Tisiphone padded silently through the forest, alert, acutely aware that her painted band was dangerously close to a pack’s border. Soon they would reach it, and then they would have to decide whether or not to risk entering potentially hostile lands. Tis was anything but a coward, and she would never give up on her band, but she was getting tired. It was not the type of weariness that a good nap could cure. It was the kind that went soul-deep. They had been wandering for so long, searching for either lands to call their own, or a pack that would take them in, but so far, luck had not been on their side.
They might be relentless and fierce, in their own way, but there were only four of them and as such, they were not really strong enough to defend a territory of their own. Intimidating war-paint and determination would only scare off so many wolves, especially if any intruders happened to outnumber them. On the other hand, most established packs had taken one look at her band’s ferocious body-paint and immediately done their best to get rid of them. A few packs had considered taking in one or another of her wolves, but Tis did not trust them and would not separate her band, anyway. Her little band of painted wolves. Her piecemeal family.
Tis glanced around, making sure her wolves were still nearby and safe.
First, there was Captain, the yellow-painted brown and black male. He had an odd manner about him and was finicky about the strangest things (really? bathing in privacy?), but he was always reliable and was considerably less aggravating than her other two charges. Next, she caught sight of Heyoka, her reckless foundling, whom she thought of as something between an annoying little sister and a worry-inducing daughter. Her green-spattered-grey coat stood out starkly against the much deeper hues of the forest. Tisiphone’s emerald eyes softened for the barest of moments. She would do everything in her power to keep her wolves safe. Despite themselves, if necessary. Even flirtatious Zanza’jin, the final member of her band, who persisted in pestering Tis despite her best efforts to put him off.
A flutter of momentary panic went through her when she couldn’t see him, but then she rounded a thick-trunked tree and spotted him, his orange-painted gold and brown coat shining brilliantly, even in the shadows. She huffed out an annoyed breath and focused again on her surroundings.
Though the area was interspersed with meadows and forest, both, they were actually at a rather high altitude – higher than they had been in quite a while, in fact. Still, the area seemed to have rich hunting and a plentiful water supply, as evidenced by the various tributaries to the large river nearby and the fact that they had taken down a nice, plump deer yesterday.
Although she knew better than to get her hopes up, Tisiphone could not help but think that it would be nice if her band could stay here, if the unknown pack ahead would welcome them into these truly beautiful lands. She shook out her thick, black ruff and picked up her pace. There was only one way to find out.

Tisiphone was, in Heyoka's estimation, nothing more than a worry-wort.
Also, her obsession with finding a pack was just short of ridiculous. Who needed a pack? They already were a pack -- a pack of four, and that was all a wolf really needed. Just enough to bring down big prey, enough for someone to stand guard, enough to fight just about anybody who messed with them. Honestly. It was all pretty silly.
Still, silliness had never been something Heyoka shied away from. In her own way she embraced it. The absurd was often very close to the dangerous, and Heyoka liked dangerous things. She liked them a lot.
Grinning her usual lopsided, slightly manic grin, she darted ahead, moving swiftly on her paws. She was younger than the others and it showed, both in her slim figure and her youthful, reckless air -- although she would probably never grow out of it, no matter what her companions wished.
"Other wolves," she nearly crooned, and let out an odd sort of tension-filled giggle. Was she off her rocker? Well, maybe. Or maybe it was just an act she kept up to throw the others off the scent of that deep-seated melancholy, the apathetic emptiness in her heart. "A whole pack of 'em. Oh man, I hope they want a fight." She circled back, coming up even with the others, and threw herself at Captain, nipping his ear playfully. "How 'bout it old man? You ready for a fight?"

They were rather blatantly trespassing on a large pack's turf, and not for the first time, Zanza'jin wondered at the thoughts flitting through his leader's head. Ever since he had met the pretty femme, they had been wandering. Always wandering, searching for a home to call their own. More than once, they had found a place worthy enough of that name, but Tisiphone never seemed quite happy enough with it. It was almost as if something else called to her, leading her to that final, true place to call home.
He snorted at Heyoka's antics, ears twitching. That femme was something else. Beautiful, but off her rocker entirely. He'd do more than flirt with her . . . but he didn't want to get thoroughly involved with that kind of crazy. Zanza'jin may have been a playboy, but he wasn't stupid.
"Heyoka, ya be wantin' a fight only cuz ya be bored all dey time. Go fight a bear, dat'll occupy ya fo' awhile. Leave da rest o' us in peace," he said with a yawn, stretching as he went to catch up with Tisiphone.
"We be walkin' a thin line, Tisi. Dat border is heavily patrolled. Can smell dem even from here," Zanza murmured, not afraid, per se, but worried. He was entirely too laid back to truly be afraid or angry, but worry, worry was something he could definitely feel.
"But I admire ya fearlessness, Tisi. Tis' pretty sexy," he added, wiggling his brows and leaning in to n** lightly at her cheek. He knew his advances angered her more then anything else, but it was an entertainment he'd never give up.

Tis snarled and snapped at Zanza’jin, though her fangs only closed on air. He might be infuriating beyond reason, but she did not actually want to hurt him…yet. “Zanza,” she growled, “quit calling me that, and don’t give Heyoka any more ideas. You know she’d actually do it, if she could find a bear.”
Her ears swiveled forward as she re-gained her focus, doing her best to ignore the antics of her band. The scent of the native pack was much stronger, now, and she was able to differentiate between the individual wolves. There were a lot of them, a fact that should worry her, but somehow did not. One particular scent stood out above all the others, stronger, fresher, and quite distracting. It was rich and heady and purely male.
Tisiphone snorted and shook herself out again. Distractions were not what she needed. She needed a clear head. Still, her decision was made.
“We will try these lands,” she announced. There would be no skirting the boundaries here. They would meet this pack and make their intent known, if she judged them worthy. And something told her that they would be. That pull that she felt, the edginess that had kept her from settling anywhere else was singing to her, now, making her feel almost as giddy as Heyoka, though the reservations in her mind kept her from showing it.

For Captain's part, he was good about being quiet. Certainly there was already enough noise generated between Heyoka and Zanza'jin, which in turn made Tisiphone snap. He was passive in these instances, though it was clear he disapproved of most, if not all, of the crazy ideas generated between the gamma pair of their little group.
"I would rather avoid a bear myself," he muttered, just loud enough for them to hear. The creatures were not good game for any wolf as far as he was concerned.
Poor Captain, the only sensible one was the dominant, dark female who would not see his sense. Why not this pack, or this one? They seem nice enough. We've been walking for a while, Tisiphone, let's have a little rest . . .
But he far preferred supporting Tisiphone than encouraging either Zanza or Heyoka's thrill-seeking ideas. Even now, Captain tossed a wary gaze over his shoulder at them. No matter what he lectured upon, it never seemed to stick.
He sighed quietly. "Trying it is," he said after Tisiphone's declaration, shaking himself a little to dislodge any unwanted dirt from his fur. "Please, Heyoka, Zanza'jin, let's look reasonable for the border patrol. I don't want us being chased off simply because of a bad first impression."

Zanza sniffed, licking his paw and swiping it over his face. He always looked presentable! He was a grade A stud after all, and he frowned whenever he was lumped in with Heyoka. He wasn't a nut job; he simply liked to have a good time, which usually involved him flirting with a girl, not jumping off some cliff into a pack of coyotes. (epic foreshadowing)
"Dey could be comin' at any time, Captain. Why get all huffy 'bout it now? I'm sure we be smellin' em' before dey pounce on us. Da two big'uns be pretty easy to track," Zanza said, wrinkling his nose. He'd seen the paw prints back at the border. His own foot had drowned in them, and it made him wonder what kind of beasts lived in these heights.
His nose was the best of the bunch, and for the moment, nothing came to his sensitive nostrils, so he stayed relaxed, turning back to bump into Captain, pushing Heyoka aside so he could walk side by side with the brown and black male.
"We be good fo' now. Dun worry, brudda. Zanza will let ya know when trouble be comin'!"

A bear? Hm. That was a possibility. Heyoka had never fought a bear, come to think of it, and she grinned a broad, toothy grin. She shivered a little with a snicker and nearly danced on her paws as she circled back around the other, finding her boundless energy difficult to contain. "I'd take a bear, if there was one," she said, calmly enough -- resolutely, even. Because it was the truth.
We'll try this one, Tisiphone said. How often had she said that one now? Did anybody ever really believe that now? They were going to be hapless wanderers forever, chasing after perfection, and truth be told Heyoka was a-ok with that.
She huffed at Captain. "I'm plenty presentable," she said, with a pout. "Besides, what's the point in lying to them? If we hang around they'll see sooner or later what we're like. Better to be up-front than lie, I say."
She still half-hoped that whoever they ran into that they'd be game for a fight.

Captain gave Zanza a long-suffering look as he came up beside him. "By the time you tell us, we'll probably already be in trouble," he replied, "good nose or not, Mister Zanza'jin." Who knew how many of them there were? And those large pawprints from before . . . He couldn't help but shudder a little. "But . . . the thought is appreciated. If there are any females who come greet us, I'm sure your charms would appease them easily."
It was very, very hard to say that. And almost harder to imagine.
But regardless of whether he agreed with his companions, Captain was ever courteous.
The beta's ears tilted towards Heyoka almost incredulously. "You should do no such thing, madam!" Captain reprimanded her with alarm. "A bear is far too dangerous for any wolf to take on. You lack of concern is beginning to frighten me, young lady."
Y'know, since maybe day one.
"And looking representable is not lying," he added with a frown. "It merely offers others the full capacity of one's beauty or handsomeness. Your decision for . . . green, is not the most flattering." Really that was beating a dead horse since they had been painted for quite some time now, but he couldn't help but bring it up again.

Without any warning, Tisiphone stopped dead in her tracks. A sound, or perhaps the lack of a sound, had caught her attention. The heavy weight of unseen eyes watching her settled between her shoulder blades. Her hackles stood on end. Something was not right.
They were not alone.
“Quiet,” she ordered, a hint of growl leaking into her voice. The dense foliage prevented her from seeing who or what was there. The wind was wrong for her to catch its scent. Was it a wolf or something else? Tense and ready for an attack, she bore her fangs in the direction of the unknown entity. An enemy? A native? Tisiphone would take no chances. If it was another wolf, she could apologize later.
A flash of fur in a myriad of bold tones was her only warning before a great, hulking beast crashed through the underbrush, headed straight for them.
Though it was hardly the time for such thoughts, Tis could not help but see the irony in the situation. Speak of the devil and it shall appear. It looked like Zanza and Heyoka would get their bear, after all.

The bear roared as it charged them, pupils red-rimmed in her rage. She was hungry, injured, and mourning, three perfect catalysts for her current near-berserker rage. The wolves had gotten too close, their smell enough to trigger her simmering anger. Why couldn't she just lick her wounds in peace? Mourn her cubs without anymore interruption?! "You have poor timing this day, canines. My rage need be quenched, and your blood shall be what I drink," she snarled, slamming her front paws into the ground, sending dirt clods flying. Zanza'jin's ears flattened to his skull and he took a few steps back, looking side-long at Captain. "I was jus' kiddin', mon! I swear! Ya see? Dis be what happens when ya mess wit da voodoo. Ya don' mess wit da voodoo!" He shook his head and jumped in front of Heyoka, knowing how eager she would be now that his challenge to her could truly be carried out.
"You! Don' ya be tinkin' 'bout harassin' dat bear. She'd gulp ya down fasta den a bird wit a worm."

Lack of concern. That made her giggle.
"Green?" Heyoka said, her voice somewhere between hysterical and injured. "The green makes me unpresentable? Damn Captain, I thought you were talking about how I was rude, crude, loud, obnoxious and totally reckless. If the green is the only problem..."
She trailed off, pausing at Tisiphone's warning. Heyoka was reckless, not stupid. If you were going to throw yourself headlong into danger, it was only fun if you knew you were doing it on purpose.
The bear burst through the brush and her eyes widened up with the expression of one who just came out to discover their first gifts laid out on Christmas day.
Zanza'jin succeeded in blocking her, but she jumped up and down as though springs had replaced her legs and she grinned a big idiotic grin. "Less talk, more action!" She called, eyes flashing.
Was she taunting a pissed-off she-bear?
Oh yeah. She totally was.

Facing down an enraged she-bear was nowhere on Tis’s list of expectations for the day. All she had been worried about was the local pack, but then, she doubted that it was on anyone’s list. Except for her foundling’s, perhaps.
“Heyoka,” Tisiphone growled in warning. It would not do to instigate the bear until she knew just what they were going to do about her.
The she-bear was heavily injured and, despite her rage, did not look like she was in any state to be fighting. They could probably outrun her easily enough, but the midnight-black female had never been one to back down from a fight. Her instincts told her to attack. Besides, if they could deal with a threat right outside the locals’ territory, they might be more inclined to accept her little band into their fold. What better way to prove their worth than to kill a bear?
Tis battled with her own desires and thought rationally about their safety. Protecting her wolves came first. Anything else was just a bonus.
Thanks to the already poor state of the bear, taking her down without committing suicide should be possible, as long as Heyoka could refrain from doing anything too rash. Although the emotion would lend extra strength, an enraged creature did not think clearly. It made stupid decisions and was easy to exploit. Outmaneuvering the bear would be a simple matter for a group of hunters that had been working together for as long hers has; however, it was still a risk. A bear was still a bear, and it could always get lucky. Despite the fact that her own fury was rapidly surfacing at the threat to her wolves, neither did she want to set them against the threat only to get them maimed that way. That left one option: negotiation. Assuming that the bear could manage to see through her rage well enough to think relatively straight. But if that beast made one wrong move, Tisiphone would strike, no hesitation.
All of these thoughts had flickered through her mind and been categorized almost before the last of the growl left her throat.
“Ursine,” she returned, “we are no easy prey. You might get lucky and take one of us down, but I guarantee you would not survive the encounter. I suggest you take your bloodlust elsewhere.”
There. Would it not be even more impressive if they could talk a bear down? Anyone can kill something, but how many wolves could say that they had managed such a feat as that? Certainly, Captain would appreciate her efforts. Zanza’jin might, too.
Tis’s ear twitched.
Who was she kidding? It would be much more satisfying to kill the bear, but she had made her decision. Depending on that of the bear, she might get her chance anyway. Then wouldn’t Heyoka be pleased.

"No no no, more talking, more talking!" he lectured at the bouncing Heyoka, planting a paw before her as if that alone would stop her from racing forward. "We do not simply rush into a situation without assessing it first." He was the wolf who bothered to give someone like her things like this, even when he was sure it would never stick. Perseverance!
Not to mention if Tisiphone was addressing the bear, he had to address the varied reactions of their "pack". It was a yin-yang thing he liked to perpetuate, being the betas.
"So much for your nose, Mister Zanza'jin," Captain muttered, though his ears tilted back confusedly at the mention of voodoo. Did he jinx them? Or did they jinx them? Or was it all bad timing?
He went with bad timing. Better not to believe that there were worse forces at work in the world.
For now, he'd let Tisiphone do the talking since she already engaged it, though the beta male kept a close on both companions and the bear.

Zanza's ears flattened to his skull and he looked chagrined. "Can't win 'em all, brudda. I blame Heyoka fo' distractin' meh, so direct ya anger at her. I be innocent."
The bear's eyes narrowed as she stomped her paws into the ground again. Blood dripped freely from her wounds, soaking into the thirsty soil. For all her injury, she did not limp, nor did she hold herself as if she were in pain. The she-bear had truly fallen into a berserker state, her pain over-taken by rage and forgotten.
"Who says I wish to survive, wolf?" With that, she charged, a thunderous roar falling from her wide-spread maw. The huge fangs glistened and she angled for Heyoka first, moving faster than her injuries should have let her.

Although she did keep a peripheral eye on them, Tis mostly ignored her band’s antics, letting Captain mind them as she focused on their potential enemy. The bear was clearly not of sound mind and she would watch every move it made. In fact, as soon as the bear spoke, Tis knew that she was going to get to give in to her more violent instincts: destroy the threat. When Tisiphone saw that the bear was headed toward Heyoka, however, her rage became something all-consuming. Nothing attacked her wolves. Ever. Especially not her youngest. Heyoka endangered herself enough without anyone else adding to the risk.
The bear was going down.
With a fierce, snarling growl, Tisiphone lunged for the bear’s throat, throwing her whole body behind her attack.
"Then die!" she roared.
