Sorry for page-stretchery.Hero Alias: Penumbra** Real Name: Jenner Roce (pronounced Jen-nah Roh-k) Age upon Entering the Academy: 14 years old. Which area is the character based/from: Crantel.
Powers: In general terms: Shadow manipulation. spacedooTwo Dimensional Shadow Manipulation The easiest of manipulation, Jenner can pull shadows from the corner of rooms, from buildings, from basically any object that cannot move and move it into shapes and forms on a flat surface. It's almost in an artistic way, with the way he moves the shadows like paint on a flat surface. This is the least draining manipulation he does, and it's also the most common. Jenner has been doing this since he was a baby, as a way of calming himself down. This method of manipulation does not drain his energy too much, and he can make shadows grow immensely or shrink to nothing without too much trouble. This is, of course, due to the practice. Like previously mentioned, he's been doing this all his life. It's as natural to him as breathing.
spacedooThree Dimensional Shadow Manipulation This is a new development. As an upshot of puberty, apparently, there was a spike in his ability to form shadows. Namely, he gained the ability to manipulate them into three-dimensional shadow figures. However, this ability has only shown itself in a handful of instances. Namely, The Shadow-Man is technically a sort of 3D manipulation (see below). As well, on the rare occasion that Jenner has been pushed so far into anger, he has expressed an ability in throwing things with 3D shadows, actually picking up the object and throwing it. However, he has no idea how to control this himself, and the few times he's done it have drained him immensely, often making him woozy or knocking him out cold. Therefore, he has had little experimentation with the 3D manipulations.
spacedooThe Shadow-Man There's only been one instance of The Shadow-Man that Jenner remembers. When he was 13, Jenner was in a fight with a kid at a park near his house. The kid was bigger than him, stronger than him, it was essentially shaping up to be less of a 'fight' and more of a verified a** kicking. And then Jenner remembers seeing black, like the sun had gone out. The Shadow-Man was protecting him from the blows of the kid, just enough that Jenner could run away without more injuries than a black eye. This figure is both Boogeyman and Savior to Jenner. He has no idea what it is, or where it came from. He knows that he didn't manipulate it himself, it just... appeared. What he doesn't know is that the Shadow-Man is his own shadow. He didn't manipulate it on purpose, but in extreme cases of duress where his physical well-being is in danger, The Shadow-Man will protect him. It's a genetic safeguard, but he has no idea. He just knows whatever it is, he can't control it. So he'd much rather pretend The Shadow-Man doesn't exist.
There are obvious limitations to his abilities. While the 2D manipulation is something he's done before, he can't just drag shadows willy nilly into the fray. They have to be shadows cast by inanimate objects, or by living objects that cannot move like trees and bushes. This is the same for 3D manips. Shadows of living, moving creatures, like dogs, cats, and other people, cannot be manipulated. For whatever reason, he just doesn't have that sort of power or control. And besides, manipulating a living shadow would be difficult. With inanimate shadows, there's no outside personality force to fight with. They just go where he wants them to. But with a person's shadow, it would fight him because of an inherent personality that the shadow has thanks to it's living host.
Another limitation is energy. Without energy, he can't manipulate even 2D shadows. 2D shadows don't take as much energy as 3D shadows. For example, he can easily manipulate a 2D dog the size of a Great Dane. But he cannot manipulate that into 3D. Making a shadow the size of his palm in 3D takes twice as much energy as forming a giant shadow on the side of a building for Jenner. With practice, it'll be easier for him to make 3D shapes, but they'll still take up a larger chunk of his energy than 2D manipulations.
And finally, in regards to The Shadow-Man. Whatever it is in his mind, he cannot control it. The Shadow-Man will act on its own regard to save Jenner from danger. Sort of his own superhero, The Shadow-Man will not relent until Jenner is safe. It's why Jenner avoids confrontation, because he isn't sure what sets off The Shadow-Man, whether it's physically or if any sort of danger will set it off. He's terrified of the Shadow-Man, so of course he's afraid of using him to his advantage. With practice, he can learn to communicate and even work with the Shadow-Man, but he will never be able to control it. It's a part of him, but it's also a Living Shadow, and Jenner cannot control those.
** Penumbra is the working alias, but this might change. I'm open to suggestions on names! I was going for an astronomy theme, but. xD An addictional note. The gender may change. This is the profile I'm using for my semi, whose gender I don't know at this time. The name will stay the same, as I picked it for its general neutrality, but the she/he/him/her prefixes will change if necessary.

How did your character get their powers: As far as Jenner and his parents know, Jenner was born with it. In fact, Mrs. Roce remembers bringing the baby home on the day the adoption was finalized. For some reason, the lights wouldn't turn on. Her husband went to the basement to check the circuits, and she decided to check the bulbs. She put the baby down, who was only six or seven months old at the time, and all of a sudden, as she recalls... "Shadows, from every lamp in the room, just... leaped from the glass and went to him, like eager puppies returning to their master." Mr. Roce has himself seen instances where Jenner would make a shadow dance on the wall from as young an age as a year old, giggling in his crib as the shadows danced around with his mobile. They've always known he was gifted, but have no idea where it came from.
Why enter the Academy? Jenner hasn't always fit in. His parents tried to home-school him to keep him from exposing his gift. For the most part, it worked, but it left Jenner with a lack of social skills. He knew how to act around adults, but not kids his own age. So when he finally did enter public schooling... He didn't get on well with others. He grew up with a sense of familial protectiveness, and after his father lost his job, his parents found out quickly that Jenner was stealing, using his shadows to distract people while he stole money, food, and whatever else the family needed at the time. Rather than send their only child, their pride and joy, to jail for his crimes, Mr. and Mrs. Roce agreed that perhaps the Academy could instill in him a stricter sense of morals, right and wrong, and... with any help, give him the opportunity for a better future. Jenner is hoping that being sent to the academy will give him an opportunity to experiment with his ability to manipulate 3D shadows, but he is skeptical. With how tired they make him, he's not really looking forward to having to work to manipulate them.
Strengths: Loyalty once it's earned. He's not going to save a woman from a burning building just for the sake of doing it, but if it's someone that he respects, or cares for, then they'll have his loyalty to a fault. He's clever, and has the drive to better his ability. Because how cool would it be to be able to control what he was doing and not pass out from it, right? He's also pretty darn good at sneaking stuff out of kitchens and pockets, but we probably shouldn't consider that a strength, h-uh... Weaknesses: Suspicious! He will not trust just anyone, and it takes a lot to earn that trust. Once you have it, great! It's yours for virtually ever. But if you break it, then he will never forgive you. Jenner holds grudges like nobody's business. It takes a lot for him to forgive someone if he feels wronged. He's also got a bit of an attitude problem. Part of his confident facade, he seems to think that running at the mouth is the way to go. So more often than not, he's gotten into one fight or another. He won't necessarily back down from a fight if it gets to that point, either. Pride stops him from running, unless he's getting his a** kicked. In which case, he will run like a little girl.
Personality: There are two sides to Jenner: The side he shows, and the side he actually is. It isn't an equal division, of course. Rather, the two sides are intermingled, but vastly different.
He is confident, or at least acts that way. He can easily act the part of a confident boy who fully believes he's good at whatever it is he's doing. But it's all an act. Jenner nearly always second guesses whatever he's doing, unless it's playing with shadows. That is one of the rare instances that he is fully confident in what he does. Hell, he's been doing it long enough, he oughta be good at it! His parents tried to instill him with some sort of pride, but the bulk of it is an act.
Beneath the confident facade, he is actually pretty self conscious. Whether it's school work, or interacting with other kids his age, he's constantly second guessing what he's doing. It's less whether or not he's doing the right thing, and more whether or not he's actually pulling it off. He'd rather pull off a lie than look like a fool, so he comes off as either warily smart, or cowardly, depending on the situation and whose asked. Because of this self conscious second guessing, Jenner will avoid anything that is 'new' until he can observe it from a distance and get a feel on what he should do. Then? He'll absolutely inject himself into the situation and interact with people. But not without a little creepy stalking.
Which leads to the next aspect of his personality. Jenner isn't by any means the smartest kid in the school. Being home schooled until he was ten had the disadvantage that his education focused on some things, but not others, so he isn't necessarily up there with history or math. But put him on a street, and he can get home from anywhere in Crantel. On the streets, he is resourceful, confident, sly, sneaky... Whatever he needs to be to get back home. Wandering the streets as a kid in his neighborhood, he quickly picked up on how to survive. He's definitely street smart, which, to him, more than makes up for the lack of As and Bs in his report cards. Because of this, he'll probably need remedial classes... But if you get lost in a city with him, he's probably your best bet at finding food and shelter without getting shanked, stabbed, mugged, or shot.
This might make him seem like some sort of street hoodlum, but looking at Jenner... It's hardpressed to believe it. He's sly. In front of adults, he knows just how to act like the good, grateful little adopted kid who loves his parents even though they're not his. His mother spent hours going over etiquette with him. She focused on etiquette she had learned from Upper Sewitt, so it's antiquited, but it helped him to learn how to shmooze adults into liking him. But as he got older, he's become less and less dependant on being 'cute and gentlemanly' and more blending into the shadows.
Finally... He's just a kid. He has minimal maturity, though he tries to act twice as old as he is in an attempt to help his family. There's nothing more important to him than that. They gave him a life, if they hadn't helped him he wouldn't be who he was, and he is eternally grateful to them. He's always known he was adopted, they didn't believe in hiding it from him, and it did instill an odd sense of morality when it comes to lying. He'd rather tell the truth, but being a kid, sometimes lies just... slip out. Typically they're never 'out there' for long before he corrects himself. He makes mistakes. But if he has the slightest opportunity, or thinks he has the slightest opportunity to help his family? He'll do whatever it takes. Whether it's a crime or not.

General backstory and motivation for becoming a ~*~Hero~*~: OH GOD I'M SO SORRY IT'S SO LONG. D: This was an accident, I swwear. ;;
Before Jenner was adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Roce, he was abandoned at an orphanage. He never knew his mother, but his genetic past could hold a link to his current state. Namely, his power. Jenner's mother was young and foolish, wandering the streets well past her curfew and just making a juvenile nuisance of herself. She met a shadowy man who introduced her to the funner things in life. Namely, drugs and alcohol.
When the young girl found herself pregnant, panic spread through her. She couldn't keep it. She was only sixteen at the time. Her parents would kill her! So for nine months, she hid away while her parents and the police searched for her, biding her time. She gave birth anonymously at a hospital, and as soon as she could, she gave the baby up to an adoption agency. The lack of details could shed light on his abilities, but it's unlikely Jenner will ask these questions. At the time that he was given away, his mother had no knowledge of what her baby could do. Only that she couldn't provide for him.
For the first six months of his life, Jenner Roce was just another adorable baby sitting in a city-run orphanage, waiting for someone to come and love him. In spite of his surroundings, the staff at the orphanage claim that Jenner was always a happy baby. Laughing, smiling, he rarely fussed. A few of the staff recall odd things happening around his crib, mainly with the lights, but no one really believed them. Old orphanages always had faulty wiring. It couldn't possibly be the baby's fault that the wires were always finnicky.
It wasn't until Jenner was about six months old that Louis Roce and his wife, Evangeline, came to the orphanage. After trying for years to conceive, it was discovered that poor Evangeline couldn't bear a child without serious danger to her health. Opting instead to adopt, they searched orphanages high and low for the right child. It just so happened that Jenner was their "right baby". They adopted Jenner and took him home a few months after the initial meeting.
That was the first instance of Jenner's shadow playing. When Louis and his wife came home with little Jenner, the lights were out. It wasn't unusual; the house they had was large, but old, and the wiring was faulty, especially during storms like the one they had experienced the night before. So with a flashlight in hand, Louis went to the basement to check the fuses. Evangeline, making herself useful, set Jenner down in his basonette and went to check the light bulbs themselves. No sooner had she turned her back, Evangeline saw... well, shadows, leap from the corners of the room and the lamp shades themselves. She spun around, fearful for her baby, and saw something she had never seen before. The shadows had sunken into the basonette, almost... playing with little Jenner.
Instead of being scared, as she expected a baby to be, Jenner just laughed! He laughed, and even squealed happily at the shadows dancing around his basonette. When Louis came up from the basement, triumphant at having fixed the lights, he didn't believe a word of what Evangeline said. Instead, he attributed it to stress, and sent her on to bed.
It wasn't until a few months after Jenner's first birthday that Louis was, too, introduced to their son's unique method of consoling himself. During breakfast while his wife was on a trip to visit family in Upper Sewitt, Louis was cooking while Jenner played in his high chair. As he turned around, Louis was stunned to see that Jenner had somehow acquired shadow puppets. However, they moved and twirled on their own, cartwheeling and bouncing around in ways no hands could possibly pull off. When Evangeline came home, they discussed their son's powers.
It was agreed that, for the time being, they would keep it a secret. The Roces wanted to have a normal life for Jenner, even with his power. While at home, Evangeline encouraged his curiousity with shadows, but in public, Jenner was quick to learn that playing with shadows in public wasn't good.
In an effort to help Jenner gain some control, as well as a deeper intellectual look into his studies, Evangeline chose to homeschool Jenner for the first few years of his education. During this period, Jenner learned more than his basic school studies. His family was important to him, some could even say Drastically Important. He grew to develop a sense of pride in what his father did, though it was little more than blue collar work repairing robots and appliances for people in Cranten.
However, as he got older, so did Evangeline. While not necessarily an old woman, she was quickly growing easily tired by her son's antics. After a long discussion with his father, Jenner agreed to try going to public school for his Mom's sake, so she could have a break during the day. He didn't want to go, it was the first time he'd be away from his mother and father for almost an entire day. But he wanted his Mother to be happy more than he wanted to avoid it. He entered the public schooling system at the age of 10, after a few tests to determine where his grades and knowledge was concentrated.
From the beginning, Jenner didn't fit in. At first, it was nervousness and self conscious behavior. He'd sit in the corners where the shadows were greatest, pay attention, and do his work. That was the point of school, right? Jenner didn't grasp the little social nuances until a few weeks into the school year, when a couple bullies began to tease and taunt him for being a loser, nerd, or whatever the Jock Idiom decided that day. Soon, his nervousness turned into a slight dislike of the bullies and a greater disinterest in the general population of students. He just wanted to finish his work, and go home.
As such, Jenner didn't have friends to confide in. The bullying got worse, as it usually did when going unchecked, and one day after Jenner's eleventh birthday, the bullying escaladed from school yard brawls to teasing jibes and taunts outside of the schoolyard. When with his parents, Jenner would turn the other cheek, but when alone, he ran. He felt cowardly for it, but it was a safe way out.
During the summer between Jenner's 5th and 6th grade years, his father lost his job. At the time he had been working for a repairman's company, but layoffs were an unfortunate reality. Taking in the odd jobs at home to make ends meet, and dipping into their savings, kept the Roces' head above water but not by much. It was this sudden loss of stability that pushed Jenner into 'nicking' things. It was different from stealing, in his head, because it was stuff he genuinely needed for his family. Bread, clothes, little things here and there to make his Mother happy. They added up, but Jenner was quick to realize that if he took small things, they were rarely missed.
But small things didn't always put food on the table. He was twelve and halfway through the school year when he was first brought home for trying to steal something off a woman's windowsill. It became increasingly frequent that he returned home with a neighborhood escort. He was lucky, the police were rarely involved, but the neighbors became increasingly worried for the 'quiet Roce boy'.
The bullying escaladed during the school year, reaching peak harassment halfway through the 8th grade for Jenner. A particular bully, who had been bothering him for years, followed Jenner home from school one day. When no one was around, he jumped Jenner. Being twice his size, the bully overtook him quickly. Jenner fought back as much as he could, but for a boy with little physical strength and no experience in fighting, it didn't go so well. Jenner was on the ground, close to blacking out, when suddenly everything went black. He thought he had just passed out, but... Usually one didn't realize that. It wasn't until he moved his arms from his face that he saw what happened.
Standing between himself and the belly was a tall, lean figure. But it wasn't a person. As though a 2D Shadow had come to life, it stood between Jenner and the bully, taking the blows the Bully laid until finally, panicked and spooked, the bully ran off. Jenner, too, was spooked. Normally, when he manipulated shadows, it was with a conscious effort. This wasn't the case, so of course he didn't believe that it was actually him doing it. Between that, and the adrenaline coursing through him that screamed RUN... Jenner took off, the Shadow Man trailing behind him.
When Jenner got home, he claimed he had gotten into a fight, but wouldn't tell his parents with whom. Only that it was taken care of. From that point, he began to try and make it happen consciously. While he never, ever tried to conjure the Shadow Man, he did try to pull shadows off of the wall like the Shadow Man had. However, it never seemed to happen. It wasn't until a particular argument with his father that the 3D manipulations spiked, and he threw a vase at his father. Mortified, he tried to make up for it, apologizing profusely and swearing it would never happen again.
This was, unfortunately, only the beginning. Soon afterward, his parents were made aware of the stealing. Namely, a police officer managed to catch him and haul him home.
Many, many lectures went in to trying to make Jenner see where he was wrong. But he steadfastly replied with "It's for the family." and went to his room. At their wits' end, Louis and Evangeline began to seriously consider sending him to a private school in an attempt to teach him something the public schools clearly weren't. That's when the Sidekick Academy came up.
At first, he steadfastly argued against it. He didn't need some stupid academy! He could learn fine on the streets! But this, combined with the previous outburst where he nearly threw a vase at his father's head, the choice was obvious. He'd be going, whether he wanted to or not.
He was soon being enrolled in Sidekick Academy, with promises from his mother that she'd call every day and promises from his father that if he was good, they'd go to Sewitt for the summer.
Jenner didn't give a damn about phone calls and summer trips. He just wanted to be home, helping keep his family afloat. Instead, he was shipped off to the school in an attempt to learn "how a young boy should act when he is given such a fantastic gift as he's been given.", according to his mother.

I'd make him a tad younger, if you were me. 16 is the beginning of understanding. If he's 14, he'd be starting highschool and have problems catching up like you said. He'd also have the innocence you're portraying without sounding immature.
Can he use 2D shadows to blind people or only to distract? I guess I'm wondering, what good is the power?
Otherwise, pretty interesting. Our dudes have similarities, but I went for light.
We going to find out about where he came from and how he got his powers, or is that irrelevant?

I was contemplating the age thing myself. I think I'm going to bump him down to 14 like you said. It fits the way he's currently developed more, and it'll give me more time canonly to have him grow into himself.
The 2D shadows are more of a distraction than anything. I don't want to make those too strong, as the focus is what he can do with them in 3D form (though it's not much at this point.) He also uses them for a sort of comforting thing for himself. xD Otherwise they serve little purpose other than distraction.
I'm going to pop some info into his history about where he came from and how he got his powers, although the bulk of that is just he was born with it. I am gonna include a bit about his birth mom prior to the adoption too, but mostly that's just irrelevant details I want to add in. He was born with it, though. c: I debate on whether or not to introduce a shadowy father figure who's the cause of his abilities or not.

Since the shadows can get things for him, does this means it can wrap around things too, or cloak or strap/tie someone with it? Is that the 2d or the 3d that acts like an extension of him (the shadows that can acquire objects from far away)?

Yes to the first question. The shadows sort of act like an extended hand, in that they can wrap around things and pull them back, but once they're holding something, they have to stay 3D to pull it back to him. If they were to go 2D on the way back to him, either by lack of concentration or because he, y'know, faints from exertion... The object would just be dropped to the ground.
In theory, he could use the 3D shadows to constrict someone from moving, but this would require a lot of concentration because he's not only holding onto something, but he's holding onto something that is likely to try and pull away from him and fight the shadow off. So at this point, he's nowhere near capable of holding onto someone, but small objects like coins, balls, ect. could be held onto for a short amount of time.
It could be a mix of 2D and 3D when it comes to getting TO the object, for example like a string of 2D shadow that becomes 3D when it gets to the object to grab it, but like I said before, once it's grabbed, that's it. Either it stays 3D, or he loses concentration and drops the ball.

One super staff crit coming right up~!
Basics Name/Age/etc: No comment what-so-ever. The age is great, the name is fine, can't think of anything to mention ^w^ Except for the thing I just found: Have you decided on a gender? xD I think Rika made your semi very gender-neutral. Also, you're free to keep Penumbra as the rookie alias and change it once you reach sidekick/hero stage if you want ^w^ It's done all the time~
I'm curious about the story behind the hero-name, though?
Powers Eurgh, I'm in such a pickle here. I think shadow-manipulation is a great ability. However, I need to twist my own arm and point out that three different types of abilities is... a lot at the Rookie stage. I'm trying to justify it because it just works so awesome, but I have to point out that having three different "known" abilities is a bit overpowered for the first stage. I think I'd feel a bit better if Jenner hadn't learnt 3D manipulation yet, but it's the thing he begins to master as a rookie? Perhaps he is aware that he could do it with training, but hasn't been able to keep focused enough to do it yet? I can accept the shadow man thing because it isn't really an ability that he controls. As long as he doesn't really become aware of what it is until late-rookie/sidekick lvl... Idk, I really want to accept him the way he is, but I need to stay consistent with keeping rookies without too well-developed powers.
Personality/etc Love his backstory with being adopted. I think it might be the first adoptee we have. I quite like his personality, he seems balanced and realistic. Just a question, how is he with teachers? I mean, none of the mentors will accept him running his mouth, how would he deal with that??
I think Damien might actually kinda like this guy, though, if he doesn't run his mouth too much xD
I like his backstory, but again, you do need to adjust the abilities a little bit.

I was gonna add this in the trivia section in his journal. :3 Penumbra is a state during an Eclipse, where the sun is completely obscured by the moon. Basically, total darkness. I thought it was fitting, given his power, though it may change in the future. I did decide for the sake of easiness to keep his gender as a guy. XD Just so I don't have to go editing a bunch of gender-related stuff.
Shadow-Man won't be an ability he can USE until at least sidekick, although I'm really hoping to hold off on him becoming available until the Hero stage. I don't want him to get over his fear of Shadow-Man until he's spent some time at the academy.
With the 3D manipulation, I could edit it so while he knows he's capable of it, and probably used it once or twice, it's not something he falls back on as much as the 2D shadows? Part of the reason his parents are sending him away is because he's using what little 3D manipulation he has to steal little things, but even that took a lot of strain for him to do, so it's definitely something he has to work at to master even at this stage.
Or, if you prefer, I could edit that out entirely, and just have him sort of come into the academy without having really worked with his 3D manips. So basically he'd KNOW he can do it, but he hasn't really tried anything with it because it makes him really tired. It'd mean tweaking his history a bit, but I'm okay with that. xD
With teachers, they'd fall into the adult category for him. Namely, until he's more comfortable acting like himself, he'd act like the little Upper Sewitt boy his Momma raised. Polite, not too much mouth-running, ect. Around kids his own age, he'll run at the mouth, and with some IC development and the like I want him to get to be comfortable enough around the teachers to be a sort of sarcastic type, but he'll never be outright rude. His parents would be SO ASHAAAAAMED. D:
Also, unrelated, I'm sorry it was so long. >.> <.<

AACK. Mixed up the name, my bad.
Penumbra is before total darkness. basically when only a sliver of light is seen, casting a shadow during the eclipse. In latin it means "nearly shadow".
Mixed up because I was debating on Umbra (total darkness) and Penumbra, but decided on the latter. XD

Sorry, I got distracted by a show about humans trying to act like animals xDD
Anyways, dig the name, it's really cool! It wasn't an important aspect of the critique, I was just curious xD
And I'd definitely prefer if you adjusted it so he as a maximum had a vague sense that he might be able to do it (maybe something like his abilities have peaked once or twice when he got really angry, which might also be why his parents sent him off?) but he doesn't have any control over it?
Like I said, I'd love to accept him as-is, but I've been asking everyone else to "tone down" so I wouldn't be fair if I didn't ask you to do the same. Gomen.
I have no other comments than that ^w^ Once you have that detail worked out, I'll do another read-through, and if things look good, I'll approve you~ (just quote me or something)
