I have a question, its kind of embarressing, but here goes nothin!!

I myself have always been partial to pads, but this summer I got my period when we went on vacation. I really wanted to go swimming, so I tried a tampon. It really hurt putting it in! Eventually I got it right but I was a little uncomfortable all day. Ever since then I've used tampons once in a while, but it always hurts inserting them and I always feel concious that its in there and I'm uncomfortable. neutral

So my question, well questions actually, are:
Is it normal that it hurts to put a tampon in?
When I do have sex, will it be even more painful? I mean, if I can't handle a tampon, how can I handle anything even larger? sweatdrop

Friendly advice is appreciated!

Well, think about it, if it's biger and constantly moving around don't you think it would hurt? Maby you should try masturbating more, and slowing trying to add more fingers in, or just try using tampons.

Check out the stickies, there's tampon and pad information in the Puberty Sticky. I don't use tampons myself, but I've heard that if you can feel it that distinctly, then you haven't put it in properly. Though yes it's normal for it to hurt.

As for sex relating to using tampons, there is no relation. It can hurt to put a tampon in, but you can be fine during sex, and vice versa. It probably hurts to insert a tampon because you're nervous (etc) and are therefore tense, so if you are tense and nervous or anxious during sex, then that might hurt too. It depends on the person.

I agree with Nikolita but I think she meant to say "I don't use tampons" rather then pads. Anyway, My experiences were just like yours. I don't use tampons often and I'm usually not all that comfortable but sex is not a problem so don't worry too much about it. It's much easier when you are aroused and things stretch with heavy petting. Try not to stress, it's normal.

I've noticed that while applying tampons, you have to do it a certain way or it hurts. The best way to do it is while sitting on the toilet to pull apart your legs as much as you can and stand up a little (so you look kind of silly), and then take the tampon, (I use OB, so there is no applicator), feather out the end of it by sticking your finger in and fluffing it out a little, and then put it on the tip of your forefinger (whichever is more comfortable) and then put your finger in a crooked position (with the finger bent so it's pointing back at yourself) and then slide it in at an angle like this

Side view: (this is not technically that graphic, considering it was drawn by me in paint)

If you slide it at this angle and then inside, it will usually be less painful.

Also, consider the size of tampons you're using. If you're young and you have light periods, there are tons of tampons that will absorb smaller amounts and take up less space in your v****a.

Hope that was kinda helpful sweatdrop

Yeah I went back and edited my post. redface I did mean to say "I don't like tampons."

I second the motion for use the teeny tiny ones. They're called 'Junior' tampons by Tampax, and Kotex has a 'gentle glide' brand that helps with the insertion. Oh, if you're not using 'tubed' tapmons, try those. They're easier in the beginning if you're not used to it.

Tampax uses cardboard and lets be simple: paper + v****a = irritation. Even it's coated (it is) it can make it hurt more. Just relax and un-clench, it helps a lot.

And as many people have said, sex probably won't be a big issue. Being aroused makes lube happen, and with lube, all insertions are easier smile

If you're still young, then that's fine. When I was younger and I first got my period, I had to use tampons 'cos we did swimming at school and I didn't want to stand out. It hurt when I used them at first, but now I've got used to it and I'm fine with it. wink
