The feather was just out of reach. It was caught boughs of a large mangrove, quivering with each small gusts of wind that threatening to send it spiraling away and into the swamp mud. Oh, it would be such a shame for it to be ruined like that. Not when she had such good plans for it.

Be Mine was using the tree trunk to lean on as she lifted her front legs off the ground and tried, unsuccessfully, to get a hold of the feather with her tongue. Orange and yellow, it shimmered in the light that trickled through the canopy and shifted precariously closer to being torn free.

The filly stopped straining for a moment, letting her front hooves come back down to touch the solid roots off the tree. That feather would be the perfect addition to Vexed’s collection and she so wanted to be able to gift it. The pink and green feather that the adult female had given her was still hanging on just behind Be Mine’s ear as a constant reminder of the others kindness.

Where was Fall For You? He would have been able to get it down easy. But the Songbird was away, most likely wooing his latest crush. She would just have to keep trying.

Now what was a young, pretty thing like that doing with her tongue flailing about in the air? Was she sick? Diseased? Had she rolled down a hill when she'd still be in the sac? The buck lazily was itching his flank against another nearby tree, ignoring the disgruntled chirp of Tree Song. The companion reproachfully plucked at some of his rumpled mane.

"There's much easier, nicer things to eat, you know," He drawled after a moment, pushing himself off the trunk and approaching the filly with a lazy, almost sluggish gait. If there was one thing that could be said, it was that Sturdy Oak never passed up an opportunity to settle his own curiosity.

It was only then that he spotted the feather, practically gleaming in the sun's generous, dusty light. "Oh ho! A pretty trinket for a pretty girl, then. You have a good eye for beauty~" He didn't quite croon, but his deep tone was unmistakably flattering. He had no real interest, of course--she was but a child, still! Does enjoyed being petted and pampered, however, and he could never resist the opportunity to practice.

Be Mine very nearly fell off the tree root when the male voice shot through her thoughts. But to her credit she recovered quickly enough, wobbling on her perch as she turned her head to blink owlishly at Study Oak.

“Hello…” She didn’t respond to the flattery as perhaps he would have hoped, the filly simply watching him curiously for a moment before smiling and shaking her head. “It’s not for me. It’s for a friend. But thankyou…” She was rather pleased with his word simply because it meant her choice was a good one.

With a sweet grin and a wrinkling of her nose, she left her mangrove root perch in order to join him on the ground. “Could you… help me get it down?” She inquired, looking up at him hopefully.

He had to blink when he realized he'd nearly startled the filly into taking a tumble onto the earth below, but fortunately it seemed as though she could balance well on her hooves. A grin quirked oddly at his muzzle at her words, and he tilted his head from side to side, clearly debating.

"A friend, eh? Generous of you. I think I could help you out, little lady. Wouldn't be any scales off my nose. Tree Song~?" He glanced imploringly over his shoulder, his grin widening a tad at the reproachful look he received. Still, his companion wouldn't refuse him, easily flitting up and nabbing the feather cleverly in his beak.

Swooping back to perch on Oak's head, the buck gingerly lowered the bird to the filly's level, and if she reached to take it, he would let the feather go. "There you are, love. Nothin' to it."

When Tree Song popped up off the males back, Be Mine looked utterly delighted. The filly dipped her head politely to the bird when the feather was offered. “I’m so sorry! I didn’t realize you were there. Thank you so very much.” She carefully reached out and took the feather from the bird, using her tongue to move it into a position where she could still talk without it slipping free of her grasp.

Ears perked up in delight, she watched Tree Song for a moment longer before looking back at Oak with a smile. “Your help is greatly appreciated. I would have lost is otherwise.” She studied him with an innocently, curious gaze. She didn’t get to spend much time around bucks. There had once been her father and her brother, but she had not seen them since the flood and that was something she tried not to think too much about.

My name is Be Mine.”

The colorful bird puffed himself up with pride at the acknowledgement and thanks, twittering cheerfully at the filly even as he burrowed back into Oak's tangled, matted locks. Being appreciated was such a nice thing, wasn't it? Something that the buck could learn about, just a little bit.

"It wasn't nothin'," Oak said breezily enough, chuckling a little even as there was a n** against his ear. Tree Song clearly did not approve of his flippant nature. "I'm called Sturdy Oak. This here is Tree Song, but I'm sure you pieced that together."

With a flick of his tail, he tilted his head, considering something. "You've got a friend that likes pretty trinkets, eh?

As was her habit she repeated their names slowly, as if committing them deep into her heart. “Sturdy Oak and Treesong…” She nodded, pleased. Hopefully Fall For You would turn up soon so he could meet the other songbird, but if not she would just tell him all about it later.

With a happy grin she turned her head to show him the pinkish feather that was stuck carefully on with tree sap. “Yes I do! She collects feathers. She has so many wonderful ones and she even gave me this one…” She let out a happy little sigh.

“I want to give her something in return. Do you think she will like it?”
