She stared at the cell phone for a long time before calling, it was the ageless story of boy meets girl, broken hearts only made things harder when she felt that warm and niggling urge to make sure he was alright.
She was so sure it was one sided, how could he enjoy someone who had such dark and morbid tastes after all, but she wasn't really into the 'goth' mentality that she had encountered before, no dark suicidal poetry...just a fascination for what was left behind when all was said and done. The fact that she had memories of an alien world had done little to help on that front either.
She pressed the speed dial for him... a deep breath as she heard the phone ringing on the other end, she closed her eyes and waited.

Ring... Ring... Ring... Ring...
There was some grumbling from the bed, one hand reaching for the desk where his cellphone was resting. He'd been sleeping more than he should have, lately. He felt... odd. Maybe he was falling ill ?
His hand finally caught his phone, and he took the call without looking, expecting it to be his mother - who else could it be ?
"Hallo ?" Thankfully, that was rather easy to parse an english equivalent for.

"HI!...er...Hello! It's um... It's Ume, is this Daniel?" She said hesitantly into the phone. The voice sounded right but she had no idea if she might have reached a family member of friend... or, god forbid, a boyfriend.
"I um... I heard you were under the weather, so I thought I'd call and see if you wanted company!" She continued cheerfully as though she were sure it was him. After all she was reasonably sure... she twisted the phone cord around one finger as she eyed the boots she had set out in case he wanted company. Black and charcoal with insets of black lace, all buttons, none of the zippers that were at once more convenient but less traditional.

This definitively wasn't his mother.
The teen all but bolted sitting at this realization. "Ume ! H-Hi !" Smooth. Very smooth right here. "i've been... Yeah, I think I came down with something, not too sure what but..." Ramble, ramble ramble. "Ah, sure ! You... need the address, right ?"
Oh, if only he knew not only that Ume knew exactly where he lived, and that she had pondered the idea of him having a boyfriend...

"Ah!" She said fumbling for a split second. "Yes! I have your number but..." She stopped herself before she accidentally said something she wished she had not.
She took down his address and promised to be there 'soon'. It was practice alone that let her button the boots so quickly she thought, but perhaps there was more than a little excitement involved as she tucked some of her favorite books into a shoulder bag and tapped her way down the stairs.
She brought with her some of what her mother called 'tea cup Miso', effectively powdered miso soup, dried and crumbly but not the worst she had ever had, and besides the seaweed was good for people who were sick, surely it couldn't hurt someone who'd been drained like he had.
She sang quietly to herself the whole way there.

Thankfully, there was enough time for Daniel to get into a somewhat presentable state before Ume could arrive - he glanced at his closet and fingered through it, wondering what she might find more interesting, what might make her notice him, what might...
No, no, no. It was useless. He wasn't... even remotely interesting to someone like her, what chance did he have ? He should just... enjoy what he had while it lasted.
Right ?
He had gotten dressed, and was midway into doing his braid in when there came a knock on the door, so he gave up on that and went to the door. "Hey ! J-Just don't mind things okay ?"
It honestly wasn't as bad as he made it sound like - there was a bit of clutter, papers and books everywhere mostly, as well as his laptop hooked up on the table right there to see, but other than that, his apartment was in a pretty respectable condition, if not on the tiny side.

She gave a small laugh at his flustering and brushed fingers on his arm. "Really...don't worry! My Room looks -far- worse when I have a sewing project! Mother says it looks like a fabric store threw up..." She blushed thinking of the last time she had gotten frustrated with a design. Lace had ended up in the strangest places... including her celling fan.
"How are you feeling?" She said turning earnestly to gaze up at him with wide and worried eyes. "I...I brought things to make soup, and I brought you some books!" The rose crept into her cheeks as she spoke.

He watched her step inside, and tried to make the feeling of his stomach tying into knots go away. It didn't work, through, and he shook his head.
Stop it...
"I was working on a world yesterday... Almost fell asleep on my computer so I didn't pick up." He said, sheepish. "Im feeling... better, mostly." Still a little odd, but... how could he begin to explain it ?
"Y-You did ? Really ?" His cheeks colored slightly. "That's so nice of you... I can just move these ?" He was already picking up the papers before he had even stopped speaking, making neat organized piles to gain a bit of space.

"They keep saying there is a sort of sleeping sickness going around." She shook her head like she wanted to say more but didn't dare. "They can't find a cause but they find people asleep like they were exhausted, perhaps that's what happened?" She blinked up at him trying for innocent suggestion and feeling for sure she had failed.
She fumbled then to retrieve the books. "Medical Mysteries" and "Lie after Lie", the second was a true crime account she found fascinating. "Here!" She said flushing. "I...I mean I hope you like them, The Medical Mysteries is pretty tame, m...mostly everyone lives. The other is a true crime!"

"Really ?" He looked surprised - he hadn't heard anything about that but... he'd stopped really watching tv a few months ago. It all got a little too depressing, really. "I hope this won't end up like last year again..." He would like not to spend another summer in a coma, really. It would be very much appreciated. "You stay careful, okay ? I-I wouldn't like you to catch it..."
Oh, if only he knew...
"Oh !" He accepted the books with the uttermost care - they might as well have been precious gems by the way he handled them. "Oh ! They look so interesting ! Thank you !"

"You think so?" She said earnestly. "Your not... you don't think their..." She stopped herself and then just smiled....wide open and honest delight to see him treat them so carefully."If you don't like them, I don't mind..." She added flushing slightly.
She glanced away quickly tying to hid behind a curtain of her hair and then stopped... blinking at another book she saw, the cover was a soft grey dust jacket...almost blue but not quite, and on it, white letters in an older gothic script.
"Michael Ende - Die unendlich Gelchichte"
"Oh!..." She said softly "I german!!" She said delighted and then put a hand over her mouth. "I mean...I didn't mean to pry."

"How can one say they don't like a book before they read it ?" Honestly, Daniel looked rather puzzled. And had mostly missed the point.
Oh, well.
He followed her gaze and just smiled - and waited silently for her to say something before speaking. Did she know what that book was ? After setting her own on the table carefully, she went to take this one from the shelf.
"Oh, that's what everyone thinks !" He said, wondering if she would pick it up, if she would realize what this book was. "But kind people find out that they are cruel. Brave men discover that they are really cowards ! Confronted by their true selves, most men run away screaming !"

She paused... a smile spreading over her face again as she heard him say the words. She fumbled for a moment before carefully pulling it free and cradling it in both hands. "He has suffered with you. He went through everything you went through; and now, he has come here with you. He is very close... listening to every word, we say."
She blushed. "Though I love the painted desert... they never put that in the movies though." She said and ran a finger over the dust jacket, gazing down at the illustration, a twining serpent, red unicorns and a white tower.
"When you're feeling better... would you..." She started and stopped before continuing. "would you read it to me, in german I mean."

He just grinned when she figured it out. Aha ! Of course he had expected her to - she seemed rather well-read indeed.
Through when she mentioned reading it... in german... He looked like a der in the headlights. "Ahhh... Really ? I-I could. Through im curious about your soup..." He said, sheepishly.
Well, he hadn't eaten yet today... Had just woken up, really.

"You don't have to at all!" She said almost stammering "I just...OH! yes! Of course!" She said shifting to the soup almost gratefully and fished in her bag before pulling it out. "I...I do hope you're ok with Miso...it's supposed to be at least relatively healthy for you. Seaweed and miso and such..." she said holding it out so that he might see.
