In a break with the normal schedule Val volunteered to go hunting. Normally if the goddess went hunting it was for herbs not for a meal but she wanted to keep her skills passable in the hunting department.

So on this fine day the goddess was currently hiding behind a rise. Her green pelt hidden in the shadows of the tall savanna grasses. Its true that she could have used illusions to hide but Val was proud of the fact that she could hunt like a normal mortal and she was determined to do so today. A antelope, zebra, or water buck would be a great kill so she ignored the rabbits that popped up every so often. Timing and patience was the key here.

While the green goddess was admiring her abilities on the hunt, Miramar was admiring himself for finally getting the hand of casting an illusion. It wasn't that he'd been unable to previously... he'd just simply had a hard time finding a reason why. But his meeting with the young cub had taught him that subtly could go a long way. And what was more subtle then a herdsbeast?

The tall, stately waterbuck leaned down and plucked a few blades of grass from the steppe. Grass was mostly tasteless, but most food was these days. A few of the other beasts seemed apprehensive of the dark stag, perhaps scenting something strange. Or perhaps he hadn't quite grasped how to communicate to them. The buck rose his head, chewing on the blades of grass in thought. It was something he'd have to look into. After all, he didn't just serve the greater species.

Shaking his head, Miramar returned back down to the grass, lazily plucking the blades as he organized his thoughts for the day. Meanwhile, some of the more savvy herdsbeasts started to drift away- perhaps, sensing something in the distance...

Val spotted some likely prey in the distance, a small herd of waterbuck. Most of them seemed uneasy, possible sensing Val close?, but there was one that became more alone as the others drifted away. It was a tall and stately waterbuck the color of rich red, brown dirt with an interesting marking on his shoulder.

With a slight smile Val begin to creep closer and closer. Pausing when ever it appeared that her chosen prey would have noticed the shadow moving closer. She had to stop just outside of pouncing distance because her cover of grass became trampled and eaten too low. It appeared this was going to end up being a chase, not that it bothered her any. With one last moment to collect herself she rushed out of the concealing grass and rushed towards the brown waterbuck unaware of the serious surprise awaiting her.

Miramar was happily crunching away on the tasteless substance. Even though he was about twenty seconds from realizing the inherent downside to this brilliant plan, for the moment it seemed like the best thing he'd ever thought up of. No doubt the other herdbeast thought him foolish. Such a large, handsome buck hanging around and waiting to be eaten! [Suicidal, they'd whisper! How had he lived for so long!] He'd need to learn their language better.

The waterbuck only became aware of the lioness approaching his flank at the point that, for most creatures, it would have been too late. But he had one thing that most herdbeast did not: he was no waterbuck. Instinct did not compel him to flee. Instead, he rounded about as she pounced, turning upon the lioness and rearing back on his hindlegs.

He suddenly had a feeling he'd be eating much less meat from then on.

Rather than fight, he simply brandished his horns forward, and offered a quick warning: You would be unwise to try that, my lady. As if to reinforce the threat, he stamped his hoof on the ground. The grass seemed slightly greener where it fell.

Behind him, the rest of the beast stampeded away. A few however, seemed rather shocked to see the buck face down the other. He truly was mad, they thought!

The only thing that truly saved Val was the fact that the water buck was just a bit farther away then her pouncing distance. She was headed for him at a decent lion speed but she had expected the herbivore to turn and run like the rest of its herd was doing, instead it faced her and brandished his horns. She was so shocked that even hearing a voice in her head did little to register. She had never met a herbivore that was willing to attack rather then flee.

She immediately tried to stop and found that she didn't have enough to grip on the grass and dirt. In a few short seconds she was going to find herself impaled on those horns unless she could come up with something drastic. Well Val did think of something drastic, something that she didn't want to use on this hunting trip, her inherent god powers.

With a soft pop and a swirl of wind the green lioness disappeared just inches from the waterbuck. A few seconds later the pop repeated itself along with the wind from the displaced air but this time it came from behind the waterbuck. A quick teleportation like that had her ears ringing and apparently she didn't aim correctly since she appeared a few feet from the ground. Not expecting such a occurrence Val tumbled through the air and landed square on her back. "Damn it. Next time I'm checking to see where I'm going to land." Val grumbled as she tried to shake the stars from her vision.

The waterbuck shook his antlers, watching as the lioness seemingly appeared and disappeared in front of him. It probably would have surprised him more, had immortals not seemed to congregate around him these days. How was it that mortals could go their entire lives not knowing of the gods, and yet here he was practically tripping over them!

And this one had tried to eat him! He wondered if he should be flattered. The buck's tail twitched, and he politely pawed at the earth. You should be more careful, my lady. I doubt a fall would bring you harm... but there is no sense in not taking care.

The tall stag rounded, approaching the lioness with a much less aggressive posture. Are you alright? He asked. Perhaps needlessly, but Miramar was always a courteous fellow. A god might not be injured by a simple fall, but prides were easily bruised. And he had absolutely no ability in healing that. I cannot say I'm much better at that trick. First time I vanished anywhere I had to struggle a bit to come back!

Val slowly flipped over and started to climb to her feet. "Yeah don't I know it. Patching up my own hide is not the thing I wanted to do today." She answered the voice before realizing that it was said telepathically. Her movements became quick as she got to her feet completely and began to look around for the owner of the 'voice' but there was no one other then the waterbuck.

Wait a minute. She thought to herself as her eyes narrowed in speculation. She absently answered his other question, "I'm fine just a bit embarrassed." while Val mentally came to a decision. "It does take a bit of practice but its the quickest way to move about on my herb hunting expeditions. I have to admit though talking telepathically is something new, that and a damn good waterbuck illusion." Her smile was wide and friendly. It might have taken her until he talked to her mind to mind to realize this male was not normal, her first clue should have been when he didn't react the way the rest of his 'herd' was.

"The name is Val... Valetudo'sero, goddess of herb lore at your service. Sorry about trying to kill you." She nodded in greeting and apology. How else was one to apologize for almost killing someone?
