Character Name: Ruven
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Sexual Orientation: Heterosexual… as far as he can tell. He’s never been very interested in courtship.
Craft/Rank: Holder / Candidate
History:
Ruven was born into a life of security and ease as a member of the wealthy class in Ursul hold. His father bred high quality strains of various kinds of beasts and his mother enjoyed weaving tapestries. Both of these occupations served more as hobbies than sources of income. The family lived off of the earnings of some fortunate ancestor who had been very successful in business many turns ago. For most of his infanthood Ruven was spoiled rotten, showered with love and praise, and treated like a miniature prince.

The day his mom gave birth to his brother Mabui, that all changed. Suddenly Ruven’s parents had a new treasure to smother with attention. Little by little their focus and affection shifted from their older son to their younger son. Mabui grew up to be the perfect child. He had a natural aptitude for everything from music to sports to academics. He never whined or acted disobedient, always behaved properly, and treated everyone with respect. Naturally, Ruven was horribly jealous. He did his best to reclaim his spot light, but he just could not compete. His only solace –the one thing that kept him together- was that fact that he had been born first.

Primogeniture dictated that he would inherit his family’s fortune entirely. Some day Mabui would have to depend on him! Oh he could not wait! Yet, when Ruven came of age at fifteen, he was not named heir. His birthday passed, then weeks, then months. The redhead teen eventually understood the truth. Ruven had been denied his birthright. Mabui would be chosen as heir instead. This was the last straw.

When a Search rider took interest in him one day, Ruven eagerly insisted on being taken to Trine Weyr. He was NOT going to live any longer in his brother’s shadow. He would carve out a new life for himself – one where he could shine – even if it meant abandoning luxury and comfort for hard work and sacrifice.

Ruven has only been at Trine Weyr for a short while. The transition has been extremely rough for him so far.

Description:
Ruven is sleek and slender, standing at a solid 5’11”. His most striking feature is his rich auburn colored hair. It is messy, straight, and long for a male, ending just above his shoulders. He has very fine facial features and golden brown eyes. The candidate’s lack of bulk or muscle (and the fact that he keeps himself very carefully cleaned and groomed) makes him come off as slightly effeminate, but this is deceptive. There is a bitter determination-fueled strength lurking in those lanky limbs of his. Those who meet him learn very quickly that this pampered “girly boy” is well on his way to becoming a man.

Personality:
Negative: Vain. Ruven considers himself “Pern’s gift to humanity”. He loves to boast, show off, and be in the center of attention. This trait is very off-putting for those who meet him initially and often ends up earning him enemies. Oh well. He does not care. Most of his peers were born into a lower class than he was, and that makes him better than them by default. They’re all just jealous of his princely charms, anyways.

Positive:Hard Working. Ruven is going to “make it big” or die trying. His brother may have stolen his rightful inheritance, but Ruven knows deep down that he is still destined for greatness. One day he will earn the world’s respect. One day he will be a famous heroic dragon rider. One day he will finally outshine his perfect sibling! Even if it means waking up absurdly early every morning, scrubbing washrooms, doing candidate chores like a mere commoner, risking his life, and pushing his talents to their very limits, Ruven is determined to succeed no matter what obstacles life throws his way. Thanks to this characteristic, despite his flaws, he may actually grow up to be a very competent rider.

Negative: Jealous. Ruven likes to be the best at everything. If he’s your friend, he wants to be your favorite friend. If you’re good at sports, he wants to be better. Anyone who outperforms him in absolutely anything is automatically on his “hate” list.

Positive: Clever. Ruven is far from what one might call “talented”. Even though he tries very hard to pretend he’s perfect, the only natural skill he has that is “above average” is his wit. For him word games, mind games, and puzzles are all a breeze. Most of the time he wastes his smarts to cheat his way to victory in other fields. For example, he might beat a swift runner in a long distance race by abusing well-hidden short cuts. Likewise, he might outperform a wonderful vocalist in a contest of singing picking a popular crowd-pleasing song. Maybe eventually he will straighten up and apply his cunning to more useful tasks such as optimizing thread fighting techniques. Right now he’s too busy chasing stardom.

Negative: Bitter. Don’t bring up his past around him. Don’t do it. D:

Positive: Assertive. This boy will stick up for himself. He will also stick up for his buddies, you, that random drudge, and that stray cat you’re picking on. Ruven is proud to be a champion of those weaker than himself (though the word "champion" might be a sliiiiiight exaggeration on his part). He also is not easy to push around. Naturally, he takes orders from his superiors, but beyond that, well... good luck convincing him to do anything he does not want to do.

Other: RAINBOWS AND UNICORNS.

Notes:
Stuff Left to Do
1. I would like to draw him, but it might be a while before I get around to it.
2. Banners. This page is too plain.

Thoughts
1. I'm not sure if his background is acceptable, so I would love some criticism in that regard!
2. Primogeniture is a tradition specific to his particular family. I'm not implying that all of Pern practices it (though I'm sure it's fairly common).
3. I wish I could have done more on his particular Hold but I could not find enough information on it. Therefore, for the sake of avoiding mess ups, I avoided going into much detail there.
4. His family is rich, but they are not nobility. Yaaaay less complicated!
5. Yes, I am aware that the former social status of candidates does not matter much once he or she is in a weyr. However, it will be a while yet before Ruven is willing to let go of his past.
6. I like dynamic characters. Ruven is pretty much an arrogant jerk right now, but over time that will change.
7. Sorry for the form-like format of his personality. I thought that arranging it like that would make it easier to, say, pick which dragon color would suit him (if he ever Impresses in the first place ;] ). It is also designed to make life easier for those RPers who refuse to read long profiles - the bold words alone are enough to give a decent picture of Ruven. If you'd prefer normal paragraphs, just let me know!

Stuff left to do

1. Awesome! I look forward to seeing it when you do!
2. Banners are awesome, I suck at them!

Thoughts

1. Background looks fine.
2. That's fine, I know that a lot of families on Pern work like that ^^
3. We never did get around to doing a lot of detail on the Holds, but if it's something you'd like to know more about I can add it to my to do list! I could probably get you some basic info fairly swiftly.
4. That's good! Rich is fine, but knowing big figures such as the Lord Holder wouldn't be <3
5. Indeed it doesn't, but as you say that's not going to be easy for him to accept (which will be fun to watch!)
6. 8D Yay jerks! While it's fine for him to grow and change of course, we discourage complete character flips as that would change Impressions/might change whether or not we'd approve them or not and so on.
7. The set out is fine as it is for us to decide whether or not he fits a given dragonet <3
