Khaldun had been particularly lethargic since Kaia had finally come home, even after she fell asleep with him for hours and they slept away the strain of an entire week's worth of drama. She had woken refreshed and ready to greet the world again and he.. hadn't. He was still a little slow, a little tired, a little worn around the edges even if he tried not to show it.

Oblivious to everything that had happened while she was gone and the little souvenir that Tanzanite had left behind, Kaia was beginning to worry that Khaldun was getting sick. Why, she couldn't guess (okay maybe she had a theory about germs and tramps) but she had been particularly attentive to him because of it and not just as a result of her sudden high from life. It wouldn't be the first time she tried to nurse him back to health from something she didn't entirely understand, she just wanted to stop whatever it was before it became a problem.

With no other options left to her, she finally settled on something she had to assume was a cure all in most situations - energy.

They both had limited teleports and, being that he was already tired, she wasn't going to make him waste one when they could walk just far enough to power up and find a civilian. She had him out of the apartment and down the sidewalk before he had a huge chance to protest, but for the time being she seemed just content enough to walk along at his side and stare up at the stars between the patches of light from the streetlamps overhead.

"We should start working on GUARD again, in a few days, after everything.. settles." It was business chatter, but she smiled as she dropped her bright eyes from the stars and looked up at his face instead. She'd been smiling a lot in the last day, maybe to make up for all the time she hadn't been able to. Even mundane things were hard for her to be glum about, not when she was still enchanted with life. "I still want to do that."

Nothing did seem to be wrong with him when she checked. There was no reason he should have been so weary for so long, when that seemed to be the only symptom. He just kept reassuring her he was fine, she worried too much, he just wanted to rest his eyes for a little while again. Eventually she had enough of that or something because soon she'd twisted his arm into showering, changing, and agreeing to go with her on an energy-gathering mission. It was the first Negaverse business they were going on together since things had gone crazy for both of them.

Everything did seem better when he was with Kaia now, though, even though he knew nothing in the world had changed except her relationship status. It felt different. Khaldun wasn't much for stargazing, or looking up and wondering what was out there. He figured he already knew: space was full of senshi. Mystery solved. She looked up, but he just kept sneaking glances at her. Kaia's was the only celestial body he wanted to look at.

"GUARD?" he asked, stifling a small yawn. It sounded vaguely familiar. Being sleepy didn't help him keep his thoughts organized. The way the last evening had gone pretty much dominated his thinking anyway, forcing everything else aside in the name of hormones. But god he was so tired. "What's that again?"

She glanced down at him just in time to catch one of his sidelong glances, but pretended not to notice despite the smile that spread across her face. She knew that the night before had sealed them in some kind of tangled fate together but it was still nice to see that he liked her, it was something he had hidden so well weeks prior. Now that they had both accepted it and tied themselves together, she could see the things more openly on his face, even when he was trying to be suave.

"Nega 911, Khal, except I gave it a better name remember?" she said finally, in a voice more patient than anyone else would have been with his forgetfulness. Rested, happy and generally just pleased with life, Kaia was back to her mostly-normal self. Except that now she was trying to figure out the dynamics of their relationship and keep him from sleeping himself into a coma at the same time.

She shifted closer to him as they walked on the sidewalk, then simply looped her arm in his. She splayed her fingers down the inside of his arm and across his wrist until she could lace her pale fingers with his, all the while keeping his arm tucked close to her. It was a simple gesture, but it was enough.

"We can probably power up behind that building," she brought up her free arm and pointed to a new, under construction building that looked like it would be a new set of apartments any day now. "They wouldn't have cameras or anything yet."

"Oh, right, that!" There was a longer pause. He didn't actually have much to do with planning it - the whole thing was Kaia's idea. He was just on board because they'd spent their first few full-time G.U.A.R.D. shifts watching TV instead of performing a lot of daring rescues because nobody called about any emergencies. And now, with the way things were, he could think of a few other things to do with that kind of alone time with Kaia. "I still don't remember what that stands for. General something something rescue... something else. Ah, damn. I'll get it next time."

He certainly didn't complain when she wanted to walk with him instead of next to him. He just smiled back at her. Hand in hand the two of them slipped behind the building, into a little alley which kept them out of sight. Hematite slowly let go of her fingers and stepped back so that they both had enough room to transform comfortably.

As he recited back his very-not-accurate attempt to remember what she had finally called their new, experimental Negaverse team she just narrowed her eyes on him a little and pursed her lips. It wasn't an angry expression, simply one that suggest he did that kind of thing a lot. It really was a good thing she was the brains behind their operation, otherwise they would be in trouble, clearly.

"Just call it GUARD, Khal." Her pursed lips finally curled at the corners and spread into a small smile, accompanied by a short laugh that was little more than a puff of air. Then she just looked away, ahead of them to the approaching alley behind the building, and shook her head a little at his predictability. At least he wasn't too tired to show his charm.

As they slipped into the darkness and she felt his hand draw back from hers, her free one dug into the pocket of her jeans and pulled out the henshin pen that was a must-have. A few words and a lot of flashiness later and she was Super Alkaid, complete with cape and floor length dreads tied up at the back of her heaad.

She turned her back on him then and looked down the alley behind them, surveying their hunting grounds while she waited for him to catch up. "I think we should head for the little park that way, there have been a lot of stupid teenagers partying there after dark. Graduation or something?" She shrugged and continued her idle watch, as if this were a normal behavior - and it was, for them.

"Alriiight, alright," he relented jokingly.

Khaldun leaned against the nearby wall while Alkaid went through her little senshi ordeal. Negaverse soldiers benefited from not having a fancy transformation. It hardly took a thought now, it was just some innate ability that was as natural to him as breathing. In just a moment he was General Hematite. However, the change in uniform from rank to rank took a little getting used to. He felt the weight of a whole lot of metal on his shoulders, arms, and legs. He hadn't actually materialized his weapon till now - it was a sword. A really ******** big sword. Not bad at all. Maybe all this general business wasn't going to be as hard as he thought - this sure as hell beat the shitty weapons he'd had for years before.

He glanced up at Alkaid and nodded. She was right, returning to their routine was a lot better. It felt just like old times again. "Sounds like a plan."

Alkaid had spent enough time with Hematite that she knew what his aura should have felt like. Even if the sudden c***k of armor behind her as he moved to examine his sword didn't give away that something was definitely different, the unexpected surge of his new found power did. That just didn't feel quite like Captain Hematite. It hit her like a shockwave as she stood at the mouth of the alley, searching for any threats in power nearby. There were no threats, just him.

She turned quickly on her heel to look at him, causing the long dreads to swing out and around her with the motion. Then she stopped and stared at him as if she didn't quite believe what she was seeing. Sure, she had felt the difference, but looking at him just reaffirmed that there was definitely a new development he hadn't shared with her yet. The fact that he seemed to have completely forgotten that she didn't know blew her mind.

She walked back towards him slowly, taking careful steps that made almost silent clinks against the pavement with her heels, trying not to draw his attention away from his sword just yet. She kept walking until she was standing directly in front of him, dwarfed both by his height and now the sword he boasted as well. It was certainly an improvement from that boomerang.

"So, General, was this supposed to be a surprise?" Her brows rose with her question but her face remained unmoved for the most part. She wasn't mad at him for it, just annoyed that she had spent so long trying to discern the cause of his sudden lack of energy. Maybe he had just been enjoying the attention, but he should have known, she shouldn't have been fretting so much.

Hematite looked up form his new weapon to see his partner was bearing down on him. It was pretty clear that he hadn't spent that much time celebrating his promotion or even thinking about it by the way he seemed confused rather than smug about being addressed as a general.

"Oh! Oh, this?" Some of his fingers were tapping nervously against the sword handle. Alkaid's expression was unreadable. "Uhh."

What was he supposed to say, that it was a pity promotion? That Tanzanite was giving him an advance on his rank because she didn't think there was any other way to save him from his own bad decisions? It was humiliating enough when it happened. Tanzanite at least had done it on good faith, sort of, but back then Hematite had nothing left and nobody to explain himself to. He just imagined he'd find a way to prove himself and give Tanzanite a retroactive reason for humoring him with this last chance, and everything else would be forgotten. He hadn't expected Kaia to come back, and to come back for him. He'd gotten lost in memories of the night before and pushed aside the more stressful responsibilities of a new rank.

He didn't meet her gaze. Instead he was trying very hard to look down the alley where she'd been scoping things out first. Her expectant stare was already burning into him. "I was going to tell you..."

"Oh this?" She quoted back at him, almost as if she couldn't quite believe that he'd forget something so important. She brought one hand up and traced her finger over the flat edge of the sword, following the pattern of the curling metal, just to emphasize that she had never seen it before. She stayed like that as he shifted and looked away, investigating the new weapon while he tried to find some good excuse.

In the end, he didn't have one, and though many people might have gotten angrier over the admission she simply just sighed and shook her head at him. There was no reason to be mad at him for simply being himself. Not to mention she'd done a good job of distracting him.

"I'm sure you were." She dropped her hand and looked up at him. She could have been angry, but she wasn't, she was just not surprised for the most part. In the end, he was just Khal's nature and if she got upset over every little thing he did then she wouldn't be here with him now. She just reached up with one gloved hand and gently touched his face, so that he would look back at her instead of avoiding her in favor of some imaginary object down the alley.

"I'm relieved, because now I know what the problem is." Her hand slipped away from his face and she managed a small smile to show him that she wasn't about to pack her bags and leave again over something so small. "If I had known this earlier I could have helped you hours ago. You just need energy."

She took a few steps back from him, that same confident smile in place, and stopped at the mouth to the alley. "You ready? We should go before you wear out completely."

He could hear it in her voice. She didn't believe it. How could she, even he wouldn't have believed himself. He wasn't sure what the other undertone was. Disappointment, or anger. Something that told him he'd gone and ******** things up in record time. It was her touch that brought him back but only to worry more about the judgment she was passing on him.

"Just a starseed." It was no big deal, he tried to insinuate. He felt her fingers pull away from his face, followed them back to her with his eyes and tried at first to look as nonchalant as he could. But her small smile was making him feel guilty. He'd disappointed her, insulted her. She'd been the one who had helped him along this whole time, the only reason he was alive and whole and able to be promoted at all. Of course she deserved to know before now. If only he hadn't put it out of his thoughts, if only he had thought of a better explanation when she asked, if only a million different things it was too late to do now, except one. Just as she was getting ready to get to work, his nerve finally broke.

"Tanzanite came, after you left." It was like forcing the last bit of toothpaste out of the tube. Rational explanations from him weren't just rare because he didn't want to give them, he also had a terrible time figuring out how to even explain himself to others without feeling like he just sounded stupid. Just because he finally had Kaia didn't mean he got to keep her without some kind of a challenge. Maybe her frustration with him would just keep building up and then she'd leave him and he didn't even want to imagine going through that ordeal again. This was a blow to his pride but not to his foundation. "That's when it happened. I wasn't trying to hide it from you, I just didn't think I'd have the chance to tell you myself after what happened."

That small smile on her face faltered when she realized that just telling him everything was okay wasn't going to fix whatever doubt he'd gotten out of her implications.

It hurt a little, if she wanted to be completely honest with herself. It felt like he doubted her, or didn't trust her when she said she was going to stay. Not that she could have blamed him entirely for that since she'd stretched her promise so thin that anything else would have broken it. She thought coming back would fix things, but there was that hesitance, that paranoia that she could feel from him in waves. Every ounce of empathy he lacked, she had, more than she would have liked. She was hyper aware of the issue at hand in a way she didn't want to be.

She crossed the space back towards him and stopped again, directly in front of him, forcing her eyes up to stare into his. There was a mixture of a frown and sympathy on her face, as if she didn't know what to do to make this okay again. Unlike him, she didn't doubt she could fix it, but she also didn't know what it was going to take to heal the tiny rift her temporary abandonment had caused.

"Will you stop?" Her arms fidgeted at her sides for a moment, curling and uncurling from fists. "I don't know why Tanzanite came to you after that, or what her reasons were for this, but don't makes excuses for it. I was honestly just.. surprised."

How did she show him he wasn't some fleeting moment in her life? He seemed to need that proof.

Her eyes swept around the abandoned construction site for a moment, looking for any signs of other people and feeling for any signs of other powered auras. There was nothing there though, just the two of them. She glanced back up at him and reached for the belts crossing over his chest, finding a suitable grip in them. She pulled down on them and pushed herself up onto her toes so she could level her eyes on his, though she was mindful of the sword that was pinned between them. Finally, she leaned in to brush her lips across his gently, a chaste kiss.

It had worked the first time. If nothing else maybe it would just short circuit his brain and restart his emotions.

She drew back a breath away from his face and narrowed her bright eyes a little on his dark ones. "You don't have to second guess me. I really, honestly, am only concerned about you right now."

To say he had abandonment issues was a massive understatement. Even he would never know just how bad they were, that it was for that exact reason he'd fallen under Alkaid's care months ago. Only Aree Cadence knew the lengths he'd been willing to go to just to escape his psychosis, and she was as good as dead herself. As much as he liked to feign independence, he was always desperately in need of support and comfort and all the other basic needs that even two levels of corruption couldn't purge out of him. It was Kaia, now, who he couldn't live without, because she was all those things to him. They spent more time together than with anyone else, for months. His appreciation for her came in the form of almost religious devotion, and an obligation to put her happiness ahead of his any time she asked, long before he realized he was becoming infatuated with her as well.

That infatuation and obsession grew like an ivy inside him till it threatened to suffocate what little common sense he had just to reach what it wanted. After all, only when he had Kaia to himself could he really be there for her like she had been for him, only then could he prove he was capable of doing something, anything, worth a fraction of her generosity. He was at war with himself for weeks, fighting down envy and jealousy and loneliness like he'd never suffered before, and he had it all mostly under control until the first moment he thought he'd lost her. When she left she had taken everything from him. He could never give her another reason to walk away, or he was sure it would kill him.

When she grabbed the belts across his chest and dragged him down to her height, he wasn't really sure what to expect. More frustration? His authority as a Negaverse soldier vanished in her presence, and that was his fault and not hers. All he had was his own awkward idea of how to handle things. Before he could even open his mouth to respond, she had silenced him with a kiss.

He couldn't argue with her method of persuasion, though. Everything he was thinking of saying at the sight of Kaia's discomfort was interrupted, forgotten. Her words and her confidence in them pushed aside his fears for a minute, just long enough for her to convince him that maybe the worst really was over. It would be enough tonight.

"I won't let it happen again," he joked halfheartedly. "I guess I'm ready now."

Out of everything in Alkaid's backwards world, everything that she called hers in some respect, the only thing that really belonged to her was the tall, dark teenager standing in front of her. She had been with him almost every day since the night Tanzanite had nearly killed him at his own request and the few that they had been apart had either been the worst days she'd ever experienced, or so uneventful that she couldn't even remember.

In the short life she'd lived, through the spotty two years she had been awakened and corrupted, as she was drug through every hell she could imagine, he had been there for more of it than any other person in her life could claim. Did it matter to her that once he had been nothing to her, that he might have never even given her a second thought before this? No. They had a bond that went deeper than explaining. They were bound together by invisible strings, as surely as anything ever was.

They had built something between them and even if she had to use every technique she was slowly learning to overwrite his natural reaction, she wasn't going to let him destroy it with his self doubt.

"Good," she smiled up at his half-hearted joke, but finally let go of the straps across his chest so that he could stand up to his full height once again. Her heels hit the ground instead of standing on tip toe, and she carefully turned to put her back to him and face the direction of their hunt. Her hands were poised and at the ready, waiting to whisper the words on her lips and draw in a victim to feed his need for energy.

"This shouldn't take that long." Then she was walking the length of the alley and looking for the first civilian in sight. There were no second thoughts about who it was or what they meant to anyone. No seconds thoughts about anything.

Hematite needed this more than they did.
