Ok so we get alot of threads asking for advice when it comes to buying a bass. Instead of filling our guild with threads asking questions about bass buying I've decided to create a sticky for it all. This way we also build a type of "Archive of advice" So for now on please post Bass Purchasing Questions here. I'll remove some of the smaller threads and the older ones and spread the word of this new sticky to the bigger ones. My only advice is if your just learning how to play the bass you dont need a rickenbacker. Kyrenx Here goes a link to a thread I use to keep up, but as I no longer have time to deal with it much anymore, the thread sort of died.
http://www.gaiaonline.com/guilds/viewtopic.php?t=15009
It should have guidelines for buying bass guitars, some gear reviews i've done and a bit of minor troubleshooting advice. Hope this helps.

I have two basses, a Fender Precision(Starter bass) and an Ibanez GIO Soundgear. They each have four strings. I was wondering what kind of bass would be a next step up, either four, five, or six string. I've been playing for almost two years (in December). And I'm thinking about saving for a new one.

i'd say it depends on your style of playing and what kind of music u listen to...if your into rock i'd say go for an epiphone thunderbird or if u r into jazz and what-not go with a warwick corvette 5 string! I''m currently saving for a warwick corvette jazzman 4 string

Truinthil I'm looking at buying a Schecter C4 bass. Any comments, critique, alternate suggestions? I've only ever encountered a Schecter Diamond Series C4 Xxx Bass personally (not sure if its exactly the same one your talking about as I don't do much music shop hopping anymore), but from what I could tell after fiddling around with it once before, it was a pretty nice axe for its price range. I loved the sound I got from the EMG passive pickups, bass & treble EQ were a plus, I remember it having a fast/smooth rosewood fretboard, a great look and quite the punchy sound. Of course, I've personally always liked the Schecter brand in general. Just about all the Schecter basses i've encounted were all sweet in their own right. Does that help any? smile

Magnificient for starters how good is a Fender Squire P-bass? how much would it be worth used? No offense in advanced, but to me, Squier is pretty much a junk brand. (Yes I know its a subdivision of Fender, but the simple fact is: Fender = good, Squier = bad.) Its as beginner as basses get. If you sell to someone (example: like some guy off the street) you may be able to get at least $100 for it (without the amp) and that's if its in fairly decent condition (maybe $150 if it is literally like new, and perphaps more if its Standard and not an Affinity Series).. and if you try to trade it in at a music store, id say half or 1/4th of what you originally purchased it for.

I'm looking to buy a new bass, because my current one is not so good. sweatdrop I was originally going to buy a six string, but I've decided I'd like to learn to play slap, so I threw that idea out. What would be a good bass to start slapping on in the $0-$300 (Preferably like $100-$250, most desire for free. domokun ) range? A bonus would be if it were a five string. Currently I'm playing a vintage Lyle bass, though I don't know specifically what kind. sweatdrop Edit: I'm kind of changing my mind about slap, and considering buying this bass. Is it any good/would it be worth the money?

Actumen I'm looking to buy a new bass, because my current one is not so good. sweatdrop I was originally going to buy a six string, but I've decided I'd like to learn to play slap, so I threw that idea out. Is it any good/would it be worth the money? If your still looking for a fairly decent 5-string slap bass close to that price range.. the best I could think of was the Ibanez SR305DX 5-String.

As far as that Rogue goes, im not a big fan of 6-string bass guitars.. seem like overside guitars and id rather play on my actual guitar instead of one of those any day. However, Rogue is a good brand for buying a solid first guitar, though in the long run.. its usually recommended to go for an upgrade if your playing really gets serious.
