” It took Riba a few moments to realize that her answer was probably too vague for the reaper. “My parents own a small farm as well as a family restaurant. A farm is busy enough, so runnin’ a restaurant as well makes life even tougher. My sister an’ I helped our parents every day. So even if there was a fountain I probably wouldn’ have paid much ‘ttention to it.”

She took out another cookie and popped it into her mouth. Riba chewed slowly, savoring the sweetness of the soft bread. “Wish?” she mumbled, her mouth still filled with food. “Ehhh. I guess I’d wish for my family to be happy. Yeh. Happy.” Finally, she swallowed, smiling softly. “What’ve ya wished for?”

"A restaurant?" Ophelia said, perking up. "That must have been fun. Busy, but fun, right?" she said. Well, she thought it would be fun. You'd get to meet new people each day! And keeping busy was something that interested the reaper. Being bored was boring! "But how does your family manage when you're here?" she asked, realizing that. But at least Riba had a sister to help out. She wondered if she was older or younger. Do they look like each other?

When asked what she'd wish for, Ophelia opened her mouth and promptly closed it again. It would probably be best not to spew out every little thing she would throw a coin in for. But her ultimate wish was similar to Riba's. "I'd wish for my parents to be proud of me. Though mine sounds a little selfish..." she said, looking away at that point.

Riba nodded. “A restaurant,” she confirmed. She grinned and once again nodded her head. “Ya, it was. Lots of cleanin’ and takin’ orders and deliverin’ food and cookin’ with Ma, but it was still fun, ya.” She rolled her head as she recalled the nostalgic aches and pains in her muscles day after day, but it hadn’t taken her long to grow accustomed to it. “Ah, ya. My Ma and Pa hired a new person to help out, so they’re doin’ fine.”

She patiently watched Ophelia open and close her mouth, apparently tempted to answer immediately, but decided to ponder her reply instead. Riba nodded at Ophelia’s wish, smiling. “Not really. A lotta people would want that too. I think it’s natural to want their parents to be proud of them. I would—though I think I already got it.” She laughed as she fished out another fish cookie and took a bite. “Say, do ya practice magic? ‘cause I’m still learnin’ and all.” She gestured to her uniform with a grin.

Ophelia wondered what it was like, working in a family restaurant. Was it hard to keep family drama out of the workspace? Or were they like a cookie cutter family that always loved each other no matter what. She smiled, thinking of those retro posters of happy families and how ridiculous they looked.

She sat silently for a moment, thinking she's so lucky..to have parents that were already proud of her. But Ophelia was grateful for the subject change, directing her attention away from that personal pain.

"I do," she said at first, before realizing she should add -what- she practiced. "I specialize in debilitation magics. Weakening my foes until I can take them out easily. I'm not too strong physically. And I was never too good at, you know, throwing magic bolts and stuff. So I learned how to make my enemy slower, weaker, more susceptible to certain things, and stuff." she said, playing with the water. She was a little insecure about her choice of magic, you could say. And she chose to leave out her method of casting, as well. It could be seen as quite silly, and the reaper didn't want to look that way to a younger girl who could potentially see her as a role model! It was possible..

Riba had never bothered to compare her family to the poster families people often saw. They were not the happiest bunch, but drama was far and few in between, and usually alleviated in a couple days. Her thoughts rarely strayed from work or practicing magic in her free time. She was, too put it simply, going through the motions. Riba’s family loved her enough and she loved them back just as much, but she was still a small town girl looking for something more. Despite the idyllic, calm lifestyle, there was no spark. However, now that she was here attending the academy, Riba was beginning to find that glow.

“Debilitation. I see. I see.” Riba nodded politely as her hand snuck back into the bag to pull out yet another treat. She crinkled her face as she realized the dearth of cookies and briefly pondered if she should hurry to purchase a second batch. “Strong, huh? Dunno if I could call myself strength, but I definitely ain’t weak,” she laughed with an amused grin. “I ain’t too good at attack spells, too. I think I wanna focus on summoning. Ya…” Her gaze turned dreamy as she began to imagine herself—slightly older, slightly more experienced, surrounded by summons. Summoning would be a nice magic to specialize in, yes. “Ah, but yer magic is jus’ fine! All kinds of magic is important, of course.”

Ophelia nodded with a small smile. She admired strong girls. Whether it was the strength of their muscles, their minds, or their hearts. But damsels in distress still held some appeal. In fairytails at least.

"Summoning would be awesome, I think. Like always having a friend to call upon at any given time. Kind of like Alchemia, but these ones can fight with you, protect you." Ophelia said, wondering what manner of beast she would have been able to summon if she chose that field. She also wondered what Riba could summon. Her first thought was a giant fish, since the reaper's eyes fixated on the witchling's snack for a moment. She imagined Riba riding a giant fish into the sunset and giggled.

She then blushed slightly. It seemed more and more people were accepting her choice of magic these days. Even though it was only a couple years since she was in Makai, herself. Perhaps her parents and classmates were just old-fashioned. Or maybe times change quicker than she thought.

"What do you think you'll do when you graduate?" she asked, resting her head on one shoulder.

Riba adored fairytales. As a child, she would cuddle in bed with her sister while her mother faithfully sat at the edge. The older woman would smooth the covers and then quietly tell her children stories of knights and dragons and princesses that filled the two girl’s imaginations and fueled their dreams. Even now the wild adventures and heartfelt morals still occupied her mind. But she was no damsel in distress. If anything, she was going to be the knight.

The blue-haired girl nodded her head as she fished out another fish cookie. “Yea, an’ I really like animals.“ Lips curled into a smile. “I’ve already learned ta summon some items an’ a couple creatures, but dat’s ‘bout it. I need ta get better.” She heard the reaper’s giggle and she curiously cocked her head at the woman. What was so funny?

“I dunno.” She shrugged and scooted back a bit so she could lie down on the fountain’s edge, her legs crossed. “I guess I’ll travel ‘round fo’ a bit, but I dunno wha’ I’ll do af’er dat, but I’m sure I’ll think a somethin’.” Riba smiled confidently.

"Whatever life throws your way, right?" she said, her smile reflecting Riba's confidence. How refreshing it was to see someone unsure of what lies in store for her, but to be completely unafraid of the unknown.

Ophelia peered towards Riba, her head still nestled against her own shoulder. She grinned, "How bout you show off a little and summon something for me?" she suggested, getting a little excited at the thought. She twisted around, suddenly facing the witchling. "Maybe something cute! Definitely something harmless.." she jabbered, having a knack for prodding others to display their talents. She was really hoping for a giant fish now. Right into the fountain. In reality, anything would impress the reaper, even a candle. But the fish...the fish would really take the cake. And maybe take the crackers, too, and eat them or something. Ophelia's imagination began to run wild as she pictured how the entire thing would pan out, giggling to herself again.
