It was a frequent sight, of the yellow and black reaper arguing with his familiar. Actually, it was a rare sight if you saw them not arguing. The reaper's face was irate, vexed as usual.

"Oh, just shut up. It's not like you need a tux. Besides, I dont think the maul sells doll clothes for you anyways." Vaith flicked the dragon sharply on it's head, hands stuffing into pockets in a gesture of defensiveness. He thought about what a prom consisted of-- Girls in dresses. Boys in tuxes. First thing that came to mind. But what if guys didn't wear a tux? He wore a tux on the ship event but was that appropriate?

It sure had given him a nice sharp look. But was prom supposed to be sharp? If it was, what store had decent prices? Vaith was a reaper. He wasn't a rich demon (it'd be nice if he was) so his budget was a little low. Yet, he didn't think his definition of low prices matched with low prices for a store in the maul.

Boils had it hard.

Speaking of rich demons...

Okay, well, Xiu was a demon, but she wasn't a rich one. In fact, the only reason she had come out to the maul today was to scope out a nice, reasonably-priced dress for the upcoming prom. It was unlikely that she would be making any actual purchases today though--that could wait until she was with the other ghouls on their planned dress-hunting trip.

As she headed in the direction of the formal wear store, her attention was suddenly drawn towards the sounds of arguing. She turned to look at the culprits, determining that--since the boil seemed to be her age, if not a little older--he should have known better than to argue in the middle of the maul. They were in public, after all! Best not to get involved. Shaking her head disapprovingly, Xiu began to leave when she suddenly caught a small snippet of the boil's irritated words. Tux?

"Are you an Amityville student as well?" she blurted out, immediately turning around to face the pair again. So much for keeping quiet. After a second of hesitation, she added meekly, "S-sorry, I just happened to overhear you talking. You're...looking for a tux?" Considering his age, his (apparent) desire to buy some formal wear, and the fact that Amityville--the main school in this area--was holding a prom soon, Xiu had quickly come to the conclusion that this boil was a schoolmate. She had never seen him around though (granted that, as a new student, this was really no surprise).

Their arguing had attracted a few stares, including the ghoul in front of him .. But that did little to deter their bickering. But their bickering had lowered to a friendly squabble at this point, when the ghoul turned around to face him. Vaith had almost stepped past her, registering the population around him, including the ghoul, as little more than air until the air spoke to him. Well, not really air -- In this case, it was a stunning ghoul. Stunning if you considered what one's definition of beauty was in the world of Halloween, if you preferred them to look a little more alive .. or not so alive, really.

He was getting off topic, as usual. Someone had asked a question and it was his turn to answer.

Freezing in his steps, he stopped to narrow his red eyes her way. "As well?" He glanced at her frame quickly, with an affirmative nod. Fellow student? Must have been, if she was asking. "Yeah, I am. Don't apologize-- We were arguing loud enough for the academy to hear us. In fact, I should probably be apologizing for letting you hear that embarrassing argument." Vaith scratched the back of his head with a slightly sheepish frown.

"Sorry about that."

Xiu was quick to shake her head, holding her hands up, palms out. "Oh, don't apologize! I mean..." Trailing off slowly, her lips twitched into a small, sheepish grin, "W-well, the maul really isn't a great place for an argument. I can see it was clearly nothing serious though." Now that she looked at them more closely, it just seemed like casual bickering between two friends. Or uh, a boil and his dragon.

"You mentioned a tux, though? Are you looking to buy one?" That seemed like the main motive for Amityville students who came to the maul lately. She peered up at the boil thoughtfully when a sudden idea popped into her head. "Actually, I'm here to look at dresses myself. There are a couple of stores that sell formal wear here, but there's one in particular that I was heading towards." The store in question wasn't very big, and it was cooped up in one of the lonely corners of the maul, but there was one specific reason that Xiu preferred that one over the others.

"It has a decent variety and, most importantly," she put up her index finger to emphasis her next point, "It won't bleed you dry of your pumpkin seeds." Xiu wouldn't call herself cheap, but she didn't want to spend all her savings on a dress that she would only wear once or twice.

Smiling up at him, she gestured in the general direction of the store. "Since I'm going that way, I could bring you there if you're interested, uh..." There was an awkward pause, and then she rubbed the back of her head, looking a little flustered, "I'm Xiu-Ying, but just Xiu is fine. And you two are...?"

Vaith thought, the girl talked a lot! Which was good, making up for his lack of conversation .. and his lack of knowledge. It was cute, the way she gestured while she spoke. Vaith was content to let her fill in the silence for the time being, one leg shifting it's weight to the other.

So her name was Xiu-Ying? Sounded like somebody sneezed. But that wasn't polite-- Vaith corrected himself mentally, his frown deepening as he tried to concentrate on .. Well, concentrating. He was trying to concentrate on his efforts to concentrate. Ouch, what a headache.

"I'm Vaith. This here is .. Well, he's my familiar. Thank goodness we found someone who's more adept at this kind of stuff-- I'd probably have gone and spend all of my seeds in the first store I went to and go broke. I'm not a very .. enthusiastic or skillful at this shopping business. Thanks .. Xiu." He tested the name on his lips, having little experience to dealing with the other residents of Halloween town. He looked at her attire, eyes surveying up and down. "Your dress looks good on you-- Why would you need to buy another dress for prom?" He questioned.. Of course, he could see how his own was inappropriate .. but she was wearing a dress!

Weren't girls supposed to wear dresses at prom? If a ghoul already had one, why did she need another?

"No problem, Vaith!" She chirped in return, grasping the sides of her skirt to perform a mock-curtsy. Xiu liked to help out whenever she could, and not only was she helping out a fellow student by referring him to the small formal wear shop, but she was giving the little old witch who ran the shop some business as well. It didn't seem like many Halloween Town residents were aware that the store existed in the first place. That's no surprise though, she sighed, It's in such a dark corner and this place is huge.

She was caught off-guard by the boil's words, and a tinge of pink rose to her cheeks at the sudden compliment. "I, uh...thank you?" However, what surprised her the most was the question that followed and, after a few seconds of blank staring, the Baku had to look down at herself to confirm what she was wearing. Yup, her usual, everyday attire. Glancing back up at the boil, she stared at him for a moment before emitting a small laugh.

"This isn't really what you're supposed to wear to a prom," She explained, looking a bit amused, "Since prom is usually formal, this is a bit...inappropriate. Besides, this is way too short." She flipped up her skirt to prove her point, giving very little thought to modesty. Of course, it wasn't as if she wasn't wearing anything underneath--she always had on a pair of safety shorts, just in case. Xiu would have been much more careful had she not been wearing them.

Lowering her skirt, she smoothed it out quickly before offering Vaith another smile. "Let's head to the shop then, okay? I'm sure you have other things to do."

Vaith had nearly been about to jump in self defense when Xiu flipped up her skirt-- only to reveal shorts. Okay, while that was mildly disappointing to see, it was a greater relief to see that he wasn't going to be hit for being in the wrong place and time. "You know .. Even with shorts, I'm not sure you want to flash your skirt like that. It's not good for us boils." Vaith rubbed the back of his head, averting his view from her hands smoothing her skirt down, even if it was simply shorts underneath.

Vaith wasn't sure how to deal with Xiu-- it wasn't that she was innocent. (But she was!) At least, with the ghouls who were more .. seductive than most, Vaith knew how to handle them with flirtatious ease. But with Xiu, he had no other course than a sheepish boil. What was a guy supposed to do when a girl flipped her skirt? Usually, it was a COME GET ME SIGN, but obviously with Xiu, it wasn't. Considering how it wasn't, Vaith just considered that his well-intentioned advice sounded just a little .. inappropriate. Leaving himself in an awkward position.

Not too awkward. But Vaith was exhausted thinking about it.

"I dont really have anything to do." He said, his tone schooled into a nonchalant one, unable to admit he knew few others to pass the time with.

"Why's that?" She blinked, looking genuinely puzzled by Vaith's words, "I mean, I can understand if you were just wearing um, underwear beneath the skirt, or even nothing, but--..." Xiu trailed off as she realized how awkward of a topic she had steered their conversation into. And with a boil she had only met, no less! Looking a little flustered now, she grinned and emitted a nervous laugh.

"W-well, um, no. N-nevermind." A part of her was still curious why it was so improper even with shorts on, but she didn't want to delve into this conversation right now (and again, most certainly not with a boil). Clearing her throat, she raised a hand to sweep in the general direction of the formal-wear store. "A-ANYWAYS, to the shop we go! If you don't have anything else to do, you can take your time with finding a tux." Shopping in a rush was never much fun anyways.

She moved around Vaith and reached upwards to take him by the shoulders, gently pushing him along and leading him towards their destination. After a bit of walking, Xiu dropped her hands and beamed in excitement, skipping up to a store front and beckoning the reaper over. "This is the place!"

There were definitely a lot less people milling about here, and the store was pretty small, but there also appeared to be a vast variety of dresses and tuxes crammed on the racks. They would probably have to do a bit of digging, but with luck, they would find something that suited them.

]Vaith did not want to try the tuxes on, as disappointing as it was to the current employee. Why did he want to try a skull-designed tux on? Or a pin-striped one?

Tuxes were confusing as-is. But the boil was a pushover and allowed himself to try on two styles he sort of liked before deciding that he didn't really care for "variety."

Perhaps, the ghoul would have been a little surprised to see Vaith's amazing ability to change in and out of an outfit faster than his ability to walk from one end of the maul to the other. That was a pretty short walk. With a suspicious trace of .. was it, nervousness .. or simply, impatience, that led Vaith's unnatural show of speed towards the cashier with a tux in hand. Considering how lazy the boil was .. And he had to turn around to buy a dress shirt for the inner wear of the tux as well.

His frown had reached depths never seen before.

"..."

Xiu had absolutely no words as she watched the reaper jump in and out of outfits within...well, it felt like seconds, really. Xiu herself hadn't moved from her original place--when she walked into the store, she had noticed a particularly nice-looking dress, and had reached out to grasp it and pull it out to give it a look over.

That dress had never left the rack, and Xiu's arm was still outstretched to take it. Slowly, she lowered hand, stepping up beside the reaper as he went to the cashier. She was a little shocked, to be honest, but the frown on his face elicited a giggle that had to be suppressed. "That was fast."

Well, she couldn't say that she disapproved of his choice. It was a simply tux, but there was nothing wrong with simplicity, was there? It looked like that was done and done and...as for her own dress? Perhaps it would be best to wait until she came with the ghoul friends and asked for opinions. As nice as Vaith was, judging by just how fast he had found something to purchase, he didn't seem like the shopping-buddy type. Well, whatever the case, she was glad to have been of help.
