I dont know about you guys but I really enjoy the overtures to musicals. My favorites are Phantom of the Opera, Sweeny Todd, Les Miserables, Spamalot, and Nightmare before christmas.

I have to agree with you on Les Mis, but I also like Wicked...or rather, I don't like the overture per se but the effect it has. When I saw it I nearly jumped out of my seat at the first notes. sweatdrop

The Phantom item 666 When i heard Phantom's for the first time it was just like a frieght train hit me. It was great. I agree. Now, every time the auctioneer says "... a little illumination," I brace myself. It's so powerful! The overture I hate the most would be South Pacific. It felt like I was sitting there for 10 minutes before the show finally got underway.

I really like the overtures for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Jekyll and Hyde. They tell you almost exactly what kind of music and what type of show you're about to see/hear.

One of my favorite overtures is the one from Once Upon a Mattress (the original version, not the revival) ^_^

I find a strange plesure in the overture from Mamma Mia. It gets my blood pumping evertime I listen to it. I also LOVE the overture of Dance of the Vampires. That's my guilty pleasure show...

Now, every time the auctioneer says "... a little illumination," I brace myself. It's so powerful! . Yes! I saw it back in August and the auctioneer had such presence that I forgot the chandelier popped on! I'll admit it. I squeeled. And then when the tubas just punch you in the stomach....ooh! It was magical. Like I was THERE. I like The Music Man's overture, too. Just because of Rock Island.

It's not a musical but my favorite overture is from a rock album. (It was kinda one that should have been made into a musical... the format was like it anyways) It's "Overture 1928" from Dream Theater's album "Scenes from a Memory." It's seriously awesome!

Phantom of the Opera and Wicked are probably my favorite, they got that quality rush right at the first notes.
I've decided I really like the one on the Mary Poppins movie too.
