Biography: Colton was the second born son of Robert and Sarah Rice. He was a very well loved child, or perhaps too well loved. Spoiled, would be one, or perhaps “the”, word that described his childhood. It was no small secrete that Colton’s older brother wasn’t well. In fact most of the family knew that the older male wasn’t going to die in his childhood. Robert Jr. always was in his room, in bed sick. Little Colton was healthy and would always run around the house. Of course they kept Colton far away. Though he did relish the time his brother could leave his room and they could play. It was always under the careful eyes of their nannies or parents. Unfortunately with these situations, parents started to play favorites. Their mother would spend a lot of time in the room with “Poor Sick Lil Mas’er Robert” as most of Colton’s black nannies called him. Their father favored Colton. Passing down secrets and dreams for his future of taking over the plantation when he came of age instead of his brother. What boy wouldn’t get a big head after that? Yet things didn’t go the way the family thought they would.

Robert Jr. survived his childhood to be a sickly teenager. Still leaving Colton to play and grow up by himself. A serious young teen, Colton was known for his keen eyes and his ruthlessness. It was perhaps Colton’s own mother that suggested that he should join the army. Get an education away from the home. This idea delighted Colton when his father told him. It would be a way to prove himself and earn a title away from his family. Though Colton’s mother great grand-dad or something further behind was a captain in some war, that she was very proud of. But Colton’s father knew what it meant for Colton to go away. That the plantation training would fall to the sickly older brother.

Of course this didn’t dawn on Colton until he came home. The family was announcing the engagement of someone’s daughter that Colton didn’t know. Some prominent family that would ensure some money to their already abundant funds. It was a good match, she was homely but well built. At the party for his home coming and the engagement, it was slightly awkward. His father looked a bit beaten. He had only been gone for four years or so. It was during the dancing that his father finally got a chance to tell him what this could mean for their dreams. Colton understood and dreaded it. Robert Jr. would be moving into a house that they were building on the land. A smaller home until Robert and Sarah moved into the small one. It was then that Robert told Colton. That Robert Jr. was still sickly and could go any time. “Just wait…”

What was there to do but wait? No wars for him to fight. Sure he would make his rounds to check up on troops in training and such. He was well paid for that, but he wanted more. It was with-in a few months that Florence was introduced to him by his parents as the woman he would be marrying. She was beautiful. And they rarely talked for long and never seemed to get close enough to make real connections. Colton was explained the reasons of marrying her, and that they would be getting a good fertile land as a present. Close to the family but not close enough to be a ’threat’ to his brother. Robert Jr. was prone to paranoia.

Soon they were married and in their new home. Life was simple and easy. Colton was as doting a husband as he could be. Excited with the prospect of becoming a father before his brother. But things were off. But Colton denied it. Drowned his worries in the bottle. And that is where the problem probably started. Though Perseverance was a happy arrival. It ended him being allowed in his wife’s bed. Though he was proud he was a father of a boy before his brother had even conceived, he was angry at his wife’s decision.

Assigned slave: “I am hoping this Madame Winters will have a good eye and find me someone good enough.”
