It was a foreign landscape, the kitchen. Sure, Kaia knew where everything was, and what it was all for, but Khaldun had no real memory of how kitchens even worked. This morning, though, he was trying to impress her by making her tea. He'd watched her making this tea enough times that he felt reasonably sure he could do it too. It was just hot water, water didn't catch on fire. At least, he'd never seen it happen before.
He'd dragged a kitchen chair over to the stove to watch the whole water-boiling process carefully, and he had prepared a mug with no less than four tags hanging over the edge of it. One teabag just didn't look like it was going to be enough. He stared the teapot the whole time, as if daring it to do something besides heat the water. Making tea was a lot more complicated than teleporting, to his chagrin.
It was all going so well until the kettle started whistling, destroying the element of surprise.

As the shrill, loud whistle rang out through the apartment, it woke Kaia from the fog of her hazy half dreams and had her crashing into reality quickly. Even from the bedroom, the whistle of the tea kettle was unmistakable. If Khaldun was any other person, she would have rolled back over in bed and not even thought about it. However, Khaldun was about as familiar with the kitchen as she was with a car motor.
Not to mention the last time he was in there he had completely destroyed the blender.
Quicker to rise than she was even normally, Kaia grabbed the robe hanging from the back of the door and threw it over her nightie. A half tie later and she was opening the bedroom door slowly, testing the air for any smell of burning anything - food, hair, clothes, Khal. The lack of it was surprising and relieving and she was soon around the corner and watching her boyfriend as he stared down the whistling pot.
She realized the surprise in this was not only that he was attempting to cook something, but that he was also up before her.
Ignoring her urge to take the teapot off of the stove herself and finish making her own tea, Kaia sidled up quietly beside him and leaned her arms on the kitchen island. She had realized between the tea kettle and the slightly-overstuffed mug that he was attempting to make tea, and she knew that he wasn't much of a tea drinker himself. It didn't take a lot to put two and two together.
"You're up early," she commented through a curious smile, tilting her head just slightly at him and finding the nerve to look away from the stove for more than a few seconds. Maybe nothing would burst into flames.

Once he'd turned off the burner, Khaldun was busy lifting the teapot off the stove with as much care as if he was defusing a bomb. With all the noise and distraction he hadn't noticed her come into the kitchen. He caught her gaze for a moment and a guilty smile started to form before he turned back to the incredibly complex task of pouring hot water into a mug.
"Yes I am," he replied matter-of-fact. If she wanted to get technical, he hadn't actually slept. Experience taught him how to make the most careful use of starseeds to maintain himself over days if he had to. Sure, it probably was the earliest Kaia had ever seen him awake before, but would it really make her suspicious? Khal didn't have a lot of experience being romantic for longer than a day, so he was careful to make sure everything went according to plan. The plan that he came up with last night right before he'd begged his brother to fund it.
He picked the mug up by the handle and walked it toward the island to set it down next to Kaia. He glanced down at it again, suddenly uncertain. "Do you put anything else in this?"

She slid carefully onto one of the bar stools, tucking her summer robe around her as she did. She had a feeling she would insult him if she tried to do any of this herself, so she was happy just to sit and bask in this tiny treat. She would relish his small attempt at romance, just because she knew it was a big leap for him. The little things went a long way between them.
"Just to make me tea?" She didn't miss the smile on his face and she mirrored it with her own, one that grew wider every time she tried to relax. It was just incredibly sweet of him. Her hands stretched out in front of her a little to work the stiffness of sleep out of her arms and then drew back to her lap, falling and lacing together to prevent herself from fidgeting. Letting anyone do anything for her was a huge leap, but she was learning to give him a little room to try.
"Oh, milk and a little sugar actually." She reached out her hands for the hot mug and slid it closer, carefully, eyeing the darkening liquid with an appreciation that overrode her misgivings. It was probably ridiculously strong from the look and smell of it; she would need to doctor it a little more than normal, but he'd never know the difference. She just curled her pale fingers around the warming ceramic and toyed idly with the bag strings while she waited for him to inevitably start looking for what she'd asked for.
"Thank you though," and she seemed entirely sincere and moved by the tiny act as she spoke, "this is sweet, Khal." She was honestly surprised.

"Actually..." he began, looking around the kitchen. It took him a little time to remember where exactly Kaia kept the sugar. He didn't go poking around much besides the fridge when he was in here, himself. He was relieved she was happy about the tea, and was glad to have an excuse to hide his face in a cupboard to conceal his involuntary grin when she thanked him. His ego was starting to swell a bit now, competitively. Her last boyfriend would have nothing on him after today. That guy probably never made Kaia tea. He probably didn't even know she liked tea. Hah.
"I was thinking," he talked as he crossed to both sides of the kitchen to retrieve the sugar and milk before setting them down in front of Kaia, "If you wanted to go somewhere today, we could. If you're up for it, I mean. Just... out. For a couple hours. Since we're both already up."
Mission fulfilled, he pulled one of the barstools out for himself and sat down across from her. He didn't say anything else, just watched her with a sort of hopeful look that probably gave away what little was left of his game.

While he was trying to find the couple of things she had asked for, she toyed with the strings of the tea bags and blew softly across the top of the steaming tea. The longer he took, the steadily darker it was getting and the more she was glad tea wasn't lethal in large doses.
At least he found the milk and sugar in a semi-timely manner.
She slid the milk over and gave him a brief glance to show she was paying attention as she started to pour. He managed to distract her for all of a few seconds though and she glanced up, curious and surprised - just long enough to shift her hand and pour a big splash of milk all over the counter between them.
"Great," she groaned at herself, forgoing answering him for a moment so she could slide off the stool and grab paper towels from the counter close by. She was back in a second, mopping it up and thinking about what he was possibly getting at. She seemed to be fairly pensive. Khal wanted to go out, in public? And do something? As she slid the used paper towels to the side and picked up the sugar to finish doctoring her tea, a suspicious but amused smile spread slowly over her lips.
"That sounds like it could be fun." She glanced back up at him over the top of her mug as she lifted it up and took one long, slow sip. It wasn't bad, just.. very strong, even beneath the milk and sugar. She was still smiling though as she brought it away from her lips and let it rest in the palms of her hands.
"Did you have a plan?" The look she leveled on him said that she didn't trust his nonchalant suggestions. She took another sip of her tea and then set the mug down, leaning forward a little across the island top so she could look up into his dark eyes expectantly. "Or are we being spontaneous today?"

The way she was silent and brooding as she cleaned up at first had him worried that something about his offer had annoyed or offended her. As it was, he didn't really know what the rules were for dating or what stuff he was supposed to do or not do to appease Kaia beforehand. Taking the step beyond friends into something more was easier the first night, before it really set in how little he knew about how to be what she wanted him to be. None of the movies Khal watched had any romance that wasn't upstaged by big explosions and car chases, which were far more interesting to watch anyway. Sure, he could probably arrange that kind of thing if he wanted to be in his element, but Kaia never seemed to like those movies much.
Not that he really thought he was any more on target with his actual destination for the pair of them - but it was the only thing he could think of doing. Almost every night they went on patrol together, he saw her look up at the stars in a way he could never understand. It was a reminder that she was something different than he was, corrupt but still ultimately a senshi. She'd proven her loyalty to the Negaverse cause; there was no harm in indulging her alien interests just this once. He owed it to her to keep her happy. He'd been helpless to stop it before, and he'd even been the cause of her unhappiness once - he wasn't going to let either happen again.
He relaxed again when she started playfully questioning him. He didn't even realize he'd been leaning in those few seconds of worry as she'd stood up from the counter, curling his fingers around the edge of the island, until she suddenly leaned in as well. He let his hands slide over the rim and come to rest crossed over Kaia's as she cupped the mug.
"A little bit of both," he teased. Kaia's hands were warm from the heat rolling off the tea, and so small that his own darker hands completely hid them from view. He always seemed a little reluctant to let go of these moments, but eventually he released her hands and got ready to get up from the makeshift table. "Let me know when you're ready to go."

As his hands closed around hers and pressed her palms against the warm tea, a soft blush rose to the apples of her pale cheeks. They had changed their relationship in the span of a few moments and, despite the fact that she had spent the majority of that first night curled up comfortably against him, she had started over thinking gestures that were so very simple. Not over thinking in the bad way, just complicating them unnecessarily with her own nerves.
Her hands flexed beneath his, shifting to brush the backs of her hands against his palms very slightly. Despite the blush on her face, she smiled at his teasing and tilted her head at him just a little with her curiosity. It was rare that he managed to be subtle or secretive with her, but she had no idea what he was planning. Even if she didn't know, she was still impressed. Khal taking initiative was.. new.
"Alright, I'll go get ready in a minute." She followed him with her eyes as he stood and walked past her. She sat there for a moment simply staring into her tea, trying to decide what he could possibly be doing. Then she just gave up, took another long sip of her tea, and resigned to a rushed shower.
She was in her room looking through her wardrobe in no time, though it looked like picking an outfit was going to be a chore. She had no doubt that whatever Khal was planning was probably his idea of a date and even if she admittedly didn't think it was going to be anything fancy, she still wanted to show him she thought enough of it to look nice. Part of her really wished she could just sneak Ashley in for help, then.
She slumped onto the edge of her bed and stared with a full-on pout at her wardrobe, as if she could will it to part and show her some glorious outfit she couldn't put together alone. The problem was that she knew she didn't have to do anything to impress Khal, and consequently didn't want to over do it and make him feel uncomfortable. She groaned lightly to herself then and simply got up to search through her clothes again.
When she finally came out (she had taken nearly twice as long in the bedroom as she had in the shower) she was sporting a simple a-line skirt that fell above her knees in light fabric and a detailed tank tucked into it. It was something she'd worn a dozen times before and felt comfortably normal in, though she could never quite tell what she was getting into with this new territory they had exposed.
"I'm ready," even as she tried to appear casual she smiled involuntarily and glanced towards the door, willing away a blush, "finally." Inwardly she was kicking herself. Something about their relationship was working backwards. She knew Khal and she knew how he reacted to things, but with the change in their status had come a need to slightly adjust everything between them and even if some of it came easily to her, the parts that she would be unfamiliar with in any relationship were still terribly awkward.
Like how to dress appropriately for a mystery date.
She crossed the space to the couch with her shoes in hand, then flopped down so that she could pull the flats on easily. She didn't know if he was ready (probably, he didn't put much thought into it) but it was a good reason to waste time in case he had something to do.

No surprises just yet for Kaia. The teen had wandered out of sight, checking on the tickets he'd shoved in his pocket: slightly crinkled but still okay. What had Kaia fretting in the bedroom was always a no-brainer for him. Khal probably wouldn't know dressy if it slapped him across the face. Even when Kaia tried to get him to buy new and nicer clothes, he only ever seemed to want to wear t-shirts, hoodies, sneakers, and jeans until they were too full of holes. Today was no different, possibly even a little more threadbare than usual in one knee.
The tickets vanished back into his pocket when he heard Kaia announce herself. He let his civilian guise fade away and his Negaverse uniform replace it, then strode back into the main room where Kaia was putting on her shoes. He looked a little nervous but mostly just ecstatic Kaia was going along with it the way he'd imagined. Even he knew he didn't improvise well when things went wrong. "Hey, there's no rush."
"But... let's take a shortcut," Hematite glanced at her mischievously, feeling confident. He'd scoped out their destination recently. He knew a lot of old, abandoned spots in Destiny City from running around them and through them. Teleporting made getting places so much less of a hassle now, too, giving them a whole new purpose during daylight hours. As gently as he could with a metal gauntlet, he took Kaia's hand in his and helped her to her feet. After a brief lurch through darkness the apartment around them was replaced by a dark and dusty room behind a boarded-up store window, with light leaking in through the cracks A moment after that there was no jet black metal separating their fingers, and Khal was just Khal again.

"I'm not-" she began to counter, until she slipped on her second shoe and glanced at him over her shoulder. His negaverse uniform surprised her and made her instantly suspicious of whatever he had planned. Though her eyes narrowed a little and one brow arched in a silent question, she let him take her hand in his and pull her carefully to her feet.
She only had a second to stare up into his dark eyes before the world lurched and she was standing suddenly in a very.. unwelcoming building. She didn't recognize it, at least not from the inside, and though she was never quite sure what Khal was planning to surprise her with, she immediately wrote the place off. This didn't seem like it would be any grand destination. It did make her start questioning him inwardly even more however because this was clearly a step in something he had put true effort into planning. Effort and Khal were surprising just in the same sentence.
He was trying, for her. As that realization hit her and he was suddenly standing in front of her as a civilian again, her hand tightened around his darker one until she could lace her fingers through his. So the old dusty building wasn't really that romantic - she could look past that and be impressed with its place in his plan.
"You're full of surprises today, did you know that?" Her brows raised a little at him, still curious, but the smile that turned up the corners of her lips was warm even through her teasing. She squeezed her hand around his for emphasis, then glanced around at the shop that seemed to surround them on all sides.
"How do we get out of a building that's been boarded up?"

It was hard to see his face in the dark but she could hear him laugh quietly, maybe a little nervously. "That's the idea."
"Oh, through the front door. Lock's busted." He was already walking her over to it, stepping carefully over the debris strewn around the floor. Chunks of the wall and ceiling were carved out by what could only have been supernatural forces, scattering wood and ceiling tiles across the floor. He spoke casually but distantly about the place, navigating in the dark simply by running his empty hand along one wall. "It's been like this for years I guess. Almost as long as I can remember. I've had to hide here before a few times as a lieutenant. Lost some fights to super senshi, zodiacs... at least until we got rid of them for a while."
Aside from the occasional complaint that was more criticism than contemplation, Khaldun didn't actually go out of his way to mention a lot about his life in the early Negaverse. By the time he'd met Kaia he was over a year into captaincy, not some struggling, pathetic lieutenant. Khaldun gave the front door a shove and the protesting hinges gave way to blinding daylight. When their eyes adjusted, they were looking out onto the heart of downtown Destiny City.
Mentally he tried to map the way to their destination, orienting himself with the landmarks. Finally pointed down the street. "It's just two more blocks from here, to the left."
Once they had melded into the crowd, still linked hand in hand, he began to move closer to Kaia involuntarily. There were people all around them, boxing them in. Jostling them. Yelling on their cell phones. His hand was tensing up in hers, then holding on like a vicegrip. He was painfully out of his element like this, but he just kept pushing forward.

His laugh had made her smile, though the shadowy darkness that blanketed the room probably hid that from him. She didn't hesitate to follow him as he pulled her through the debris on the floor, though she did frown at the holes blasted into every surface of the building. It looked like a war zone. Had a senshi forced this place to shut down by dragging the battle inside? She was thinking about that and what a tragedy that would have been for the owner when he was suddenly giving her one of those rare glimpses into his life.
"Zodiacs," she echoed softly, not quite a question though it was laced with curiosity. She had seen them at a distance as both a member of the Moon Kingdom and a weapon of the Negaverse, but she didn't know them. They were a mystery to her, as was their history with Earth.
Before she could ask further, the door was swung open and they were bathed in light. As she stared out at the street, she realized quickly that she had absolutely no idea where they were, and her eyes glanced up at him just in time to see the concentration on his face. She was worried for a split second that he might have gotten them lost despite his familiarity with the building itself, but then he was spouting directions and pulling her out into the street.
A smile curled on her lips as they took their place among the crowd - until she felt the tightening pressure around her hand, a grip so hard that it was almost painful. The smile faded as she tried to shuffle through the crowd and simultaneously keep him from squeezing the circulation out of her fingers. She threw one quick glance up at his face before she decided to slide closer to him and bring her free hand up to touch his forearm. Her thumb stroked gently against the inside of his elbow in an attempt to bring his focus back to her and away from the crowd.
She either had to calm him down or hope they got wherever they were going quickly.
"Khal," it was a soft, worried voice that barely registered above the drone of the crowd, "I'm right here."

There was very little reason in his mind why he shouldn't resort to violence each time he was bumped and pushed and stepped on. His free hand was already balling into a fist. Was it too late to consider teleporting all the way there? He was already imagining simply power up right then and draining energy out of the people around them till he could carve a path. The idea of cops showing up wasn't nearly as awful as he felt here, now, holding back his perfectly sensible instincts for Kaia's sake. Because for a few hours today they were just another pair of humans doing regular human things. Just... normal people. It was actually really hard to fake something that seemed so natural for everyone else, he was remembering with more than a little dread. Hillworth had beaten that hope out of him after years of barely surviving all kinds of confusing situations, leaving violence his only safe, predictable option. How Kaia masked herself so well, he couldn't even imagine. His gaze jumped around the sea of faces and hair, as if hoping that at any moment an exit would open up and they'd be out of the claustrophobic mess.
And then he picked out the distinctive buzz of her voice from the audial assault of city sounds, felt her other hand on his arm. It made him turn his head slightly so that his gaze could tear away from the crowd and fixate on Kaia instead, the only thing familiar and safe in this horrible place. His grip relaxed slightly, just enough that Kaia wasn't going to lose her fingers. Getting him to let go completely probably wasn't going to happen, though. He was treating her hand like a lifeline, it had already quickly become an instrument more to ease his discomfort than to guide her anywhere. He'd forgotten how much he hated being in crowds, and he could barely control all the panic that rose inside of him with every moment the situation was out of his control. Any other day, any other reason, and he'd never come here at all. He came out at night, or he teleported where he needed to go, or he got into fights when people got in his face, and it all worked for him just fine. So much for trying to impress her with this and thinking he could actually do something for her without making a complete fool of himself . He was just getting worked up and it was his own damn fault.
"Kaia," he exhaled. Distraction was already setting in again and he couldn't force his expression for very long. He just looked anxious. "So uh, next time we'll just take the bus."

"We have to be close, right? Just a little longer?" She wasn't exactly comfortable in a crowd, but her own discomfort was outweighed by Khal's. When he needed her there, she was, and she could put off her own problems to take care of him. That's what she always did.
The crowd around her vanished as she looked up at him, relieved that he could surface from his anxiety long enough to look at her and calm himself down at least minimally. Abstract problems were harder for her to take care of than the obvious ones, like when he was stretched out and bleeding on a couch - she could deal with that. This was a little trickier, but she could try to fix it. She would try to fix it.
"Next time we'll just teleport closer, wherever it is we're going." The words didn't have much point other than trying to keep his attention on her instead of on the crowd of strangers. She shifted closer until she could lean a little into his arm, holding it against her and rolling with the idea that more physical contact would relax him. If not relax him, at least distract him.
Her eyes swung out momentarily to the crowd as they jostled around them. She was sure all the eyes were on them, probably for any variety of reasons associated with their appearances. Instead of letting herself fall victim to the paranoia, however, she just squeezed her hands in Khal's and glanced back at him. She had no idea where they were going anyway, so the best she could do was let her feet follow his.

"Yeah," he echoed, his attention fading fast. She nearly lost him again, until he felt her press close to his side. A surge of protectiveness ran through him, and pulled him together again. For Kaia's sake, he had to get through this. His fingers flexed a little in her grip to squeeze back as gently as he could, returning the small gesture of comfort they shared when they were out in public. "Yeah, it's real close."
They finally had their chance to break away from the crowd when they reached the base of a concrete staircase where people milled and sat above the street level. They walked up the steps to a squat 2-story building with a large dome rising above it. Khal had never been inside it before in his life - so far as he could remember, at least. Hillworth certainly didn't go in for many field trips, especially not for their... less promising students. Not that he minded. He hated being shepherded along on educational tours of anything. So it was always just some funny looking piece of scenery, a stage for a fight, mostly forgettable. Turned out all this time, it was the Air and Space Museum. Still a huge yawn, for him. For Kaia, though, he just kept hoping she liked space... and air.
They hovered briefly in front of the admissions area while he fished the tickets out of his pocket with his free hand and offered them to Kaia. If she hadn't yet figured out where they were, the name of the museum was printed across the tickets over a background of stars glinting in the night sky. Khal scrutinized her reaction, mostly clearing out of her bubble of personal space. It was beyond his ability to predict the way Kaia would react. That kind of mystery was exciting and alluring in a lot of ways to him, but whenever he actually thought too much on it he wished that he just knew exactly how to make her happy. All he had to offer her today was a guess. "Surprise?"
