Penelope allowed her hand to trail across the dusty bookshelf, her fingers pausing here and there to ghost over a title that appeared particularly interesting. Soon she should come across the book that she... ah-ha, there it was!
She pulled out the volume, peering at the number pasted on its side before examining the cover and confirming that it was the correct book. The novel she was reading at home was a re-telling of a supposedly "true" ghost story, but as she did not know the original, she felt it would be worth her time to take a look at it. She rarely came fully into the supernatural section of the library, but judging from the the amount of titles her seeking fingers had highlighted, the teenager would definitely consider coming back.
For now, though, she popped open her book to skim the table of contents and allowed the chapter titles to absorb all of her attention.

Down the same aisle as the student with curly black hair, Harper was busy examining the list on the opposite end. She sat on the linoleum floor, daintily aware of her skirt folds, though in a manner that came as an unconscious second nature than conscious concern -- for she was, after all, on the dirty floor. Next to her was a short stack of two books. There were three titles scribbled on the list. She mouthed the numbers and letters of the call number until they were quickly memorized, freeing her of the awkward up and down bobbing motion that generally makes patrons look like chickens in a yard. Not that it was all bad -- she liked chickens -- but it would eventually give her a headache. Besides, in her two years at Crystal Academy so far, she had become rather familiar with this section of the library and was getting an idea of where the call numbers usually ended up on the shelf.
Gathering up her two books, Harper trawled down the aisle, eventually becoming rather close to the other student who was now examining a book of her own. Harper didn't begrudge her for the act, but she was also on the hunt.
"Excuse me," she interrupted softly, standing up, "could I search through here?"

Penelope had been completely engrossed with the table of contents before a soft voice demanded her attention. She lowered the book and briefly examined the figure before her. Short, teal hair. Brown eyes. About the same height as herself. Polite. No reason, then, not to be polite herself, "Sure, I'm sorry. I'll get out of the way."
True to her word, she moved aside and was going to walk out of the row until she nearly tripped over a couple of books that had been left on the floor by other patrons. She couldn't help but give a huff and as she knelt down to grab the books. Sure, she should have been paying more attention, but no one should just leave books lying around on the floor! It was so... disrespectful. Well, if the other students weren't going to return them to be put back on the shelves, it was up to her to do it.

Harper nodded her thanks when the other girl yielded the space, and browsed the area for the book... which should have been there, between PS 3552.O873 and PS 4008.A327. Confusion brought a small scowl to her face, as she had checked the availability on one of the library computers before beginning her search. Not one to give up so easily, she began checking books to the left and right, one shelf above and below.
A sharp shuffling of feet nearby snapped her attention away. The other girl had tripped over some books piled carelessly in the aisle when she had moved to make room. (Hopefully not the girl's own pile, because... how clumsy is that?) Once it set in what was happening, Harper reached out to try and help -- more of a large twitch in that direction, really, since she was so late to realize. Luckily, it turned out to only be a small gravitational fumble and the dark haired student seemed to recover quickly.
"Whoa, are you okay?" Harper asked in a forced whisper, keeping her arm extended as a safety net in case there was another tumble in store.

Penelope barely realized that the other girl had moved to help her until a glance showed that her companion's arm hadn't lowered even though her faltering was past. A helpful gesture, and one that was appeciated even if it was unncessary. She relaxed, giving a slightly embarassed smile, "Yeah, I'm fine... I just didn't see these other two books here until it was too late. I guess someone was just too busy with final projects to put them back."
She stood up to her full height, carefully balancing the three books with the one she had just pulled from the shelf on top. The teenager paused and stared at her fellow student, not really sure how best to leave the scene and knowing some amount of courtesy hadn't been met. "Thanks for your help - I think I can walk these over to the desk without falling."

Harper nodded in a friendly manner and drew back her arm. "Good," she thought, "this girl's not a total klutz then." Finals took their toll on everything, even the library. Harper herself probably would have at least scooted over the small pile, too, while looking for her book. Ah, the book!
Standing to meet the dark haired girl before she could get away, Harper intercepted with a hand darting out to the book pile. It wasn't meant as a heavy touch, but one just meant as an unadulterated motion for attention. She valued being polite, though just as important was being direct.
"Just a moment! Could I have a look at these? I'm looking for one that should have been around here according to the call number, but I can't find it." There was still one more chance before she felt like she could respectfully drag a librarian into the mess.

The abrupt action caught Penelope offguard, but she turned to the teal-haired girl immediately. After all, she had tried to help when Penelope had nearly fallen and seemed polite overall. "Uh, sure, I wouldn't mind. I'm about to check out the book that's on top, but you're more than welcome to either of the others, if they're what you need."
She flipped the books so that their spines were visible to the other girl, remembering that she had said she was looking for a particular call number more than a title. "Just let me know which, if any, you need, and I'll go to the librarian with the rest."

"Thanks!" Harper said gratefully, though still keeping herself to the library whisper. The other girl could have just dumped them on her, so this was a surprisingly nice gesture. She ran her index finger over the now-exposed spines and their call numbers, from bottom to top, checking them against her mental note. "Don't you hate it when things aren't there when they should be like that? I checked before I started looking, so--" she cut herself short upon reaching the uppermost book. Unfortunately, it seems as though her book had already been claimed. At least she didn't need it for class, but it was aggravating to have been so close and so far. It's not like she was going to have a throw-down over a book. Harper sighed.
"Looks like we were on the same track today," she said, the annoyance dissolving away into a more good-natured acknowledgement of the other girl's victory. "Maybe you can let me know if it's any good?"

Idle conversation had never really been Penelope's strong suit, but the situation and comraderie was so friendly that she gave a small laugh and nodded her head as the other girl spoke. She did know what it was like for a book not to be in its proper place. The mood shifted, however, when she realized that SHE had been the one who moved the book this time, and not the one who had been denied the book!
Now Penelope felt torn. She needed this book in order to finish reading her novel, but she had really just picked it up on a whim. Her companion had been actively looking for this book, to the point that she knew the call number on sight. Clearly, her fellow student needed it more.
The teenager shifted the books so that one of her hands was free. She then pulled the book off the top of the pile and offered it towards her, "You can have it, if you need it? I just picked it up because it'd help me better understand a novel I'm reading. I can always get it later..."

Giving up the prize? Could it be assumed it's not for the other student's finals, either, then? Harper blinked, momentarily thrown by a proposition she hadn't expected, entertaining the idea of taking the dark haired girl up on the offer. However, in the end, with the other books still weighing down her arms, she couldn't in good conscious take someone else's only book. Even if that someone else was a total pushover and deserved it. On the outside, she only dropped a beat.
"No, no don't worry about it," she assured, "I've got these other two to read for now." To emphasize the point, Harper clasped them to her chest with a smile. "And it's just for fun, after all," she added mentally. Just because someone was looking down the supernatural aisle to supplement a novel didn't necessarily mean that they were all that into the supernatural. Harper's family had ground it into her that it was a frivolous hobby, and she felt guilty enough indulging it in private. "I'll just look for it again next semester."

"Next semester... but that's such a long time from now!" Despite the grace with which the teal-haired girl refused the book, Penelope still felt incredibly guilty for being the one to stand between her and the book she wanted. So, she decided to make one last effort.
She moved closer to her fellow student, offering the book again, "Please, I insist that you take it. I'm sure I can find something about the Winchester Mansion on Google or something - enough that I can keep reading my book, at any rate." Then, hoping to keep up the light mood, she added jokingly, "I mean, it's not like the book'll care who checks it out first, right?"
And then the lights went out.

Well, if she insisted, Harper was not going to be the one to disappoint. It would be next semester by the time the other girl got to read it, too, but there was no need to point that out. To go back and forth about this much more was going to get silly, and, if she allowed herself to admit it, she did really want that book. Something about the eccentric wife who built a house to keep ghosts confused and at bay was really fascinating; that one could open a door, expecting a room, and get a brick wall. It was logically illogical.
"Okay then, if it's not a bother. Thanks aga--" Harper was cut off this time by the shock of the library losing power, drenching them in a semidarkness broken up by the filtered afternoon sun. The book in the other student's hand, obvious a moment ago, was now lost in the haze of her eyes adjusting. "Oh no, really, a blackout?"

When the lights went out, Penelope stood perfectly still, not wanting to lose her footing and run into her companion. Blackouts were not terribly common, but they had been having some rough weather recently in Destiny City. Maybe one more hard wind had come along and blown the power cords down. Or maybe some riffraff from Hillworth or St. Magdalena had come and messed with the circuit breaker as a prank. Either way, she would have to deal with the effects and wait for the lights to come back on. "Aw man... what a pain!"
With a huff she lowered the arm that extended the book to the teal-haired girl close beside her. Then, a sound like thunder rumbled in the distance, and the teenager's eyes narrowed in confusion as she stared at the windows. She saw no clouds, no lightning zigzags, just sunlight peering dimly through the windows. Where had the sound come from then?
She listened again, just in case she had misheard, and she couldn't help but ask the person nearest her for outside confirmation, "Hey... did you hear that?"

The sound of thunder rolled through the library, causing Harper to pause. Sighing, she ran a hand through her hair in frustration.
"Yeah, it sounded like thunder, right?" Terrible weather sounded like it was looming on the front side of the building. Of course, weather was usually the cause of blackouts, but now everyone would be shoo'd out into the storm, and her without even a book to show for it. The sunlight still floating through the nearby window put on quite a mocking show. At least it meant the barn would be cool when she went to work, though. "C'mon, we may as well leave now."
Harper lead the way to the center aisle, albeit carefully in case there were any other stray books that hadn't been noticed. Her eyes had adjusted to the new darkness, yet there were still the darker shadows clinging to the shelves that could not be banished. Turning the corner, the center aisle was not much better, but it was at least large and free of stray books. Another clap of thunder, growling angrily. She peered ahead.
There were many natural phenomenons that Harper was willing to attribute to thunder without rainclouds. Maybe nature even invented heat-thunder, like it had heat-lightning. But what growled -- literally growled -- at the entrance to the building was not among any of that. It's appearance was only somewhat human, with its body made up of churning storm clouds, wings of impossibly falling rain, and claws that crackled with lighting. The only thing she could attribute it to was a true monster. She gasped as the realization hit her, which also awoke her other senses, and she quickly spun to hide behind the aisle.

Penelope nodded, following behind her fellow student even as she pointed out, "Yeah, that's what I thought, but it's sunny outside. If there's thunder, there should be storm clouds.... at least, I'm pretty sure there should be."
Her eyes adjusted even slower than her companion, and she nearly bumped into her when she stopped suddenly. Penelope moved to the side to take a look at what had caught the teal-haired girl's attention... and she froze too.
Her maroon eyes went from piece to piece, but even still she couldn't believe what she was seeing. A body of fierce, gray clouds. Rain drops that fell in a kind of syncronized way to form wings. Lightning claws. A literal living storm... and just as she was wrapping her head around the concept, those same claws blew the doors to the school away, allowing the creature to burst inside the school with another roar of thunder.
She dove under a nearby table for cover, but after she did so she realized that the other girl was not beside her but rather hiding in one of the aisles behind her. The black-haired teenager shifted slowly until she faced that area, half-calling, half-whispering towards the other girl who had been accompanying her and trying to clamp down on her panic. Calm. They just needed to stay calm. Develop a plan of action. "The hallways are probably going to be full of people... but maybe we can get out through a window? I don't want to be here when that... thing blows through."
