With a spring in her step and a meal in her belly, a female wolf wandered with no particular goal, rubbing herself periodically against trees and shrubs just so passing wolves would know she'd went by. Birch was, as females came, a little bit self-centred; and that was the way she liked it. It didn't matter that she was far from any pack, far from any civilization, far from any herds of potential food. She'd just snagged a den of delicious rabbits and was feeling particularly smug. She paused on the overhang of a dried bank to feel the wind on her face, and impulsively threw her head to the sky and let loose a short little howl, just to let anybody nearby know that she was around. Yes indeed, Birch had arrived.

Sheesh was patiently sitting by a stream. He'd picked to fish today as a way to fill his belly. No long arduous journeys for him. Just a quiet day by the stream fis...... The male jumped as a short howl sounded through the forest. Well maybe not so quiet. He sighed as he realized the fish he'd been tempting near had been scared off by his involuntary reaction. Sheesh, just great. The dark wolf picked himself off the damp moss he'd been laying on. Might as well go see who was out there. Not that I care, sheesh, he told himself. As a lone wolf he wandered and traveled as he liked. True he had a small territory that he liked to call his, but he was there more often as not.

Birch smiled into the emptiness of the land, ears pricked in case any replies came. None did, and that was fine by her. Trotting down around the curve of the land, immune to the falls and rises of ancient forces and tectonic plates, the wolf swayed to the beat of her own drum and went in the direction that seemed vaguely appropriate.
After a short walking distance, the sounds of another creature tickled her senses. Intrigued, she paused where she stood, allowing the other living thing to approach first. Before long, she had gathered enough evidence (that of smell and hearing) that suggested it was a wolf, and maybe, should she be lucky enough, a male.
"Hello?" She asked coyly of the anonymous wood, begging the trees for introductions, perhaps sweetly luring first names from all the insects that fluttered by, unable to speak wolftongue though they were. At least, Birch liked to think so.

There seemed a passable time where it was just him, trees, and birds. For a moment he wondered if the unknown wolf had already left. It turned out, she hadn't when a voice drifted down. He paused and drooped his ears and tail. Oh dear, he didn't like the sound of that first hello. Sheesh, what am I getting myself into? Again.
He coughed softly to clear his throat. It was too late now to turn back. Clearly she had already sensed him in some way. "Down here." He called back gruffly. Sheesh was standing near the bottom of some large, boulder sized step-stones. Giving the land he was facing a good 20 foot rise. It sounded as the voice he hear was coming from up there.

Aha! The stranger was male. That lightened Birch's spirits significantly (not that they needed to be improved, really) and a little bounce entered the spring of her paws as she set off towards the voice. She made her approach deliberately noisy, so as not to startle him, crunching leaves and twigs underfoot and appearing through the trees, peeking out at him - playing coy, though she was anything but.
Her eyes took him in, more predatory than friendly. Oh, yes, he was certainly interesting looking. Was he dappled, or was it a trick of the light coming through the trees? The urge to get closer and investigate him, interrogate his scent and his feel, was quite strong. Not the strongest she'd ever felt, but there was something about the rough, annoyed way he'd announced himself that pushed some buttons in the female wolf. "Am I intruding?" Birch called out, trying to sound less bold than she felt.

Sheesh heard the other wolf approaching before seeing her. He tried to keep his tail from ducking as he realized it was a female. His last encounter with one hadn't gone so well off the start. He glanced behind him to be sure there was no briar patches. There would not be a repeat of that.
Was she intruding? He took a moment to think. Well she had disrupted his fishing, but he wasn't going to tell her that. "I suppose not." Sheesh returned the look, more skeptical than anything. Now it was her move. Would she let him be or declare this area hers and try to drive him off? He thought she might be a bit too cheerful, the way she peeked out around trees for that possibility. Perhaps she just wanted a game. The male almost gave a shutter. No. Not that kinda game!

A soft smile broke out on the female's face. "Oh, good." Her tail was poised carefully at a medium height, not dominant but not submissive either. "I'm Birch," she said, and began to approach again at a trot, slowing more as she got closer. Able to get a better look at the stranger, Birch decided she liked what she saw and made up her mind then and there that this wolf would be her newest trophy. She would win him at any cost, rock his world, and then move on to find another male she liked the look of. Tail wagging, the earth-toned she-wolf cocked her head at him and smiled more broadly, expectantly.

Sheesh could only stand there and wonder what her game was. He had no intention of playing, but first he had to figure it out. Warily he watched as she came closer. Sheesh, why did she have to introduce herself? It would be only polite to respond. "I'm Sheesh."

She almost giggled, but restrained herself just in time. What an unusual name. It was certainly very memorable.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Sheesh," she said, keeping her tone friendly but neutral. Some wolves went for the coy, weak act, while others liked the flirty girls that came on strong. It could be difficult to tell which would do the trick, and the application of the wrong persona could drive off a potential "friend". This one was difficult to read - but then, she did like a challenge. "Are you... alone?" There was a slight hint of a suggestion there in her question, just subtle enough that maybe she could pretend it was accidental.

Sheesh wondered if it really was a pleasure for the female wolf. She could just be saying that, and really wishing him gone. He nodded his head stiffly. "Likewise Birch." Oh there was nothing wrong with meeting new wolves, but right now he was more interested in filling his belly. Hoping she didn't follow, he went to take a few steps back to his fishing hole.
His eyes gave her a sharp look, when he looked back, as she asked her question. Sheesh was slow to respond, his brow furrowed. Was she asking for dallance? That didn't seem right. "....yes." Surely she could tell there was no other wolves around, and he replied blandly.
