 Chai had fussed for weeks to get the nest just right but in the end it had been worth it. It was filled with soft down and other bits and bobs that helped keep their eggs warm. In addition to this, Medium Chai Latte had made certain improvements to make sure their kids wouldn't flee the nest too early. The inside looked fairly normal by pidge standards, but the sides of the nest looked as if they were meant to stand up to a siege. The sturdy wall was constructed by twigs, broken pencils, pieces of cardboard and... well... everything but the kitchen sink. Chai wouldn't be herself if she didn't include a bit of inventing with the nest building. There was a lower "door" on one side, giving the parent roosting a chance to watch the outside world, but the other walls were high enough to hide the adult inside if one looked at the nest from the wrong angle.
"Oh, you lot will hatch any day now," she said to her silent eggs, "I can feel it."
Tobeko would hopefully be here to keep her company and take his turn on the eggs soon, but until then Chai talked to herself and her eggs. She was sure they could hear her, even if they couldn't possibly understand what she was saying just yet. Four lovely little eggs... The walls would be needed once they hatched, she was sure.

 Tobeko hobbled back to where Chai had been building their nest for the past few weeks as soon as he got off duty watching the little poofs of others. He had a surprise for her, an egg he had taken to take care of, it's parents sadly killed. He carefully rolled the fragile thing more breakable then a sparkly orb and far more precious towards the nest. As he got close enough for the nest Chai had worked her very hardest on to come into view he called to her.
"D-dearest! I'm h-home!" he called, "I-i've... brought a little so-something home with me." he was uneasy. She had already four eggs and this one would make a fifth addition to their not so little family, she was a kind pidge he knew but he was nervous that his big heart might hurt him in this case. After all, five little poof would be a handful! He looked up to watch for Chai to look over the high nest wall and see it for herself.

Ah, there he was! Chai rose carefully from her precious eggs and hopped up to perch on the lowest side of the nest. She stretched one wing and preened an out of place feather. She'd fly for a bit later after Tobeko took her place in the nest. It wasn't too bad, sitting on eggs, but she really needed to loosen up her joints after a long sitting. But this little stretch and the company of her mate would do for now. She wanted to spend some time with him and not just dash off at once.
"Welcome home love," she said and greeted her mate with a smile, "You brought a gift, how thoughtf..."
She didn't get any further than that before actually seeing what Tobeko was carrying. An egg. Why would he carry an egg? He had never brought the job home before so why start now? And weren't his charges usually hatched already? And... But...
"I'm not sure I understand," she said and cocked her head. It was probably better to let him explain that to try to guess.

"W-well," said Tobe, "This little on i-i-is an orphan, one of several. It-it's parents were found dead a-and when I heard I-i just had to take it." he rolled the egg closer. "I-i thought since o-our little ones may h-hatch at the same t-time, we could r-raise it with them." he gently patted the little egg with his wing. "T-that way, they would n-never know...P-p-poor little thing has no one in the world."

Chai blinked a few times, taking a moment to let this new information sink in. A small part of her was upset that Tobeko hadn't asked her before bringing the egg over, but how could she possibly refuse? Oh, bless is enormous heart. There seemed to be a place for everyone in there. Good thing she built this huge stick-fortress of a nest then, because they would certainly need the room.
"Oh, get over here you," she finally said, stepping to the side to give her mate room to enter the nest with her. It was spacious enough that they should be able to fit in there together. All seven of them... At least until the eggs hatched. "But next time... Please, please, talk to me before agreeing to do something like this."
Chai hoped there would be no similar "next time" but she also knew her mate. He'd probably keep bringing in strays in one form or another.

"I-i will d-dearest." said Tobe with a smile and carefully rolled the egg in place next to the rest of the clutch. He stood back and looked them all over, beaming. "W-well we'll certanly h-have no bor-boring days when they h-hatch." he chuckled. "G-going to be wonderful."
