Youko lapped up some water from the river, quenching her thirst. It was a rather warm day, but nothing unbearable. In fact, it was a most lovely summer day, in her opinion. Of course, she would be embarrassed to admit as much. Uncle would think it frivolous. At the thought of him, she glanced up at the sky, licking the excess water off of her maw. It had been many months since she had last seen him. She hoped his mission was going well. She hoped he was alright. A small, polite huff escaped her. Naturally, he would be perfectly fine. After all, he had taught her everything she knew about the deadly arts. There was no way anything would happen to him.
Idly, she settled back on her haunches, wondering what she should do, next. There was nowhere she had to be. Nothing to demand her attention. No one to help. Youko had all the time in the world and nothing to do with it.
Her ear flicked back and she blinked her pretty blue eyes. The sound of movement. The sense of another wolf nearby. Perhaps there was someone she could help, after all. Better yet, he seemed to be heading her way. At least, she hoped that he would be friendly. It would be such a shame if she had to kill him right away. She really hoped that he would want to be friends, not enemies.

In time with the sound of approaching pawsteps, Youko would catch a few bars of song - Jonsi was humming to himself, urging his lazy gait forward to the tune of an old ballad covering a long war. Prolonged loping numbered among the lanky wolf's many skills, and he's been covering an admirable amount of ground in the last few days...a fact that seemed especially important considering the last run-in with a wolf he had endured. It had been enthralling, certainly, but...sweet oaks, even he had the sense not to trail around courting a crocodile.
So, he was on his way, all time and no destination as well, when he caught the scent drifting about of a young female. He sniffed, sniffed (she would hear him pause), and altered his course to follow this alluring development. And as he neared his steps became smoother, his bearing more aristocratic. It never hurt to make a good impression.

As her ears twitched forward and back in response to the various sounds, she rose to her feet and turned to await the male. Though he was merely humming, he seemed to have a good voice. What was he like? The wind was wrong for her to catch his scent, but she did not have to wait long until he appeared before her.
Oh. He did have a proud bearing. Truly. Despite his vagabond state of more skin and bone than muscle, he still managed to be quite a handsome male. Spots and all. And what pretty jewelry! Remembering that such thoughts were frivolous, she did not allow her eyes to linger on them, but the shiny bracelets were difficult to ignore. Oh, but he would be waiting for her to say something. Ah, what to say! First introductions could be ever so awkward. Youko ducked her head shyly, but looked up at him from beneath her lashes.
“Hello,” she said quietly. Would he be nice? She hoped he would not yell at her or tell her to go away. She did not like yelling.

Ahh, would you look at that? What a lovely young girl, and with such curious eyes! Jonsi smiled, his studded ear twitching, and brought himself to a regal halt. "Oh, pardon me," he apologized richly, his brows arcing in a look of supplication, "I didn't mean to intrude." His bangled paw raised uncertainly, as if he was waiting for an order to turn around and march back off. "Unless you're looking for some company?"

Oh, and he was well-mannered, too. He did not yell at her, but asked if she wanted him to leave. How kind. Youko lifted her head a little higher and wagged her tail slightly.
“I would love some company,” she said. “It has been a while since I have had any. Oh, but only if you do not mind, of course.”
She did not want to be presumptuous. He might not actually want to visit with her. Oh, but she hoped that he did. He seemed so nice. So refined. Would he want to be friends with her? Like Qaletaqa? Well, Uncle did not approve of friends, but she still thought it would be nice to have a few and what was the harm, really? She never stayed near any of them long enough for them to hurt her, like Uncle assured her they would. Somehow, she always ended up parting ways with them rather quickly. Did that count as friendship? Hmm…

At her words, the leggy wolf burst into a sunny grin, unself-conscious of the crooked canine tooth this grin displayed. "You must believe me, dear, I've learned never to pass up an afternoon with a beautiful girl." Still smiling, he looked away, sampling the breeze with his long, fine nose, only to glance back after a moment with a laugh gleaming in his green-apple eyes. "Of all the sorts of wolves I could run into, no doubt you are empirically the best." And he sat, pulling his tail about his paws. "Unfortunately for you, I am no such catch. My name is Jonsi, though." He tilted his head, to peer curiously in turn at her.

The she-wolf ducked her head at the compliment, finding his crooked fang rather charming. Really. She had never come across a wolf quite so cavalier as this one seemed to be. It was…refreshing. Yes. Pleasantly refreshing. Of course, she enjoyed meeting all sorts of people, but even she had to admit that some made for more pleasurable company than others. Jonsi looked to be a promising prospect for a lovely afternoon.
“I am Youko,” she said. “But surely you are being unfair to yourself, even as you give me too much credit.” Her lady-like disposition called for modesty in such a situation, though she was pleased at his words. Regardless, her humility was genuine. Youko did not spend much time thinking of her high points, except as they pertained to helping others.

"Youko," he repeated, apparently feeling out the word and finding it quite nice. "I stand by what I said. I might not be the most odious of wolves, but I would pale in comparison to a dashing prince." At this he smiled, considering Youko with a look that was a little too wide in its scope to be entirely courteous. "You, however, would not pale. You look as fresh as a newly turned leaf."

Though she might be highly skilled and worldly in some things, social dances, especially those between male and female, were foreign to her. As such, Youko completely missed the implications of the going-over that Jonsi gave her.
“Well,” she said, not really knowing how to take such a remark. Everyone was entitled to their opinion, she supposed. Even though he was clearly exaggerating. Fishing around for something to say so as to make for pleasant company, Youko resorted to something a topic that was tried and true, and had often ended up with her helping many wolves with their problems, be they small or large.
“May I inquire as to why you are traveling?”

He gave a nod that was curiously obliging, even formal, at her question, taking a moment to ponder the girl before him - her polished courtesy paired against her...naivete. "Of course." He glanced over his shoulder, at his own lean body. "As you might guess, I am a wolf who travels more often than not. I am a storyteller, by nature and by trade. And a wanderer by nature as well." He gave her another smile, sunlight winking in his eyes. "If I may ask, Youko, are you a traveler as well? Or do you live in these parts?"

"Oh, no. I do not have a home, as such," she said, glancing down. Some wolves thought little of wanderers, thinking only those in packs were worth their time. Of course, Jonsi was a wanderer, too, so perhaps he would not think less of her. Even more than that, it would be rude to assume the worst of him when they just met.
"I prefer to travel, offering help where I may," she continued, though she did not elaborate. Uncle had warned her about speaking too freely of her more...dangerous skills. It could lead to more trouble than it was worth. Discretion was best.

"Interesting,", he replied, his head and shoulders shifting in a way that suggested he was making himself comfortable for a good spat of listening. His sharp eyes watched her face with an intensity that was unusual, and perhaps even rude. "What sort of help does a creature such as you offer? I must know."

As ever, Youko's social skills failed her and she did not realize how oddly intent the male's focus was. Instead, she puzzled out the best way to answer the question without being indelicate or too obvious.
"Sometimes, I help people find people they are looking for, or help them hunt if they are unable. Sometimes, I...take care of their problems." Permanently. A dead enemy can cause no trouble. It is better that way.

His head tilted, curiously; he had always loved puzzles, and this girl seemed to be flaunting more than one of them in his face. How does a wolf spend her time that she would walk her way around the topic? Oh, he had lots of ideas, but given that he spent so much of his time in fantasy, he didn't feel prepared for a real guess. Instead he smiled, and considered (because Youko certainly didn't seem to mind), and kept asking questions. "I imagine that's awfully rewarding for you - do you keep busy this way? Have you got a scent out that directs imperiled wolves to you?"

A scent out? One that guides others to her? What a curious thought. Perhaps it was a joke. Youko was not good at jokes.
She shrugged. "I wander. Sometimes I find many in need of my assistance. This I enjoy. Sometimes, I spend a lot of time alone. This I do not mind, though it can get a little lonely."
